मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
मार्तण्ड रस्यवेर्भार्या तनया विश्वकर्मणः ।
संज्ञा नाम महाभाग तस्यां भानुरजीजनत् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
mārtaṇḍa rasyaverbhāryā tanayā viśvakarmaṇaḥ .
saṃjñā nāma mahābhāga tasyāṃ bhānurajījanat.

viśvkarmaṇaḥ saṃjñā nāma mahābhāga tasyām bhānuḥ ajījanat
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: O highly revered one (mahābhāga)! Saṃjñā by name, the daughter of Viśvakarman, became the wife of Mārtaṇḍa (the Sun god); in her, Bhānu (another name for the Sun god) begot children.
मनुं प्रख्यातयशसमनेकज्ञानपारगम् ।
विवस्वतः सुतो यस्मात्तस्माद्वैवस्वतस्तु सः ॥२॥
2. manuṃ prakhyātayaśasamanekajñānapāragam .
vivasvataḥ suto yasmāttasmādvaivasvatastu saḥ.
2. manum prakhyātayaśasam anekajñānapāragam
vivasvataḥ sutaḥ yasmāt tasmāt vaivasvataḥ tu saḥ
2. Because he was the son of Vivasvat, he was indeed Vaivasvata, the well-known Manu, who had mastered many branches of knowledge.
संज्ञा च रविणा दृष्टा निमीलयति लोचने ।
यतस्ततः सरोषोर्ऽकः संज्ञां निष्ठुरमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. saṃjñā ca raviṇā dṛṣṭā nimīlayati locane .
yatastataḥ saroṣor'kaḥ saṃjñāṃ niṣṭhuramabravīt.
3. saṃjñā ca raviṇā dṛṣṭā nimīlayati locane yataḥ
tataḥ saroṣaḥ arkaḥ saṃjñām niṣṭhuram abravīt
3. And when Saṃjñā was seen by the Sun, she closed her eyes. Due to this, the Sun (Arka), filled with anger, spoke harshly to Saṃjñā.
मयि दृष्टे सदा यस्मात् कुरुषे नेत्रसंयमम् ।
तस्माज्जनिष्यसे मूढे प्रजासंयमनं यमम् ॥४॥
4. mayi dṛṣṭe sadā yasmāt kuruṣe netrasaṃyamam .
tasmājjaniṣyase mūḍhe prajāsaṃyamanaṃ yamam.
4. mayi dṛṣṭe sadā yasmāt kuruṣe netrasaṃyamam
tasmāt janiṣyase mūḍhe prajāsaṃyamanam yamam
4. Because you always close your eyes (netrasaṃyamam) when you see me, therefore, O foolish one, you will give birth to Yama, the one who restrains creatures (prajāsaṃyamanam).
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः सा चपलां दृष्टिं देवी चक्रे भयाकुला ।
विलोलितदृशं दृष्ट्वा पुनराह च तां रविः ॥५॥
5. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ sā capalāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ devī cakre bhayākulā .
vilolitadṛśaṃ dṛṣṭvā punarāha ca tāṃ raviḥ.
5. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ sā capalām dṛṣṭim devī cakre
bhayākulā vilolitadṛśam dṛṣṭvā punaḥ āha ca tām raviḥ
5. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, the goddess (devī), distressed by fear (bhayākulā), cast a restless (capalām) gaze (dṛṣṭim). And having seen her with darting eyes (vilolitadṛśam), the Sun (Ravi) spoke to her again.
यस्माद्विलोलिता दृष्टिर्मयि दृष्टे त्वयाधुना ।
तस्माद्विलोलां तनयां नदीं त्वं प्रसविष्यसि ॥६॥
6. yasmādvilolitā dṛṣṭirmayi dṛṣṭe tvayādhunā .
tasmādvilolāṃ tanayāṃ nadīṃ tvaṃ prasaviṣyasi.
