मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-3, verse-78

यस्मात त्रयोऽप्याश्रमिणो ज्ञानेनान्नेन चान्वहम ।
गृहस्थेनैव धार्यन्ते तस्माज ज्येष्ठाश्रमो गृही ॥७८॥
78. yasmāt trayo'pyāśramiṇo jñānenānnena cānvaham ,
gṛhasthenaiva dhāryante tasmāj jyeṣṭhāśramo gṛhī.

78. Because the three other stages of life (āśramas) are daily sustained by the householder (gṛhastha) through both knowledge and food, therefore the householder is the foremost (jyeṣṭha) among the stages of life.
