भूपीठेन सता तत्र मया तदनु मानव ।

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "O human, then, existing there as the surface of the earth, I experienced the self-awareness inherent in rivers and streams."
क्वचिन्मरणसाक्रन्दनारीकरुणवेदनम् ।
क्वचिदुत्ताण्डवस्त्रैणमहोत्सवमहासुखम् ॥ २ ॥

2. At times, I experienced the piteous suffering of women wailing at death. At other times, the immense joy of grand festivals featuring women dancing wildly.
क्वचिद्दुर्वारदुर्भिक्षदुराक्रन्दं दुरीहितम् ।
क्वचित्सकलसस्यौघसंपन्नघनसौहृदम् ॥ ३ ॥

3. At times, I experienced the lamentable outcry and evil deeds caused by irresistible famine. At other times, the profound good-will enriched by an abundance of all crops.
क्वचिदग्निमहादाहदग्धदेहोग्रवेदनम् ।
क्वचिज्जलप्लवालूनपुरपत्तनखण्डकम् ॥ ४ ॥

4. At times, I experienced the terrible suffering of bodies consumed by a massive conflagration. At other times, the fragmentation of cities and towns inundated by floods.
क्वचिच्चपलसामन्तकृतलुण्ठनमण्डलम् ।
क्वचिदुद्दामदौरात्म्यरक्षःपैशाचमण्डलम् ॥ ५ ॥

kvaciduddāmadaurātmyarakṣaḥpaiśācamaṇḍalam 5

5. Sometimes, it is a region of plunder perpetrated by restless feudatory chiefs; and sometimes, it is a domain characterized by the unrestrained wickedness of demons and goblins.
क्वचिज्जलाशयोल्लासवेल्लनोत्पुलकाग्रकम् ।
कन्दरोदरनिष्क्रान्तवातवेल्लितवारिदम् ॥ ६ ॥

6. Sometimes, it has mountain peaks thrilled by the delightful waving of water reservoirs; and where clouds are made to ripple by winds emerging from the depths of caves.
संविद्बोधोन्नमत्स्वाङ्गकेशोत्थाङ्कुरलोमकम् ।
वारिवाहनविक्षोभनतोन्नतलसत्तलम् ॥ ७ ॥
saṃvidbodhonnamatsvāṅgakeśotthāṅkuralomakam ,

7. It possesses hair-like sprouts that have risen from one's own limbs due to the awakening of consciousness (saṃvid) causing a rising thrill; and its shining surfaces are lowered and raised by the agitation of clouds.
सशृङ्गभैरवश्वभ्रपुराद्रिवनपत्तनम् ।
संविन्मण्डलसंचाललेखाङ्कमृदुकम्पनम् ॥ ८ ॥

saṃvinmaṇḍalasaṃcālalekhāṅkamṛdukampanam 8

8. It contains cities and towns, dreadful chasms with peaks, mountains, and forests; and it features a gentle trembling, marked with traces of the movement of the sphere of consciousness (saṃvid).
क्वचित्सामन्तसंक्षुब्धसैन्यसंहरणं रणे ।
क्वचित्सौम्यसुखासीनसर्वसामन्तमण्डलम् ॥ ९ ॥

9. Somewhere, there is the destruction of armies agitated by vassals in battle. Elsewhere, there is an assembly of all tranquil and comfortably seated vassals.
अरण्यं क्वचिदाशून्यमुल्लसद्वातझंकृति ।
जंगलं क्वचिदालूनव्युप्तसंपन्नसस्यकम् ॥ १० ॥
araṇyaṃ kvacidāśūnyamullasadvātajhaṃkṛti ,
jaṃgalaṃ kvacidālūnavyuptasaṃpannasasyakam 10
10. araṇyam kvacit āśūnyam ullasat vāta jhaṅkṛti
jaṅgalam kvacit ālūnavyuptasampannasasyakam
10. kvacit araṇyam āśūnyam ullasat vāta jhaṅkṛti
kvacit jaṅgalam ālūnavyuptasampannasasyakam
10. Somewhere, a desolate forest resonates with the hum of the wind. Elsewhere, cultivated land (jaṅgala) has thriving crops that have been harvested and sown.
हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णसरः फुल्लाम्बुजं क्वचित् ।
क्वचिन्मरुस्थलस्थूलस्तम्भनार्जुनमारुतम् ॥ ११ ॥
haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇasaraḥ phullāmbujaṃ kvacit ,
kvacinmarusthalasthūlastambhanārjunamārutam 11
11. haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇasaraḥ phullāmbujam kvacit
kvacit marusthalasthūlastambhanārjunamārutam
11. kvacit haṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇasaraḥ phullāmbujam

