अस्मिन्विहरतो लोके लोकारामस्य धीमतः ।
श्रेयसे तिष्ठतो यत्नमुत्तमार्थाभिधायिनः ॥ १ ॥

1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: (This instruction is for one) who moves freely in this world, who delights the people, who is intelligent, who strives for ultimate welfare, and who declares supreme truths.
दामव्यालकटन्यायो मा ते भवतु राघव ।
भीमभासदृढस्थित्या त्वं विशोको भवेति च ॥ २ ॥
dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhavatu rāghava ,
bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvaṃ viśoko bhaveti ca 2
2. dāmavyālakata nyāyaḥ mā te bhavatu rāghava |
bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvam viśokaḥ bhava iti ca ||
2. rāghava,
mā te dāmavyālakata nyāyaḥ bhavatu tvam bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā viśokaḥ bhava iti ca
2. O Rāghava, let the maxim of the rope-snake (illusion) not be for you. Instead, by the firm establishment of a formidable radiance, you should become free from sorrow.
श्रीराम उवाच ।
दामव्यालकटन्यायो मा ते भूदित्युदाहृतम् ।
ब्रह्मन् किमेतद्भवता भवतापापहारिणा ॥ ३ ॥
śrīrāma uvāca ,
dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhūdityudāhṛtam ,
brahman kimetadbhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā 3
3. śrīrāma uvāca | dāmavyālakata nyāyaḥ mā te bhūt iti
udāhṛtam | brahman kim etat bhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā ||
3. śrīrāma uvāca dāmavyālakata nyāyaḥ mā te bhūt iti udāhṛtam brahman,
bhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā etat kim
3. Śrī Rāma said: "May the maxim of the rope-snake (illusion) not be for you" – thus has been declared. O reverend (brahman), what is this (maxim) from you, who removes the sufferings of cyclic existence (saṃsāra)?
भीमभासदृढस्थित्या त्वं विशोको भवेति च ।
प्रभो किमुक्तं भवता भवतापापहारिणा ॥ ४ ॥
bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvaṃ viśoko bhaveti ca ,
prabho kimuktaṃ bhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā 4
4. bhīmabhāsadr̥ḍhasthityā tvam viśokaḥ bhava iti
ca prabho kim uktam bhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā
4. tvam bhīmabhāsadr̥ḍhasthityā viśokaḥ bhava iti
ca prabho bhavatāpāpahāriṇā bhavatā kim uktam
4. By means of a firm stance, which is like a terrifying illusion, may you become free from sorrow. And, O Lord, what profound words have been uttered by you, the remover of the afflictions of worldly existence (saṃsāra)?
उदारयैतया शुद्धं संप्रबोधय मां गिरा ।
घनस्तापापहारिण्या प्रावृषीव कलापिनम् ॥ ५ ॥
udārayaitayā śuddhaṃ saṃprabodhaya māṃ girā ,
ghanastāpāpahāriṇyā prāvṛṣīva kalāpinam 5
5. udārayā etayā śuddham samprabodhaya mām girā
ghanaḥ tāpāpahāriṇyā prāvr̥ṣī iva kalāpinam
5. etayā udārayā śuddham girā tāpāpahāriṇyā mām
samprabodhaya ghanaḥ iva prāvr̥ṣī kalāpinam
5. Please awaken me, purified, with this noble, pure, and affliction-removing speech, just as a cloud enlivens a peacock during the rainy season.
श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
दामव्यालकटन्यायं भीमभासदृढस्थितिम् ।
श्रृणु राघव तच्छ्रुत्वा यदिष्टं तत्समाचर ॥ ६ ॥

