भानुरुवाच ।
पितामहक्रमे तस्मिंस्ततस्ते बहुभावनात् ।
कर्मभिस्तैः समाक्रान्तमनस्कास्तस्थुरादृताः ॥ १ ॥
bhānuruvāca ,
pitāmahakrame tasmiṃstataste bahubhāvanāt ,
karmabhistaiḥ samākrāntamanaskāstasthurādṛtāḥ 1
1. bhānuḥ uvāca pitāmahakrame tasmin tataḥ te bahubhāvanāt
karmabhiḥ taiḥ samākrāntamanaskāḥ tasthuḥ ādṛtāḥ
1. bhānuḥ uvāca tataḥ tasmin pitāmahakrame bahubhāvanāt
taiḥ karmabhiḥ samākrāntamanaskāḥ te ādṛtāḥ tasthuḥ
1. Bhānu said: Thereafter, following that order of the grandfather (Brahmā) and due to their intense contemplation, they remained devoted, their minds completely engrossed by those actions (karma).
यावत्ते देहकास्तेषां तापेन पवनैस्तथा ।
कालेन शोषमभ्येत्य गलिताः शीर्णपर्णवत् ॥ २ ॥
yāvatte dehakāsteṣāṃ tāpena pavanaistathā ,
kālena śoṣamabhyetya galitāḥ śīrṇaparṇavat 2
2. yāvat te dehakāḥ teṣām tāpena pavanaiḥ tathā
kālena śoṣam abhyetya galitāḥ śīrṇaparṇavat
2. yāvat teṣām te dehakāḥ tāpena pavanaiḥ tathā
kālena śoṣam abhyetya śīrṇaparṇavat galitāḥ
2. Their bodies, affected by heat, winds, and time, gradually became emaciated and withered away, just like dried leaves.
जक्षुस्तान्देहकांस्तत्र क्रव्यादा वनवासिनः ।
इतश्चेतश्च लुठितान्सुफलानीव मर्कटाः ॥ ३ ॥
jakṣustāndehakāṃstatra kravyādā vanavāsinaḥ ,
itaścetaśca luṭhitānsuphalānīva markaṭāḥ 3
3. jakṣuḥ tān dehakān tatra kravyādāḥ vanavāsinaḥ
itaḥ ca itaḥ ca luṭhitān suphalāni iva markaṭāḥ
3. tatra vanavāsinaḥ kravyādāḥ markaṭāḥ suphalāni
iva itaḥ ca itaḥ ca luṭhitān tān dehakān jakṣuḥ
3. In that place, the flesh-eating forest dwellers devoured those bodies, which lay scattered here and there, just as monkeys would good fruits.
अथ ते शान्तबाह्यार्था ब्रह्मत्वे कृतभावनाः ।
तस्थुश्चतुर्युगस्यान्ते यावत्कल्पः क्षयं गतः ॥ ४ ॥
atha te śāntabāhyārthā brahmatve kṛtabhāvanāḥ ,
tasthuścaturyugasyānte yāvatkalpaḥ kṣayaṃ gataḥ 4
4. atha te śāntabāhyārthāḥ brahmatve kṛtabhāvanāḥ
tasthuḥ caturyugasya ante yāvat kalpaḥ kṣayam gataḥ
4. atha śāntabāhyārthāḥ brahmatve kṛtabhāvanāḥ te
caturyugasya ante yāvat kalpaḥ kṣayam gataḥ tasthuḥ
4. Then, with their external concerns pacified and their thoughts fixed on the nature of Brahman (brahman), they remained until the end of the four-age cycle (catur-yuga), at which time the cosmic day (kalpa) itself reached its dissolution.
क्षीयमाणे ततः कल्पे तपत्यादित्यसंचये ।
पुष्करावर्तकेषूच्चैर्वर्षत्सु कठिनारवम् ॥ ५ ॥
kṣīyamāṇe tataḥ kalpe tapatyādityasaṃcaye ,
puṣkarāvartakeṣūccairvarṣatsu kaṭhināravam 5
5. kṣīyamāṇe tataḥ kalpe tapati ādityasaṃcaye
puṣkarāvartakeṣu uccaiḥ varṣatsu kaṭhināravam
5. tataḥ kalpe kṣīyamāṇe ādityasaṃcaye tapati
puṣkarāvartakeṣu uccaiḥ kaṭhināravam varṣatsu
5. Then, as the cosmic age (kalpa) is ending, with a multitude of suns burning brightly, and the Puṣkarāvarta clouds raining loudly with a harsh sound -
वहत्सु कल्पवातेषु स्थित एकमहार्णवे ।
क्षीणेषु भूतवृन्देषु ते तथैव व्यवस्थिताः ॥ ६ ॥
vahatsu kalpavāteṣu sthita ekamahārṇave ,
kṣīṇeṣu bhūtavṛndeṣu te tathaiva vyavasthitāḥ 6
6. vahatsu kalpavāteṣu sthita eka-mahārṇave
kṣīṇeṣu bhūtavṛndeṣu te tathā eva vyavasthitāḥ
6. kalpavāteṣu vahatsu bhūtavṛndeṣu kṣīṇeṣu
sthita eka-mahārṇave te tathā eva vyavasthitāḥ
6. While the winds of the cosmic age (kalpa) blew, and the host of beings (bhūta) perished, (He) remained situated in the great single ocean; still, they (the subtle elements or unmanifested beings) remained in that very same state.
