1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: "Then, (he described) a forest situated in its midst, whose high peaks seemed to kiss the masses of clouds, and whose extensive trunk area provided a resting place for the weary horses of the midday sun."
वितानमिव दिक्कुक्षिदीर्घं विटपबाहुभिः ।
आलोकयन्तं ककुभो विकासिकुसुमेक्षणैः ॥ २ ॥
vitānamiva dikkukṣidīrghaṃ viṭapabāhubhiḥ ,
ālokayantaṃ kakubho vikāsikusumekṣaṇaiḥ 2

2. (It was) like an awning, stretching long towards the horizons' sides with its arms of branches, observing the quarters (directions) with its eyes of blossoming flowers.
वातावधूलितानल्पभ्रमद्भ्रमरकुन्तलम् ।
प्रमार्जयन्तमाशानां मुखं पल्लवपाणिभिः ॥ ३ ॥
vātāvadhūlitānalpabhramadbhramarakuntalam ,
pramārjayantamāśānāṃ mukhaṃ pallavapāṇibhiḥ 3

3. (It was) having abundant, wandering bees like hair-curls, which were shaken by the wind, and wiping the faces of the directions with its hands of sprouts (new leaves).
कच्छैरुरुगुड्डच्छाच्छमञ्जरीपुञ्जकञ्जरैः ।
आस्यैरिव सताम्बूलैर्हसन्तं वनमालिकाः ॥ ४ ॥
kacchairuruguḍḍacchācchamañjarīpuñjakañjaraiḥ ,
āsyairiva satāmbūlairhasantaṃ vanamālikāḥ 4

4. (It was) laughing at the forest garlands with its expansive, dense, and exceptionally clear thickets of flowering bunches, as if with mouths reddened by betel.
लताविलसितोल्लासैः पुष्पकेसरधूलिभिः ।
आबद्धमण्डलाभोगं पूर्णेन्दुमिव दीप्तिभिः ॥ ५ ॥
latāvilasitollāsaiḥ puṣpakesaradhūlibhiḥ ,
ābaddhamaṇḍalābhogaṃ pūrṇendumiva dīptibhiḥ 5

5. Adorned with the joyful splendor of blossoming vines and the dust of flower pollen, it formed a vast circular expanse, resembling a full moon with its brilliant radiance.
संकटं विटपावल्या कुञ्जकूजच्चकोरया ।
छन्नया सिद्धवीथ्येव जगदुच्चतया श्रितम् ॥ ६ ॥
saṃkaṭaṃ viṭapāvalyā kuñjakūjaccakorayā ,
channayā siddhavīthyeva jagaduccatayā śritam 6

6. It was dense and impenetrable due to its masses of branches, where chakora birds cooed in the bowers. It was concealed as if it were the path of the Siddhas (accomplished beings), and was frequented due to its towering height in the world.
स्कन्धपीठोपविष्टानां लम्बमानैः कलापिनाम् ।
कलापैः शोभितं व्योम सेन्द्रचापैरिवाम्बुदैः ॥ ७ ॥
skandhapīṭhopaviṣṭānāṃ lambamānaiḥ kalāpinām ,
kalāpaiḥ śobhitaṃ vyoma sendracāpairivāmbudaiḥ 7

7. The sky was adorned by the hanging tail-feathers of peacocks perched upon its elevated ledges, resembling clouds graced with rainbows.
मग्नोन्मग्नैः प्रतिस्कन्धमाश्रितैश्चमरैः सितैः ।
पूर्णं मुहुर्दृष्टनष्टैः संवत्सरमिवेन्दुभिः ॥ ८ ॥
magnonmagnaiḥ pratiskandhamāśritaiścamaraiḥ sitaiḥ ,
pūrṇaṃ muhurdṛṣṭanaṣṭaiḥ saṃvatsaramivendubhiḥ 8

8. It was completely filled with white chamara deer, which, having settled on every ledge, were seen alternately sinking and emerging, appearing and disappearing repeatedly, just like a year is filled with moons that are seen and then lost.
कपिञ्जलकुलालापैः कलकोकिलकूजितैः ।
जीवंजीवविरावैश्च प्रगायन्तमिवोच्छ्रितैः ॥ ९ ॥
kapiñjalakulālāpaiḥ kalakokilakūjitaiḥ ,
jīvaṃjīvavirāvaiśca pragāyantamivocchritaiḥ 9