6. yasmāt vilolitā dṛṣṭiḥ mayi dṛṣṭe tvayā adhunā
| tasmāt vilolām tanayām nadīm tvam prasaviṣyasi
6. Because your unsteady gaze fell upon me when I was seen by you just now, therefore, you will give birth to an unsteady daughter, a river.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तस्यान्तु संजज्ञे भर्तृशापेन तेन वै ।
यमश्च यमुना चेयं प्रख्याता सुमहानदी ॥७॥
7. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tatastasyāntu saṃjajñe bhartṛśāpena tena vai .
yamaśca yamunā ceyaṃ prakhyātā sumahānadī.
7. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | tataḥ tasyām tu saṃjajñe bhartṛśāpena
tena vai | yamaḥ ca yamunā ca iyam prakhyātā sumahānadī
7. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, indeed, from that curse of her husband, were born in her both Yama and this Yamunā, the renowned great river.
सापि संज्ञा रवेस्तेजः सेहे दुः खेन भामिनी ।
असहन्ती च सा तेजश्चिन्तयामास वै तदा ॥८॥
8. sāpi saṃjñā ravestejaḥ sehe duḥ khena bhāminī .
asahantī ca sā tejaścintayāmāsa vai tadā.
8. sā api saṃjñā raveḥ tejaḥ sehe duḥkhena bhāminī
| asahantī ca sā tejaḥ cintayāmāsa vai tadā
8. That Saṃjñā, the beautiful woman, endured the sun's brilliance with difficulty. And she, unable to bear that brilliance, then indeed began to ponder.
किङ्करोमि क्व गच्छामि क्व गतायाश्च निर्वृतिः ।
भवेन्मम कथं भर्ता कोपमर्कश्च नैष्यति ॥९॥
9. kiṅkaromi kva gacchāmi kva gatāyāśca nirvṛtiḥ .
bhavenmama kathaṃ bhartā kopamarkaśca naiṣyati.
9. kim karomi kva gacchāmi kva gatāyāḥ ca nirvṛtiḥ |
bhavet mama katham bhartā kopam arkaḥ ca na eṣyati
9. What shall I do? Where shall I go? And where would there be my peace if I were to leave? How can my husband, the Sun (arkaḥ), not become angry?
इति संचिन्त्य बहुधा प्रजापतिसुता तदा ।
बहु मेने महाभागा पितृसंश्रयमेव सा ॥१०॥
10. iti saṃcintya bahudhā prajāpatisutā tadā .
bahu mene mahābhāgā pitṛsaṃśrayameva sā.
10. iti saṃcintya bahudhā prajāpatisutā tadā
bahu mene mahābhāgā pitṛsaṃśrayam eva sā
10. Having pondered this in many ways, that greatly fortunate daughter of Prajāpati (Saṃjñā) then greatly valued taking refuge with her father.
ततः पितृगृहे गन्तुं कृतबुद्धिर्यशस्विनी ।
छायामयीमात्मतनुं निर्ममे दयितां रवेः ॥११॥
11. tataḥ pitṛgṛhe gantuṃ kṛtabuddhiryaśasvinī .
chāyāmayīmātmatanuṃ nirmame dayitāṃ raveḥ.
11. tataḥ pitṛgṛhe gantum kṛtabuddhiḥ yaśasvinī
chāyāmayīm ātmatanum nirmame dayitām raveḥ
11. Then, the famous Saṃjñā, having resolved to go to her father's house, created her own shadowy body, which was beloved by the Sun (Ravi).
ताञ्चोवाच त्वया वेश्मन्यत्र भानोर्यथा मया ।
तथा सम्यगपत्येषु वर्तितव्यं यथा रवौ ॥१२॥
12. tāñcovāca tvayā veśmanyatra bhānoryathā mayā .
tathā samyagapatyeṣu vartitavyaṃ yathā ravau.
12. tām ca uvāca tvayā veśmani atra bhānoḥ yathā mayā
tathā samyak apatyeṣu vartitavyam yathā ravau
12. And she said to her: 'Here, in the Sun's house, you must behave properly towards the children, just as I would, and likewise towards the Sun.'
