अथ तेषां तदा तत्र ततस्तांस्तानदर्शयन् ।
पार्श्वगा वनवृक्षाब्धिशैलमेघवनेचरान् ॥ १ ॥

vana-vṛkṣa-abdhi-śaila-megha-vanacarān || 1 ||
1. Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Then, at that time and in that place, they showed them those various ones who were nearby: the forest trees, oceans, mountains, clouds, and forest-dwellers.
देव पश्यास्य शैलस्य येयमभ्रंकषाग्रभूः ।
समरुन्मध्यदेशादेरश्मदेशमुपेयुषः ॥ २ ॥
deva paśyāsya śailasya yeyamabhraṃkaṣāgrabhūḥ ,
samarunmadhyadeśāderaśmadeśamupeyuṣaḥ 2
2. deva paśya asya śailasya yā iyam abhraṃ-kaṣa-agra-bhūḥ
| samarut-madhya-deśa-ādeḥ aśma-deśam upeyuṣaḥ || 2 ||
2. O god, behold this mountain! Its cloud-scraping summit extends from its windy middle parts and so on, up to its rocky regions.
इमा बकुलपुन्नागनालिकेरकुलाकुलाः ।
विपिनावलयो वान्तविविधामोदमारुताः ॥ ३ ॥
imā bakulapunnāganālikerakulākulāḥ ,
vipināvalayo vāntavividhāmodamārutāḥ 3
3. imāḥ bakula-punnāga-nālikera-kula-ākulāḥ |
vipināvalayaḥ vānta-vividha-āmoda-mārutāḥ || 3 ||
3. These forest groves are crowded with multitudes of Bakula, Punnaga, and Coconut trees, and they have winds that diffuse various fragrances.
लुनात्युपत्यकां वार्धिः शैलशालिशिलावलीः ।
वनालीर्लहरीदात्रैरापादफलपल्लवाः ॥ ४ ॥
lunātyupatyakāṃ vārdhiḥ śailaśāliśilāvalīḥ ,
vanālīrlaharīdātrairāpādaphalapallavāḥ 4
4. lunāti upatyakām vārdhiḥ śaila-śāli-śilāvalīḥ |
vanālīḥ laharī-dātraiḥ ā-pāda-phala-pallavāḥ || 4 ||
4. The ocean cuts the valley, the rows of mountain-like rocks, and the forest groves - from their roots to their fruits and sprouts - with its wave-sickles.
अधित्यकासु मेघालीर्नृत्यतां स्वाम्बुभूभृताम् ।
धुनोति जलधिर्बालो गृहधूमावलीमिव ॥ ५ ॥
adhityakāsu meghālīrnṛtyatāṃ svāmbubhūbhṛtām ,
dhunoti jaladhirbālo gṛhadhūmāvalīmiva 5
5. adhityakāsu meghālīḥ nṛtyatām svāmbubhūbhṛtām
dhunoti jaladhiḥ bālaḥ gṛhadhūmāvalīm iva
5. bālaḥ jaladhiḥ nṛtyatām svāmbubhūbhṛtām
adhityakāsu meghālīḥ gṛhadhūmāvalīm iva dhunoti
5. The youthful ocean scatters the rows of clouds on the plateaus of the dancing, water-bearing mountains, just as (one scatters) a line of house smoke.
राकाब्धिपूरसंप्रोतशङ्खशाखास्तटद्रुमाः ।
चन्द्रबिम्बफलाः कल्पवृक्षा इव विभान्त्यमी ॥ ६ ॥
rākābdhipūrasaṃprotaśaṅkhaśākhāstaṭadrumāḥ ,
candrabimbaphalāḥ kalpavṛkṣā iva vibhāntyamī 6
6. rākābdhipūrasaṃprotaśaṅkhaśākhāḥ taṭadrumāḥ
candrabimbaphalāḥ kalpavṛkṣāḥ iva vibhānti amī
6. rākābdhipūrasaṃprotaśaṅkhaśākhāḥ candrabimbaphalāḥ
amī taṭadrumāḥ kalpavṛkṣāḥ iva vibhānti
6. These trees on the shore, whose branches are interwoven with conch-shells brought by the full-moon tide of the ocean, and whose fruits are moon-discs, shine like wish-granting trees (kalpavṛkṣa).
