मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-8, verse-318

राजभिः कृतदण्डास्तु कृत्वा पापानि मानवाः ।
निर्मलाः स्वर्गमायान्ति सन्तः सुकृतिनो यथा ॥३१८॥
318. rājabhiḥ kṛtadaṇḍāstu kṛtvā pāpāni mānavāḥ ,
nirmalāḥ svargamāyānti santaḥ sukṛtino yathā.

318. When people commit sins and are punished by kings, they become pure and attain heaven, just like virtuous people who have performed good deeds.