पृष्टयापि न वाच्यन्ते तथैतद्गमनं मम ।
सैवास्मि नाम संज्ञेति वाच्यमेतत्सदा वचः ॥१३॥
13. pṛṣṭayāpi na vācyante tathaitadgamanaṃ mama .
saivāsmi nāma saṃjñeti vācyametatsadā vacaḥ.
13. pṛṣṭayā api na vācyante tathā etat gamanam mama sā
eva asmi nāma saṃjñā iti vācyam etat sadā vacaḥ
13. Even if questioned, you must not reveal this departure of mine. Instead, this statement - 'Indeed, I am Saṃjñā by name' - must always be said.
छायसंज्ञोवाच ।
आकेशग्रहणाद् देवि आशापाच्च वचस्तव ।
करिष्ये कथयिष्यामि वृत्तन्तु शापकर्षणात् ॥१४॥
14. chāyasaṃjñovāca .
ākeśagrahaṇād devi āśāpācca vacastava .
kariṣye kathayiṣyāmi vṛttantu śāpakarṣaṇāt.
14. chāyasaṃjñaḥ uvāca | ākeśagrahaṇāt devi āśāpāt ca vacaḥ
tava | kariṣye kathayiṣyāmi vṛttam tu śāpakarṣaṇāt
14. Chaya said: "O Goddess, regarding your words concerning the seizing of my hair and the curse (āśāpa), I will comply. And I will narrate the account (vṛtta) of the curse's alleviation."
इत्युक्ता सा तदा देवी जगाम भवनं पितुः ।
ददर्श तत्र त्वष्टारं तपसा धूतकल्मषम् ॥१५॥
15. ityuktā sā tadā devī jagāma bhavanaṃ pituḥ .
dadarśa tatra tvaṣṭāraṃ tapasā dhūtakalmaṣam.
15. iti uktā sā tadā devī jagāma bhavanam pituḥ |
dadarśa tatra tvaṣṭāram tapasā dhūtakalmaṣam
15. Thus addressed, the goddess then went to her father's house. There she saw Tvashtar, who had removed all impurities (kalmaṣa) through his severe austerities (tapas).
बहुमानाच्च तेनापि पूजिता विश्वकर्मणा ।
तस्थौ पितृगृहे सा तु कञ्चित्कालमनिन्दिता ॥१६॥
16. bahumānācca tenāpi pūjitā viśvakarmaṇā .
tasthau pitṛgṛhe sā tu kañcitkālamaninditā.
16. bahumānāt ca tena api pūjitā viśvakarmaṇā |
tasthau pitṛgṛhe sā tu kañcit kālam aninditā
16. And she, the blameless one, honored with great respect by him, Viśvakarman, stayed in her father's house for some time.
ततस्तां प्राह चार्वङ्गी पिता नातिचिरोषिताम् ।
स्तुत्वा च तनयां प्रेमबहुमानपुरः सरम् ॥१७॥
17. tatastāṃ prāha cārvaṅgī pitā nāticiroṣitām .
stutvā ca tanayāṃ premabahumānapuraḥ saram.
17. tataḥ tām prāha cārvāṅgīm pitā na ati cira uṣitām
| stutvā ca tanayām premabahumānapuraḥsaram
17. Then, her father, having praised his beautiful-limbed daughter – who had not stayed there for very long – with love and great respect, spoke to her.
त्वान्तु मे पश्यतो वत्से दिनानि सुबहून्यपि ।
मुहूर्तार्धसमानि स्युः किन्तु धर्मो विलुप्यते ॥१८॥
18. tvāntu me paśyato vatse dināni subahūnyapi .
muhūrtārdhasamāni syuḥ kintu dharmo vilupyate.
18. tvām tu me paśyataḥ vatse dināni su-bahūni api
muhūrta-ardha-samāni syuḥ kintu dharmaḥ vilupyate
18. Oh dear daughter, for me, even many days spent gazing upon you would pass as if they were merely half a moment. However, (your) intrinsic duty (dharma) is being neglected.