11. Somewhere, a lake (saraḥ) teeming with swans and karandava ducks, adorned with blossoming lotuses. Elsewhere, a desert (marusthala) with thick, obstructive, white/dusty winds.
क्वचिन्नदनदीवाहहेलानिकषघर्घरम् ।
क्वचिदङ्कुरकार्याङ्गसिक्तबीजस्य जृम्भणम् ॥ १२ ॥
kvacinnadanadīvāhahelānikaṣaghargharam ,
kvacidaṅkurakāryāṅgasiktabījasya jṛmbhaṇam 12
12. kvacit nadanadīvāhahelanikaṣaghargharam
kvacit aṅkurakāryāṅgasiktabījasya jṛmbhaṇam

12. Somewhere, there is the gurgling sound from the graceful flow and interaction of great rivers and rivers. Elsewhere, there is the germination of a seed, whose sprout-forming part has been moistened.
क्वचिदन्तस्तु कीटास्यमृदुस्पन्दनवेदनम् ।
मां त्वमेवाशु बुद्ध्वेह त्रायस्वेतीव बोधनम् ॥ १३ ॥
kvacidantastu kīṭāsyamṛduspandanavedanam ,
māṃ tvamevāśu buddhveha trāyasvetīva bodhanam 13
13. kvacit antaḥ tu kīṭa-āsya-mṛdu-spandana-vedanam mām
tvam eva āśu buddhvā iha trāyasva iti iva bodhanam
13. kvacit antaḥ tu kīṭa-āsya-mṛdu-spandana-vedanam tvam
eva mām āśu iha buddhvā trāyasva iti iva bodhanam
13. Sometimes, within, there is a sensation like the soft pulsation of an insect's mouth. This is an awakening, as if (it instructs): 'You alone, having quickly understood me here, protect me!'
शाखापरिकराभोगं मृद्भागाङ्गनिपीडनैः ।
मूलजालमवष्टभ्य क्वचिद्विटपधारिणम् ॥ १४ ॥
śākhāparikarābhogaṃ mṛdbhāgāṅganipīḍanaiḥ ,
mūlajālamavaṣṭabhya kvacidviṭapadhāriṇam 14
14. śākhā-parikara-ābhogam mṛd-bhāga-aṅga-nipīḍanaiḥ
mūla-jālam avaṣṭabhya kvacit viṭapa-dhāriṇam
14. kvacit śākhā-parikara-ābhogam mṛd-bhāga-aṅga-nipīḍanaiḥ
mūla-jālam avaṣṭabhya viṭapa-dhāriṇam
14. Sometimes, (it is seen as) a branch-bearer, possessing a widespread abundance of branches, pressing its root-network parts into sections of the earth, and thus grasping the network of roots.
अन्योन्यमलमाक्रम्य दिक्तटाङ्गनिपीडनैः ।
क्वचिदद्र्य स्थिनिबिडैरर्णवोल्लासवेल्लितम् ॥ १५ ॥
anyonyamalamākramya diktaṭāṅganipīḍanaiḥ ,
kvacidadrya sthinibiḍairarṇavollāsavellitam 15
15. anyonya-m alam ākramya dik-taṭa-aṅga-nipīḍanaiḥ
kvacit adri-asthi-nibiḍaiḥ arṇava-ullāsa-vellitam
15. kvacit anyonya-m alam ākramya dik-taṭa-aṅga-nipīḍanaiḥ
adri-asthi-nibiḍaiḥ arṇava-ullāsa-vellitam
15. Sometimes, having utterly pervaded everything mutually, it is agitated and swayed by the joyful surge of the ocean, achieving this by pressing its constituent parts against the shore-edges of all directions and by means of dense mountain rocks.
शुष्कपल्लवसंकोचनिबिडाङ्गनिपीडनम् ।
अमर्षणैः करैरार्कैः स्वरसाकर्षणं क्वचित् ॥ १६ ॥
śuṣkapallavasaṃkocanibiḍāṅganipīḍanam ,
amarṣaṇaiḥ karairārkaiḥ svarasākarṣaṇaṃ kvacit 16
16. śuṣka-pallava-saṃkoca-nibiḍa-aṅga-nipīḍanam
amarṣaṇaiḥ karaiḥ arkaiḥ sva-rasa-ākarṣaṇam kvacit
16. kvacit śuṣka-pallava-saṃkoca-nibiḍa-aṅga-nipīḍanam
amarṣaṇaiḥ karaiḥ arkaiḥ sva-rasa-ākarṣaṇam
16. Sometimes, there is the pressing of dense parts due to the shriveling of dry leaves, and the drawing out of its own essence by the relentless solar rays.
शृङ्गमन्दिरमातङ्गप्रहाराशनिभूरुहाम् ।
निबिडाङ्गोत्कटस्थैर्यपरुषापतनं क्वचित् ॥ १७ ॥
śṛṅgamandiramātaṅgaprahārāśanibhūruhām ,
nibiḍāṅgotkaṭasthairyaparuṣāpatanaṃ kvacit 17

