1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: He, whose beloved was unrivaled, enjoyed with her, his dear wife, the Apsaras of the earth, experiencing the genuine essence of love (preman).
उद्यानवनगुल्मेषु तमालगहनेषु च ।
पुष्पमण्डपरम्येषु लतावलयसद्मसु ॥ २ ॥

2. He dallied in the thickets of pleasure gardens and in groves dense with tamāla trees, in lovely flower pavilions, and in bowers made of intertwining creepers.
पुष्पान्तःपुरशय्यासु पुष्पसंभारवीथिषु ।
वसन्तोद्यानदोलासु क्रीडापुष्करिणीषु च ॥ ३ ॥
puṣpāntaḥpuraśayyāsu puṣpasaṃbhāravīthiṣu ,
vasantodyānadolāsu krīḍāpuṣkariṇīṣu ca 3

3. He dallied on flower beds in inner chambers, in pathways laden with abundant flowers, on swings in spring gardens, and in pleasure ponds.
चन्दनद्रुमशैलेषु संतानकतलेषु च ।
कदम्बनीपगेहेषु पारिभद्रोदरेषु च ॥ ४ ॥
candanadrumaśaileṣu saṃtānakataleṣu ca ,
kadambanīpageheṣu pāribhadrodareṣu ca 4
4. candanadrumaśaileṣu santānakataleṣu ca

4. In hills adorned with sandalwood trees, and beneath "santānaka" trees, and in groves of "kadamba" and "nīpa" trees, and within the hollows of "pāribhadra" trees.
विकसत्कुन्दमन्दारमकरन्दसुगन्धिषु ।
वसन्तवनजालेषु कूजत्कोकिलपक्षिषु ॥ ५ ॥

5. In places fragrant with the nectar of blooming jasmine ("kunda") and "mandāra" flowers, in the vast expanses of spring forests, where cuckoo birds chirp.
नानारण्यतृणानां च स्थलेषु मृदुदीप्तिषु ।
निर्झरेषु तरत्तारसीकरासारवर्षिषु ॥ ६ ॥
nānāraṇyatṛṇānāṃ ca sthaleṣu mṛdudīptiṣu ,
nirjhareṣu tarattārasīkarāsāravarṣiṣu 6
6. nānāraṇyatṛṇānām ca sthaleṣu mṛdudīptiṣu
nirjhareṣu tarattārasīkarāsāravarsṣiṣu

6. And in places with a gentle glow amidst various kinds of forest grasses, in waterfalls showering torrents of abundant, flowing spray.
शैलानां मणिमाणिक्यशिलानां फलकेषु च ।
देवर्षिमुनिगेहेषु दूरपुण्याश्रमेषु च ॥ ७ ॥
śailānāṃ maṇimāṇikyaśilānāṃ phalakeṣu ca ,
devarṣimunigeheṣu dūrapuṇyāśrameṣu ca 7
7. śailānām maṇimāṇikyaśilānām phalakeṣu ca
devarṣimunigeheṣu dūrapuṇyāśrameṣu ca
7. śailānām maṇimāṇikyaśilānām ca phalakeṣu
ca devarṣimunigeheṣu ca dūrapuṇyāśrameṣu
7. And on the platforms of mountains, which consist of jewel and ruby slabs, and in the dwellings of divine sages and ascetics, and in distant, sacred hermitages (āśramas).
कुमुद्वतीषु फुल्लासु स्मेरासु नलिनीषु च ।
वनस्थलीषु कृष्णासु फुल्लासु फलिनीषु च ॥ ८ ॥
kumudvatīṣu phullāsu smerāsu nalinīṣu ca ,
vanasthalīṣu kṛṣṇāsu phullāsu phalinīṣu ca 8

8. Amidst blooming night-lotus ponds, and radiant day-lotus ponds; and in dark, flourishing forest groves, and among blooming fruit-bearing trees.
सुरतैः सुरतारुण्यैः सुन्दरः सुन्दरेहितैः ।
ईहितैः पेशलान्योन्यघनप्रेमरसाधिकैः ॥ ९ ॥
surataiḥ suratāruṇyaiḥ sundaraḥ sundarehitaiḥ ,
īhitaiḥ peśalānyonyaghanapremarasādhikaiḥ 9
9. surataiḥ suratāruṇyaiḥ sundaraḥ sundarehitaiḥ
īhitaiḥ peśala-anyonyaghana-premarasa-adhikaiḥ

