महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-2, verse-234

एतदखिलमाख्यातं भारतं पर्वसंग्रहात् ।
अष्टादश समाजग्मुरक्षौहिण्यो युयुत्सया ।
तन्महद्दारुणं युद्धमहान्यष्टादशाभवत् ॥२३४॥
234. etadakhilamākhyātaṁ bhārataṁ parvasaṁgrahāt ,
aṣṭādaśa samājagmurakṣauhiṇyo yuyutsayā ,
tanmahaddāruṇaṁ yuddhamahānyaṣṭādaśābhavat.
234. etat akhilam ākhyātam bhāratam
parvasaṅgrahāt | aṣṭādaśa samājagmuḥ
akṣauhiṇyaḥ yuyutsayā | tat mahat
dāruṇam yuddham ahāni aṣṭādaśa abhavat
234. This entire Bhārata (Mahābhārata) has been narrated by way of a summary of its sections. Eighteen akṣauhiṇīs (divisions of an army) gathered with the desire to fight. That great and terrible war lasted for eighteen days.