रत्नपुष्पभरापूर्णरक्तपल्लवपाणयः ।
भवन्तं पूजयन्तीव लतादारान्विता द्रुमाः ॥ ७ ॥
ratnapuṣpabharāpūrṇaraktapallavapāṇayaḥ ,
bhavantaṃ pūjayantīva latādārānvitā drumāḥ 7
7. ratnapuṣpabharāpūrṇaraktapallavapāṇayaḥ
bhavantam pūjayanti iva latādārānvitāḥ drumāḥ
7. latādārānvitāḥ drumāḥ ratnapuṣpabharāpūrṇaraktapallavapāṇayaḥ
bhavantam iva pūjayanti
7. The trees, accompanied by their creeper-wives, seem to worship you with their red sprout-like hands filled with abundant jewel-flowers.
प्रोतोर्मिमकरग्रासैर्दृषद्दन्तैरागुहामुखैः ।
ऋक्षवानृक्षवद्भूभृद्धत्ते घुरघुरारवम् ॥ ८ ॥
protormimakaragrāsairdṛṣaddantairāguhāmukhaiḥ ,
ṛkṣavānṛkṣavadbhūbhṛddhatte ghuraghurāravam 8
8. protaūrmimakaragrāsaiḥ dṛṣaddantaiḥ āguhāmukhaiḥ
ṛkṣavān ṛkṣavat bhūbhṛt dhatte ghurghurāravam
8. ṛkṣavān bhūbhṛt protaūrmimakaragrāsaiḥ dṛṣaddantaiḥ
āguhāmukhaiḥ ṛkṣavat ghurghurāravam dhatte
8. The Rkṣavat mountain, like a bear, emits a growling sound (ghurghurārava) with its cave-like mouths, its rock-like teeth, and its gulps of entangled waves and crocodiles.
महेन्द्रो मन्द्रगर्जाभिरभिक्षिपति गर्जतः ।
पर्जन्यानूर्जितो जन्यः प्रतिजन्यान्यथा जडैः ॥ ९ ॥
mahendro mandragarjābhirabhikṣipati garjataḥ ,
parjanyānūrjito janyaḥ pratijanyānyathā jaḍaiḥ 9
9. mahendraḥ mandragarjābhiḥ abhikṣipati garjataḥ
parjanyān ūrjitaḥ janyaḥ pratijanyān yathā jaḍaiḥ
9. mahendraḥ garjataḥ parjanyān mandragarjābhiḥ abhikṣipati,
yathā ūrjitaḥ janyaḥ jaḍaiḥ pratijanyān (abhikṣipati).
9. Indra assails the roaring clouds with deep rumblings, just as a mighty warrior assails his opponents with dull or inert weapons.
चन्दनारूषितः श्रीमाञ्जेतुं जलधिवेल्लनाः ।
समुद्यत इवोच्चोऽसौ मल्लो मलयपर्वतः ॥ १० ॥
candanārūṣitaḥ śrīmāñjetuṃ jaladhivellanāḥ ,
samudyata ivocco'sau mallo malayaparvataḥ 10
10. candanāruṣitaḥ śrīmān jetum jaladhivellanāḥ
samudyataḥ iva uccaḥ asau mallaḥ malayaparvataḥ
10. śrīmān candanāruṣitaḥ malayaparvataḥ asau uccaḥ jaladhivellanāḥ jetum samudyataḥ mallaḥ iva (asti).
10. Mount Malaya, majestic and anointed with sandalwood, appears like this tall champion (wrestler) who has risen to conquer the ocean's surging waves.
सर्वतः कचितोऽजस्रं रत्नवीचिभिरम्बुधिः ।
भूरत्नवलयभ्रान्त्या प्रेक्ष्यते सूर्यमार्गगैः ॥ ११ ॥
sarvataḥ kacito'jasraṃ ratnavīcibhirambudhiḥ ,
bhūratnavalayabhrāntyā prekṣyate sūryamārgagaiḥ 11
11. sarvataḥ kacitaḥ ajasram ratnavīcibhiḥ ambudhiḥ
bhūratnavalayabhrāntyā prekṣyate sūryamārgagaiḥ
11. sarvataḥ ajasram ratnavīcibhiḥ kacitaḥ ambudhiḥ sūryamārgagaiḥ bhūratnavalayabhrāntyā prekṣyate.