9. As if singing loudly with the calls of francolin flocks, the melodious cooing of cuckoos, and the cries of jīvaṃjīva birds.
कादम्बककदम्बैश्च कुलायकृतकेलिभिः ।
स्वर्गकोटरविश्रान्तैः सिद्धैर्जगदिवावृतम् ॥ १० ॥
kādambakakadambaiśca kulāyakṛtakelibhiḥ ,
svargakoṭaraviśrāntaiḥ siddhairjagadivāvṛtam 10
10. kādambakakadambaiḥ ca kulāyakṛtakelibhiḥ
svargakoṭaraviśrāntaiḥ siddhaiḥ jagat iva āvṛtam
10. kādambakakadambaiḥ kulāyakṛtakelibhiḥ ca
svargakoṭaraviśrāntaiḥ siddhaiḥ jagat iva āvṛtam
10. And as if the world were enveloped by flocks of kādambaka birds engaging in sport within their nests, and by perfected beings (siddhas) resting in celestial hollows.
प्रवालचलहस्ताभिरलिनेत्राभिराश्रितम् ।
अप्सरोभिरिव स्वर्गं मञ्जरीभिरितस्ततः ॥ ११ ॥
pravālacalahastābhiralinetrābhirāśritam ,
apsarobhiriva svargaṃ mañjarībhiritastataḥ 11
11. pravālacalahastābhiḥ alinētrābhiḥ āśritam
apsarobhiḥ iva svargam mañjarībhiḥ itastataḥ

11. Adorned here and there by flower clusters, whose trembling shoots resemble coral branches and whose eyes are like bees, as if by celestial nymphs (apsarases) in heaven.
सेन्द्रचापविलासेन कुमुदोत्कररेणुना ।
मञ्जरीपिञ्जराश्यामं विद्युत्वन्तमिवाम्बुदम् ॥ १२ ॥
sendracāpavilāsena kumudotkarareṇunā ,
mañjarīpiñjarāśyāmaṃ vidyutvantamivāmbudam 12
12. sa-indracāpa-vilāsena kumuda-utkara-reṇunā
mañjarīpiñjarāśyāmam vidyutvantam iva ambudam

12. With the splendor of a rainbow and the pollen of abundant water lilies, it appeared dark with yellowish flower clusters, resembling a lightning-bearing cloud.
सहस्रभुजशाखाख्यं पूरिताकाशकोटरम् ।
विश्वरूपमिवोन्नृत्तं चन्द्रार्ककृतकुण्डलम् ॥ १३ ॥
sahasrabhujaśākhākhyaṃ pūritākāśakoṭaram ,
viśvarūpamivonnṛttaṃ candrārkakṛtakuṇḍalam 13
13. sahasrabhujaśākhākhyam pūritākāśakoṭaram
viśvarūpam iva unnṛttam candrārkakṛtakuṇḍalam

13. Named as having a thousand arm-like branches, filling the hollow of the sky, it was like an exultant universal form (viśvarūpa) with the moon and sun serving as its earrings.
तले निषण्णनागेन्द्रं व्योम्नि तारागणाकुलम् ।
लतापुष्पमयं मध्ये खमण्डलमिवापरम् ॥ १४ ॥
tale niṣaṇṇanāgendraṃ vyomni tārāgaṇākulam ,
latāpuṣpamayaṃ madhye khamaṇḍalamivāparam 14

14. With the king of serpents seated at its base, crowded with hosts of stars in the sky, consisting of vines and flowers, it was like another celestial sphere (khamandala) in its middle.
पितामहमिवाशेषशैलकाननशालिनम् ।
फलपल्लवपुष्पाणां कोशमेकमिवावनौ ॥ १५ ॥
pitāmahamivāśeṣaśailakānanaśālinam ,
phalapallavapuṣpāṇāṃ kośamekamivāvanau 15
15. pitāmaham iva aśeṣaśailakānanaśālinam
phalapallavapuṣpāṇām kośam ekam iva avanau

iva aśeṣaśailakānanaśālinam pitāmaham iva
15. Like the Grandsire (Pitāmaha) (Brahmā) himself, adorned with all mountains and forests; like a single treasure-house of fruits, sprouts, and flowers upon the earth.
दधानं कलिकाजालं स्थगितं पुष्पधूलिभिः ।
कच्छेष्वर्ककरच्छन्नताराजालमिवाम्बरम् ॥ १६ ॥
dadhānaṃ kalikājālaṃ sthagitaṃ puṣpadhūlibhiḥ ,
kaccheṣvarkakaracchannatārājālamivāmbaram 16
16. dadhānam kalikājālam sthagitam puṣpadhūlibhiḥ
kaccheṣu arkakaracchannatārājālam iva ambaram
16. puṣpadhūlibhiḥ sthagitam kalikājālam dadhānam

