महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-3, chapter-186, verse-5

चतुर्विधानि विप्रर्षे यथावत्परमेष्ठिना ।
वायुभूता दिशः कृत्वा विक्षिप्यापस्ततस्ततः ॥५॥
5. caturvidhāni viprarṣe yathāvatparameṣṭhinā ,
vāyubhūtā diśaḥ kṛtvā vikṣipyāpastatastataḥ.

vāyubhūtā diśaḥ kṛtvā vikṣipya āpaḥ tatas tataḥ
5. O wise sage, the Supreme Being, having made the directions take the form of air and having scattered waters everywhere, duly created the four kinds (of beings).
