मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-3, verse-126

सत्क्रियां देशकालौ च शौचं ब्राह्मणसंपदः ।
पञ्चैतान विस्तरो हन्ति तस्मान्नैहेत विस्तरम ॥१२६॥
126. satkriyāṁ deśakālau ca śaucaṁ brāhmaṇasaṁpadaḥ ,
pañcaitān vistaro hanti tasmānnaiheta vistaram.
126. satkriyām deśakālau ca śaucam brāhmaṇasampadaḥ
pañca etān vistaraḥ hanti tasmāt na īheta vistaram
126. Extravagance ruins these five things: proper execution of rites, suitability of place and time, purity, and the qualities of the invited brahmins. Therefore, one should not strive for extravagance.
