The learned (vidvāṃsaḥ) are purified by patience (kṣāntyā), those who do wrong deeds (akāryakāriṇaḥ) by charity (dānena), those with hidden sins (pracchannapāpāḥ) by chanting (japyena), and the foremost knowers of the Vedas (vedavittamāḥ) by austerity (tapasā).