11. The ocean, constantly covered everywhere with waves of jewels, is seen by those moving in the sun's path (celestial beings) under the illusion of a vast, jeweled bracelet.
सरन्ति रत्नमूर्धानश्चलकानिलपायिनः ।
वानपूराः पर्वतकाः सर्पा इव नतोन्नतैः ॥ १२ ॥
saranti ratnamūrdhānaścalakānilapāyinaḥ ,
vānapūrāḥ parvatakāḥ sarpā iva natonnataiḥ 12
12. saranti ratnamūrdhānaḥ calakānilapāyinaḥ
vānapūrāḥ parvatakāḥ sarpāḥ iva natonnataiḥ
12. ratnamūrdhānaḥ vānapūrāḥ parvatakāḥ natonnataiḥ calakānilapāyinaḥ sarpāḥ iva saranti.
12. Forest-filling mountain streams, with sparkling jeweled crests, flow with undulations, just like swift, wind-drinking snakes (moving) over highs and lows.
भ्रमन्तो वीचिश्रृङ्गेषु मकरेभाः करोत्कटैः ।
हरन्ति सीकराम्भोदा मेघानुद्राविता इव ॥ १३ ॥
bhramanto vīciśrṛṅgeṣu makarebhāḥ karotkaṭaiḥ ,
haranti sīkarāmbhodā meghānudrāvitā iva 13
13. bhramantaḥ vīciśṛṅgeṣu makarebhāḥ karotkaṭaiḥ
haranti sīkarāmbhodāḥ meghān udrāvitāḥ iva
13. vīciśṛṅgeṣu bhramantaḥ karotkaṭaiḥ makarebhāḥ
sīkarāmbhodāḥ meghān udrāvitāḥ iva haranti
13. The mighty whale-elephants, roaming on the crests of the waves, scatter clouds of spray with their powerful trunks, as if driving away actual rain clouds.
आवर्तवलिताकारः सीकरोत्करकीर्णदिक् ।
पूर्णत्वात्तु शिरोऽशक्तो म्रियतेऽत्युत्करः करी ॥ १४ ॥
āvartavalitākāraḥ sīkarotkarakīrṇadik ,
pūrṇatvāttu śiro'śakto mriyate'tyutkaraḥ karī 14
14. āvartavalitākāraḥ sīkarotkarakīrṇadik pūrṇatvāt
tu śiraḥ aśaktaḥ mriyate ati utkaraḥ karī
14. āvartavalitākāraḥ sīkarotkarakīrṇadik pūrṇatvāt
tu śiraḥ aśaktaḥ ati utkaraḥ karī mriyate
14. Its form is contorted by whirlpools, and all directions are strewn with masses of spray. But due to its overwhelming fullness, this majestic creature (karī), with its head rendered powerless, dies.
विविधप्राणिसंपूर्णाः सजलाद्रिनतोन्नताः ।
यथैवाम्भोधयः सर्वास्तथैव द्वीपभूमयः ॥ १५ ॥
vividhaprāṇisaṃpūrṇāḥ sajalādrinatonnatāḥ ,
yathaivāmbhodhayaḥ sarvāstathaiva dvīpabhūmayaḥ 15
15. vividhaprāṇisampūrṇāḥ sajalādrinatōnnatāḥ yathā
eva ambhodhayaḥ sarvāḥ tathā eva dvīpabhūmayaḥ
15. yathā eva ambhodhayaḥ tathā eva sarvāḥ dvīpabhūmayaḥ
vividhaprāṇisampūrṇāḥ sajalādrinatōnnatāḥ
15. Just as all the oceans are teeming with diverse living beings and characterized by uneven terrain (with mountains and water, both depressed and elevated), similarly are all the island lands.
आवर्तानात्मनोऽनन्यानप्यन्यानिव भास्वरान् ।
गृह्यमाणानसद्रूपान्दृश्यमानानपि स्फुटान् ॥ १६ ॥
āvartānātmano'nanyānapyanyāniva bhāsvarān ,
gṛhyamāṇānasadrūpāndṛśyamānānapi sphuṭān 16
16. āvartān ātmanaḥ ananyān api anyān iva bhāsvarān
gṛhyamāṇān asadrūpān dṛśyamānān api sphuṭān
16. ātmanaḥ ananyān api anyān iva bhāsvarān
asadrūpān dṛśyamānān api sphuṭān āvartān
16. One perceives whirlpools that are not different from the self (ātman) yet appear as if they are distinct; they are brilliant, apprehended, though having unreal forms, and yet are clearly visible and manifest.