9. He is charming by means of amorous sports, by the freshness of youthful love, and by delightful actions; by endeavors that are graceful, deeply imbued with intense mutual love and sentiment, and truly exceptional.
प्रहेलिकाभिराख्यानैस्तथा चाक्षरमुष्टिभिः ।
अष्टापदैर्बहुद्यूतैस्तथा गूढचतुर्थकैः ॥ १० ॥
prahelikābhirākhyānaistathā cākṣaramuṣṭibhiḥ ,
aṣṭāpadairbahudyūtaistathā gūḍhacaturthakaiḥ 10
10. prahelikābhiḥ ākhyānaiḥ tathā ca akṣaramuṣṭibhiḥ
aṣṭāpadaiḥ bahudyūtaiḥ tathā gūḍhacaturthakaiḥ

10. By means of riddles, narratives, and letter-sign games; by board games like chess, by many gambling games, and by cryptic quatrains.
नाटिकाख्यायिकाभिश्च श्लोकैर्विन्दुमतिक्रमैः ।
देशकालविभागैश्च नगरग्रामचेष्टितैः ॥ ११ ॥
nāṭikākhyāyikābhiśca ślokairvindumatikramaiḥ ,
deśakālavibhāgaiśca nagaragrāmaceṣṭitaiḥ 11
11. nāṭikā-ākhyāyikābhiḥ ca ślokaiḥ vindu-atikramaiḥ
deśakālavibhāgaiḥ ca nagaragrāmaceṣṭitaiḥ
11. nāṭikākhyāyikābhiḥ ca ślokaiḥ vindumatikramaiḥ

11. And through short plays and narratives; through verses, and by overcoming challenges related to specific points or patterns; and through the classifications of regions and eras, as well as through the customs and activities of cities and villages.
स्रग्दाममालावलितैर्नानाभरणयोजनैः ।
लीलाविलोलचलनैर्विचित्ररसभोजनैः ॥ १२ ॥
sragdāmamālāvalitairnānābharaṇayojanaiḥ ,
līlāvilolacalanairvicitrarasabhojanaiḥ 12
12. sragdāmamālāvalitaiḥ nānābharaṇayojanaiḥ
līlāvilolacalanaiḥ vicitrarasabhojanaiḥ

12. Adorned with garlands and chains of flowers, with various ornaments applied, with playfully swaying movements, and partaking in diverse, delicious foods.
आर्द्रकुङ्कुमकर्पूरताम्बूलीदलचर्वणैः ।
फुल्लपुष्पलतागुञ्जादेहगोपनखव्रणैः ॥ १३ ॥
ārdrakuṅkumakarpūratāmbūlīdalacarvaṇaiḥ ,
phullapuṣpalatāguñjādehagopanakhavraṇaiḥ 13
13. ārdrakumkumakarpūratāmbūlīdalacarvaṇaiḥ

13. (They indulged) in chewing betel leaves with moist saffron and camphor, and in concealing nail marks on their bodies with blooming flowers, vines, and "guñjā" berries.
समालम्भनलीलाभिर्मालाप्रहरणक्रमैः ।
गृहे कुसुमदोलाभिरन्योन्यं दोलनक्रमैः ॥ १४ ॥
samālambhanalīlābhirmālāpraharaṇakramaiḥ ,
gṛhe kusumadolābhiranyonyaṃ dolanakramaiḥ 14
14. samālambhanalīlābhiḥ mālāpraharaṇakramaiḥ
gṛhe kusumadolābhiḥ anyonyam dolanakramaiḥ
14. samālambhanalīlābhiḥ mālāpraharaṇakramaiḥ

14. (They delighted) in playful embraces, in successively striking each other with garlands, in house-swings adorned with flowers, and in mutual swinging movements.
नौयानयुग्महस्त्यश्वदान्तोष्ट्रादिगमागमैः ।
जलकेलिविलासेन परस्परसमुक्षणैः ॥ १५ ॥
nauyānayugmahastyaśvadāntoṣṭrādigamāgamaiḥ ,
jalakelivilāsena parasparasamukṣaṇaiḥ 15
15. nauyānayugmahastyāśvadāntoṣṭrādigamāgamaiḥ
jalakelivilāsena parasparam samukṣaṇaiḥ
15. nauyānayugmahastyāśvadāntoṣṭrādigamāgamaiḥ