ततो रात्रिक्रमपरे सर्वां संहृत्य तां स्थितिम् ।
स्थिते त्वय्यात्मनि विभो ते तथैव व्यवस्थिताः ॥ ७ ॥
tato rātrikramapare sarvāṃ saṃhṛtya tāṃ sthitim ,
sthite tvayyātmani vibho te tathaiva vyavasthitāḥ 7
7. tataḥ rātrikramapare sarvām saṃhṛtya tām sthitim
sthite tvayi ātmani vibho te tathā eva vyavasthitāḥ
7. tataḥ he vibho rātrikramapare tvayi ātmani tām sarvām
sthitim saṃhṛtya sthite te tathā eva vyavasthitāḥ
7. Then, O all-pervading one (vibhu), when You, the Self (ātman), have withdrawn all that manifestation and come to rest, they (the subtle elements or unmanifested beings) remained in that very same state.
अद्य प्रबुद्धे भवति स्रष्टुमिच्छति संसृतिम् ।
सुखेनैव क्रमेणोच्चैस्ते तथैव व्यवस्थिताः ॥ ८ ॥
adya prabuddhe bhavati sraṣṭumicchati saṃsṛtim ,
sukhenaiva krameṇoccaiste tathaiva vyavasthitāḥ 8
8. adya prabuddhe bhavati sraṣṭum icchati saṃsṛtim
sukhena eva krameṇa uccaiḥ te tathā eva vyavasthitāḥ
8. adya prabuddhe bhavati saṃsṛtim sraṣṭum icchati
sukhena eva krameṇa uccaiḥ te tathā eva vyavasthitāḥ
8. Today, when You, the awakened Lord (bhavat), desire to create the cycle of existence (saṃsāra), easily and in increasing order, they (the subtle elements or unmanifested beings) remained in that very same state.
तथैते भगवन्ब्रह्मन्ब्रह्मणो ब्राह्मणा दश ।
त एते दश संसारा मनोव्योमनि संस्थिताः ॥ ९ ॥
tathaite bhagavanbrahmanbrahmaṇo brāhmaṇā daśa ,
ta ete daśa saṃsārā manovyomani saṃsthitāḥ 9
9. tathā ete bhagavan brahman brahmaṇaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ
daśa te ete daśa saṃsārāḥ manaḥ-vyomani saṃsthitāḥ
9. bhagavan brahman tathā ete brahmaṇaḥ daśa brāhmaṇāḥ
te ete daśa saṃsārāḥ manaḥ-vyomani saṃsthitāḥ
9. O venerable one (bhagavan), O Brahman, similarly, these ten Brahmans (creators) are born of Brahma. These ten cycles of existence (saṃsāra) are situated in the mind's space.
तेषामेकतमस्याहमयमाकाशमन्दिरे ।
भानुर्भुवि विभो कालकलाकर्मणि योजितः ॥ १० ॥
teṣāmekatamasyāhamayamākāśamandire ,
bhānurbhuvi vibho kālakalākarmaṇi yojitaḥ 10
10. teṣām ekatamasya aham ayam ākāśa-mandire
bhānuḥ bhuvi vibho kāla-kalā-karmaṇi yojitaḥ
10. vibho teṣām ekatamasya aham ayam bhānuḥ
ākāśa-mandire bhuvi kāla-kalā-karmaṇi yojitaḥ
10. O mighty one (vibho), among them (teṣām), I am one (ekatamasya), this sun (bhānuḥ) in the abode of space (ākāśa-mandire), appointed (yojitaḥ) to the task of the divisions of time on earth (bhuvi).
एष ते कथितः सर्गो दिशानामलसंभव ।
ब्रह्मणां संभवो व्योम्नि यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥ ११ ॥
eṣa te kathitaḥ sargo diśānāmalasaṃbhava ,
brahmaṇāṃ saṃbhavo vyomni yathecchasi tathā kuru 11
11. eṣaḥ te kathitaḥ sargaḥ diśām amala-saṃbhava
brahmaṇām saṃbhavaḥ vyomni yathā icchasi tathā kuru
11. amala-saṃbhava eṣaḥ te diśām sargaḥ vyomni brahmaṇām
saṃbhavaḥ kathitaḥ yathā icchasi tathā kuru
11. O pure-born one (amala-saṃbhava), this creation (sargaḥ) of the directions and the origin (saṃbhavaḥ) of the Brahmans in space (vyomni) has been narrated to you (te). Therefore, do as you wish (icchasi).
विविधकल्पनया वलिताम्बरं यदिदमुत्तम जागतमुत्थितम् ।
करणजालकमाहितमोहनं तदखिलं निजचेतसि विभ्रमः ॥ १२ ॥
vividhakalpanayā valitāmbaraṃ yadidamuttama jāgatamutthitam ,
karaṇajālakamāhitamohanaṃ tadakhilaṃ nijacetasi vibhramaḥ 12
12. vividha-kalpanayā valita-ambaram
yat idam uttama jāgatam utthitam
karaṇa-jālakam āhita-mohanam
tat akhilam nija-cetasi vibhramaḥ
12. uttama yat idam vividha-kalpanayā
valita-ambaram jāgatam utthitam
karaṇa-jālakam āhita-mohanam
tat akhilam nija-cetasi vibhramaḥ
12. O excellent one (uttama)! This entire worldly existence (jāgatam) that has arisen, where the sky (ambaram) is covered by various imaginings (vividha-kalpanayā), and which is a network of senses (karaṇa-jālakam) causing profound delusion (āhita-mohanam) - all of that (tat akhilam) is merely an illusion (vibhramaḥ) within one's own consciousness (nija-cetasi).
