पुत्र उवाच ।
अहं वैश्यकुले जातो जन्मन्यस्मात्तु सप्तमे ।
समतीते गवां रोधं निपाने कृतवान् पुरा ॥१॥
1. putra uvāca .
ahaṃ vaiśyakule jāto janmanyasmāttu saptame .
samatīte gavāṃ rodhaṃ nipāne kṛtavān purā.
1. putraḥ uvāca | aham vaiśya-kule jātaḥ janmani asmāt tu
saptame | sam-atīte gavām rodham nipāne kṛtavān purā
1. The son said: 'I was born into a merchant (vaiśya) family. In my seventh lifetime (janman) from this one, I once imprisoned cows at a watering place.'
विपाकात् कर्मणस्तस्य नरकं भृशदारुणम् ।
सम्प्राप्तोऽग्निशिखाघोरमयोमुखखगाकुलम् ॥२॥
2. vipākāt karmaṇastasya narakaṃ bhṛśadāruṇam .
samprāpto'gniśikhāghoramayomukhakhagākulam.
2. vipākāt karmaṇaḥ tasya narakam bhṛśa-dāruṇam |
sam-prāptaḥ agni-śikhā-ghoram ayaḥ-mukha-khaga-ākulam
2. Due to the fruition of that action (karma), I reached hell (naraka), which was exceedingly dreadful, terrifying with its fiery flames, and filled with iron-beaked birds.
यन्त्रपीडनगात्रासृक्-प्रवाहोद्भूतकर्दमम् ।
विशस्यमानदुष्कर्मि-तन्निपातरवाकुलम् ॥३॥
3. yantrapīḍanagātrāsṛk-pravāhodbhūtakardamam .
viśasyamānaduṣkarmi-tannipātaravākulam.

3. Where mud was generated from the flowing blood of bodies crushed by machines, and which was agitated by the sounds of evil-doers being slaughtered and falling.
पात्यमानस्य मे तत्र साग्रं वर्षशतं गतम् ।
महातापार्तितप्तस्य तृष्णादाहान्वितस्य च ॥४॥
4. pātyamānasya me tatra sāgraṃ varṣaśataṃ gatam .
mahātāpārtitaptasya tṛṣṇādāhānvitasya ca.
4. pātyamānasya me tatra sāgram varṣaśatam gatam
mahātāpārtitaptasya tṛṣṇādāhānvitasya ca
4. While I was being cast down there, more than a hundred years passed for me, who was scorched by great anguish and afflicted by the burning of thirst.
तत्राह्लादकरः सद्यः पवनः सुखशीतलः ।
करम्भ-बालुकाकुम्भ-मध्यस्थो मे समागतः ॥५॥
5. tatrāhlādakaraḥ sadyaḥ pavanaḥ sukhaśītalaḥ .
karambha-bālukākumbha-madhyastho me samāgataḥ.
5. tatra āhlādakaraḥ sadyaḥ pavanaḥ sukhaśītalaḥ
karambhabālukākumbhamadhyasthaḥ me samāgataḥ
5. There, a delightfully cool wind, immediately bringing joy, came to me; it had been placed inside a pot containing gravel and sand.
तत्सम्पर्कादशेषाणां नाभवद्यातना नृणाम् ।
मम चापि यथा स्वर्गे स्वर्गिणां निर्वृतिः परा ॥६॥
6. tatsamparkādaśeṣāṇāṃ nābhavadyātanā nṛṇām .
mama cāpi yathā svarge svargiṇāṃ nirvṛtiḥ parā.
6. tatsamparkāt aśeṣāṇām na abhavat yātanā nṛṇām
mama ca api yathā svarge svargiṇām nirvṛtiḥ parā
6. From contact with that (wind), the torment of all those people vanished. And for me, too, there was supreme happiness (nirvṛti), just as the dwellers of heaven experience in heaven.
किमेतदिति चाह्लाद-विस्तारस्तिमितेक्षणैः ।
दृष्टमस्माभिरासन्नं नररत्नमनत्तमम् ॥७॥
7. kimetaditi cāhlāda-vistārastimitekṣaṇaiḥ .
dṛṣṭamasmābhirāsannaṃ nararatnamanattamam.
7. kim etat iti ca āhlāda-vistāra-stimita-īkṣaṇaiḥ
dṛṣṭam asmābhiḥ āsannam nara-ratnam anuttamam
7. “What is this?” – with this thought, and with eyes wide and unmoving due to expanding delight, an unparalleled jewel among men (puruṣa-ratna) was seen by us, approaching near.
याम्यश्च पुरुषो घोरो दण्डहस्तोऽशनिप्रभः ।
पुरतो दर्शयन् मार्गमिति एहीति वगथ ॥८॥
8. yāmyaśca puruṣo ghoro daṇḍahasto'śaniprabhaḥ .
purato darśayan mārgamiti ehīti vagatha.
8. yāmyaḥ ca puruṣaḥ ghoraḥ daṇḍa-hastaḥ aśani-prabhaḥ
purataḥ darśayan mārgam iti ehi iti vagat
8. And a terrible being (puruṣa) of Yama, holding a staff and radiant like a thunderbolt, showed the path ahead, saying, "Come!".
पुरुषः स तदा दृष्ट्वा यातनाशतसंकुलम् ।
नरकं प्राह तं याम्यं किङ्करं कृपयान्वितः ॥९॥
9. puruṣaḥ sa tadā dṛṣṭvā yātanāśatasaṃkulam .
narakaṃ prāha taṃ yāmyaṃ kiṅkaraṃ kṛpayānvitaḥ.
9. puruṣaḥ sa tadā dṛṣṭvā yātanā-śata-saṅkulam
narakam prāha tam yāmyam kiṅkaram kṛpayā-anvitaḥ
9. Then, that man (puruṣa), filled with compassion, after seeing hell crowded with hundreds of tortures, spoke to that attendant of Yama.
