The number of `nakṣatras` counted from `Kṛttikā` (the fire-star) up to the birth `nakṣatra` should be divided by nine. From the remainder (obtained from this division), the `daśā` lord is to be determined, and starting with that lord, one should proceed with the `daśā` calculation.