dāmavyālakaṭanyāyaṃ bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthitim ,
śrṛṇu rāghava tacchrutvā yadiṣṭaṃ tatsamācara 6
6. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca dāmavyālakatanyāyam bhīmabhāsadr̥ḍhasthitim
śr̥ṇu rāghava tat śrutvā yat iṣṭam tat samācara
6. śrīvasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca rāghava dāmavyālakatanyāyam
bhīmabhāsadr̥ḍhasthitim śr̥ṇu tat śrutvā yat iṣṭam tat samācara
6. Sri Vasiṣṭha said: 'Listen, O Rāghava, to the principle (nyāya) of the rope-snake (dāmavyāla) and the firm stance (dr̥ḍhasthiti) that is like a terrifying illusion (bhīmabhāsa). Having heard that, do what you deem proper and desirable.'
आसीत्पातालकुहरे सर्वाश्चर्यमनोरमे ।
शम्बरो नाम दैत्येन्द्रो मायामणिमहार्णवः ॥ ७ ॥

7. There was a king of demons (daityendra) named Śambara, residing in a cavern of the netherworld (pātāla) that was charming and full of all wonders. He was a great ocean of magical illusion (māyā) and precious jewels.
आकाशनगरोद्यानरचितासुरमन्दिरः ।
कुत्रिमोत्तमचन्द्रार्कभूषितात्मीयमण्डलः ॥ ८ ॥

8. Whose temples for the asuras are built within the gardens of its sky-city, and whose own realm is adorned with splendid artificial moons and suns.
शिलाशकलसंभूतपद्माद्यैरमराचलः ।
अनन्तविभवारम्भपरिपूरितदानवः ॥ ९ ॥
śilāśakalasaṃbhūtapadmādyairamarācalaḥ ,
anantavibhavārambhaparipūritadānavaḥ 9
9. śilāśakalasaṃbhūtapadmādyaiḥ amarācalaḥ

9. A mountain of the immortals, [adorned] with lotuses and the like that have sprung from fragments of stone; whose demons are thoroughly satisfied by the inception of endless prosperity.
गृहरत्नाङ्गनागेयजितामरवधूध्वनिः ।
चन्द्रबिम्बकलापूर्णक्रीडोपवनपादपः ॥ १० ॥
gṛharatnāṅganāgeyajitāmaravadhūdhvaniḥ ,
candrabimbakalāpūrṇakrīḍopavanapādapaḥ 10
10. gṛharatnāṅganāgeyajitāmaravadhūdhvaniḥ

10. Whose melodious songs of women in its jeweled palaces conquer the voices of celestial nymphs; and whose trees in pleasure groves are full of the complete splendor of the moon's disk.
फुल्लनीलोत्पलव्यूहकरालरमणालयः ।
रत्नहंसध्वनाहूतहेमाम्बुरुहसारसः ॥ ११ ॥
phullanīlotpalavyūhakarālaramaṇālayaḥ ,
ratnahaṃsadhvanāhūtahemāmburuhasārasaḥ 11
11. phullanīlotpalavyūhakarālaramaṇālayaḥ

11. A delightful abode, splendid with vast arrays of blooming blue lotuses; and where cranes, amidst golden lotuses, are called forth by the cries of jeweled swans.
हेमपादपशाखाग्रकृताम्भोरुहकुड्मलः ।
करञ्जजालप्रपतन्मन्दारकुसुमाकरः ॥ १२ ॥
hemapādapaśākhāgrakṛtāmbhoruhakuḍmalaḥ ,
karañjajālaprapatanmandārakusumākaraḥ 12

12. Where lotus buds are formed by the tips of golden tree branches, and where a profusion of Mandāra flowers falls from masses of Karañja trees.
तर्कुयन्त्रमयानन्तदैत्यनिर्जितवासवः ।
हिमशीतानलज्वालानिर्मितोद्यानमण्डपः ॥ १३ ॥
tarkuyantramayānantadaityanirjitavāsavaḥ ,
himaśītānalajvālānirmitodyānamaṇḍapaḥ 13
13. tarkuyantramayaanantadaityanirjitavāsavaḥ