बान्धवेषु चिरं वासो नारीणां न यशस्करः ।
मनोरथो बान्धवानां नार्या भर्तृगृहे स्थितिः ॥१९॥
19. bāndhaveṣu ciraṃ vāso nārīṇāṃ na yaśaskaraḥ .
manoratho bāndhavānāṃ nāryā bhartṛgṛhe sthitiḥ.
19. bāndhaveṣu ciram vāsaḥ nārīṇām na yaśaskaraḥ
manorathaḥ bāndhavānām naryā bhartṛ-gṛhe sthitiḥ
19. A prolonged residence among relatives does not bring honor to women. The desire of the relatives is for a woman to be situated in her husband's home.
सा त्वं त्रैलोक्यनाथेन भर्त्रा सूर्येण सङ्गता ।
पितृगेहे चिरं कालं वस्तुं नार्हसि पुत्रिके ॥२०॥
20. sā tvaṃ trailokyanāthena bhartrā sūryeṇa saṅgatā .
pitṛgehe ciraṃ kālaṃ vastuṃ nārhasi putrike.
20. sā tvam trailokya-nāthena bhartrā sūryeṇa saṅgatā
pitṛ-gehe ciram kālam vastum na arhasi putrike
20. Therefore you, oh dear daughter, united with your husband Sūrya, the lord of the three worlds, should not remain for a long time in your father's house.
सा त्वं भर्तृगृहं गच्छ तुष्टोऽहं पूजितासि मे ।
पुनरागमनं कार्यं दर्शनाय शुभे मम ॥२१॥
21. sā tvaṃ bhartṛgṛhaṃ gaccha tuṣṭo'haṃ pūjitāsi me .
punarāgamanaṃ kāryaṃ darśanāya śubhe mama.
21. sā tvam bhartṛ-gṛham gaccha tuṣṭaḥ aham pūjitā
asi me punaḥ-āgamanam kāryam darśanāya śubhe mama
21. Therefore, you, oh auspicious one, go to your husband's house. I am pleased, for you have been honored by me. A return visit should be made for my sight.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्ता सा तदा पित्रा तथेत्युक्त्वा च सा मुने ।
संपूजयित्वा पितरं जगामाथोत्तरान् कुरून् ॥२२॥
22. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityuktā sā tadā pitrā tathetyuktvā ca sā mune .
saṃpūjayitvā pitaraṃ jagāmāthottarān kurūn.
22. Mārkaṇḍeya uvāca iti uktā sā tadā pitrā tathā iti uktvā
ca sā mune saṃpūjayitvā pitaraṃ jagāma atha uttarān kurūn
22. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "O sage, when her father spoke thus to her, she replied, 'So be it.' Then, having honored her father, she departed for the northern Kurus."
सूर्यतापमनिच्छन्ती तेजसस्तस्य बिभ्यती ।
तपश्चचार तत्रापि वडवारूपधारिणी ॥२३॥
23. sūryatāpamanicchantī tejasastasya bibhyatī .
tapaścacāra tatrāpi vaḍavārūpadhāriṇī.
23. sūryatāpam anicchantī tejasaḥ tasya bibhyatī
tapaḥ cacāra tatra api vaḍavārūpadhāriṇī
23. Not desiring the sun's heat and fearing his radiance, she performed severe austerities (tapas) there as well, having taken on the form of a mare.
संज्ञेयमिति मन्वानो द्वितीयायामहस्पतिः ।
जनयामास तनयौ कन्याञ्चैकां मनोरमाम् ॥२४॥
24. saṃjñeyamiti manvāno dvitīyāyāmahaspatiḥ .
janayāmāsa tanayau kanyāñcaikāṃ manoramām.
24. saṃjñā iyam iti manvānaḥ dvitīyāyām ahaspatiḥ
janayām āsa tanayau kanyām ca ekām manoramām
24. Believing her to be Saṃjñā, the Sun (ahaspati) begot two sons and one charming daughter from the second woman (Chāyā).
