पुत्रावूचतुः ।
ततः काले वहुतिथे गते राजा पुनः सुतम् ।
प्राह गच्छाशु विप्राणां त्राणाय चर मेदिनीम् ॥१॥
1. putrāvūcatuḥ .
tataḥ kāle vahutithe gate rājā punaḥ sutam .

1. The two sons spoke. Then, after a long time had passed, the king again said to his son, "Go quickly! Roam the earth for the protection of the brahmins."
अश्वमेनं समारुह्य प्रातः प्रातर्दिने दिने ।
अबाधा द्विजमुख्यानामन्वेष्टव्या सदैव हि ॥२॥
2. aśvamenaṃ samāruhya prātaḥ prātardine dine .
abādhā dvijamukhyānāmanveṣṭavyā sadaiva hi.
2. aśvam enam samāruhya prātaḥ prātaḥ dine dine
abādhā dvijamukhyānām anveṣṭavyā sadā eva hi
2. Mounting this horse, he should, every morning and every day, always investigate and ensure that there is no disturbance to the chief Brahmins (dvijamukhya).
दुर्वृत्ताः सन्ति शतशो दानवाः पापयोनयः ।
तेभ्यो न स्याद्यथा बाधा मुनीनां त्वं तथा कुरु ॥३॥
3. durvṛttāḥ santi śataśo dānavāḥ pāpayonayaḥ .
tebhyo na syādyathā bādhā munīnāṃ tvaṃ tathā kuru.
3. durvṛttāḥ santi śataśaḥ dānavāḥ pāpayonayaḥ
tebhyaḥ na syāt yathā bādhā munīnām tvam tathā kuru
3. Hundreds of wicked demons (dānava), born of sin, exist. You must act so that no harm (bādhā) comes to the sages (muni) from them.
स यथोक्तस्ततः पित्रा तथा चक्रे नृपात्मजः ।
परिक्रम्य महीं सर्वां ववन्दे चरणौ पितुः ॥४॥
4. sa yathoktastataḥ pitrā tathā cakre nṛpātmajaḥ .
parikramya mahīṃ sarvāṃ vavande caraṇau pituḥ.
4. saḥ yathā uktaḥ tataḥ pitrā tathā cakre nṛpātmajaḥ
parikramya mahīm sarvām vavande caraṇau pituḥ
4. Then, the prince (nṛpātmaja), as instructed by his father, acted accordingly. Having traversed the entire earth (mahī), he bowed down to his father's feet.
अहन्यहन्यनुप्राप्ते पूर्वाह्ने नृपनन्दनः ।
ततश्च शेषं दिवसं तया रेमे सुमध्यया ॥५॥
5. ahanyahanyanuprāpte pūrvāhne nṛpanandanaḥ .
tataśca śeṣaṃ divasaṃ tayā reme sumadhyayā.
5. ahani ahani anuprāpte pūrvāhne nṛpanandanaḥ
tataḥ ca śeṣam divasam tayā reme sumadhyayā
5. Every day, once the forenoon arrived, the prince (nṛpanandana) would then spend the rest of the day enjoying himself with her, the slender-waisted one (sumadhyā).
एकदा तु चारन् सोऽथ ददर्श यमुनातटे ।
पातालकेतोरनुजं तालकेतुं कृताश्रमम् ॥६॥
6. ekadā tu cāran so'tha dadarśa yamunātaṭe .
pātālaketoranujaṃ tālaketuṃ kṛtāśramam.
6. ekadā tu cāran saḥ atha dadarśa yamunātaṭe
pātālaketoḥ anujam tālaketum kṛtāśramam
6. One day, while wandering, he then saw Tālaketu, the younger brother of Pātālaketu, who had established an hermitage (āśrama), on the bank of the Yamuna.
मायावी दानवः सोऽथ मुनिरूपं समास्थितः ।
स प्राह राजपुत्रं तं पूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन् ॥७॥
7. māyāvī dānavaḥ so'tha munirūpaṃ samāsthitaḥ .
sa prāha rājaputraṃ taṃ pūrvavairamanusmaran.
7. māyāvī dānavaḥ saḥ atha munirūpam samāsthitaḥ
saḥ prāha rājaputram tam pūrvavairam anusmaran
7. That demon, skilled in illusion (māyā), had assumed the form of a sage; he then spoke to that prince, remembering their former enmity.