16. Bearing a network of buds, concealed by flower pollen; like the sky (ambaram) where a network of stars is hidden by sunbeams in its regions.
विलोलविहगैः स्कन्धैः कुलायकुलसंकुलैः ।
वलितं भूतलं लोके पूर्णैर्जनपदैरिव ॥ १७ ॥
vilolavihagaiḥ skandhaiḥ kulāyakulasaṃkulaiḥ ,
valitaṃ bhūtalaṃ loke pūrṇairjanapadairiva 17
17. vilolavihagaiḥ skandhaiḥ kulāyakulasaṃkulaiḥ
valitam bhūtalam loke pūrṇaiḥ janapadaiḥ iva
17. loke bhūtalam vilolavihagaiḥ kulāyakulasaṃkulaiḥ skandhaiḥ valitam,
pūrṇaiḥ janapadaiḥ iva.
17. The ground (bhūtala) in the world (loka) was covered with branches bustling with restless birds and swarming with families of nests, appearing as if it were populous districts.
मञ्जरीसुपताकाढ्यं लतामण्डलमण्डितम् ।
पुष्पमङ्कोलधवलं पुष्पप्रकरपूरितम् ॥ १८ ॥
mañjarīsupatākāḍhyaṃ latāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitam ,
puṣpamaṅkoladhavalaṃ puṣpaprakarapūritam 18
18. mañjarīsupatākāḍhyam latāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitam
puṣpamaṅkoladhavalam puṣpaprakarapūritam
18. mañjarīsupatākāḍhyam latāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitam

18. (It was) rich with banner-like blossoms, adorned with bower-like creeper formations, white with Maṅkola flowers, and filled with masses of flowers.
कूजच्चकोरभ्रमरशुककोकिलसारिकम् ।
घनस्तबकसंछन्नकुहरोग्रगवाक्षकम् ॥ १९ ॥
kūjaccakorabhramaraśukakokilasārikam ,
ghanastabakasaṃchannakuharogragavākṣakam 19
19. kūjat cakorabhramaraśukakokilasārikam
ghanastabakasaṃchannakuharogragavākṣakam