छायासंज्ञा त्वपत्येषु यथा स्वेष्वतिवत्सला ।
तथा न संज्ञाकन्यायां पुत्रयोश्चान्ववर्तत ॥२५॥
25. chāyāsaṃjñā tvapatyeṣu yathā sveṣvativatsalā .
tathā na saṃjñākanyāyāṃ putrayoścānvavartata.
25. chāyāsaṃjñā tu apatyeṣu yathā sveṣu ativatsalā
tathā na saṃjñākanyāyām putrayoḥ ca anvavartata
25. Chāyā, who was impersonating Saṃjñā, was very affectionate towards her own children, but she did not show the same affection towards Saṃjñā's daughter or her two sons.
लालनाद्युपभोगेषु विशेषमनुवासरम् ।
मनुस्तत् क्षान्तवानस्य यमस्तस्या न चक्षमे ॥२६॥
26. lālanādyupabhogeṣu viśeṣamanuvāsaram .
manustat kṣāntavānasya yamastasyā na cakṣame.
26. lālanādi upabhogeṣu viśeṣam anuvāsaram manuḥ
tat kṣāntavān asya yamaḥ tasyāḥ na cakṣame
26. Manu, day after day, tolerated her particular excessive indulgence in caressing and other enjoyments. However, Yama did not forgive her.
ताडनाय च वै कोपात् पादस्तेन समुद्यतः ।
तस्याः पुनः क्षान्तिमता न तु देहे निपातितः ॥२७॥
27. tāḍanāya ca vai kopāt pādastena samudyataḥ .
tasyāḥ punaḥ kṣāntimatā na tu dehe nipātitaḥ.
27. tāḍanāya ca vai kopāt pādaḥ tena samudyataḥ
tasyāḥ punaḥ kṣāntimatā na tu dehe nipātitaḥ
27. Indeed, in anger, he raised a foot to strike her. But, being (inherently) patient, he did not bring it down upon her body.
ततः शशाप तं कोपाच्छायासंज्ञा यमं द्विज ।
किञ्चित् प्रस्फुरमाणौष्ठी विचलत्पाणिपल्लवा ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ śaśāpa taṃ kopācchāyāsaṃjñā yamaṃ dvija .
kiñcit prasphuramāṇauṣṭhī vicalatpāṇipallavā.
28. tataḥ śaśāpa tam kopāt chāyāsaṃjñā yamam dvija
kiñcit prasphuramāṇauṣṭhī vicalatpāṇipallavā
28. Then, O twice-born (dvija), Chhaya-Saṃjñā, with slightly trembling lips and quivering sprout-like hands, cursed Yama out of anger.
पितुः पत्नीममर्यादं यन्मां तर्जयसे पदा ।
भुवि तस्मादयं पदास्तवाद्यैव पतिष्यति ॥२९॥
29. pituḥ patnīmamaryādaṃ yanmāṃ tarjayase padā .
bhuvi tasmādayaṃ padāstavādyaiva patiṣyati.
29. pituḥ patnīm amaryādam yat mām tarjayase padā
bhuvi tasmāt ayam pādaḥ tava adya eva patiṣyati
29. Because you threaten me, your father's wife, disrespectfully with your foot, therefore this very foot of yours will fall to the ground today!
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्याकर्ण्य यमः शापं मात्रा दत्तं भयातुरः ।
अभ्येत्य पितरं प्राह प्रणिपातपुरः सरम् ॥३०॥
30. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityākarṇya yamaḥ śāpaṃ mātrā dattaṃ bhayāturaḥ .
abhyetya pitaraṃ prāha praṇipātapuraḥ saram.
30. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti ākarṇya yamaḥ śāpam mātrā dattam
bhayāturaḥ abhyetya pitaram prāha praṇipātapuraḥsaram
30. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having heard this curse given by his mother, Yama, distressed with fear, approached his father and spoke, preceded by a prostration.