राजपुत्र ब्रीवीमि त्वां तत् कुरुष्व यदीच्छसि ।
न च ते प्रार्थनाभङ्गः कार्यः सत्यप्रतिश्रव ॥८॥
8. rājaputra brīvīmi tvāṃ tat kuruṣva yadīcchasi .
na ca te prārthanābhaṅgaḥ kāryaḥ satyapratiśrava.
8. rājaputra bravīmi tvām tat kuruṣva yadi icchasi
na ca te prārthanābhaṅgaḥ kāryaḥ satyapratiśrava
8. O prince, I say to you: do that which you desire. And, O one of true promises (satyapratiśrava), your request should not be broken.
यक्ष्ये यज्ञेन धर्माय कर्तव्याश्च तथेष्टयः ।
चितयस्तत्र कर्तव्या नास्ति मे दक्षैणा यतः ॥९॥
9. yakṣye yajñena dharmāya kartavyāśca tatheṣṭayaḥ .
citayastatra kartavyā nāsti me dakṣaiṇā yataḥ.
9. yakṣye yajñena dharmāya kartavyāḥ ca tathā iṣṭayaḥ
| citayaḥ tatra kartavyāḥ na asti me dakṣaiṇā yataḥ
9. aham dharmāya yajñena yakṣye,
tathā iṣṭayaḥ ca kartavyāḥ tatra citayaḥ kartavyāḥ,
yataḥ me dakṣaiṇā na asti
9. I shall perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) for the sake of natural law (dharma); and similarly, Vedic fire rituals (iṣṭi) must be performed. Altars (citi) must be prepared there, because I have no ritual fees (dakṣaiṇā) to offer.
अतः प्रयच्छ मे वीर हिरण्यार्थं स्वभूषणम् ।
यदेतत् कण्ठलग्नं ते रक्ष चेमं माश्रमम् ॥१०॥
10. ataḥ prayaccha me vīra hiraṇyārthaṃ svabhūṣaṇam .
yadetat kaṇṭhalagnaṃ te rakṣa cemaṃ māśramam.
10. ataḥ prayaccha me vīra hiraṇyārtham svabhūṣaṇam
yat etat kaṇṭhalagnam te rakṣa ca imam mā āśramam
10. Therefore, O hero, give me your own ornament that is attached to your neck, for gold, and protect me and this hermitage (āśrama).
यावदन्तर्जले देवं वरुणं यादसां पतिम् ।
वैदिकैर्वारुणैर्मन्त्रैः प्रजानां पुष्टिहेतुकैः ॥११॥
11. yāvadantarjale devaṃ varuṇaṃ yādasāṃ patim .
vaidikairvāruṇairmantraiḥ prajānāṃ puṣṭihetukaiḥ.
11. yāvat antarjale devam varuṇam yādasām patim
vaidikaiḥ vāruṇaiḥ mantraiḥ prajānām puṣṭihetukaiḥ
11. While in the water, [praising] the god Varuna, the lord of aquatic creatures, with Vedic, Varunic (vāruṇa) mantras that cause the prosperity of beings...
अभिष्टूय त्वरायुक्तः समभ्येमीति वादिनम् ।
तं प्रणम्य ततः प्रादात् स तस्मै कण्ठभूषणम् ॥१२॥
12. abhiṣṭūya tvarāyuktaḥ samabhyemīti vādinam .
taṃ praṇamya tataḥ prādāt sa tasmai kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam.
12. abhiṣṭūya tvarāyuktaḥ samabhyemi iti vādinam tam
praṇamya tataḥ prādāt sa tasmai kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam
12. Having praised [Varuna] and being swift, he (the ascetic) said, 'I shall come back.' Then, having bowed to that speaker (the ascetic), he (the hero) gave him the neck-ornament.
प्राह यैनं भवान् यातु निर्व्यलीकेन चेतसा ।
स्थास्यामि तावदत्रैव तवाश्रमसमीपतः ॥१३॥
13. prāha yainaṃ bhavān yātu nirvyalīkena cetasā .
sthāsyāmi tāvadatraiva tavāśramasamīpataḥ.
13. prāha yena enam bhavān yātu nirvyalīkena cetasā
sthāsyāmi tāvat atra eva tava āśramasamīpataḥ
13. He (the hero) said, 'May your honor depart with an uncorrupted mind, so that this (task) may be fulfilled. Meanwhile, I shall stay right here, near your hermitage (āśrama).'
