मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-8, verse-286

मनुष्याणां पशूनां च दुःखाय प्रहृते सति ।
यथा यथा महद दुःखं दण्डं कुर्यात तथा तथा ॥२८६॥
286. manuṣyāṇāṁ paśūnāṁ ca duḥkhāya prahṛte sati ,
yathā yathā mahad duḥkhaṁ daṇḍaṁ kuryāt tathā tathā.

yathā mahat duḥkham daṇḍam kuryāt tathā tathā
286. manuṣyāṇām ca paśūnām duḥkhāya prahṛte sati yathā

286. When harm is inflicted upon humans or animals, causing suffering, punishment should be imposed in proportion to the severity of that suffering.