यम उवाच ।
तातैतन्महदाश्चर्यं न दृष्टमिति केनचित् ।
माता वात्सल्यमुत्सृज्य शापं पुत्रे प्रयच्छति ॥३१॥
31. yama uvāca .
tātaitanmahadāścaryaṃ na dṛṣṭamiti kenacit .
mātā vātsalyamutsṛjya śāpaṃ putre prayacchati.
31. yamaḥ uvāca tāta etat mahat āścaryam na dṛṣṭam iti
kenacit mātā vātsalyam utsṛjya śāpam putre prayacchati
31. Yama said: "Father, this is a great wonder (āścarya), not seen by anyone. A mother abandons her affection and bestows a curse upon her son!"
यथा मनुर्ममाचष्टे नेयं मता तथा मम ।
विगुणेष्वपि पुत्रेषु न माता विगुणा भवेत् ॥३२॥
32. yathā manurmamācaṣṭe neyaṃ matā tathā mama .
viguṇeṣvapi putreṣu na mātā viguṇā bhavet.
32. yathā manuḥ mama ācaṣṭe na iyam matā tathā mama
viguṇeṣu api putreṣu na mātā viguṇā bhavet
32. "Just as Manu declares, this is not my opinion (mata). A mother would not be flawed even towards sons who are flawed."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
यमस्यैतद्वचः श्रुत्वा भगवांस्तिमिरापहः ।
छायासंज्ञां समाहूय पप्रच्छ क्व गतेति सा ॥३३॥
33. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
yamasyaitadvacaḥ śrutvā bhagavāṃstimirāpahaḥ .
chāyāsaṃjñāṃ samāhūya papraccha kva gateti sā.
33. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca yamasya etat vacaḥ śrutvā bhagavān
timirāpahaḥ chāyāsaṃjñām samāhūya papraccha kva gatā iti sā
33. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having heard these words (vacas) of Yama, the venerable dispeller of darkness (referring to the Sun god, father of Yama), summoned Chāyā-Saṃjñā and asked, "Where has she gone?"
सा चाह तनया त्वष्टुरहं संज्ञा विभावसो ।
पत्नी तव त्वयापत्यान्येतानि जनितानि मे ॥३४॥
34. sā cāha tanayā tvaṣṭurahaṃ saṃjñā vibhāvaso .
patnī tava tvayāpatyānyetāni janitāni me.
34. sā ca āha tanayā tvaṣṭuḥ aham saṃjñā vibhāvaso
patnī tava tvayā apatyāni etāni janitāni me
34. And she said, 'I am Saṃjñā, the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ, and your wife, O son of Vibhāvasu (Sūrya). These children have been begotten by you through me.'
इत्थं विवस्वतः सा तु बहुशः पृच्छतो यदा ।
नाचचक्षे ततः क्रुद्धो भास्वांस्तां शप्तुमुद्यतः ॥३५॥
35. itthaṃ vivasvataḥ sā tu bahuśaḥ pṛcchato yadā .
nācacakṣe tataḥ kruddho bhāsvāṃstāṃ śaptumudyataḥ.
35. ittham vivasvataḥ sā tu bahuśaḥ pṛcchataḥ yadā na
ācacakshe tataḥ kruddhaḥ bhāsvān tām śaptum udyataḥ
35. When she did not reveal the truth, even after Vivasvat (Sūrya) questioned her repeatedly, then the luminous one (Sūrya) became enraged and was about to curse her.
ततः सा कथयामास यथावृत्तं विवस्वतः ।
विदितार्थश्च भगवान् जगाम त्वष्टुरालयम् ॥३६॥
36. tataḥ sā kathayāmāsa yathāvṛttaṃ vivasvataḥ .
viditārthaśca bhagavān jagāma tvaṣṭurālayam.
