मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-9, verse-96

प्रजनार्थं स्त्रियः सृष्टाः संतानार्थं च मानवः ।
तस्मात साधारणो धर्मः श्रुतौ पत्न्या सहोदितः ॥९६॥
96. prajanārthaṁ striyaḥ sṛṣṭāḥ saṁtānārthaṁ ca mānavaḥ ,
tasmāt sādhāraṇo dharmaḥ śrutau patnyā sahoditaḥ.

96. Women were created for procreation, and man for the sake of offspring. Therefore, a common essential nature (dharma) is declared in the revealed texts (śruti) in association with the wife.