13. Where Indra was vanquished by endless demons who were like mechanical contrivances (tarku-yantra-maya), and whose garden pavilions were constructed from flames of ice-cold fire.
सर्वत्र कुसुमोद्यानजितानन्दननन्दनः ।
मायासर्वहृतव्यालमलयाचलचन्दनः ॥ १४ ॥

14. Where flower gardens everywhere surpassed even Indra's joy-giving Nandana garden, and where all the sandalwood trees of the Malaya mountain, along with their serpents, were brought by magical illusion (māyā).
हेमश्रीलोकलावण्यनिर्जितान्तःपुराङ्गनः ।
नानाकुसुमसंभारजानुदघ्नगृहाङ्गणः ॥ १५ ॥
hemaśrīlokalāvaṇyanirjitāntaḥpurāṅganaḥ ,
nānākusumasaṃbhārajānudaghnagṛhāṅgaṇaḥ 15
15. hemaśrīlokalāvaṇyanirjitāntaḥpurāṅganaḥ
nānākusumasaṃbhārajānudaghnagṛhāṅgaṇaḥ
15. hemaśrīlokalāvaṇyanirjitāntaḥpurāṅganaḥ

15. Where the women of the inner apartments surpassed in beauty the charm and splendor of the golden world, and whose house courtyards were knee-deep with abundant heaps of various flowers.
क्रीडार्थमृन्मयेशानजितचक्रगदाधरः ।
अजस्रोड्डीनरत्नौघताराढ्यखपुरान्तरः ॥ १६ ॥
krīḍārthamṛnmayeśānajitacakragadādharaḥ ,
ajasroḍḍīnaratnaughatārāḍhyakhapurāntaraḥ 16
16. kṛīḍā-artha-mṛnmaya-īśāna-jita-cakra-gadā-dharaḥ
ajasra-uḍḍīna-ratna-ogha-tārā-āḍhya-kha-pura-antaraḥ
16. (saḥ) kṛīḍā-artha-mṛnmaya-īśāna-jita-cakra-gadā-dharaḥ
(bhavati)
ajasra-uḍḍīna-ratna-ogha-tārā-āḍhya-kha-pura-antaraḥ
(ca asti)
16. He who, for sport, wields the discus and mace, having overcome an earthen Īśāna; and whose inner celestial city is abundant with stars resembling incessantly flying masses of jewels.
निशीथाखिलपातालशतचन्द्रनभस्तलः ।
स्वशालभञ्जिकालोकगीतगीतिरणोत्कटः ॥ १७ ॥
niśīthākhilapātālaśatacandranabhastalaḥ ,
svaśālabhañjikālokagītagītiraṇotkaṭaḥ 17
17. niśītha-akhila-pātāla-śata-candra-nabhaḥ-talaḥ
sva-śālabhañjikā-āloka-gīta-gīti-raṇa-utkaṭaḥ
17. (saḥ) niśītha-akhila-pātāla-śata-candra-nabhaḥ-talaḥ (bhavati)
sva-śālabhañjikā-āloka-gīta-gīti-raṇa-utkaṭaḥ (ca asti)
17. Whose firmament is like a hundred moons shining in all the netherworlds at deep night; and who is intensely prominent due to the resounding songs sung at the sight of his own śālabhañjikās (female figures).
मायैरावणनागेन्द्रविद्रुतामरवारणः ।
त्रैलोक्यविभवोत्कर्षपूरितान्तःपुरान्तरः ॥ १८ ॥
māyairāvaṇanāgendravidrutāmaravāraṇaḥ ,
trailokyavibhavotkarṣapūritāntaḥpurāntaraḥ 18
18. māyā-airāvaṇa-nāga-indra-vidruta-amara-vāraṇaḥ
trai-lokya-vibhava-utkarṣa-pūrita-antaḥ-pura-antaraḥ
18. (saḥ) māyā-airāvaṇa-nāga-indra-vidruta-amara-vāraṇaḥ
(bhavati)
trai-lokya-vibhava-utkarṣa-pūrita-antaḥ-pura-antaraḥ
(ca asti)
18. He who routed the divine elephants, including Airāvata, the king of elephants, through his illusory power (māyā); and whose inner palace is filled with the supreme grandeur and prosperity of the three worlds.
सर्वसंपत्तिसुभगः सर्वैश्वर्यनमस्कृतः ।
समस्तदैत्यसामन्तवन्दितोग्रानुशासनः ॥ १९ ॥
sarvasaṃpattisubhagaḥ sarvaiśvaryanamaskṛtaḥ ,
samastadaityasāmantavanditogrānuśāsanaḥ 19
19. sarva-sampatti-subhagaḥ sarva-aiśvarya-namaskṛtaḥ
samasta-daitya-sāmanta-vandita-ugra-anuśāsanaḥ
19. (saḥ) sarva-sampatti-subhagaḥ
(bhavati) sarva-aiśvarya-namaskṛtaḥ
(ca asti) samasta-daitya-sāmanta-vandita-ugra-anuśāsanaḥ
(ca asti)
19. He who is graced with all prosperity; who is saluted by all divine powers; and whose formidable command is bowed to by all the chieftains of the demons.
महाभुजवनच्छायाविश्रान्तासुरमण्डलः ।
सर्वबुद्धिगणाधाररत्नमण्डलमण्डितः ॥ २० ॥
mahābhujavanacchāyāviśrāntāsuramaṇḍalaḥ ,
sarvabuddhigaṇādhāraratnamaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ 20
20. mahābhujavanacchāyāviśrāntāsuramaṇḍalaḥ