36. tataḥ sā kathayāmāsa yathāvṛttam vivasvataḥ
viditārthaḥ ca bhagavān jagāma tvaṣṭuḥ ālayam
36. Then she narrated to Vivasvat (Sūrya) the actual state of affairs. And the divine one (Sūrya), having understood the situation, went to Tvaṣṭṛ's abode.
ततः स पूजयामास तदा त्रैलोक्यपूजितम् ।
भास्वन्तं परया भक्त्या निजगेहमुपागतम् ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ sa pūjayāmāsa tadā trailokyapūjitam .
bhāsvantaṃ parayā bhaktyā nijagehamupāgatam.

37. Then he (Tvaṣṭṛ) worshipped the luminous one (Sūrya), who is revered by the three worlds and had arrived at his own abode, with supreme devotion (bhakti).
संज्ञां पृष्टस्तदा तस्मै कथयामास विश्वकृत् ।
आगतैवेह मे वेश्म भवतः प्रेषितेति वै ॥३८॥
38. saṃjñāṃ pṛṣṭastadā tasmai kathayāmāsa viśvakṛt .
āgataiveha me veśma bhavataḥ preṣiteti vai.

āgata eva iha me veśma bhavataḥ preṣitā iti vai
38. When asked about Saṃjñā, Viśvakṛt, the creator of the universe, then informed him (the Sun god), "Indeed, she has arrived here at my abode, having been sent by you."
दिवाकरः समाधिस्थो वडवारूपधारिणीम् ।
तपश्चरन्तीं ददृशे उत्तरेषु कुरुष्वथ ॥३९॥
39. divākaraḥ samādhistho vaḍavārūpadhāriṇīm .
tapaścarantīṃ dadṛśe uttareṣu kuruṣvatha.

tapaḥ carantīm dadṛśe uttareṣu kuruṣu atha
39. Then the Sun god, who was absorbed in deep meditation (dhyāna), saw her in the northern Kuru region practicing severe austerity (tapas) while having assumed the form of a mare.
सौम्यमूर्तिः शुभाकारो मम भर्ता भवेदिति ।
अभिसन्धिञ्च तपसो बुबुधेऽस्या दिवाकरः ॥४०॥
40. saumyamūrtiḥ śubhākāro mama bhartā bhavediti .
abhisandhiñca tapaso bubudhe'syā divākaraḥ.
40. saumyāmūrtiḥ śubhākāraḥ mama bhartā bhavet iti
abhisaṃdhim ca tapasaḥ bubudhe asyāḥ divākaraḥ
40. The Sun god (Divākara) understood her (Saṃjñā's) intention (abhisaṃdhi) in performing this austerity (tapas), which was, "May my husband have a gentle and auspicious form."
शातनं तेजसो मेऽद्य क्रियतामिति भास्करः ।
तञ्चाह विश्वकर्माणं संज्ञायाः पितरं द्विज ॥४१॥
41. śātanaṃ tejaso me'dya kriyatāmiti bhāskaraḥ .
tañcāha viśvakarmāṇaṃ saṃjñāyāḥ pitaraṃ dvija.
41. śātanam tejasaḥ me adya kriyatām iti bhāskaraḥ
tam ca āha viśvakarmāṇam saṃjñāyāḥ pitaram dvija
41. The Sun god (Bhāskara) then said to Viśvakarmā, who was Saṃjñā's father, "Let the diminishing of my brilliance (tejas) be carried out today, O twice-born (dvija)!"
संवत्सरभ्रमेस्तस्य विश्वकर्मा करवेस्ततः ।
तेजसः शातनञ्चक्रे स्तूयमानश्च दैवतैः ॥४२॥
42. saṃvatsarabhramestasya viśvakarmā karavestataḥ .
tejasaḥ śātanañcakre stūyamānaśca daivataiḥ.
42. saṃvatsarabhrameḥ tasya viśvakarmā karaveḥ tataḥ
tejasaḥ śātanam ca cakre stūyamānaḥ daivataiḥ
42. Then, as he was being praised by the deities, Viśvakarman reduced the splendor of the sun (karava) during its annual revolution.