तवादेशान्महाभाग यावदागमनं तव ।
न तेऽत्र कश्चिदाबाधां करिष्यति मयि स्थिते ।
विश्रब्धश्चात्वरन् ब्रह्मन् कुरुष्व त्वं मनोगतम् ॥१४॥
14. tavādeśānmahābhāga yāvadāgamanaṃ tava .
na te'tra kaścidābādhāṃ kariṣyati mayi sthite .
viśrabdhaścātvaran brahman kuruṣva tvaṃ manogatam.
14. tava ādeśāt mahābhāga yāvat āgamanam
tava na te atra kaścit ābādhām
kariṣyati mayi sthite viśrabdhaḥ ca
atvaran brahman kuruṣva tvam manogatam
14. O illustrious one (mahābhāga), by your command (until your return), no one here will cause you any harm while I am present. Therefore, O Brahmin (brahman), confidently and without haste, accomplish what is in your mind.
पुत्रावूचतुः ।
एकमुक्तस्ततस्तेन स ममज्ज नदीजले ।
ररक्ष सोऽपि तस्यैव मायाविहितमाश्रमम् ॥१५॥
15. putrāvūcatuḥ .
ekamuktastatastena sa mamajja nadījale .
rarakṣa so'pi tasyaiva māyāvihitamāśramam.
15. putrau ūcatuḥ ekam uktaḥ tataḥ tena saḥ mamajja
nadījale rarakṣa saḥ api tasya eva māyāvihitam āśramam
15. The two sons said: 'Having been told one thing by him, he (the father) then immersed himself in the river water. And he (the speaker) protected the hermitage created by his (the father's) own illusion (māyā).'
गत्वा जलाशयात् तस्मात् तालकेतुश्च तत्परम् ।
मदालसायाः प्रत्यक्षमन्येषाञ्चैतदुक्तवान् ॥१६॥
16. gatvā jalāśayāt tasmāt tālaketuśca tatparam .
madālasāyāḥ pratyakṣamanyeṣāñcaitaduktavān.
16. gatvā jalāśayāt tasmāt tālaketuḥ ca tatparam
madālasāyāḥ pratyakṣam anyeṣām ca etat uktavān
16. Having gone from that lake (jalāśaya), Tālaketu, fully absorbed, then said this directly to Madālasā and to others.
तालकेतुरुवाच ।
वीरः कुवलयाश्वोऽसौ ममाश्रमसमीपतः ।
केनापि दुष्टदैत्येन कुर्वन् रक्षां तपस्विनाम् ॥१७॥
17. tālaketuruvāca .
vīraḥ kuvalayāśvo'sau mamāśramasamīpataḥ .
kenāpi duṣṭadaityena kurvan rakṣāṃ tapasvinām.
17. tālaketuḥ uvāca vīraḥ kuvalayāśvaḥ asau mama āśramasampītaḥ
kena api duṣṭadaityena kurvan rakṣām tapasvinām
17. Tālaketu said: 'That brave Kuvalayāśva, while protecting the ascetics, (was attacked or faced danger) near my hermitage by some wicked demon.'
युध्यमानो यथाशक्ति निघ्नन् ब्रह्मद्विषो युधि ।
मायामाश्रित्य पापेन भिन्नः शूलेन वक्षसी ॥१८॥
18. yudhyamāno yathāśakti nighnan brahmadviṣo yudhi .
māyāmāśritya pāpena bhinnaḥ śūlena vakṣasī.
18. yudhyamānaḥ yathāśakti nighnan brahmadvīṣaḥ
yudhi māyām āśritya pāpena bhinnaḥ śūlena vakṣasi
18. Fighting with full might and slaying the enemies of the sacred (brahma-dviṣaḥ) in battle, he was pierced in the chest by a wicked person, who had resorted to illusion (māyā), with a spear.
म्रियमाणेन तेनेदं दत्तं मे कण्ठभूषणम् ।
प्रापितश्चाग्निसंयोगं स वने शूद्रतापसैः ॥१९॥
19. mriyamāṇena tenedaṃ dattaṃ me kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam .
prāpitaścāgnisaṃyogaṃ sa vane śūdratāpasaiḥ.
