मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तां प्रेषयित्वा राजापि स्वभर्तृगृहमङ्गनाम् ।
चिन्तयामास निः श्वस्य किमत्र सुकतं भवेत् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tāṃ preṣayitvā rājāpi svabhartṛgṛhamaṅganām .
cintayāmāsa niḥ śvasya kimatra sukataṃ bhavet.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tām preṣayitvā rājā api svabhartṛgṛham
aṅganām cintayāmāsa niḥśvasya kim atra sukṛtam bhavet
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having sent that woman to her husband's house, the king also sighed deeply and began to ponder what righteous action could be taken in this matter.
अनर्घयोग्यता कष्टं स मामाह महामनाः ।
वैकल्यं विप्रमुद्दिश्य तथाहायं निशाचरः ॥२॥
2. anarghayogyatā kaṣṭaṃ sa māmāha mahāmanāḥ .
vaikalyaṃ vipramuddiśya tathāhāyaṃ niśācaraḥ.
2. anarghayogyatā kaṣṭam sa mām āha mahāmanāḥ
vaikalyaṃ vipram uddiśya tathā āha ayam niśācaraḥ
2. The magnanimous one (the sage) told me, 'Priceless worthiness (leads to) difficulty.' And this night-demon similarly spoke of a defect concerning the brahmin.
सोऽहं कथं करिष्यामि त्यक्ता पत्नी मया हि सा ।
अथवा ज्ञानदृष्टिं तं पृच्छामि मुनिसत्तमम् ॥३॥
3. so'haṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi tyaktā patnī mayā hi sā .
athavā jñānadṛṣṭiṃ taṃ pṛcchāmi munisattamam.
3. saḥ aham katham kariṣyāmi tyaktā patnī mayā hi
sā athavā jñānadṛṣṭim tam pṛcchāmi munisattamam
3. How can I, who am in this situation, proceed, since that wife was indeed abandoned by me? Alternatively, I shall consult that best of sages, who possesses the vision of true knowledge.
सञ्चिन्त्येत्थं स भूपालः समारुह्य च तं रथम् ।
ययौ यत्र स धर्मात्मा त्रिकालज्ञो महामिनिः ॥४॥
4. sañcintyetthaṃ sa bhūpālaḥ samāruhya ca taṃ ratham .
yayau yatra sa dharmātmā trikālajño mahāminiḥ.
4. sañcintya ittham saḥ bhūpālaḥ samāruhya ca tam ratham
yayau yatra saḥ dharmātmā trikālajñaḥ mahāmuniḥ
4. Having pondered thus, that king then mounted his chariot and went to where that great sage resided, who was a righteous soul (dharmātmā) and knew the three divisions of time.
अवरुह्य रथात् सोऽथ तं समेत्य प्रणम्य च ।
यथावृत्तं समाचख्यौ राक्षसेन समागमम् ॥५॥
5. avaruhya rathāt so'tha taṃ sametya praṇamya ca .
yathāvṛttaṃ samācakhyau rākṣasena samāgamam.
5. avaruhya rathāt saḥ atha tam sametya praṇamya
ca yathāvṛttam samācakhyau rākṣasena samāgamam
5. Then, alighting from his chariot, he approached him, bowed down, and recounted the entire incident, including his encounter with the demon (rākṣasa), exactly as it had transpired.
ब्राह्मण्या दर्शनञ्चैव दौः शील्यापगमं तथा ।
प्रेषणं भर्तृगेहे च कार्यमागमने च यत् ॥६॥
6. brāhmaṇyā darśanañcaiva dauḥ śīlyāpagamaṃ tathā .
preṣaṇaṃ bhartṛgehe ca kāryamāgamane ca yat.
6. brāhmaṇyāḥ darśanam ca eva dauḥśīlyāpagamam tathā
preṣaṇam bhartṛgehe ca kāryam āgamane ca yat
6. He also recounted his encounter with the Brahmin woman, her purification (removal of bad conduct), her dispatch to her husband's house, and the task that needed to be accomplished upon his arrival.
