महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-137, verse-28

पूजितस्यार्थमानाभ्यां जन्तोः पूर्वापकारिणः ।
चेतो भवत्यविश्वस्तं पूर्वं त्रासयते बलात् ॥२८॥
28. pūjitasyārthamānābhyāṁ jantoḥ pūrvāpakāriṇaḥ ,
ceto bhavatyaviśvastaṁ pūrvaṁ trāsayate balāt.

28. The mind of a person who was previously an offender (or enemy), even when honored with wealth and respect, becomes suspicious. This is because, in the past, it was accustomed to inspiring fear through force.