19. mriyamāṇena tena idam dattam me kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam
prāpitaḥ ca agnisaṃyogam sa vane śūdratāpasaiḥ
19. By that dying one, this neck ornament was given to me. And he was cremated in the forest by the śūdra ascetics.
कृतार्तह्रेषाशब्दो वै त्रस्तः साश्रुविलोचनः ।
नीतः सोऽश्वश्च तेनैव दानवेन दुरात्मना ॥२०॥
20. kṛtārtahreṣāśabdo vai trastaḥ sāśruvilocanaḥ .
nītaḥ so'śvaśca tenaiva dānavena durātmanā.
20. kṛtārtahreṣāśabdaḥ vai trastaḥ sāśruvilocanaḥ
nītaḥ saḥ aśvaḥ ca tena eva dānavena durātmanā
20. Indeed, that horse, which had made a distressed neighing sound, was terrified and had tearful eyes, and it was led away by that very wicked demon.
एतन्मया नृशंसेन दृष्टं दुष्कृतकारिणा ।
यदत्रानन्तरं कृत्यं क्रियतां तदकालिकम् ॥२१॥
21. etanmayā nṛśaṃsena dṛṣṭaṃ duṣkṛtakāriṇā .
yadatrānantaraṃ kṛtyaṃ kriyatāṃ tadakālikam.
21. etat mayā nṛśaṃsena dṛṣṭam duṣkṛtakāriṇā yat
atra anantaram kṛtyam kriyatām tat akālikam
21. This (terrible event) has been witnessed by me, a cruel and evil-doing person. Therefore, whatever action is to be taken immediately now, let it be done without delay.
हृदयाश्वासनञ्चैतद् गृह्यतां कण्ठभूषणम् ।
नास्माकं हि सुवर्णेन कृत्यमस्ति तपस्विनाम् ॥२२॥
22. hṛdayāśvāsanañcaitad gṛhyatāṃ kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam .
nāsmākaṃ hi suvarṇena kṛtyamasti tapasvinām.
22. hṛdayāśvāsanam ca etat gṛhyatām kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam
na asmākam hi suvarṇena kṛtyam asti tapasvinām
22. Accept this necklace as a solace for your heart (hṛdayāśvāsana). Indeed, we ascetics (tapasvin) have no use for gold.
पुत्रावूचतुः ।
इत्युक्त्वोत्सृज्य दत्भूमौ स जगाम यथागतम् ।
निपपात जनः सोऽथ शोकार्तो मूर्च्छयाऽतुरः ॥२३॥
23. putrāvūcatuḥ .
ityuktvotsṛjya datbhūmau sa jagāma yathāgatam .
nipapāta janaḥ so'tha śokārto mūrcchayā'turaḥ.
23. putrau ūcatuḥ iti uktvā utsṛjya dat bhūmau saḥ jagāma yathā
āgatam nipapāta janaḥ saḥ atha śoka ārtaḥ mūrcchayā āturaḥ
23. The two sons recounted: Having thus spoken, and having cast it on the ground, he departed the way he had come. Then that person (the king), afflicted by grief and distressed by fainting, collapsed.
तत्क्षणात् चेतनां प्राप्य सर्वास्ता नृपयोषितः ।
राजपत्न्यश्च राजा च विलेपुरतिदुः खिताः ॥२४॥
24. tatkṣaṇāt cetanāṃ prāpya sarvāstā nṛpayoṣitaḥ .
rājapatnyaśca rājā ca vilepuratiduḥ khitāḥ.
24. tat kṣaṇāt cetanām prāpya sarvāḥ tāḥ nṛpayoṣitaḥ
rājapatnyaḥ ca rājā ca vilepuḥ ati duḥkhitāḥ
24. Immediately, regaining consciousness, all those royal ladies and the queens, along with the king, lamented, deeply distressed.
मदालसा तु द् दृष्ट्वा तदीयं कण्ठभूषणम् ।
तत्याजाशु प्रियान् प्राणान् श्रुत्वा च निहन्त पतिम् ॥२५॥
25. madālasā tu d dṛṣṭvā tadīyaṃ kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam .
tatyājāśu priyān prāṇān śrutvā ca nihanta patim.
25. madālasā tu dṛṣṭvā tadīyam kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam
tatyāja āśu priyān prāṇān śrutvā ca nihanta patim
25. But Madalasa, having seen his necklace and having heard that her husband was killed, quickly gave up her dear life (prāṇa).