15. (They also enjoyed) coming and going by boats, pairs of elephants and horses, tamed camels, and other such (means of transport), by the sport of water-play, and by mutual sprinkling.
नृत्यगीतकलालास्यतालताण्डवमण्डनैः ।
संगीतकैः संकथनैर्वीणामुरजवादनैः ॥ १६ ॥
nṛtyagītakalālāsyatālatāṇḍavamaṇḍanaiḥ ,
saṃgītakaiḥ saṃkathanairvīṇāmurajavādanaiḥ 16
16. nṛtyagītakalālāsya-tālatāṇḍavamaṇḍanaiḥ
saṅgītakaiḥ saṅkathanaiḥ vīṇāmurajavādanaiḥ
16. nṛtyagītakalālāsya-tālatāṇḍavamaṇḍanaiḥ

16. By means of embellishments such as dance, song, arts, the graceful lāsya (dance), rhythmic tāla (beat), and the vigorous tāṇḍava (dance); through musical performances, engaging conversations, and the playing of the vīṇā (lute) and muraja (drum).
उद्यानेषु सरित्तीरवृक्षेषु वरवीथिषु ।
अन्तःपुरेषु हर्म्येषु फुल्लदोलावदोलनैः ॥ १७ ॥
udyāneṣu sarittīravṛkṣeṣu varavīthiṣu ,
antaḥpureṣu harmyeṣu phulladolāvadolanaiḥ 17
17. udyāneṣu sarittīravṛkṣeṣu varavīthiṣu
antaḥpureṣu harmyeṣu phulladolāvadolanaiḥ
17. udyāneṣu sarittīravṛkṣeṣu varavīthiṣu