ऋषिरुवाच ।
ज्ञातमेतन्मया पूर्वं यत् कृतन्ते नराधिप ।
कार्यमागमने चैव मत्समीपे तवाखिलम् ॥७॥
7. ṛṣiruvāca .
jñātametanmayā pūrvaṃ yat kṛtante narādhipa .
kāryamāgamane caiva matsamīpe tavākhilam.
7. ṛṣiḥ uvāca jñātam etat mayā pūrvam yat kṛtam te
narādhipa kāryam āgamane ca eva matsamīpe tava akhilam
7. The sage said: 'O King (narādhipa), all that you have done was known to me beforehand, as was your complete task upon coming to my presence.'
पृच्छ मामिह किं कार्यं मयेत्युद्विग्नमानसः ।
त्वय्यागते महीपाल शृणु कार्यञ्च यत्त्वया ॥८॥
8. pṛccha māmiha kiṃ kāryaṃ mayetyudvignamānasaḥ .
tvayyāgate mahīpāla śṛṇu kāryañca yattvayā.
8. pṛccha mām iha kim kāryam mayā iti udvignamānasaḥ
tvayi āgate mahīpāla śṛṇu kāryam ca yat tvayā
8. With an anxious mind, you ask me here, 'What should I do?' O King (mahīpāla), when you have arrived, listen now to the task that is assigned to you.
पत्नी धर्मार्थकामानां कारणं प्रबलं नृणाम् ।
विशेषतश्च धर्मस्य सन्त्यक्तस्त्यजता हि ताम् ॥९॥
9. patnī dharmārthakāmānāṃ kāraṇaṃ prabalaṃ nṛṇām .
viśeṣataśca dharmasya santyaktastyajatā hi tām.
9. patnī dharma-artha-kāmānām kāraṇam prabalam nṛṇām
viśeṣataḥ ca dharmasya santyaktaḥ tyajatā hi tām
9. A wife is a potent means for men to attain the human aims of righteousness (dharma), prosperity (artha), and pleasure (kama); she is especially crucial for (dharma). Indeed, one who abandons her is himself abandoned (by these pursuits).
अपत्नीको नरो भूप न योग्यो निजकर्मणाम् ।
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वापि वैश्यः शूद्रोऽपि वा नृप ॥१०॥
10. apatnīko naro bhūpa na yogyo nijakarmaṇām .
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vāpi vaiśyaḥ śūdro'pi vā nṛpa.
10. apatnīkaḥ naraḥ bhūpa na yogyaḥ nija-karmaṇām
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyaḥ vā api vaiśyaḥ śūdraḥ api vā nṛpa
10. O King, a man without a wife is not fit for his prescribed duties (karma), whether he is a Brahmin, a Kshatriya, a Vaishya, or even a Shudra.
त्यजता भवता पत्नीं न शोभनमनुष्ठितम् ।
अत्याज्यो हि यथा भर्ता स्त्रीणां भर्या तथा नृणाम् ॥११॥
11. tyajatā bhavatā patnīṃ na śobhanamanuṣṭhitam .
atyājyo hi yathā bhartā strīṇāṃ bharyā tathā nṛṇām.
11. tyajatā bhavatā patnīm na śobhanam anuṣṭhitam
atyājyaḥ hi yathā bhartā strīṇām bhāryā tathā nṛṇām
11. By abandoning your wife, you have not done something proper. Indeed, just as a husband is indispensable to women, so too is a wife to men.
राजोवाच ।
भगवन् किं करोम्येष विपाको मम कर्मणाम् ।
नानुकूलानुकूलस्य यस्मात्त्यक्ता ततो मया ॥१२॥
12. rājovāca .
bhagavan kiṃ karomyeṣa vipāko mama karmaṇām .
nānukūlānukūlasya yasmāttyaktā tato mayā.
