मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-8, verse-212

धर्मार्थं येन दत्तं स्यात कस्मै चिद याचते धनम ।
पश्चाच्च न तथा तत स्यान्न देयं तस्य तद भवेत ॥२१२॥
212. dharmārthaṁ yena dattaṁ syāt kasmai cid yācate dhanam ,
paścācca na tathā tat syānna deyaṁ tasya tad bhavet.
212. dharma-artham yena dattam syāt kasmai cit ayācate dhanam
paścāt ca na tathā tat syāt na deyam tasya tat bhavet
212. yena kasmai cit ayācate dhanam dharma-artham dattam syāt
ca paścāt tat tathā na syāt tasya tat na deyam bhavet
212. If wealth is given to someone who has not solicited it, for the sake of religious merit (dharma), and subsequently that purpose (dharma) is not fulfilled, then that gift should not be considered as given to him.