20. He, under the shade of whose great, forest-like arms rested the host of asuras, was adorned with a jeweled crown which was the support for all groups of wise men.
तस्योत्सादितदेवस्य कठिनोड्डामराकृतेः ।
बभूव विपुलं सैन्यमासुरं सुरनाशनम् ॥ २१ ॥
tasyotsāditadevasya kaṭhinoḍḍāmarākṛteḥ ,
babhūva vipulaṃ sainyamāsuraṃ suranāśanam 21
21. tasya utsāditadevasya kaṭhina uḍḍāmarākṛteḥ
babhūva vipulam sainyam āsuram suranāśanam
21. tasya utsāditadevasya kaṭhina uḍḍāmarākṛteḥ
vipulam āsuram suranāśanam sainyam babhūva
21. That one, who had driven out the gods and whose appearance was rigid and formidable, possessed a vast demonic army that was destructive to the gods.
तस्मिन्मायाबले सुप्ते देशान्तरगते तथा ।
तत्सैन्यं तरसा जघ्नुश्छिद्रं प्राप्य किलामराः ॥ २२ ॥
tasminmāyābale supte deśāntaragate tathā ,
tatsainyaṃ tarasā jaghnuśchidraṃ prāpya kilāmarāḥ 22
22. tasmin māyābale supte deśāntaragate tathā tat
sainyam tarasā jaghnuḥ chidram prāpya kila amarāḥ
22. tasmin māyābale supte tathā deśāntaragate amarāḥ
chidram prāpya tat sainyam tarasā kila jaghnuḥ
22. Indeed, when that force of illusion (māyābala) was asleep and had gone to another land, the gods, having found a weak point, quickly struck down that army.
अथ शम्बरदैत्येन मुण्डिक्रोधद्रुमादयः ।
रक्षार्थमथ सामन्ताः स्वसेनासु नियोजिताः ॥ २३ ॥
atha śambaradaityena muṇḍikrodhadrumādayaḥ ,
rakṣārthamatha sāmantāḥ svasenāsu niyojitāḥ 23
23. atha śambaradaityena muṇḍikrodhadrumādayaḥ
rakṣārtham atha sāmantāḥ svasenāsu niyojitāḥ
23. atha śambaradaityena rakṣārtham atha
muṇḍikrodhadrumādayaḥ sāmantāḥ svasenāsu niyojitāḥ
23. Thereafter, for the sake of protection, feudatory chiefs like Muṇḍi and Krodhadruma were appointed by the demon Śambara within their own armies.
तानप्यन्तरमासाद्य जघ्नुर्देवा भयानकाः ।
व्योमान्तरगताः श्येनाः कलविङ्कानिवाकुलान् ॥ २४ ॥
tānapyantaramāsādya jaghnurdevā bhayānakāḥ ,
vyomāntaragatāḥ śyenāḥ kalaviṅkānivākulān 24
24. tān api antaram āsādya jaghnuḥ devāḥ bhayānakāḥ