12. rājā uvāca bhagavan kim karomi eṣaḥ vipākaḥ mama
karmaṇām na anukūlānukūlasya yasmāt tyaktā tataḥ mayā
12. The King said: 'O Revered One, what can I do? This is the consequence of my actions (karma). It is not an outcome for a fortunate person, because I abandoned her.'
यद्यत्करोति तत् क्षान्तं दह्यमानेन चेतसा ।
भगवंस्तद्वियोगार्तिबिभीतेनान्तरात्मना ॥१३॥
13. yadyatkaroti tat kṣāntaṃ dahyamānena cetasā .
bhagavaṃstadviyogārtibibhītenāntarātmanā.
13. yad yat karoti tat kṣāntam dahyamānena cetasā
bhagavan tat viyoga ārti bibhītena antarātmanā
13. O Lord, whatever she might have done is forgiven by my tormented mind, and by my inner self (antarātman) terrified by the anguish of separation from her.
साम्प्रतं तु वने त्यक्ता न वेद्मि क्व नु सा गता ।
भक्षिता वापि विपिने सिंहव्याघ्रनिशाचरैः ॥१४॥
14. sāmprataṃ tu vane tyaktā na vedmi kva nu sā gatā .
bhakṣitā vāpi vipine siṃhavyāghraniśācaraiḥ.
14. sāmpratam tu vane tyaktā na vedmi kva nu sā gatā
bhakṣitā vā api vipine siṃha vyāghra niśācaraiḥ
14. But now, abandoned in the forest, I do not know where she has gone. Or perhaps she was eaten in the wilderness by lions, tigers, and night-roaming creatures.
ऋषीरुवाच ।
न भक्षिता सा भूपाल सिहव्याघ्रनिशाचरैः ।
सा त्वविप्लुतचारित्रा साम्प्रतन्तु रसातले ॥१५॥
15. ṛṣīruvāca .
na bhakṣitā sā bhūpāla sihavyāghraniśācaraiḥ .
sā tvaviplutacāritrā sāmpratantu rasātale.
15. ṛṣiḥ uvāca na bhakṣitā sā bhūpāla siṃha vyāghra
niśācaraiḥ sā tu avipluta caritrā sāmpratam tu rasātale
15. The sage said: 'O King, she was not devoured by lions, tigers, or night-roaming creatures. Indeed, she, of unblemished character, is now in the netherworld (rasātala).'
राजोवाच ।
सा नीता केन पातालमास्ते सादूषिता कथम् ।
अत्यद्भुतमिदं ब्रह्मन् यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१६॥
16. rājovāca .
sā nītā kena pātālamāste sādūṣitā katham .
atyadbhutamidaṃ brahman yathāvadvaktumarhasi.
16. rājā uvāca sā nītā kena pātālam āste sā dūṣitā katham
ati adbhutam idam brahman yathāvat vaktum arhasi
16. The King said: 'By whom was she taken to Pātāla? And how was she defiled? This is utterly astonishing, O Brahmin. You ought to narrate it exactly as it occurred.'
ऋषिरुवाच ।
पाताले नागराजोऽस्ति प्रख्यातश्च कपोतकः ।
तेन दृष्टा त्वया त्यक्ता भ्रममाणा महावने ॥१७॥
17. ṛṣiruvāca .
pātāle nāgarājo'sti prakhyātaśca kapotakaḥ .
tena dṛṣṭā tvayā tyaktā bhramamāṇā mahāvane.
17. ṛṣiḥ uvāca pātāle nāgarājaḥ asti prakhyātaḥ ca
kapotakaḥ tena dṛṣṭā tvayā tyaktā bhramamāṇā mahāvane
17. The sage said: "In Pātāla lives the renowned serpent king Kapotaka. He saw her, abandoned by you, wandering in the great forest."