ततस्तथा महाक्रन्दः पौराणां भवनेष्वभूत् ।
यथैव तस्य नृपतेः स्वगेहे समवर्तत ॥२६॥
26. tatastathā mahākrandaḥ paurāṇāṃ bhavaneṣvabhūt .
yathaiva tasya nṛpateḥ svagehe samavartata.
26. tataḥ tathā mahākrandaḥ paurāṇām bhavaneṣu abhūt
yathā eva tasya nṛpateḥ svagehe samavartata
26. Then, a great wailing arose in the houses of the citizens, just as it had occurred in the king's own palace.
राजा च तां मृतां दृष्ट्वा विना भर्त्रा मदालसाम् ।
प्रत्युवाच जनं सर्वं विमृश्य सुस्थमानसः ॥२७॥
27. rājā ca tāṃ mṛtāṃ dṛṣṭvā vinā bhartrā madālasām .
pratyuvāca janaṃ sarvaṃ vimṛśya susthamānasaḥ.
27. rājā ca tām mṛtām dṛṣṭvā vinā bhartrā madālasām
prati uvāca janam sarvam vimṛśya susthamānasaḥ
27. And the king, having seen Madālasā dead and without her husband, reflected deeply and, with a calm mind, addressed all the people.
न रोदितव्यं पश्यामि भवतामात्मनस्तथा ।
सर्वेषामेव संचिन्त्य सम्बन्धानामनित्यताम् ॥२८॥
28. na roditavyaṃ paśyāmi bhavatāmātmanastathā .
sarveṣāmeva saṃcintya sambandhānāmanityatām.
28. na roditavyam paśyāmi bhavatām ātmanaḥ tathā
sarveṣām eva saṃcintya sambandhānām anityatām
28. I see no reason for you to weep for yourselves (ātman), or for all of us, having thoroughly reflected on the impermanence of all relationships.
किन्नु शोचामि तनयं किन्नु शोचाम्यहं स्नुषाम् ।
विमृश्य कृतकृत्यत्वाम्नम्येऽशोच्यावुभावपि ॥२९॥
29. kinnu śocāmi tanayaṃ kinnu śocāmyahaṃ snuṣām .
vimṛśya kṛtakṛtyatvāmnamye'śocyāvubhāvapi.
29. kim nu śocāmi tanayam kim nu śocāmi aham snuṣām
vimṛśya kṛtakṛtyatvāt namye aśocyau ubhau api
29. Why should I mourn my son? Why should I mourn my daughter-in-law? Having considered that they both fulfilled their duties, I deem them both not worthy of grief.
मच्छ्रु श्रुपुर्मद्वचनाद्द्विजरक्षणतत्परः ।
प्राप्तो मे यः सुतो मृत्युं कथं शोच्यः स धीमताम् ॥३०॥
30. macchru śrupurmadvacanāddvijarakṣaṇatatparaḥ .
prāpto me yaḥ suto mṛtyuṃ kathaṃ śocyaḥ sa dhīmatām.
30. mat śru śrupuḥ mad-vacanāt dvija-rakṣaṇa-tatparaḥ
prāptaḥ me yaḥ sutaḥ mṛtyum katham śocyaḥ saḥ dhīmatām
30. How can that son of mine, who, having listened to my instruction and by my word, was dedicated to the protection of brahmins, and who has attained death, be lamented by the wise?
अवश्यं याति यद्देहं तद्द्विजानां कृते यदि ।
मम पुत्रेण संत्यक्तं नन्वभ्युदयकारि तत् ॥३१॥
31. avaśyaṃ yāti yaddehaṃ taddvijānāṃ kṛte yadi .
mama putreṇa saṃtyaktaṃ nanvabhyudayakāri tat.
31. avaśyam yāti yat deham tat dvijānām kṛte yadi
mama putreṇa saṃtyaktam nanu abhyudaya-kāri tat
31. If the body, which must inevitably perish, was abandoned by my son for the sake of brahmins, then surely that act leads to prosperity.
इयञ्च सत्कुलोत्पन्ना भर्तर्येवमनुव्रतां ।
कथन्नु शोच्या नारीणां भर्तुरन्यन्न दैवतम् ॥३२॥
32. iyañca satkulotpannā bhartaryevamanuvratāṃ .
kathannu śocyā nārīṇāṃ bharturanyanna daivatam.
