मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
वीर्यचन्द्रसुता सुभूर्वीरा नाम शुभव्रता ।
स्वयंवरे सा जगृहे महाराजं करन्धमम् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
vīryacandrasutā subhūrvīrā nāma śubhavratā .
svayaṃvare sā jagṛhe mahārājaṃ karandhamam.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca vīryacandrasutā subhūḥ vīrā nāma
śubhavratā svayaṃvare sā jagṛhe mahārājam karandhamam
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Vīrā, the beautiful daughter of Vīryacandra, who was known for her auspicious vows, chose the great king Karandhama in her self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara).
तस्यां पुत्रं स राजेन्द्रो जनयामास वीर्यवान् ।
अविक्षितमिति ख्यातिमुपेतं जगतीतले ॥२॥
2. tasyāṃ putraṃ sa rājendro janayāmāsa vīryavān .
avikṣitamiti khyātimupetaṃ jagatītale.
2. tasyām putram saḥ rājendraḥ janayāmāsa vīryavān
avikṣitam iti khyātim upetam jagatītale
2. That valiant supreme king (Karandhama) begot a son in her (Vīrā), who became known by the name Avikṣit throughout the world.
जाते तस्मिन्सुते राजा स दैवज्ञानपृच्छत ।
कच्चित्प्रशस्तनक्षत्रे शस्तलग्ने सुतो मम ॥३॥
3. jāte tasminsute rājā sa daivajñānapṛcchata .
kaccitpraśastanakṣatre śastalagne suto mama.
3. jāte tasmin sute rājā saḥ daivajñān apṛcchata
kaccit praśasta-nakṣatre śasta-lagne sutaḥ mama
3. When that son was born, the king himself asked the astrologers, "I hope my son was born under an auspicious constellation and in a favorable ascendant."
कच्चिच्चालोकितं जन्म मम पुत्रस्य शोभनैः ।
ग्रहैः कच्चिन्न दुष्टानां ग्रहाणां दृक्पथं गतम् ॥४॥
4. kacciccālokitaṃ janma mama putrasya śobhanaiḥ .
grahaiḥ kaccinna duṣṭānāṃ grahāṇāṃ dṛkpathaṃ gatam.
4. kaccit ca ālokitam janma mama putrasya śobhanaiḥ
grahaiḥ kaccit na duṣṭānām grahāṇām dṛkpatham gatam
4. Has the birth of my son been auspiciously observed by benevolent planets? And has it not fallen within the sight of malevolent planets?
इत्युक्तास्तेन दैवज्ञास्तमूचुर्नृपतिं ततः ।
शस्ते मुहूर्ते नक्षत्रे लग्ने चैव सुतस्तव ॥५॥
5. ityuktāstena daivajñāstamūcurnṛpatiṃ tataḥ .
śaste muhūrte nakṣatre lagne caiva sutastava.
5. iti uktāḥ tena daivajñāḥ tam ūcuḥ nṛpatim tataḥ
śaste muhūrte nakṣatre lagne ca eva sutaḥ tava
5. Thus addressed by him, the astrologers then said to the king, "Your son was born in an auspicious moment, constellation, and lagna (ascendant)."
समुत्पन्नो महावीर्यो महाभागो महाबलः ।
भविष्यति महाराज महाराजस्तवात्मजः ॥६॥
6. samutpanno mahāvīryo mahābhāgo mahābalaḥ .
bhaviṣyati mahārāja mahārājastavātmajaḥ.
6. samutpannaḥ mahāvīryaḥ mahābhāgaḥ mahābalaḥ
bhaviṣyati mahārāja mahārājaḥ tava ātmajaḥ
6. O great king, your son was born extremely valiant, greatly fortunate, and immensely powerful; he will certainly become a great king.
अवैक्षतेमं देवानां गुरुः शुक्रश्च सप्तमः ।
सोमश्चतुर्थस्तनयं तवैनं समवैक्षत ॥७॥
7. avaikṣatemaṃ devānāṃ guruḥ śukraśca saptamaḥ .
somaścaturthastanayaṃ tavainaṃ samavaikṣata.