तरङ्गतरलानन्तर्जडानप्यम्बुधिश्चलान् ।
धत्ते ब्रह्मजगन्तीव सान्तानप्यन्तवर्जितान् ॥ १७ ॥
taraṅgataralānantarjaḍānapyambudhiścalān ,
dhatte brahmajagantīva sāntānapyantavarjitān 17
17. taraṅgataralān anantān antarjaḍān api ambudhiḥ calān
dhatte brahmajaganti iva sāntān api antavarjitān
17. ambudhiḥ brahmajaganti iva taraṅgataralān anantān
antarjaḍān api calān sāntān api antavarjitān dhatte
17. Just as Brahman sustains the worlds, so the ocean holds things that are restless from waves, endless, and inherently inert (jaḍa), as well as those that are constantly moving. It encompasses both things that have an end and those that are boundless.
यानन्तरिन्द्रवद्भानुमणीन्धत्तेऽम्बुधिर्बहून् ।
मन्थापहृतसर्वस्वो देवेभ्यः परिरक्षितान् ॥ १८ ॥
yānantarindravadbhānumaṇīndhatte'mbudhirbahūn ,
manthāpahṛtasarvasvo devebhyaḥ parirakṣitān 18
18. yān anantaraḥ indravat bhānumaṇīn dhatte ambudhiḥ
bahūn manthāpahṛtasarvasvaḥ devebhyaḥ parirakṣitān
18. manthāpahṛtasarvasvaḥ ambudhiḥ anantaraḥ dhatte yān
bahūn bhānumaṇīn indravat devebhyaḥ parirakṣitān
18. The boundless ocean, whose entire wealth was plundered by the churning, holds many radiant gems (bhānumaṇīn) that are like Indra's (in their splendor) and were protected from the gods.
दृश्यमानान्महातेजस्तथा पातालतोऽप्यलम् ।
प्रतिबिम्बविभंग्यान्तरसत्यानिव गोपितान् ॥ १९ ॥
dṛśyamānānmahātejastathā pātālato'pyalam ,
pratibimbavibhaṃgyāntarasatyāniva gopitān 19
19. dṛśyamānān mahātejasaḥ tathā pātālataḥ api alam
pratibimbavibhaṅgyā antar asatyān iva gopitān
19. dṛśyamānān mahātejasaḥ tathā pātālataḥ api alam
pratibimbavibhaṅgyā antar asatyān iva gopitān
19. The gems (bhānumaṇīn), though visible, of great splendor, and exceedingly (visible) even from the netherworld (pātāla), are nevertheless concealed as if they were internally unreal entities due to the distortion of reflections.
तेषां मध्यादेकमेकं प्रत्यहं पश्चिमार्णवे ।
निक्षेपाय क्षिपति यं तेन मन्ये दिनं भवेत् ॥ २० ॥
teṣāṃ madhyādekamekaṃ pratyahaṃ paścimārṇave ,
nikṣepāya kṣipati yaṃ tena manye dinaṃ bhavet 20
20. teṣām madhyāt ekam ekam pratyaham paścimārṇave
nikṣepāya kṣipati yam tena manye dinam bhavet
20. teṣām madhyāt ekam ekam yam pratyaham paścimārṇave
nikṣepāya kṣipati tena dinam bhavet manye
20. From among those (gems), one by one, it (the ocean) casts daily into the western ocean for storage. I believe that by this act, a day comes into existence.
नानादिग्देशपयसामब्धौ साधुसमागमः ।
यात्रायामिव लोकानां मिथः कलकलान्वितः ॥ २१ ॥
nānādigdeśapayasāmabdhau sādhusamāgamaḥ ,
yātrāyāmiva lokānāṃ mithaḥ kalakalānvitaḥ 21
21. nānā-dig-deśa-payasām abdhau sādhu-samāgamaḥ
yātrāyām iva lokānām mithaḥ kalakalānvitaḥ
21. sādhu-samāgamaḥ nānā-dig-deśa-payasām abdhau
iva lokānām yātrāyām mithaḥ kalakalānvitaḥ iva
21. The assembly of virtuous people (sādhu-samāgama) is comparable to the convergence of waters from diverse lands and directions into an ocean. It is also like the mutually boisterous gathering of people during a pilgrimage.