17. In gardens, among the trees on riverbanks, along beautiful avenues; within inner palaces and mansions, through the delightful swaying on flower-laden swings.
सा तथा सुखसंवृद्धा तस्य प्रणयिनी प्रिया ।
एकदा चिन्तयामास सुभ्रूः संकल्पशालिनी ॥ १८ ॥
sā tathā sukhasaṃvṛddhā tasya praṇayinī priyā ,
ekadā cintayāmāsa subhrūḥ saṃkalpaśālinī 18
18. sā tathā sukhasaṃvṛddhā tasya praṇayinī priyā
ekadā cintayāmāsa subhrūḥ saṅkalpaśālinī
18. sā tathā sukhasaṃvṛddhā tasya praṇayinī priyā
subhrūḥ saṅkalpaśālinī ekadā cintayāmāsa
18. She, his beloved and affectionate wife, who had grown up in such comfort, and who possessed beautiful eyebrows and a strong resolve (saṅkalpa), one day began to ponder.
प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियो भर्ता ममैष जगतीपतिः ।
यौवनोल्लासवान्श्रीमान्कथं स्यादजरामरः ॥ १९ ॥
prāṇebhyo'pi priyo bhartā mamaiṣa jagatīpatiḥ ,
yauvanollāsavānśrīmānkathaṃ syādajarāmaraḥ 19
19. prāṇebhyaḥ api priyaḥ bhartā mama eṣaḥ jagatīpatiḥ
yauvanollāsavān śrīmān katham syāt ajarāmaraḥ
19. eṣaḥ mama bhartā jagatīpatiḥ yauvanollāsavān śrīmān
prāṇebhyaḥ api priyaḥ katham ajarāmaraḥ syāt?
19. This husband of mine, the lord of the earth, is dearer than even my very life (prāṇa). He is filled with the exuberance of youth and is glorious; how can he remain ageless and immortal?
भर्त्रानेन सहोत्तुङ्गस्तनी कुसुमसद्मसु ।
कथं स्वैरं चिरं कान्ता रमे युगशतान्यहम् ॥ २० ॥
bhartrānena sahottuṅgastanī kusumasadmasu ,
kathaṃ svairaṃ ciraṃ kāntā rame yugaśatānyaham 20
20. bhartrā anena saha uttuṅgastanī kusumasadmasu
kathaṃ svairaṃ ciraṃ kāntā rame yugaśatāni aham
20. aham kāntā uttuṅgastanī anena bhartrā saha
kusumasadmasu svairaṃ ciraṃ yugaśatāni kathaṃ rame
20. How can I, a beloved woman with prominent breasts, enjoy freely and for hundreds of ages, with this husband, in flower-houses?
तथा यते यत्नमतस्तपोजपयमेहितैः ।
रजनीशमुखो राजा यथा स्यादजरामरः ॥ २१ ॥
tathā yate yatnamatastapojapayamehitaiḥ ,
rajanīśamukho rājā yathā syādajarāmaraḥ 21
21. tathā yate yatnam ataḥ tapojapayamaihitaiah
rajanīśamukhaḥ rājā yathā syāt ajarāmaraḥ
21. aham tathā yatnam ataḥ tapojapayamaihitaiah
yate yathā rajanīśamukhaḥ rājā ajarāmaraḥ syāt
21. Thus, I strive with great effort, by means of ascetic practices (tapas), chanting (japa), and self-restraints (yama) that I undertake, so that the moon-faced king may become ageless and immortal.
ज्ञानवृद्धांस्तपोवृद्धान्विद्यावृद्धानहं द्विजान् ।
पृच्छामि तावन्मरणं कथं न स्यान्नृणामिति ॥ २२ ॥
jñānavṛddhāṃstapovṛddhānvidyāvṛddhānahaṃ dvijān ,
pṛcchāmi tāvanmaraṇaṃ kathaṃ na syānnṛṇāmiti 22
22. jñānavṛddhān tapovṛddhān vidyāvṛddhān aham dvijān
pṛcchāmi tāvat maraṇam katham na syāt nṛṇām iti
22. aham tāvat jñānavṛddhān tapovṛddhān vidyāvṛddhān
dvijān pṛcchāmi nṛṇām maraṇam katham na syāt iti
22. Therefore, I will first ask the Brahmins (dvija) - who are mature in knowledge, in ascetic practices (tapas), and in learning - how death may not occur for human beings.
इत्यानीयाथ संपूज्य द्विजान्पप्रच्छ सा नता ।
अमरत्वं कथं विप्रा भवेदिति पुनःपुनः ॥ २३ ॥
ityānīyātha saṃpūjya dvijānpapraccha sā natā ,
amaratvaṃ kathaṃ viprā bhavediti punaḥpunaḥ 23
23. iti ānīya atha saṃpūjya dvijān papraccha sā natā
amaratvam katham viprā bhavet iti punaḥ punaḥ
23. sā natā iti dvijān ānīya atha saṃpūjya he viprāḥ
amaratvam katham bhavet iti punaḥ punaḥ papraccha
23. Having thus brought and then honored the Brahmins (dvija), she, bowing humbly, repeatedly asked them, 'O learned ones (vipra), how can immortality be attained?'
विप्रा ऊचुः ।
तपोजपयमैर्देवि समस्ताः सिद्धसिद्धयः ।
संप्राप्यन्तेऽमरत्वं तु न कदाचन लभ्यते ॥ २४ ॥
viprā ūcuḥ ,
tapojapayamairdevi samastāḥ siddhasiddhayaḥ ,
saṃprāpyante'maratvaṃ tu na kadācana labhyate 24
24. viprāḥ ūcuḥ | tapaḥ japa yamaiḥ devi samastāḥ siddha