7. avaikṣata imam devānām guruḥ śukraḥ ca saptamaḥ
somaḥ caturthaḥ tanayam tava enam samavaikṣata
7. Jupiter, the preceptor of the gods, and Venus observed him from the seventh house. The Moon, in the fourth house, also fully observed this son of yours.
उपान्तसंस्थितश्चैव सोमपुत्रोप्यवैक्षत ।
नावैक्षतेमं सविता न भौमो न शनैश्चरः ॥८॥
8. upāntasaṃsthitaścaiva somaputropyavaikṣata .
nāvaikṣatemaṃ savitā na bhaumo na śanaiścaraḥ.
8. upāntasaṃsthitaḥ ca eva somaputraḥ api avaikṣata
na avaikṣata imam savitā na bhaumaḥ na śanaiścaraḥ
8. Mercury (Somaputra) was also situated nearby and gazed upon him. However, the Sun (Savitā), Mars (Bhauma), and Saturn (Śanaiścara) did not gaze upon him.
तव पुत्रं महाराज धन्योऽयं तनयस्तव ।
सर्वकल्याणसम्पत्ति समवेतो भविष्यति ॥९॥
9. tava putraṃ mahārāja dhanyo'yaṃ tanayastava .
sarvakalyāṇasampatti samaveto bhaviṣyati.
9. tava putram mahārāja dhanyaḥ ayam tanayaḥ tava
sarvakalyāṇasampatti samavetaḥ bhaviṣyati
9. O great king, this son of yours is blessed; he will be endowed with all auspiciousness and prosperity.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति दैवज्ञवचनं निशम्य वसुधाधिपः ।
हर्षपूर्णमनाः प्राह निजस्थानगतस्तदा ॥१०॥
10. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti daivajñavacanaṃ niśamya vasudhādhipaḥ .
harṣapūrṇamanāḥ prāha nijasthānagatastadā.
10. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti daivajñavacanam niśamya
vasudhādhipaḥ harṣapūrṇamanāḥ prāha nijasthānagataḥ tadā
10. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having heard these words of the astrologer, the ruler of the earth (king), whose mind was full of joy, then spoke after returning to his own place.
अवैक्षतेमं देवानां गुरुः सोमः सितो बुधः ।
नावैक्षतैनमादित्यो नार्कसूनुर्न भूमिजः ॥११॥
11. avaikṣatemaṃ devānāṃ guruḥ somaḥ sito budhaḥ .
nāvaikṣatainamādityo nārkasūnurna bhūmijaḥ.
11. avaikṣata imam devānām guruḥ somaḥ sitaḥ budhaḥ na
avaikṣata enam ādityaḥ na arkasūnuḥ na bhūmijaḥ
11. The preceptor of the gods (Jupiter), the Moon (Soma), Venus (Sita), and Mercury (Budha) gazed upon him. However, the Sun (Āditya), Saturn (Ārkasūnu), and Mars (Bhūmija) did not gaze upon him.
अवैक्षतेति यत्प्रोक्तं भवद्भिर्बहुशो वचः ।
अविक्षितेति तेनास्य ख्यातं नाम भविष्यति ॥१२॥
12. avaikṣateti yatproktaṃ bhavadbhirbahuśo vacaḥ .
avikṣiteti tenāsya khyātaṃ nāma bhaviṣyati.
12. avaikṣata iti yat proktam bhavadbhiḥ bahuśaḥ vacaḥ
avikṣita iti tena asya khyātam nāma bhaviṣyati
12. Because of the words 'avaikṣata' (he saw) that were repeatedly spoken by you, his name will become known as Avikṣit.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
अविक्षितः सुतस्तस्य वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।
अस्त्रग्राममशेषं स कण्वपुत्रादथाग्रहीत् ॥१३॥
13. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
avikṣitaḥ sutastasya vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ .
astragrāmamaśeṣaṃ sa kaṇvaputrādathāgrahīt.
13. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca avikṣitaḥ sutaḥ tasya vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ
astragrāmam aśeṣam saḥ kaṇvaputrāt atha agrahīt
13. Mārkaṇḍeya said: His son, Avikṣit, was proficient in the Vedas and Vedāṅgas. He then received all the missile lore from Kaṇva's son.
स्वरूपेणातिभिषजौ देवानां पार्थिवात्मजः ।
बुद्ध्या वाचस्पतिं कान्त्या शशाङ्कं तेजसा रविम् ॥१४॥
14. svarūpeṇātibhiṣajau devānāṃ pārthivātmajaḥ .
buddhyā vācaspatiṃ kāntyā śaśāṅkaṃ tejasā ravim.
14. svarūpeṇa atibhiṣajau devānām pārthivātmajaḥ
buddhyā vācaspatim kāntyā śaśāṅkam tejasā ravim
14. The king's son (pārthivātmaja) surpassed even the two divine physicians in physical appearance; in intellect, Bṛhaspati (Vācaspati); in beauty, the moon (śaśāṅka); and in radiance, the sun (ravi).
धैर्येणाब्धिं तयोर्वीं च सहिष्णुत्वेन वीर्यवान् ।
शौर्येण न समस्तस्य कश्चिदासीन्महात्मनः ॥१५॥
15. dhairyeṇābdhiṃ tayorvīṃ ca sahiṣṇutvena vīryavān .
śauryeṇa na samastasya kaścidāsīnmahātmanaḥ.
15. dhairyeṇa abdhim tataḥ urvīm ca sahiṣṇutvena vīryavān
śauryeṇa na samastasya kaścit āsīt mahātmanaḥ
15. In courage, he surpassed the ocean, and in endurance, the earth; he was mighty. In valor, there was no one equal to that great soul (mahātman).
स्वयंवरे तं जगृहे हेमधर्मात्मजा वरा ।
सुदेवतनया गौरी सुभद्रा बलिनः सुता ॥१६॥
16. svayaṃvare taṃ jagṛhe hemadharmātmajā varā .
sudevatanayā gaurī subhadrā balinaḥ sutā.
16. svayaṃvare tam jagṛhe hemadharmātmajā varā
sudevatanayā gaurī subhadrā balinaḥ sutā
16. In the self-choice marriage ceremony (svayaṃvara), the excellent Varā, daughter of Hemadharma, chose him. Gauri, daughter of Sudeva, and Subhadra, daughter of Balin, also chose him.
लीलावती वीरसुता वीरभद्रसुता निभा ।
भीमात्मजा मान्यवती दम्भपुत्री कुमुद्वती ॥१७॥
17. līlāvatī vīrasutā vīrabhadrasutā nibhā .
bhīmātmajā mānyavatī dambhaputrī kumudvatī.
17. līlāvatī vīrasutā vīrabhadrasutā nibhā
bhīmātmajā mānyavatī dambhaputrī kumudvatī
17. Lilavati, daughter of Vira; Nibhā, daughter of Virabhadra; Manyavati, daughter of Bhima; and Kumudvati, daughter of Dambha, also chose him.
याश्चैनं नाभिनन्दन्ति स्वयंवरकृतक्षणाः ।
ताश्चापि स बलाद्वीरो जग्राह नृपतेः सुतः ॥१८॥
18. yāścainaṃ nābhinandanti svayaṃvarakṛtakṣaṇāḥ .
tāścāpi sa balādvīro jagrāha nṛpateḥ sutaḥ.
18. yāḥ ca enam na abhinandanti svayaṃvarakṛtakṣaṇāḥ
tāḥ ca api saḥ balāt vīraḥ jagṛhe nṛpateḥ sutaḥ
18. And even those [women] who, though present at the self-choice marriage ceremony (svayaṃvara) to make their choice, did not approve of him, the heroic son of the king seized them by force.