19. (It was) echoing with chirping cakora birds, bees, parrots, cuckoos, and mynahs; and having formidable window-like openings hidden by dense clusters of flowers.
संचरत्पक्षिबहुलं जनमन्थरकोटरम् ।
सर्वासां वनदेवीनामन्तःपुरमिवोत्तमम् ॥ २० ॥
saṃcaratpakṣibahulaṃ janamantharakoṭaram ,
sarvāsāṃ vanadevīnāmantaḥpuramivottamam 20
20. saṃcarat pakṣibahulam janamantharakoṭaram
sarvāsām vanadevīnām antaḥpuram iva uttamam
20. saṃcarat pakṣibahulam janamantharakoṭaram sarvāsām vanadevīnām uttamam antaḥpuram iva.
20. (It was) abundant with wandering birds, and whose hollows were leisurely occupied by creatures, appearing like an excellent inner chamber (antaḥpura) for all the forest goddesses (vanadevī).
कूजद्भृङ्गतरङ्गौघैः पुष्पकेसरराजिभिः ।
राजमानं पतन्तीभिः सरिद्भिरिव पर्वतम् ॥ २१ ॥
kūjadbhṛṅgataraṅgaughaiḥ puṣpakesararājibhiḥ ,
rājamānaṃ patantībhiḥ saridbhiriva parvatam 21
21. kūjadbhṛṅgatarangooghaiḥ puṣpakesararājibhiḥ
rājamānaṃ patantībhiḥ saridbhiḥ iva parvatam
21. parvatam iva kūjadbhṛṅgatarangooghaiḥ
puṣpakesararājibhiḥ patantībhiḥ saridbhiḥ rājamānam
21. It (the elephant) shines like a mountain adorned with masses of humming bees that resemble waves, with rows of flower filaments, and with falling rivers.
भ्रमद्भिः पुष्पपत्रौघैर्मन्दवातविलासिभिः ।
वर्धमानैर्वृतस्कन्धं शुभ्राभ्रैरिव भूधरम् ॥ २२ ॥
bhramadbhiḥ puṣpapatraughairmandavātavilāsibhiḥ ,
vardhamānairvṛtaskandhaṃ śubhrābhrairiva bhūdharam 22
22. bhramadbhiḥ puṣpapatraughaiḥ mandavātavilāsibhiḥ
vardhamānaiḥ vṛtaskandham śubhrābhraiḥ iva bhūdharam
22. bhūdharam iva mandavātavilāsibhiḥ bhramadbhiḥ
puṣpapatraughaiḥ vardhamānaiḥ śubhrābhraiḥ vṛtaskandham
22. It (the elephant) has its trunk covered by masses of fluttering flowers and leaves that sway with gentle breezes, just like a mountain whose slopes are covered by rising white clouds.
मातङ्गकटघृष्टेन जानुस्तब्धेन पीठिना ।
आभोगिना बद्धपदं तरुणेव महाचलम् ॥ २३ ॥
mātaṅgakaṭaghṛṣṭena jānustabdhena pīṭhinā ,
ābhoginā baddhapadaṃ taruṇeva mahācalam 23
23. mātaṅgakaṭaghṛṣṭena jānustabdhena pīṭhinā
ābhoginā baddhapadam taruṇā iva mahācalam
23. mahācalam iva mātaṅgakaṭaghṛṣṭena jānustabdhena
ābhoginā taruṇā pīṭhinā baddhapadam
23. It (the elephant) is like a great mountain, with its base made firm by an expansive young pīṭhin (elephant) whose knees are stiff and whose temples are rubbed by (other) elephants.
विचित्रवर्णपक्षाणां स्कन्धकोटरचारिणाम् ।
वृतं खगानां वृन्देन भूतानामिव शार्ङ्गिणम् ॥ २४ ॥
vicitravarṇapakṣāṇāṃ skandhakoṭaracāriṇām ,
vṛtaṃ khagānāṃ vṛndena bhūtānāmiva śārṅgiṇam 24
24. vicitravarṇapakṣāṇām skandhakoṭaracāriṇām
vṛtam khagānām vṛndena bhūtānām iva śārṅgiṇam
24. vṛtam vicitravarṇapakṣāṇām skandhakoṭaracāriṇām
khagānām vṛndena śārṅgiṇam iva bhūtānām iva
24. It (the elephant) is surrounded by flocks of birds with variegated colored wings, which dwell in the hollows of its branches, like Lord Viṣṇu (śārṅgin) surrounded by hosts of beings (bhūtas).
स्तबकाङ्गुलिजालेन लोलेनाभिनयक्रियाम् ।
दिशन्तमिव वल्लीनां प्रवृत्तानां वनानिलैः ॥ २५ ॥
stabakāṅgulijālena lolenābhinayakriyām ,
diśantamiva vallīnāṃ pravṛttānāṃ vanānilaiḥ 25
25. stabakāṅgulijālena lolena abhinayakriyām
diśantam iva vallīnām pravṛttānām vanānilaiḥ
25. lolena stabakāṅgulijālena vanānilaiḥ