siddhayaḥ | samprāpyante amaratvaṃ tu na kadācana labhyate ||
24. devi tapaḥ japa yamaiḥ samastāḥ siddha siddhayaḥ
samprāpyante tu amaratvaṃ kadācana na labhyate
24. The brahmins said: "O Goddess, all perfections (siddhi) and accomplishments are attained through ascetic practices (tapas), chanting (japa), and self-restraint (yama). However, immortality is never achieved."
इत्याकर्ण्य द्विजमुखाच्चिन्तयामास सा पुनः ।
इदं स्वप्रज्ञयैवाशु भीता प्रियवियोगतः ॥ २५ ॥
ityākarṇya dvijamukhāccintayāmāsa sā punaḥ ,
idaṃ svaprajñayaivāśu bhītā priyaviyogataḥ 25
25. iti ākarṇya dvija-mukhāt cintayām āsa sā punaḥ |
idaṃ sva-prajñayā eva āśu bhītā priya-viyoga-taḥ ||
25. sā dvija-mukhāt iti ākarṇya priya-viyoga-taḥ
bhītā āśu sva-prajñayā eva punaḥ idaṃ cintayām āsa
25. Hearing this from the brahmin's mouth, she, fearful of separation from her beloved, quickly pondered this again with her own understanding.
मरणं भर्तुरग्रे मे यदि दैवाद्भविष्यति ।
तत्सर्वदुःखनिर्मुक्ता संस्थास्ये सुखमात्मनि ॥ २६ ॥
maraṇaṃ bharturagre me yadi daivādbhaviṣyati ,
tatsarvaduḥkhanirmuktā saṃsthāsye sukhamātmani 26
26. maraṇaṃ bhartuḥ agre me yadi daivāt bhaviṣyati | tat
sarva-duḥkha-nirmuktā saṃsthāsye sukhaṃ ātmani ||
26. yadi me maraṇaṃ daivāt bhartuḥ agre bhaviṣyati
tat sarva-duḥkha-nirmuktā ātmani sukhaṃ saṃsthāsye
26. If, by fate, my death occurs before my husband, then, freed from all sorrow, I will abide happily within my true self (ātman).
अथ वर्षसहस्रेण भर्तादौ चेन्मरिष्यति ।
तत्करिष्ये तथा येन जीवो गेहान्न यास्यति ॥ २७ ॥
atha varṣasahasreṇa bhartādau cenmariṣyati ,
tatkariṣye tathā yena jīvo gehānna yāsyati 27
27. atha varṣa-sahasreṇa bhartā ādau cet mariṣyati |
tat kariṣye tathā yena jīvaḥ gehāt na yāsyati ||
27. atha cet bhartā ādau varṣa-sahasreṇa mariṣyati
tat ahaṃ tathā kariṣye yena jīvaḥ gehāt na yāsyati
27. Now, if my husband dies first within a thousand years, then I will act in such a way that my vital breath (jīva) will not depart from this body.
तद्भ्रमद्भर्तृजीवेऽस्मिन्निजे शुद्धान्तमण्डपे ।
भर्त्रा विलोकिता नित्यं निवत्स्यामि यथासुखम् ॥ २८ ॥
tadbhramadbhartṛjīve'sminnije śuddhāntamaṇḍape ,
bhartrā vilokitā nityaṃ nivatsyāmi yathāsukham 28
28. tadbramadbhartṛjīve asmin nije śuddhāntamaṇḍape
bhartrā vilokitā nityam nivatsyāmi yathāsukham
28. aham asmin nije śuddhāntamaṇḍape tadbramadbhartṛjīve
bhartrā vilokitā nityam yathāsukham nivatsyāmi
28. In this very inner apartment (śuddhānta-maṇḍapa) of mine, where my husband's life (jīva) is ever-present and active, I shall always reside comfortably, being observed by him.
अद्यैवारभ्यैतदर्थ देवीं ज्ञप्तिं सरस्वतीम् ।
जपोपवासनियमैरातोषं पूजयाम्यहम् ॥ २९ ॥
adyaivārabhyaitadartha devīṃ jñaptiṃ sarasvatīm ,
japopavāsaniyamairātoṣaṃ pūjayāmyaham 29
29. adya eva ārabhya etadartham devīm jñaptim sarasvatīm
japa-upavāsa-niyamaiḥ ātoṣam pūjayāmi aham
29. aham adya eva etadartham ārabhya devīm jñaptim
sarasvatīm japa-upavāsa-niyamaiḥ ātoṣam pūjayāmi
29. Beginning from today, for this purpose, I shall worship the goddess of knowledge, Sarasvatī, with vows of chanting (japa) and fasting (upavāsa) until she is completely satisfied.
इति निश्चित्य सा नाथमनुक्त्वैव वराङ्गना ।
यथाशास्त्रं चचारोग्रं तथा नियममास्थिता ॥ ३० ॥
iti niścitya sā nāthamanuktvaiva varāṅganā ,
yathāśāstraṃ cacārograṃ tathā niyamamāsthitā 30
30. iti niścitya sā nātham anuktvā eva vara-aṅganā
yathāśāstram cacāra ugram tathā niyamam āsthitā
30. sā vara-aṅganā iti niścitya nātham anuktvā eva
ugram niyamam āsthitā tathā yathāśāstram cacāra
30. Having thus resolved, that noble lady, without even informing her husband, undertook a severe vow (niyama) and performed it exactly according to scriptural injunctions.
त्रिरात्रस्य त्रिरात्रस्य पर्यन्ते कृतपारणा ।
देवद्विजगुरुप्राज्ञविद्वत्पूजापरायणा ॥ ३१ ॥