निराकृत्य नृपान्सर्वांस्तासां पितृकुलानि च ।
स्वयं हि वीर्यमाश्रित्य बलवान्न बलोद्धतः ॥१९॥
19. nirākṛtya nṛpānsarvāṃstāsāṃ pitṛkulāni ca .
svayaṃ hi vīryamāśritya balavānna baloddhataḥ.
19. nirākṛtya nṛpān sarvān tāsām pitṛkulāni ca
svayam hi vīryam āśritya balavān na baloddhataḥ
19. Having dismissed all the kings and also the paternal families of those women, he, being powerful, indeed relied on his own prowess and not on arrogance stemming from power.
एकदा तु विशालस्य विशालाधिपतेः सुताम् ।
वैशालिनीं स सुदतीं स्वयंवरकृतक्षणाम् ॥२०॥
20. ekadā tu viśālasya viśālādhipateḥ sutām .
vaiśālinīṃ sa sudatīṃ svayaṃvarakṛtakṣaṇām.
20. ekadā tu viśālasya viśālā-adhipateḥ sutām |
vaiśālinīm sa sudatīm svayaṃvara-kṛtakṣaṇām
20. Once, he forcefully took the daughter of Viśāla, the lord of Viśālā. She was named Vaiśālinī, had beautiful teeth, and was celebrating her self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara).
परिभूयाखिलान्भूपान्स्वेच्छया न वृतस्तया ।
बलाज्जग्राह विप्रर्षे यथान्या बलगर्वितः ॥२१॥
21. paribhūyākhilānbhūpānsvecchayā na vṛtastayā .
balājjagrāha viprarṣe yathānyā balagarvitaḥ.
21. paribhūya akhilān bhūpān sva-icchayā na vṛtaḥ tayā
| balāt ajagrāha viprarṣe yathā anyaḥ bala-garvitaḥ
21. O revered Brahmin (viprarṣe), having defeated all the kings, and not chosen by her of her own free will, he, arrogant with strength, forcefully seized her, just as another powerful one might.
ततस्ते भूभृतः सर्वे बहुशस्तेन मानिना ।
निराकृताः सुनिर्विण्णाः प्रोचुरन्योन्यमाकुलाः ॥२२॥
22. tataste bhūbhṛtaḥ sarve bahuśastena māninā .
nirākṛtāḥ sunirviṇṇāḥ procuranyonyamākulāḥ.
22. tataḥ te bhūbhṛtaḥ sarve bahuśaḥ tena māninā |
nirākṛtāḥ su-nirviṇṇāḥ procuḥ anyonyam ākulāḥ
22. Then, all those kings, repeatedly disrespected by that proud one, became extremely despondent and, agitated, spoke to each other.
क्षमतां वञ्चनामेतामेकस्माद्बलशालिनाम् ।
बहूनामेकवर्णानां जन्म धिग्वो महीभृताम् ॥२३॥
23. kṣamatāṃ vañcanāmetāmekasmādbalaśālinām .
bahūnāmekavarṇānāṃ janma dhigvo mahībhṛtām.
23. kṣamatām vañcanām etām ekasmāt bala-śālinām |
bahūnām eka-varṇānām janma dhik vaḥ mahībhṛtām
23. "Pardon this deception by one who is strong. Shame on your birth, you many kings of the same class (varṇa)!"
क्षत्रियो यः क्षतात्त्राणं वध्यमानस्य दुर्मदैः ।
करोति तस्य तन्नाम वृथैवान्ये हि बिभ्रति ॥२४॥
24. kṣatriyo yaḥ kṣatāttrāṇaṃ vadhyamānasya durmadaiḥ .
karoti tasya tannāma vṛthaivānye hi bibhrati.
24. kṣatriyaḥ yaḥ kṣatāt trāṇam vadhyamānasya durmadaiḥ
karoti tasya tat nāma vṛthā eva anye hi bibhrati
24. Indeed, a kṣatriya is one who provides protection from harm to those being oppressed by the arrogant. Others who merely bear that name (kṣatriya) do so in vain.
