मनु-स्मृतिः       manu-smṛtiḥ - chapter-5, verse-17

न भक्षयेदेकचरानज्ञातांश्च मृगद्विजान ।
भक्ष्येष्वपि समुद्दिष्टान सर्वान पञ्चनखांस्तथा ॥१७॥
17. na bhakṣayedekacarānajñātāṁśca mṛgadvijān ,
bhakṣyeṣvapi samuddiṣṭān sarvān pañcanakhāṁstathā.

bhakṣyeṣv api samuddīṣṭān sarvān pañcanakhāṁs tathā
17. na bhakṣayet ekacaran ajñātāṁś ca mṛgadvijān
bhakṣyeṣv api samuddīṣṭān sarvān pañcanakhāṁs tathā
17. One should not eat animals that live alone, unknown animals, wild animals, and birds. Likewise, all five-nailed animals that are specified as edible should also not be eaten.
