मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-3, verse-136

अश्रोत्रियः पिता यस्य पुत्रः स्याद वेदपारगः ।
अश्रोत्रियो वा पुत्रः स्यात पिता स्याद वेदपारगः ॥१३६॥
136. aśrotriyaḥ pitā yasya putraḥ syād vedapāragaḥ ,
aśrotriyo vā putraḥ syāt pitā syād vedapāragaḥ.

aśrotriyaḥ vā putraḥ syāt pitā syāt vedapāragah
136. If one's father is not learned in the Vedas (aśrotriya), even if the son is learned in the Vedas (vedapāragah), he is considered not learned. Or, if the son is not learned, even if the father is learned, the son is considered not learned.