31. At the end of every three nights, she would break her fast, being solely devoted to the worship of gods, members of the twice-born (dvija) classes, spiritual teachers (guru), wise persons, and scholars.
स्नानदानतपोध्याननित्योद्युक्तशरीरिका ।
सर्वास्तिक्यसदाचारकारिणी क्लेशहारिणी ॥ ३२ ॥

32. Her body was constantly engaged in ritual bathing, giving (dāna), austerities (tapas), and meditation (dhyāna); she practiced complete faith and good conduct, and removed distress.
यथाकालं यथोद्योगं यथाशास्त्रं यथाक्रमम् ।
तोषयामास भर्तारमपरिज्ञातसंस्थितिः ॥ ३३ ॥
yathākālaṃ yathodyogaṃ yathāśāstraṃ yathākramam ,
toṣayāmāsa bhartāramaparijñātasaṃsthitiḥ 33

33. She, whose true state remained unknown, pleased her husband at the proper time, with due diligence, according to the scriptures, and in the correct order.
त्रिरात्रशतमेवं सा बाला नियमशालिनी ।
अनारतं तपोनिष्ठामतिष्ठत्कष्टचेष्टया ॥ ३४ ॥

anārataṃ taponiṣṭhāmatiṣṭhatkaṣṭaceṣṭayā 34

34. In this manner, for a hundred periods of three nights (300 nights), that young girl (Balā), endowed with vows (niyama), continuously performed her devotion to austerity (tapas) with arduous effort.
त्रिरात्राणां शते चाथ पूजिता प्रतिमानिता ।
तुष्टा भगवती गौरी वागीशा समुवाच ताम् ॥ ३५ ॥
trirātrāṇāṃ śate cātha pūjitā pratimānitā ,
tuṣṭā bhagavatī gaurī vāgīśā samuvāca tām 35

35. And then, after a hundred periods of three nights (300 nights), the worshipped, highly esteemed, pleased divine Goddess Gaurī-Vāgīśā spoke to her.
श्रीसरस्वत्युवाच ।
निरन्तरेण तपसा भर्तृभक्त्यतिशालिना ।
परितुष्टास्मि ते वत्से गृहाण वरमीप्सितम् ॥ ३६ ॥
śrīsarasvatyuvāca ,
nirantareṇa tapasā bhartṛbhaktyatiśālinā ,
parituṣṭāsmi te vatse gṛhāṇa varamīpsitam 36
36. śrīsarasvatī uvāca nirantareṇa tapasā bhartṛbhaktyatiśālinā
parituṣṭā asmi te vatse gṛhāṇa varam īpsitam

36. Śrī Sarasvatī said: "O daughter, I am greatly pleased with you for your continuous austerity (tapas) and your supreme devotion (bhakti) to your husband. Accept the boon you desire."
श्रीराज्ञ्युवाच ।
जय जन्मजराज्वालादाहदोषशशिप्रभे ।
जय हार्दान्धकारौघनिवारणरविप्रभे ॥ ३७ ॥
śrīrājñyuvāca ,
jaya janmajarājvālādāhadoṣaśaśiprabhe ,
jaya hārdāndhakāraughanivāraṇaraviprabhe 37

37. Śrī Rājñī said: "Hail! O You whose moon-like radiance consumes the scorching fault of the flames of birth and old age! Hail! O You whose sun-like radiance dispels the dense darkness of the heart!"
अम्ब मातर्जगन्मातस्त्रायस्व कृपणामिमाम् ।
इदं वरद्वयं देहि यदहं प्रार्थये शुभे ॥ ३८ ॥
amba mātarjaganmātastrāyasva kṛpaṇāmimām ,
idaṃ varadvayaṃ dehi yadahaṃ prārthaye śubhe 38
38. amba mātar jagatmātar trāyasva kṛpaṇām imām
idam varadvayam dehi yat aham prārthaye śubhe
38. amba mātar jagatmātar kṛpaṇām imām trāyasva
śubhe aham yat prārthaye idam varadvayam dehi
38. "O Mother, O Mother, O Mother of the universe, protect this pitiable one! O Auspicious One, grant these two boons that I request."
एकं तावद्विदेहस्य भर्तुर्जीवो ममाम्बिके ।
अस्मादेव हि मा यासीन्निजान्तःपुरमण्डपात् ॥ ३९ ॥
ekaṃ tāvadvidehasya bharturjīvo mamāmbike ,
asmādeva hi mā yāsīnnijāntaḥpuramaṇḍapāt 39
39. ekam tāvat videhasya bhartuḥ jīvaḥ mama ambike
asmāt eva hi mā yāsīt nija antaḥpuramaṇḍapāt
39. ambike tāvat ekam mama bhartuḥ videhasya jīvaḥ
asmāt eva hi mā yāsīt nija antaḥpuramaṇḍapāt
39. "O Mother, first, let my husband Videha's life return. May he indeed not depart from this very inner palace hall of his."
द्वितीयं त्वां महादेवि प्रार्थयेऽहं यदा यदा ।
दर्शनाय वरार्थाय तदा मे देहि दर्शनम् ॥ ४० ॥
dvitīyaṃ tvāṃ mahādevi prārthaye'haṃ yadā yadā ,
darśanāya varārthāya tadā me dehi darśanam 40
40. dvitīyam tvām mahādevi prārthaye aham yadā yadā
darśanāya varārthāya tadā me dehi darśanam
40. mahādevi yadā yadā aham tvām dvitīyam darśanāya
varārthāya prārthaye tadā me darśanam dehi
40. O Great Goddess, whenever I pray to you a second time for your vision and for a boon, then please grant me your vision.
इत्याकर्ण्य जगन्माता तवास्त्वेवमिति स्वयम् ।
उक्त्वान्तर्धानमगमत्प्रोत्थायोर्मिरिवार्णवे ॥ ४१ ॥
ityākarṇya jaganmātā tavāstvevamiti svayam ,
uktvāntardhānamagamatprotthāyormirivārṇave 41
41. iti ākarṇya jaganmātā tava astu evam iti svayam
uktvā antardhānam agamat protthāya ūrmiḥ iva arṇave
41. iti ākarṇya jaganmātā "tava evam astu" iti svayam
uktvā arṇave ūrmiḥ iva protthāya antardhānam agamat
41. Having heard this, the Mother of the World (jaganmātā) herself said, 'So be it for you!', and like a wave that rises in the ocean (arṇava), she disappeared.
अथ सा राजमहिषी परितुष्टेष्टदेवता ।
श्रुतगीतेव हरिणी बभूवानन्दधारिणी ॥ ४२ ॥
atha sā rājamahiṣī parituṣṭeṣṭadevatā ,
śrutagīteva hariṇī babhūvānandadhāriṇī 42
42. atha sā rājamahiṣī parituṣṭeṣṭadevatā
śrutagītā iva hariṇī babhūva ānandadhāriṇī