32. iyam ca sat-kula-utpannā bhartari evam anuvratām
katham nu śocyā nārīṇām bhartuḥ anyat na daivatam
32. And this woman, born of a good family, who is thus devoted to her husband – how can she be lamented among women, for whom there is no other deity (daivatam) than her husband?
अस्माकं बान्धवानाञ्च तथान्येषां दयावताम् ।
शोच्या ह्येषा भवेदेवं यदि भर्त्रा वियोगिनी ॥३३॥
33. asmākaṃ bāndhavānāñca tathānyeṣāṃ dayāvatām .
śocyā hyeṣā bhavedevaṃ yadi bhartrā viyoginī.
33. asmākam bāndhavānām ca tathā anyeṣām dayāvatām
śocyā hi eṣā bhavet evam yadi bhartrā viyoginī
33. She would indeed be lamentable to us, our relatives, and other compassionate people, if she were separated from her husband.
या तु भर्तुर्वधं श्रुत्वा तत्क्षणादेव भामिनी ।
भर्तारमनुयातेयं न शोच्यातो विपश्चिताम् ॥३४॥
34. yā tu bharturvadhaṃ śrutvā tatkṣaṇādeva bhāminī .
bhartāramanuyāteyaṃ na śocyāto vipaścitām.
34. yā tu bhartuḥ vadham śrutvā tatkṣaṇāt eva bhāminī
bhartāram anuyātā iyam na śocyā ataḥ vipaścitām
34. Indeed, that passionate woman (bhāminī) who, upon hearing of her husband's death, immediately followed him, is not to be lamented by the wise.
ताः शोच्या या वियोगिन्यो न शोच्या या मृताः सह ।
भर्त्रा वियोगस्त्वनया नानुभूतः कृतज्ञया ॥३५॥
35. tāḥ śocyā yā viyoginyo na śocyā yā mṛtāḥ saha .
bhartrā viyogastvanayā nānubhūtaḥ kṛtajñayā.
35. tāḥ śocyā yāḥ viyoginyaḥ na śocyā yāḥ mṛtāḥ saha
bhartrā viyogaḥ tu anayā na anubhūtaḥ kṛtajñayā
35. Those women who are separated (from their husbands) are to be lamented, but not those who died along with their husbands. Indeed, separation was not experienced by this grateful woman.
दातारं सर्वसौख्यानामिह चामुत्र चोभयोः ।
लोकयोः का हि भर्तारं नारी मन्येत मानुषम् ॥३६॥
36. dātāraṃ sarvasaukhyānāmiha cāmutra cobhayoḥ .
lokayoḥ kā hi bhartāraṃ nārī manyeta mānuṣam.
36. dātāram sarvasaukhyānām iha ca amutra ca ubhayoḥ
lokayoḥ kā hi bhartāram nārī manyeta mānuṣam
36. What woman, indeed, would consider her husband - the giver of all happiness in both this world and the next (loka) - to be a mere mortal?
नासौ शोच्यो न चैवेयं नाहं तज्जननी न च ।
त्यजता ब्राह्मणार्थाय प्राणान् सर्वे स्म तारिताः ॥३७॥
37. nāsau śocyo na caiveyaṃ nāhaṃ tajjananī na ca .
tyajatā brāhmaṇārthāya prāṇān sarve sma tāritāḥ.
37. na asau śocyaḥ na ca eva iyam na aham tat jananī na
ca tyajatā brāhmaṇārthāya prāṇān sarve sma tāritāḥ
37. Neither is he (Daśaratha) to be lamented, nor indeed is this woman (Sītā), nor am I, nor is that mother (Kaikeyī or Sumitrā). By him sacrificing his lives (prāṇān) for the sake of the Brahmin (brāhmaṇa), we have all indeed been saved.
विप्राणं मम धर्मस्य गतः स हि महामतिः ।
आनृण्यमर्धभुक्तस्य त्यागाद् देहस्य मे सुतः ॥३८॥
38. viprāṇaṃ mama dharmasya gataḥ sa hi mahāmatiḥ .
ānṛṇyamardhabhuktasya tyāgād dehasya me sutaḥ.