17. Sometimes, there is a harsh impact, dense in its parts and extremely firm, resembling the striking force of peaks, temples, elephant-blows, thunderbolts, and trees.
निमीलितैक्षणानन्दतनूनामसमाक्रमम् ।
क्वचित्सूक्ष्मतरोल्लेखमङ्कुरोल्लासनं नवम् ॥ १८ ॥
nimīlitaikṣaṇānandatanūnāmasamākramam ,
kvacitsūkṣmatarollekhamaṅkurollāsanaṃ navam 18
18. nimīlitaiṣaṇānandatanūnām asamākramam kvacit
sūkṣmatarollekham aṅkurollāsanam navam

18. Sometimes, there is an uneven progression for those whose bodies are blissful from closed eyes. Elsewhere, there is a very subtle manifestation and the fresh blossoming of new sprouts.
मक्षिकायौकमशकनिवाससदृशं क्वचित् ।
कुड्यलेशकुभृङ्गारिहलहेलानिकर्षणम् ॥ १९ ॥
makṣikāyaukamaśakanivāsasadṛśaṃ kvacit ,
kuḍyaleśakubhṛṅgārihalahelānikarṣaṇam 19
19. makṣikāyūkamaśakanivāsasadṛśam kvacit
kuḍyaleśakubhṛṅgārihalhelānikarṣaṇam
19. kvacit makṣikāyūkamaśakanivāsasadṛśam
kvacit kuḍyaleśakubhṛṅgārihalhelānikarṣaṇam
19. Sometimes, there is a place resembling the dwelling of flies, lice, and mosquitoes. Elsewhere, there is the easy pulling down by means of wall fragments, a 'kubhṛṅgāri' (destructive agent), and ploughs.
शीतं शीतविशीर्णाङ्गजर्जरत्वग्विकीर्णवत् ।
पाषाणीभूतसलिलं क्वचित्परुषमारुतम् ॥ २० ॥
śītaṃ śītaviśīrṇāṅgajarjaratvagvikīrṇavat ,
pāṣāṇībhūtasalilaṃ kvacitparuṣamārutam 20
20. śītam śītaviśīrṇāṅgajarjaratvagvikīrṇavat
pāṣāṇībhūtasalilam kvacit paruṣamārutam
20. śītam śītaviśīrṇāṅgajarjaratvagvikīrṇavat
kvacit pāṣāṇībhūtasalilam paruṣamārutam
20. It is cold, resembling scattered things with decayed bodies and cracked skin, due to the cold. Elsewhere, there is water turned to stone and a harsh wind.
उद्दालीभूतमृद्वङ्गमज्जदन्तःकृमिव्रजम् ।
क्वचिदुद्भवदङ्गादिमूलं जलनिमज्जनम् ॥ २१ ॥
uddālībhūtamṛdvaṅgamajjadantaḥkṛmivrajam ,
kvacidudbhavadaṅgādimūlaṃ jalanimajjanam 21
21. uddālībhūtamṛdvaṅgamajjadantaḥkṛmivrajam
kvacit udbhavadaṅgādimūlam jalanimajjanam
21. kvacit uddālībhūtamṛdvaṅgamajjadantaḥkṛmivrajam
udbhavadaṅgādimūlam jalanimajjanam
21. Sometimes, there is an immersion in water, [manifesting as] a soft body that has become a pit, with swarms of worms immersed within it, and with roots emerging from its limbs and other parts.
शनैरन्तर्निलीनाम्बुकृताह्लादं बहिश्च
रसोन्नामाङ्कुररोमौघं क्वचिद्वर्षविजृम्भितम् ॥ २२ ॥
śanairantarnilīnāmbukṛtāhlādaṃ bahiśca
rasonnāmāṅkuraromaughaṃ kvacidvarṣavijṛmbhitam 22
22. śanaiḥ antar nilīnāmbukṛtāhlādam bahiḥ ca
rasonnāmāṅkuraromaudham kvacit varṣavijṛmbhitam
22. kvacit śanaiḥ antar nilīnāmbukṛtāhlādam bahiḥ
ca rasonnāmāṅkuraromaudham varṣavijṛmbhitam
22. Slowly, inside, pleasure is caused by the absorbed water, and outside, a mass of hair-like sprouts, swelling with sap, sometimes expands vigorously due to the rain.
तनुतरपवनविकम्पितकोमलनलिनीदलास्तरणैः ।
विहरणमिव मे विहितं सरोभिरङ्गेषु निर्वाणम् ॥ २३ ॥
tanutarapavanavikampitakomalanalinīdalāstaraṇaiḥ ,
viharaṇamiva me vihitaṃ sarobhiraṅgeṣu nirvāṇam 23

23. me aṅgeṣu,
tanutarapavanavikampitakomalanalinīdalāstaraṇaiḥ sarobhiḥ,
viharaṇam iva,
nirvāṇam vihitam
23. My final liberation (nirvāṇa) was accomplished, as if it were a pastime, on my limbs through the lakes which were covered with tender lotus leaves gently stirred by the exceedingly subtle wind.