42. Then, that queen, whose desired deity was completely pleased, became filled with joy (ānanda), like a doe that has heard a song.
पक्षमासर्तुकटके दिनारे वर्षदण्डके ।
क्षणनाभौ स्पन्दमये कालचक्रे वहत्यथ ॥ ४३ ॥
pakṣamāsartukaṭake dināre varṣadaṇḍake ,
kṣaṇanābhau spandamaye kālacakre vahatyatha 43
43. pakṣa māsa ṛtu kaṭake dināre varṣa daṇḍake
kṣaṇa nābhau spandamaye kālacakre vahati atha
43. atha kālacakre kṣaṇa nābhau pakṣa māsa ṛtu
kaṭake dināre varṣa daṇḍake spandamaye vahati
43. Then, as the wheel of time (kālacakra) moved on, with its hub (nābhi) consisting of moments (kṣaṇa), its sections (kaṭaka) composed of fortnights, months, and seasons, and its spokes (daṇḍaka) formed by days and years, all filled with movement (spanda)...
अन्तर्धिमाजगामास्याः पत्युस्तच्चेतनं तनौ ।
संदृश्यमानमेवाशु शुष्कपत्ररसो यथा ॥ ४४ ॥
antardhimājagāmāsyāḥ patyustaccetanaṃ tanau ,
saṃdṛśyamānamevāśu śuṣkapatraraso yathā 44
44. antardhim ājagāma asyāḥ patyuḥ tat cetanam tanau
saṃdṛśyamānam eva āśu śuṣkapatrarasaḥ yathā
44. asyāḥ tanau patyuḥ tat cetanam saṃdṛśyamānam
eva āśu antardhim ājagāma śuṣkapatrarasaḥ yathā
44. That consciousness (cetanam) of her husband (patyuḥ) swiftly vanished from her body (tanau), becoming imperceptible, just as the visible sap (rasaḥ) of a dry leaf (śuṣka-patra) quickly disappears.
रणखण्डितदेहेऽस्मिन्मृतेऽन्तःपुरमण्डपे ।
निर्जला नलिनीवासौ परां म्लानिमुपाययौ ॥ ४५ ॥
raṇakhaṇḍitadehe'sminmṛte'ntaḥpuramaṇḍape ,
nirjalā nalinīvāsau parāṃ mlānimupāyayau 45
45. raṇakhaṇḍitadehe asmin mṛte antaḥpuramaṇḍape
nirjalā nalinī iva asau parām mlānim upāyayau
45. asmin raṇakhaṇḍitadehe mṛte antaḥpuramaṇḍape
asau nirjalā nalinī iva parām mlānim upāyayau
45. When he, whose body was shattered in battle (raṇakhaṇḍitadehe), died (mṛte) within the inner palace pavilion (antaḥpuramaṇḍape), she (asau) experienced supreme (parām) despondency (mlānim), just like a lotus pond (nalinī) without water (nirjalā).
विषोष्णश्वसनध्वस्तसकलाधरपल्लवा ।
प्राप सा मरणावस्थां सशल्येव मृगी यथा ॥ ४६ ॥
viṣoṣṇaśvasanadhvastasakalādharapallavā ,
prāpa sā maraṇāvasthāṃ saśalyeva mṛgī yathā 46
46. viṣoṣṇaśvasanadhvastasakalādharapallavā
prāpa sā maraṇāvasthām saśalyā iva mṛgī yathā
46. sā viṣoṣṇaśvasanadhvastasakalādharapallavā
saśalyā mṛgī iva yathā maraṇāvasthām prāpa