vyomāntaragatāḥ śyenāḥ kalaviṅkān iva ākulān
24. bhayānakāḥ devāḥ vyomāntaragatāḥ śyenāḥ ākulān
kalaviṅkān iva tān api antaram āsādya jaghnuḥ
24. The terrifying gods, having entered their ranks, killed even them, just as falcons soaring in the sky kill distressed sparrows.
सेनापतीन्पुनश्चान्यांश्चकारासुरसत्तमः ।
चपलानुद्भटारावांस्तरङ्गानिव सागरः ॥ २५ ॥
senāpatīnpunaścānyāṃścakārāsurasattamaḥ ,
capalānudbhaṭārāvāṃstaraṅgāniva sāgaraḥ 25
25. senāpatīn punaḥ ca anyān cakāra asurasattamaḥ
capalān udbhaṭāravān taraṅgān iva sāgaraḥ
25. asurasattamaḥ punaḥ ca anyān senāpatīn cakāra
capalān udbhaṭāravān taraṅgān sāgaraḥ iva
25. The best of the asuras (asurasattamaḥ) again created other commanders, just as the ocean creates unsteady and loudly roaring waves.
देवास्तानपु तस्याशु जघ्नुस्तेन स कोपवान् ।
जगामामरनाशाय परिपूर्णे त्रिविष्टपम् ॥ २६ ॥
devāstānapu tasyāśu jaghnustena sa kopavān ,
jagāmāmaranāśāya paripūrṇe triviṣṭapam 26
26. devāḥ tān api tasya āśu jaghnuḥ tena saḥ
kopavān jagāma amaranāśāya paripūrṇe triviṣṭapam
26. devāḥ tasya tān api āśu jaghnuḥ tena saḥ
kopavān amaranāśāya paripūrṇe triviṣṭapam jagāma
26. The gods quickly killed even those [commanders] of his. Therefore, he, becoming enraged, went to the fully populated heaven for the destruction of the immortals.
तस्मात्तन्माययाभीताः सुरास्तेऽन्तर्धिमाययुः ।
मेरुकाननकुञ्जेषु मृगा गौरीहरेरिव ॥ २७ ॥
tasmāttanmāyayābhītāḥ surāste'ntardhimāyayuḥ ,
merukānanakuñjeṣu mṛgā gaurīhareriva 27
27. tasmāt tat māyayā abhītāḥ surāḥ te antardhim
āyayuḥ merukānanakuñjeṣu mṛgāḥ gaurīhareḥ iva
27. tasmāt te surāḥ tat māyayā abhītāḥ gaurīhareḥ
mṛgāḥ merukānanakuñjeṣu iva antardhim āyayuḥ
27. Therefore, those gods, terrified by his illusion (māyā), disappeared, like deer fleeing from a lion in the groves of the Meru forest.
क्रन्दत्क्षुद्रामरगणं वाष्पक्लिन्नाप्सरोमुखम् ।
शून्यं ददर्श स स्वर्गं कल्पक्षीणजगत्समम् ॥ २८ ॥
krandatkṣudrāmaragaṇaṃ vāṣpaklinnāpsaromukham ,
śūnyaṃ dadarśa sa svargaṃ kalpakṣīṇajagatsamam 28

