महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-3, chapter-83, verse-71

गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्यं पृथिव्या जघनं स्मृतम् ।
प्रयागं जघनस्यान्तमुपस्थमृषयो विदुः ॥७१॥
71. gaṅgāyamunayormadhyaṁ pṛthivyā jaghanaṁ smṛtam ,
prayāgaṁ jaghanasyāntamupasthamṛṣayo viduḥ.
71. gaṅgāyamunayoḥ madhyam pṛthivyāḥ jaghanam smṛtam
prayāgam jaghanasya antam upastham ṛṣayaḥ viduḥ
71. The region between the Gaṅgā and Yamunā is remembered as the loins of the earth. The sages know Prayāga as the innermost part of those loins, the lap.