जलेचरावरा नूनं सागरार्णवसंगमे ।
अन्योन्यवेल्लनाद्युद्धं न कदाचन शाम्यति ॥ २२ ॥
jalecarāvarā nūnaṃ sāgarārṇavasaṃgame ,
anyonyavellanādyuddhaṃ na kadācana śāmyati 22
22. jale-cara-avarāḥ nūnam sāgara-arṇava-saṅgame
anyonya-vellana-āt yuddham na kadācana śāmyati
22. nūnam jale-cara-avarāḥ sāgara-arṇava-saṅgame
anyonya-vellana-āt yuddham na kadācana śāmyati
22. Indeed, at the confluence of oceans, the lesser aquatic creatures (jale-cara-avara) engage in a battle that never ceases, a conflict arising from their mutual tossing and churning.
ताम्यत्तिमितरङ्गाग्रनर्तनावर्तविभ्रमम् ।
वलयन्वायुरायाति वान्तसीकरमौक्तिकैः ॥ २३ ॥
tāmyattimitaraṅgāgranartanāvartavibhramam ,
valayanvāyurāyāti vāntasīkaramauktikaiḥ 23
23. tāmyat-timi-taraṅga-agra-nartana-āvarta-vibhramam
valayan vāyuḥ āyāti vānta-sīkara-mauktikaiḥ
23. vāyuḥ valayan tāmyat-timi-taraṅga-agra-nartana-āvarta-vibhramam
vānta-sīkara-mauktikaiḥ āyāti
23. The wind arrives, churning (valayan) and creating a dazzling display (vibhrama) of dancing whirlpools (āvarta-nartana) at the crests of waves (taraṅga-agra), which are agitated by exhausted great fish (tāmyat-timi). It is accompanied by pearls (mauktika) formed from the spray (sīkara) it expels (vānta).
सरिन्मुक्तालतामध्यमध्यस्थाब्दमणीश्वराः ।
दीर्घाः खणखणायन्ते चञ्चलाः सर्वतोऽम्बुधेः ॥ २४ ॥
sarinmuktālatāmadhyamadhyasthābdamaṇīśvarāḥ ,
dīrghāḥ khaṇakhaṇāyante cañcalāḥ sarvato'mbudheḥ 24
24. sarit-muktā-latā-madhya-madhyastha-abda-maṇi-īśvarāḥ
dīrghāḥ khaṇakhaṇāyante cañcalāḥ sarvataḥ ambudheḥ
24. dīrghāḥ cañcalāḥ sarit-muktā-latā-madhya-madhyastha-abda-maṇi-īśvarāḥ
ambudheḥ sarvataḥ khaṇakhaṇāyante
24. Long and shimmering (cañcala), making a clanging sound (khaṇakhaṇāyante) everywhere around the ocean (ambudhi), are these supreme jewels, which resemble cloud-gems (abda-maṇi-īśvara) nestled deeply (madhya-madhyastha) within the pearl-creepers (muktā-latā) formed by rivers (sarit).
महेन्द्राद्रेर्गुहागेहपरावृत्तार्णवाध्वनाम् ।
भांकारिण्यो भुवः सिद्धसाध्यानां सुसुखावहः ॥ २५ ॥
mahendrādrerguhāgehaparāvṛttārṇavādhvanām ,
bhāṃkāriṇyo bhuvaḥ siddhasādhyānāṃ susukhāvahaḥ 25
25. mahendrādreḥ guhāgehaparāvṛttārṇavādhvanām
bhāṃkāriṇyaḥ bhuvaḥ siddhasādhyānām susukhāvahaḥ
25. mahendrādreḥ guhāgehaparāvṛttārṇavādhvanām
bhuvaḥ bhāṃkāriṇyaḥ siddhasādhyānām susukhāvahaḥ
25. The winds, whose ocean-paths turn back into the cave-homes of Mahendra mountain, roaring from the earth, bring great comfort to the Siddhas and Sādhyas.