सा रूपशालिनी तेन सानुरागेण पार्थिव ।
वेदितार्थेन पातालं नीता सा युवती तदा ॥१८॥
18. sā rūpaśālinī tena sānurāgeṇa pārthiva .
veditārthena pātālaṃ nītā sā yuvatī tadā.
18. sā rūpaśālinī tena sānurāgeṇa pārthiva
veditārthena pātālam nītā sā yuvatī tadā
18. O king, that beautiful young woman was then taken to Pātāla by him, who was full of affection for her and had understood her plight.
ततस्तस्य सुता सुभ्रूर्नन्दा नाम महीपते ।
भार्या मनोरमा चास्य नागराजस्य धीमतः ॥१९॥
19. tatastasya sutā subhrūrnandā nāma mahīpate .
bhāryā manoramā cāsya nāgarājasya dhīmataḥ.
19. tataḥ tasya sutā subhrūḥ nandā nāma mahīpate
bhāryā manoramā ca asya nāgarājasya dhīmataḥ
19. O king, then there was his (Kapotaka's) fair-browed daughter named Nandā, and his delightful wife, the consort of that wise serpent king.
तया मातुः सपत्नीयं सा भवित्रीति शोभना ।
दृष्टा स्वगेहं सा नीता गुप्ता चान्तः पुरे शुभा ॥२०॥
20. tayā mātuḥ sapatnīyaṃ sā bhavitrīti śobhanā .
dṛṣṭā svagehaṃ sā nītā guptā cāntaḥ pure śubhā.
20. tayā mātuḥ sapatnīyam sā bhavitrī iti śobhanā
dṛṣṭā svageham sā nītā guptā ca antaḥpure śubhā
20. The beautiful young woman was seen by Nandā, who thought, "She will become a co-wife to my mother." So, that charming woman was taken to Nandā's own house and kept hidden in the inner chambers.
यदा तु याचिता नन्दा न ददाति नृपोत्तरम् ।
मूका भविष्यसीत्याह तदा तां तनयां पिता ॥२१॥
21. yadā tu yācitā nandā na dadāti nṛpottaram .
mūkā bhaviṣyasītyāha tadā tāṃ tanayāṃ pitā.
21. yadā tu yācitā nandā na dadāti nṛpottaram
mūkā bhaviṣyasi iti āha tadā tām tanayām pitā
21. But when Nanda was asked (for marriage by a king), and she did not provide a proper answer to the king, her father then said to that daughter, 'You will become mute.'
एवं शप्ता सुता तेन सा चास्ते तत्र भूपते ।
नीता तेनोरगेन्द्रेण धृता तत्सुतया सती ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ śaptā sutā tena sā cāste tatra bhūpate .
nītā tenoragendreṇa dhṛtā tatsutayā satī.
22. evam śaptā sutā tena sā ca āste tatra bhūpate
nītā tena uragendrena dhṛtā tatsutayā satī
22. O King, thus cursed by her father, that daughter remained there. She was taken away by that serpent king and held by his daughter, remaining virtuous.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततो राजा परं हर्षमवाप्य तमपृच्छत ।
द्विजवर्यं स्वदौर्भाग्यकारणं दयितां प्रति ॥२३॥
23. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tato rājā paraṃ harṣamavāpya tamapṛcchata .
dvijavaryaṃ svadaurbhāgyakāraṇaṃ dayitāṃ prati.
23. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tataḥ rājā param harṣam avāpya tam
apṛcchat dvijavaryam svadaurbhāgyakāraṇam dayitām prati
23. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then the king, having obtained great joy, asked that excellent Brahmin about the cause of his own misfortune concerning his beloved wife.
राजोवाच ।
भगवन् सर्वलोकस्य मयि प्रीतिरनुत्तमा ।
किन्नु तत्कारणं येन स्वपत्नी नातिवत्सला ॥२४॥
24. rājovāca .
bhagavan sarvalokasya mayi prītiranuttamā .
kinnu tatkāraṇaṃ yena svapatnī nātivatsalā.
