मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-9, verse-171

मातापितृभ्यामुत्सृष्टं तयोरन्यतरेण वा ।
यं पुत्रं परिगृह्णीयादपविद्धः स उच्यते ॥१७१॥
171. mātāpitṛbhyāmutsṛṣṭaṁ tayoranyatareṇa vā ,
yaṁ putraṁ parigṛhṇīyādapaviddhaḥ sa ucyate.
171. mātāpitṛbhyām utsṛṣṭam tayoḥ anyatareṇa vā
yam putram parigṛhṇīyāt apaviddhaḥ saḥ ucyate
171. yam putram mātāpitṛbhyām vā tayoḥ anyatareṇa utsṛṣṭam (san) (kaścit) parigṛhṇīyāt,
saḥ apaviddhaḥ ucyate.
171. A son who is abandoned by his mother and father, or by either one of them, and whom one adopts, is called an `apaviddha` (son).