पुरुष उवाच ।
भो याम्यपुरुषाचक्ष्व किं मया दुष्कृतं कृतम् ।
येनेदं यातनाभीम् प्राप्तोऽस्मि नरकं परम् ॥१०॥
10. puruṣa uvāca .
bho yāmyapuruṣācakṣva kiṃ mayā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam .
yenedaṃ yātanābhīm prāpto'smi narakaṃ param.
10. puruṣaḥ uvāca bho yāmya-puruṣa ācakṣva kim mayā duṣkṛtam
kṛtam yena idam yātanā-bhīmam prāptaḥ asmi narakam param
10. The man (puruṣa) said: "O attendant (puruṣa) of Yama, please tell me what evil deed I have committed, by which I have arrived at this terrible hell of torments."
विपश्चिदिति विख्यातो जनकानामहं कुले ।
जातो विदेहविषये सम्यङ्मनुजपालकः ॥११॥
11. vipaściditi vikhyāto janakānāmahaṃ kule .
jāto videhaviṣaye samyaṅmanujapālakaḥ.
11. vipascit iti vikhyātaḥ janakānām aham kule
jātaḥ videhaviṣaye samyak manujapālakaḥ
11. I am renowned as Vipashcit, having been born in the family of the Janakas in the Videha region, and I am truly a protector of mankind.
यज्ञैर्मयेष्टं बहुभिर्धर्मतः पालिता मही ।
नोत्सृष्टश्चैव संग्रामो नातिथिर्विमुखो गतः ॥१२॥
12. yajñairmayeṣṭaṃ bahubhirdharmataḥ pālitā mahī .
notsṛṣṭaścaiva saṃgrāmo nātithirvimukho gataḥ.
12. yajñaiḥ mayā iṣṭam bahubhiḥ dharmataḥ pālitā mahī na
utsṛṣṭaḥ ca eva saṃgrāmaḥ na atithiḥ vimukhaḥ gataḥ
12. Many Vedic rituals (yajña) have been performed by me, and the earth has been protected in accordance with natural law (dharma). No battle has ever been abandoned, nor has any guest ever been turned away disappointed.
पितृ-देवर्षि-भृत्याश्च न चापचरिता मया ।
कृता स्पृहा च न मया परस्त्रीविभवादिषु ॥१३॥
13. pitṛ-devarṣi-bhṛtyāśca na cāpacaritā mayā .
kṛtā spṛhā ca na mayā parastrīvibhavādiṣu.
13. pitṛ-devarṣi-bhṛtyāḥ ca na ca apacaritā mayā
kṛtā spṛhā ca na mayā para-strī-vibhavādiṣu
13. My ancestors, gods, sages, and servants were not neglected by me. Nor have I ever harbored desire (spṛhā) for others' wives, wealth, or other possessions.
पर्वकालेषु पितरस्तिथिकालेषु देवताः ।
पुरुषं स्वयमायान्ति निपानमिव धेनवः ॥१४॥
14. parvakāleṣu pitarastithikāleṣu devatāḥ .
puruṣaṃ svayamāyānti nipānamiva dhenavaḥ.
14. parvakāleṣu pitaraḥ tithi-kāleṣu devatāḥ
puruṣam svayam āyānti nipānam iva dhenavaḥ
14. During auspicious times, the ancestors, and during lunar dates (tithi), the deities, spontaneously approach an individual (puruṣa), just as cows come to a watering hole.
यतस्ते विमुखा यान्ति निश्वस्य गृहमेधिनः ।
तस्मादिष्टश्च पूर्तश्च धमौ द्वावपि नश्यतः ॥१५॥
15. yataste vimukhā yānti niśvasya gṛhamedhinaḥ .
tasmādiṣṭaśca pūrtaśca dhamau dvāvapi naśyataḥ.
15. yataḥ te vimukhāḥ yānti niśvasya gṛhamedhinaḥ
tasmāt iṣṭaḥ ca pūrtaḥ ca dharmau dvau api naśyataḥ
15. Because those householders, sighing, turn away (from their duties), both their performed sacrificial acts (iṣṭa) and public welfare deeds (pūrta) - these two forms of virtuous action (dharma) - are destroyed.
पितृनिश्वासविध्वस्तं सप्तजन्मार्जितं शुभम् ।
त्रिजन्मप्रभवं दैवो निश्वासो हन्त्यसंशयम् ॥१६॥
16. pitṛniśvāsavidhvastaṃ saptajanmārjitaṃ śubham .
trijanmaprabhavaṃ daivo niśvāso hantyasaṃśayam.
16. pitṛ-niśvāsa-vidhvastaṃ sapta-janma-ārjitaṃ śubham
tri-janma-prabhavaṃ daivaḥ niśvāsaḥ hanti asaṃśayam
16. Without a doubt, a divine sigh destroys the merit (śubham) that was accumulated over seven lives, and which was (already) ruined by the sigh of ancestors, as well as the merit originating from three births.
तस्माद् दैवे च पित्र्ये च नित्यमेवोद्यतोऽभवम् ।
सोऽहं कथमिमं प्राप्तो नरङ्क भृशदारुणम् ॥१७॥
17. tasmād daive ca pitrye ca nityamevodyato'bhavam .
so'haṃ kathamimaṃ prāpto naraṅka bhṛśadāruṇam.
17. tasmāt daive ca pitrye ca nityam eva udyataḥ abhavam
saḥ aham katham imam prāptaḥ narakam bhṛśa-dāruṇam
17. Therefore, I was always diligent in both my duties to the deities and to the ancestors. How then did I, such a person, come to this exceedingly dreadful hell?