28. He saw heaven empty, with hosts of crying, insignificant gods and the faces of apsaras wet with tears, resembling a world at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa) when all creation is destroyed.
विहरन्कुपितस्तत्र लब्धमाहृत्य सुन्दरम् ।
लोकपालपुरीं दग्ध्वा जगामात्मीयमालयम् ॥ २९ ॥
viharankupitastatra labdhamāhṛtya sundaram ,
lokapālapurīṃ dagdhvā jagāmātmīyamālayam 29
29. viharan kupitaḥ tatra labdham āhṛtya sundaram
lokapālapurīm dagdhvā jagāma ātmīyam ālayam
29. tatra kupitaḥ viharan labdham sundaram āhṛtya
lokapālapurīm dagdhvā ātmīyam ālayam jagāma
29. Wandering there in a rage, he took what he had acquired, burned the cities of the world-protectors (lokapālas), and then returned to his own abode.
एवं दृढतरीभूते द्वेषे दानवदेवयोः ।
देवाः स्वर्गं परित्यज्य दिक्षु जग्मुरदर्शनम् ॥ ३० ॥
evaṃ dṛḍhatarībhūte dveṣe dānavadevayoḥ ,

30. In this way, with the hatred between demons and gods having grown very strong, the gods abandoned heaven and went into hiding in all directions.
अथ शम्बरदैत्येन ये ये सेनाधिनायकाः ।
क्रियन्ते यत्नतस्तांस्तु जघ्नुर्यत्नपराः सुराः ॥ ३१ ॥
atha śambaradaityena ye ye senādhināyakāḥ ,
kriyante yatnatastāṃstu jaghnuryatnaparāḥ surāḥ 31
31. atha śambara daityena ye ye senādhināyakāḥ
kriyante yatnataḥ tān tu jaghnuḥ yatnaparāḥ surāḥ
31. atha śambara daityena ye ye senādhināyakāḥ yatnataḥ kriyante,
tān tu yatnaparāḥ surāḥ jaghnuḥ
31. Then, all the army commanders whom the demon Śambara painstakingly appointed, those very ones were killed by the zealous gods.
यावदुद्बेगमायातः शम्बरः कोपवान्भृशम् ।
तार्णोऽतिमात्रमनल इव जज्वाल सोच्छ्वसन् ॥ ३२ ॥
yāvadudbegamāyātaḥ śambaraḥ kopavānbhṛśam ,
tārṇo'timātramanala iva jajvāla socchvasan 32
32. yāvat udbegam āyātaḥ śambaraḥ kopavān bhṛśam
tārṇaḥ atimātram analaḥ iva jajjvāla sa-ucchvasan
32. śambaraḥ yāvat udbegam āyātaḥ bhṛśam kopavān
sa-ucchvasan atimātram tārṇaḥ analaḥ iva jajjvāla
32. As Shambara became greatly agitated and exceedingly angry, he blazed up, sighing heavily, like a fire consuming an immense pile of dry grass.
त्रैलोक्यमपि चान्विष्यन्न देवाँल्लब्धवानथ ।
परेणापि प्रयत्नेन निधानमिव दुष्कृती ॥ ३३ ॥
trailokyamapi cānviṣyanna devāṃllabdhavānatha ,
pareṇāpi prayatnena nidhānamiva duṣkṛtī 33
33. trailokyam api ca anviṣyan na devān labdhavān
atha pareṇa api prayatnena nidhānam iva duṣkṛtī
33. atha saḥ trailokyam api ca anviṣyan pareṇa prayatnena
api devān na labdhavān duṣkṛtī nidhānam iva
33. And then, even searching through all three worlds, he did not find the gods, despite his utmost effort, just as a wicked person (duṣkṛtī) would not find a hidden treasure (nidhanam).
ससर्ज मायया घोरानसुरांस्त्रीन्महाबलान् ।
बलरक्षार्थमुदितान्कालान्मूर्तिमिव स्थितान् ॥ ३४ ॥
sasarja māyayā ghorānasurāṃstrīnmahābalān ,
balarakṣārthamuditānkālānmūrtimiva sthitān 34