38. viprāṇām mama dharmasya gataḥ sa hi mahāmatiḥ
ānṛṇyam ardhabhuktasya tyāgāt dehasya me sutaḥ
38. Indeed, that great-minded son of mine, by sacrificing his body - a life only half-lived - fulfilled his debt concerning Brahmins and my own sacred duty (dharma).
मातुः सतीत्वं मद्वंशवैमल्यं शौर्यमात्मनः ।
संग्रामे संत्यजन् प्राणान् नात्यजद् द्विजरक्षणम् ॥३९॥
39. mātuḥ satītvaṃ madvaṃśavaimalyaṃ śauryamātmanaḥ .
saṃgrāme saṃtyajan prāṇān nātyajad dvijarakṣaṇam.
39. mātuḥ satītvaṃ madvamśavaimalyaṃ śauryaṃ ātmanaḥ
saṅgrāme saṃtyajan prāṇān na atyajat dvijarakṣaṇam
39. In battle, while sacrificing his life, he did not abandon his mother's chastity, the purity of my lineage, his own valor (ātman), or the protection of Brahmins.
पुत्रावूचतुः ।
ततः कुवलयाश्वस्य माता भर्तुरनन्तरम् ।
श्रुत्वा पुत्रवधं तादृक् प्राह दृष्ट्वा तु तं पतिम् ॥४०॥
40. putrāvūcatuḥ .
tataḥ kuvalayāśvasya mātā bharturanantaram .
śrutvā putravadhaṃ tādṛk prāha dṛṣṭvā tu taṃ patim.
40. putrau ūcatuḥ | tataḥ kuvalayāśvasya mātā bhartuḥ anantaram
| śrutvā putravadham tādṛk prāha dṛṣṭvā tu tam patim
40. The two sons said: Then, Kuvalayāśva's mother, having heard of her son's slaying and seeing her husband, spoke to him in that way, following her husband's [statement].
मातोवाच ।
न मे मात्रा न मे स्वस्त्रा प्राप्ता प्रीतिर्नृपेदृशी ।
श्रुत्वा मुनिपरित्राणे हतं पुत्रं यथा मया ॥४१॥
41. mātovāca .
na me mātrā na me svastrā prāptā prītirnṛpedṛśī .
śrutvā muniparitrāṇe hataṃ putraṃ yathā mayā.
41. mātā uvāca | na me mātrā na me svasrā prāptā prītiḥ nṛpa
īdṛśī | śrutvā muniparitrāṇe hatam putram yathā mayā
41. The mother said: 'O King, I have never experienced such joy from my mother or my sister as I have now, having heard that my son was slain while protecting the sage.'
शोचतां बान्धवानां ये निः श्वसन्तोऽतिदुः खिताः ।
म्रियन्ते व्याधिना क्लिष्टास्तेषां माता वृथाप्रजा ॥४२॥
42. śocatāṃ bāndhavānāṃ ye niḥ śvasanto'tiduḥ khitāḥ .
mriyante vyādhinā kliṣṭāsteṣāṃ mātā vṛthāprajā.
42. śocatām bāndhavānām ye niḥ śvasantaḥ atiduḥkhitāḥ
mriyante vyādhinā kliṣṭāḥ teṣām mātā vṛthāprajā
42. The mother of those who die afflicted by disease, sighing and exceedingly distressed while their relatives grieve, has given birth in vain.
संग्रामे युध्यमाना येऽभीता गोद्विजरक्षणे ।
क्षुण्णाः शस्त्रैर्विपद्यन्ते त एव भुवि मानवाः ॥४३॥
43. saṃgrāme yudhyamānā ye'bhītā godvijarakṣaṇe .
kṣuṇṇāḥ śastrairvipadyante ta eva bhuvi mānavāḥ.
43. saṃgrāme yudhyamānāḥ ye abhītāḥ godvijarakṣaṇe
kṣuṇṇāḥ śastraiḥ vipadyante te eva bhuvi mānavāḥ
43. Those humans who fight fearlessly in battle for the protection of cows and brahmins, and die wounded by weapons - they alone are truly worthy on this earth.
अर्थिनां मित्रवर्गस्य विद्विषाञ्च पराङ्मुखः ।
यो न याति पिता तेन पुत्री माता च वीरसूः ॥४४॥
44. arthināṃ mitravargasya vidviṣāñca parāṅmukhaḥ .
yo na yāti pitā tena putrī mātā ca vīrasūḥ.