25. With its swaying clusters of leaves and flowers resembling fingers, it seemed to direct the gestural performance of the creepers, which were set in motion by the forest breezes.
कश्चिदेव निवासो मे नार्थिनामिति तुष्टितः ।
नृत्यन्तमिव बह्वाढ्यलतावलयवल्गनैः ॥ २६ ॥
kaścideva nivāso me nārthināmiti tuṣṭitaḥ ,
nṛtyantamiva bahvāḍhyalatāvalayavalganaiḥ 26
26. kaścid eva nivāsaḥ me na arthinām iti tuṣṭitaḥ
nṛtyantam iva bahvāḍhyalatāvalayavalganaiḥ
26. bahvāḍhyalatāvalayavalganaiḥ nṛtyantam iva
kaścid eva me nivāsaḥ arthinām na iti tuṣṭitaḥ
26. (It was) as if dancing with the swaying of its many abundant creeper-circles, (and expressing) with satisfaction, "This is indeed my dwelling, not for (just any) seekers."
लताकान्तैककान्तत्वाच्छृङ्गाररसनिर्भरम् ।
काकल्येव प्रगायन्तं मत्तालिनिजनिःस्वनैः ॥ २७ ॥
latākāntaikakāntatvācchṛṅgārarasanirbharam ,
kākalyeva pragāyantaṃ mattālinijaniḥsvanaiḥ 27
27. latākāntaikakāntatvāt śṛṅgārarasanirbharam
kākalyā iva pragāyantam mattālinīniḥsvanaiḥ
27. latākāntaikakāntatvāt śṛṅgārarasanirbharam
mattālinīniḥsvanaiḥ kākalyā iva pragāyantam
27. Being singularly beloved by creepers, (it was) filled with the sentiment of love, as if singing with a soft, sweet note, accompanied by the humming sounds of intoxicated female bees.
आदरोन्मुक्तकुसुमं सिद्धानां व्योमचारिणाम् ।
स्वागतानीव कुर्वाणं कोकिलालिकुलारवैः ॥ २८ ॥
ādaronmuktakusumaṃ siddhānāṃ vyomacāriṇām ,
svāgatānīva kurvāṇaṃ kokilālikulāravaiḥ 28
28. ādaronmuktakusumam siddhānām vyomacāriṇām
svāgatāni iva kurvāṇam kokilālikulāravaiḥ
28. ādaronmuktakusumam vyomacāriṇām siddhānām
kokilālikulāravaiḥ svāgatāni iva kurvāṇam
28. (It was) as if offering welcomes to the perfected beings (siddhas) who roam the sky, with the calls of cuckoos and swarms of bees, while having flowers cast down upon it with reverence.
लतापुष्पफलोल्लासं प्रान्तपञ्चमहीरुहाम् ।
विहसन्तमिवाच्छाभिः पुष्पकुड्मलदीप्तिभिः ॥ २९ ॥
latāpuṣpaphalollāsaṃ prāntapañcamahīruhām ,
vihasantamivācchābhiḥ puṣpakuḍmaladīptibhiḥ 29
29. latāpuṣpaphalollāsam prāntapañcamahīruhām
vihasantam iva acchābhiḥ puṣpakuḍmaladīptibhiḥ
29. latāpuṣpaphalollāsam prāntapañcamahīruhām

29. Joyous with the flowers and fruits of its creepers and the five trees at its edge, it seemed to be laughing with the clear radiance of its flower buds.
पारिजातमिवाजेतुमूर्ध्वगैः खगमण्डलैः ।
व्योमान्तराभिधावन्तमलमुद्धतकन्धरम् ॥ ३० ॥
pārijātamivājetumūrdhvagaiḥ khagamaṇḍalaiḥ ,

30. As if to conquer the Pārijāta tree, it, with its neck greatly uplifted, rushed into the midst of the sky, accompanied by flocks of birds flying upwards.
मध्यभागस्फुरत्तुङ्गैः स्तबकैर्घनपङ्क्तिभिः ।
सहस्राक्षत्वमतुलैर्जेतुमिन्द्रमिवोद्यतम् ॥ ३१ ॥

31. With its unparalleled, dense rows of tall clusters shining in its middle part, it seemed prepared to conquer Indra himself, who possesses a thousand eyes.
क्वचित्कुसुमगुच्छाच्छफणामणिगणावृतम् ।
पातालादुत्थितं शेषमिव व्योमदिदृक्षया ॥ ३२ ॥

pātālādutthitaṃ śeṣamiva vyomadidṛkṣayā 32

32. In some places, covered with a multitude of clear, jewel-like hoods of flower clusters, it seemed like Shesha, risen from the underworld (pātāla) with a desire to behold the sky.
रजसोद्भूलिताकारं द्वितीयमिव शंकरम् ।
छायया फलशालिन्या समस्तजनशंकरम् ॥ ३३ ॥
rajasodbhūlitākāraṃ dvitīyamiva śaṃkaram ,
chāyayā phalaśālinyā samastajanaśaṃkaram 33
33. rajasa udbhūlita-ākāram dvitīyam iva śaṅkaram
chāyayā phala-śālinyā samasta-jana-śaṅkaram

33. Its form, radiant as if dusted with pollen, was like a second Śaṅkara (Shiva). With its fruit-laden shade, it brought well-being to all people.
निबिडदलनिवाहभिन्नकोशैः कुसुमलतानवमण्डपैरुपेतम् ।
पुरमिव गगने कदम्बवृक्षं खगकुलनागरसंकुलं ददर्श ॥ ३४ ॥

34. He saw the Kadamba tree, which, with its buds bursting open from dense masses of leaves, was adorned with new pavilions of flowering vines. It appeared like a city in the sky, bustling with flocks of birds like its citizens.