24. rājā uvāca bhagavan sarvalokasya mayi prītiḥ anuttamā
kim nu tatkāraṇam yena svapatnī na ativatsalā
24. The king said: 'O Venerable One, the affection of all people for me is unsurpassed. But what is that reason by which my own wife is not very affectionate?'
मम चासावतीवेष्टा प्राणेभ्योऽपि महामुने ।
सा च मां प्रति दुः शीला ब्रूहि यत्कारणं द्विज ॥२५॥
25. mama cāsāvatīveṣṭā prāṇebhyo'pi mahāmune .
sā ca māṃ prati duḥ śīlā brūhi yatkāraṇaṃ dvija.
25. mama ca asau atīva iṣṭā prāṇebhyaḥ api mahāmune
sā ca mām prati duḥśīlā brūhi yat kāraṇam dvija
25. O great sage, she is exceedingly dear to me, even more than my own life. Yet, she is ill-natured towards me. O Brahmin, please tell me the reason for this.
ऋषीरुवाच ।
पाणिग्रहणकाले त्वं सूर्यभौमशनैश्चरैः ।
शुक्रवाचस्पतिभ्याञ्च तव भार्यावलोकिता ॥२६॥
26. ṛṣīruvāca .
pāṇigrahaṇakāle tvaṃ sūryabhaumaśanaiścaraiḥ .
śukravācaspatibhyāñca tava bhāryāvalokitā.
26. ṛṣiḥ uvāca pāṇigrahaṇakāle tvam sūryabhaumaśanaiścaraiḥ
śukravācaspatibhyām ca tava bhāryā avalokitā
26. The sage said: At the time of your marriage, your wife was observed by the planets Sun, Mars, and Saturn, as well as by Venus and Jupiter.
तन्मुहूर्तेऽभवच्चन्द्रस्तस्याः सोमसुतस्तथा ।
परस्परविपक्षौ तौ ततः पार्थिव ते भृशम् ॥२७॥
27. tanmuhūrte'bhavaccandrastasyāḥ somasutastathā .
parasparavipakṣau tau tataḥ pārthiva te bhṛśam.
27. tat muhūrte abhavat candraḥ tasyāḥ somasutaḥ tathā
paraspara vipakṣau tau tataḥ pārthiva te bhṛśam
27. At that very moment, the Moon and her Mercury (the son of Soma) were positioned in mutual opposition. Therefore, O king, this is a great cause of trouble for you.
तद्गच्छ त्वं स्वधर्मेण परिपालय मेदिनीम् ।
पत्नीसहायः सर्वाश्च कुरु धर्मवतीः क्रियाः ॥२८॥
28. tadgaccha tvaṃ svadharmeṇa paripālaya medinīm .
patnīsahāyaḥ sarvāśca kuru dharmavatīḥ kriyāḥ.
28. tat gaccha tvam svadharmeṇa paripālaya medinīm
patnīsahāyaḥ sarvāḥ ca kuru dharmavatīḥ kriyāḥ
28. Therefore, go forth and protect the earth in accordance with your own natural law (dharma). And, with your wife as your companion, perform all virtuous actions.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्ते प्रणिपत्यैनमारुह्य स्यन्दनं ततः ।
उत्तमः पृथिवीपाल आजगाम निजं पुरम् ॥२९॥
29. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityukte praṇipatyainamāruhya syandanaṃ tataḥ .
uttamaḥ pṛthivīpāla ājagāma nijaṃ puram.
29. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca iti ukte praṇipatya enam āruhya
syandanam tataḥ uttamaḥ pṛthivīpālaḥ ājagāma nijam puram
29. Mārkaṇḍeya said: After this was spoken, the excellent king bowed down to him, then mounted his chariot, and returned to his own city.