44. arthinām mitravargasya vidviṣām ca parāṅmukhaḥ
yaḥ na yāti pitā tena putrī mātā ca vīrasūḥ
44. A father who turns his back on petitioners, his circle of friends, and his enemies - due to him, neither his daughter nor his mother is considered to have borne heroes.
गर्भक्लेशः स्त्रियो मन्ये साफल्यं भजते तदा ।
यदारिविजयी वा स्यात् संग्रामे वा हतः सुतः ॥४५॥
45. garbhakleśaḥ striyo manye sāphalyaṃ bhajate tadā .
yadārivijayī vā syāt saṃgrāme vā hataḥ sutaḥ.
45. garbhakleśaḥ striyaḥ manye sāphalyam bhajate tadā
yadā arivijayī vā syāt saṃgrāme vā hataḥ sutaḥ
45. I believe that a woman's suffering during pregnancy achieves its fulfillment when her son either becomes victorious over enemies or is slain in battle.
पुत्रावूचतुः ।
ततः स राजा संस्कारं पुत्रपत्नीमलम्भयत् ।
निर्गम्य च बहिः स्नातो ददौ पुत्राय चोदकम् ॥४६॥
46. putrāvūcatuḥ .
tataḥ sa rājā saṃskāraṃ putrapatnīmalambhayat .
nirgamya ca bahiḥ snāto dadau putrāya codakam.
46. putrau ūcatuḥ | tataḥ sa rājā saṃskāram putra-patnīm
alambhayat | nirgamya ca bahiḥ snātaḥ dadau putrāya ca udakam
46. The two sons said: "Then that king had his son's wife perform a purificatory rite (saṃskāra). And having gone outside, after bathing, he gave water to his son."
तालकेतुश्च निर्गम्य तथैव यमुनाजलात् ।
राजपुत्रमुवाचेदं प्रणयान्मधुरं वचः ॥४७॥
47. tālaketuśca nirgamya tathaiva yamunājalāt .
rājaputramuvācedaṃ praṇayānmadhuraṃ vacaḥ.
47. tālaketuḥ ca nirgamya tathā eva yamunā-jalāt |
rāja-putram uvāca idam praṇayāt madhuram vacaḥ
47. And Tālaketu, having also emerged from the waters of Yamunā, spoke these sweet words full of affection to the prince.
गच्छ भूपालपुत्र त्वं कृतार्थोऽहं कृतस्त्वया ।
कार्यं चिराभिलषितं त्वय्यत्राविचले स्थिते ॥४८॥
48. gaccha bhūpālaputra tvaṃ kṛtārtho'haṃ kṛtastvayā .
kāryaṃ cirābhilaṣitaṃ tvayyatrāvicale sthite.
48. gaccha bhūpāla-putra tvam kṛta-arthaḥ aham kṛtaḥ tvayā
| kāryam cira-abhilaṣitam tvayi atra avicale sthite
48. "Go, son of the king! I have been made successful by you. The long-desired task has been accomplished now that you are steadfast here."
वारुणं यज्ञकार्यञ्च जलेशस्य महात्मनः ।
तन्मया साधितं सर्वं यन्ममासीदभीप्सितम् ॥४९॥
49. vāruṇaṃ yajñakāryañca jaleśasya mahātmanaḥ .
tanmayā sādhitaṃ sarvaṃ yanmamāsīdabhīpsitam.
49. vāruṇam yajña-kāryam ca jaleśasya mahā-ātmanaḥ |
tat mayā sādhitaṃ sarvam yat mama āsīt abhīpsitam
49. "The sacrificial (yajña) task pertaining to the great-souled water-god Varuṇa, and indeed all that I desired, has been accomplished by me."
प्रणिपत्य स तं प्रायाद्राजपुत्रः पुरं पितुः ।
समारुह्य तमेवाश्वं सुपर्णानिलविक्रमम् ॥५०॥
50. praṇipatya sa taṃ prāyādrājaputraḥ puraṃ pituḥ .
samāruhya tamevāśvaṃ suparṇānilavikramam.
50. praṇipatya sa taṃ prāyāt rājaputraḥ puraṃ pituḥ
samāruhya tam eva aśvaṃ suparṇānilavikramam
50. Having bowed down to him, that prince departed for his father's city, riding that very horse which possessed the speed and prowess of Suparṇa (Garuda) and the wind.