आत्मनोऽपि क्षतत्राणं दुष्टादस्मादकुर्वताम् ।
भवतां क्षत्रियकुले जातानां कीदृशी मतिः ॥२५॥
25. ātmano'pi kṣatatrāṇaṃ duṣṭādasmādakurvatām .
bhavatāṃ kṣatriyakule jātānāṃ kīdṛśī matiḥ.
25. ātmanaḥ api kṣatatrāṇam duṣṭāt asmāt akurvatām
bhavatām kṣatriyakule jātānām kīdṛśī matiḥ
25. What kind of understanding (mati) do you, who are born in the kṣatriya family (kṣatriyakula), possess, when you do not even provide protection for yourselves from this wicked person?
उच्चार्यते स्तुतिर्या वः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः ।
सा सत्या मा वृथा वीरा भवत्वरिविनाशनात् ॥२६॥
26. uccāryate stutiryā vaḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ .
sā satyā mā vṛthā vīrā bhavatvarivināśanāt.
26. uccāryate stutiḥ yā vaḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ
sā satyā mā vṛthā vīrāḥ bhavatu arivināśanāt
26. O heroes, let the praise proclaimed for you by bards, panegyrists, and eulogists be true! Do not let it become meaningless by failing to destroy your enemies.
चरतां सा तथैवैषा भूपाश्चारैर्दिगन्तरे ।
पौरुषाश्रयिणः सर्वे विशिष्टकुलसम्भवाः ॥२७॥
27. caratāṃ sā tathaivaiṣā bhūpāścārairdigantare .
pauruṣāśrayiṇaḥ sarve viśiṣṭakulasambhavāḥ.
27. caratām sā tathā eva eṣā bhūpāḥ cāraiḥ digantare
paurūṣāśrayiṇaḥ sarve viśiṣṭakulasambhavāḥ
27. That praise, similarly, applies to those kings who, through their spies, range across distant lands. All of them are indeed reliant on their prowess and are born of distinguished families.
बिभेति को न मरणात्को युद्धेन विनाऽमरः ।
विचिन्त्यैतन्न हातव्यं पौरुषं शस्त्रवृत्तिभिः ॥२८॥
28. bibheti ko na maraṇātko yuddhena vinā'maraḥ .
vicintyaitanna hātavyaṃ pauruṣaṃ śastravṛttibhiḥ.
28. bibheti kaḥ na maraṇāt kaḥ yuddhena vinā amaraḥ
vicintya etat na hātavyam pauruṣam śastravṛttibhiḥ
28. Who does not fear death? And who can be immortal without engaging in battle? Having considered this, those whose livelihood is by arms should not abandon their valor.
एतन्निशम्य ते भूपा विस्पष्टामर्षपूरिताः ।
ऊचुः परस्परं सर्वे समुत्तस्थुश्च सायुधाः ॥२९॥
29. etanniśamya te bhūpā vispaṣṭāmarṣapūritāḥ .
ūcuḥ parasparaṃ sarve samuttasthuśca sāyudhāḥ.
29. etat niśamya te bhūpāḥ vispaṣṭāmarṣapūritāḥ
ūcuḥ parasparam sarve samuttasthuḥ ca sāyudhāḥ
29. Having heard this, those kings, filled with evident indignation, all spoke to each other and rose up with their weapons.
केचिद्रथानारुरुहुः केचिन्नागांस्तथा हयान् ।
अन्येऽमर्षपराधीनास्तमुपेताः पदातयः ॥३०॥
30. kecidrathānāruruhuḥ kecinnāgāṃstathā hayān .
anye'marṣaparādhīnāstamupetāḥ padātayaḥ.
30. kecit rathān āruruhuḥ kecit nāgān tathā hayān
anye amarṣaparādhīnāḥ tam upetāḥ padātayaḥ
30. Some mounted chariots, some (mounted) elephants, and likewise horses. Others, overwhelmed by indignation, approached him as foot soldiers.