46. She (sā) reached (prāpa) a dying state (maraṇāvasthām), just like a doe (mṛgī) pierced by an arrow (saśalyā iva), with her entire lower lip (adhara), delicate like a sprout (pallava), withered (dhvasta) by her hot (uṣṇa) and sorrowful (viṣa) breaths (śvasana).
प्राप सा तमसान्धत्वं तस्मिन्मरणमागते ।
दीपज्वालालवे क्षीणे सद्मश्रीरिव भूषिता ॥ ४७ ॥
prāpa sā tamasāndhatvaṃ tasminmaraṇamāgate ,
dīpajvālālave kṣīṇe sadmaśrīriva bhūṣitā 47
47. prāpa sā tamasāndhatvam tasmin maraṇam āgate
dīpajvālālave kṣīṇe sadmaśrīḥ iva bhūṣitā
47. tāsmin maraṇam āgate sā tamasāndhatvam prāpa
dīpajvālālave kṣīṇe bhūṣitā sadmaśrīḥ iva
47. She (sā) attained (prāpa) a state of profound darkness (tamasāndhatvam) when death (maraṇam) came upon him (tasmin āgate), just as the splendor (śrī) of a decorated house (bhūṣitā sadma) diminishes (kṣīṇe) when the lamp's flame (dīpajvālā), even a tiny flicker (alave), is extinguished.
कार्श्यमाप क्षणेनासौ बाला विरसतां गता ।
यथा स्रोतस्विनी स्रोतक्षये क्षारविधूसरा ॥ ४८ ॥
kārśyamāpa kṣaṇenāsau bālā virasatāṃ gatā ,
yathā srotasvinī srotakṣaye kṣāravidhūsarā 48
48. kārśyam āpa kṣaṇena asau bālā virasatām gatā
yathā srotasvinī srotakṣaye kṣāravidhūsarā
48. asau bālā kṣaṇena kārśyam āpa virasatām gatā
yathā srotasvinī srotakṣaye kṣāravidhūsarā
48. In an instant, that young woman became emaciated and lost her charm, just as a river, with its current dried up, becomes pale and discolored by salt.
क्षिप्रमाक्रन्दिनी क्षिप्रं मौनमूका वियोगिनी ।
बभूव चक्रवाकीव मानिनी मरणोन्मुखी ॥ ४९ ॥
kṣipramākrandinī kṣipraṃ maunamūkā viyoginī ,
babhūva cakravākīva māninī maraṇonmukhī 49
49. kṣipram ākrandinī kṣipram maunamūkā viyoginī

49. Quickly she became a wailing woman, then swiftly silent and mute, a woman separated [from her beloved]. Like a female ruddy goose, she became a proud woman facing death.
अथ तामतिमात्रविह्वलां सकृपाकाशभवा सरस्वती ।
शफरीं ह्रदशोषविह्वलां प्रथमा वृष्टिरिवान्वकम्पत ॥ ५० ॥
atha tāmatimātravihvalāṃ sakṛpākāśabhavā sarasvatī ,
śapharīṃ hradaśoṣavihvalāṃ prathamā vṛṣṭirivānvakampata 50
50. atha tām atimātravihvalām sakṛpā ākāśabhavā sarasvatī
śapharīm hradaśoṣavihvalām prathamā vṛṣṭiḥ iva anvakampata
50. atha sakṛpā ākāśabhavā sarasvatī tām atimātravihvalām
prathamā vṛṣṭiḥ hradaśoṣavihvalām śapharīm iva anvakampata
50. Then, the compassionate Sarasvati, who originated from the sky, took pity on that exceedingly distressed woman, just as the first rain sympathizes with a small fish (śapharī) that is distressed by the drying up of a lake.