balarakṣārtham uditān kālān mūrtim iva sthitān
34. saḥ māyayā ghorān trīn mahābalān asurān sasarja te
balarakṣārtham uditān kālān mūrtim iva sthitān āsan
34. Through his magical power (māyā), he created three terrible, exceedingly strong Asuras. They had arisen to protect his strength and appeared like embodied forms of Time (Kāla).
निर्वृत्ता मायया भीमा बलपादपवाहिनः ।
उदगुस्ते महामायाः पक्षक्षुब्धा इवाद्रयः ॥ ३५ ॥
nirvṛttā māyayā bhīmā balapādapavāhinaḥ ,
udaguste mahāmāyāḥ pakṣakṣubdhā ivādrayaḥ 35
35. nirvṛttāḥ māyayā bhīmāḥ balapādapavāhinaḥ te
udaguḥ mahāmāyāḥ pakṣakṣubdhāḥ iva adrayaḥ
35. māyayā nirvṛttāḥ bhīmāḥ balapādapavāhinaḥ te
mahāmāyāḥ pakṣakṣubdhāḥ adrayaḥ iva udaguḥ
35. Born from his magical power (māyā), those formidable and powerful illusionists (mahāmāyāḥ), who were like destroyers of the trees of strength, then rose up like mountains shaken by (great birds') wings.
दामो व्यालः कटश्चेति नामभिः परिलाञ्छिताः ।
यथाप्राप्तैककर्तारश्चेतनामात्रधर्मिणः ॥ ३६ ॥
dāmo vyālaḥ kaṭaśceti nāmabhiḥ parilāñchitāḥ ,
yathāprāptaikakartāraścetanāmātradharmiṇaḥ 36
36. dāmaḥ vyālaḥ kaṭaḥ ca iti nāmabhiḥ parilāñchitāḥ
yathāprāpta-eka-kartāraḥ cetanāmātra-dharmiṇaḥ
36. iti dāmaḥ vyālaḥ ca kaṭaḥ nāmabhiḥ parilāñchitāḥ
yathāprāpta-eka-kartāraḥ cetanāmātra-dharmiṇaḥ
36. Those that are designated by names like 'Dāma,' 'Vyāla,' and 'Kaṭa,' act as the sole agents according to what is obtained, and whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is merely consciousness.
अभावात्कर्मणां ते च प्राक्तना नच वासनाः ।
निर्विकल्पकचिन्मात्रपरिस्पन्दैकधर्मकाः ॥ ३७ ॥
abhāvātkarmaṇāṃ te ca prāktanā naca vāsanāḥ ,
nirvikalpakacinmātraparispandaikadharmakāḥ 37
37. abhāvāt karmaṇām te ca prāktanāḥ na ca vāsanāḥ
nirvikalpaka-cinmātra-parispanda-eka-dharmakāḥ
37. karmaṇām abhāvāt ca te prāktanāḥ vāsanāḥ na ca
nirvikalpaka-cinmātra-parispanda-eka-dharmakāḥ
37. Due to the absence of actions (karma), they are not past latent impressions (vāsanāḥ); rather, their sole intrinsic nature (dharma) is the vibration of mere undifferentiated consciousness.
कर्मजीवकलां तन्वीमसारां च मनोभिदाम् ।
अपुष्टां कृत्रिमामन्तश्चोदयोदयमागताः ॥ ३८ ॥
karmajīvakalāṃ tanvīmasārāṃ ca manobhidām ,
apuṣṭāṃ kṛtrimāmantaścodayodayamāgatāḥ 38
38. karma-jīva-kalām tanvīm asārām ca manobhidām
apuṣṭām kṛtrimām antaḥ ca udaya-udayam āgatāḥ
38. antaḥ ca udaya-udayam āgatāḥ karma-jīva-kalām
tanvīm asārām ca manobhidām apuṣṭām kṛtrimām
38. And (they) have manifested from within a subtle, insubstantial, and mind-dividing, unnourished, artificial aspect of the individual soul (jīva) bound by actions (karma), arising repeatedly.
