महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-7, chapter-165, verse-29

अहिंसा सर्वभूतेषु धर्मं ज्यायस्तरं विदुः ।
तस्य च ब्राह्मणो मूलं भवांश्च ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥२९॥
29. ahiṁsā sarvabhūteṣu dharmaṁ jyāyastaraṁ viduḥ ,
tasya ca brāhmaṇo mūlaṁ bhavāṁśca brahmavittamaḥ.
29. ahiṃsā sarvabhūteṣu dharmam jyāyastaram viduḥ
tasya ca brāhmaṇaḥ mūlam bhavān ca brahmavittamaḥ
29. sarvabhūteṣu ahiṃsā jyāyastaram dharmam viduḥ ca
brāhmaṇaḥ tasya mūlam ca bhavān brahmavittamaḥ
29. People consider non-violence (ahiṃsā) towards all beings to be a superior natural law (dharma). Moreover, a Brahmin is the very foundation of that (dharma), and you, sir, are the foremost among those who know brahman.