मन्दरः कन्दरोद्गीर्णैः प्रसरैर्मातरिश्वनः ।
कम्पाकुलवनाभोगः पुष्पमेघांस्तनोति खे ॥ २६ ॥
mandaraḥ kandarodgīrṇaiḥ prasarairmātariśvanaḥ ,
kampākulavanābhogaḥ puṣpameghāṃstanoti khe 26
26. mandaraḥ kandarodgīrṇaiḥ prasaraiḥ mātariśvanaḥ
kampākulavanābhogaḥ puṣpameghān tanoti khe
26. kandarodgīrṇaiḥ mātariśvanaḥ prasaraiḥ
kampākulavanābhogaḥ mandaraḥ khe puṣpameghān tanoti
26. Mandara mountain, whose expanse of forests is agitated by the trembling caused by the currents of wind emitted from its caves, spreads flower-clouds in the sky.
चूतनीपकदम्बाढ्यगन्धमादनकन्दरान् ।
विशन्ति मेघहरिणास्तडित्तरललोचनाः ॥ २७ ॥
cūtanīpakadambāḍhyagandhamādanakandarān ,
viśanti meghahariṇāstaḍittaralalocanāḥ 27
27. cūtanīpakadambāḍhyagandhamādanakandarān
viśanti meghahariṇāḥ taḍittaralalocanāḥ
27. taḍittaralalocanāḥ meghahariṇāḥ
cūtanīpakadambāḍhyagandhamādanakandarān viśanti
27. The cloud-deer, whose eyes flicker like lightning, enter the caves of Gandhamadana mountain, which are abundant with mango, nīpa, and kadamba trees.
हिमवत्कन्दरोद्गीर्णा वल्लीवलयताण्डवम् ।
तन्वाना वायवो यान्ति विभिन्नाब्दाब्धिवीचयः ॥ २८ ॥
himavatkandarodgīrṇā vallīvalayatāṇḍavam ,
tanvānā vāyavo yānti vibhinnābdābdhivīcayaḥ 28
28. himavatkandarodgīrṇāḥ vallīvalayataṇḍavam
tanvānāḥ vāyavaḥ yānti vibhinnābdābdhivīcayaḥ
28. himavatkandarodgīrṇāḥ vibhinnābdābdhivīcayaḥ
vallīvalayataṇḍavam tanvānāḥ vāyavaḥ yānti
28. The winds, which are emitted from the caves of the Himalaya (Himavat), having waves like scattered clouds and oceans, move, creating a vigorous dance of creeper-circles.
तात चूतकदम्बाग्रपरामर्शसुगन्धयः ।
वलयन्त्यब्धिकल्लोलान्गन्धमादनवायवः ॥ २९ ॥
tāta cūtakadambāgraparāmarśasugandhayaḥ ,
valayantyabdhikallolāngandhamādanavāyavaḥ 29
29. tāta cūtakadambāgrapamarśasugandhayaḥ
valayanti abdhikallolān gandhamādanavāyavaḥ
29. tāta gandhamādanavāyavaḥ
cūtakadambāgrapamarśasugandhayaḥ abdhikallolān valayanti
29. Dear one, the winds from Gandhamādana, fragrant from touching the tips of mango and kadamba trees, cause the ocean's waves to swirl.
जलदान्वलयन्वायुरलकालकतां गतान् ।
इत आयाति पुष्पाभ्रं रचयन्वनवीथिषु ॥ ३० ॥

30. The wind, making the clouds swirl and assume the appearance of curly locks, comes from this direction, creating flower-clouds along the forest paths.

35. On the mountain, amidst the heaps of withered leaves and where the bodies of the Śabarī women lie, the line of forests appears like a city, filled with leaf-clad Śabara archers.
अब्ध्यद्रिसरिदम्भोदवनलेखाङ्गिका दिशः ।
त्वत्प्रतापबलैरेता हसन्तीवार्करश्मिभिः ॥ ३६ ॥

36. These directions, having oceans, mountains, rivers, clouds, and lines of forests as their very limbs, seem to be laughing with the power of your glory, as if with the rays of the sun.

पार्श्वद्वयस्थपरिवृत्तपदात्समुद्राद्व्यावृत्तमुग्धवनितापुरुषायितानि ॥ ३७ ॥

37. Here, in the forest paths by the mountains, the flower beds arranged by the celestial nymphs (vidyādharī) depict the charming women's love games, in which they assumed the male role, having withdrawn from the ocean as its waves receded from both sides of the shore.
