मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-23, verse-67

श्राद्धे तु समनुप्राप्ते मध्यमं पिण्डमात्मना ।
भक्षयेथाः फणिश्रेष्ठ शुचिः प्रयतमानसः ॥६७॥
67. śrāddhe tu samanuprāpte madhyamaṃ piṇḍamātmanā .
bhakṣayethāḥ phaṇiśreṣṭha śuciḥ prayatamānasaḥ.

| bhakṣayethāḥ phaṇiśreṣṭha śuciḥ prayatamanāsaḥ
67. But, O best among serpents, when the śrāddha ritual arrives, you yourself (ātman) should eat the middle rice-ball (piṇḍa), being pure and with a controlled mind.
