मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-8, verse-285

वनस्पतीनां सर्वेषामुपभोगो यथा यथा ।
यथा तथा दमः कार्यो हिंसायामिति धारणा ॥२८५॥
285. vanaspatīnāṁ sarveṣāmupabhogo yathā yathā ,
yathā tathā damaḥ kāryo hiṁsāyāmiti dhāraṇā.

285. For all trees and plants, according to the extent of their usefulness, so too should the penalty be imposed for their injury. This is the established principle.
