मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तस्य सन्ताप्यमाने तु तेजसोर्ध्वमधस्यथा ।
सिसृक्षुश्चिन्तयामास पद्मयोनिः पितामहः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tasya santāpyamāne tu tejasordhvamadhasyathā .
sisṛkṣuścintayāmāsa padmayoniḥ pitāmahaḥ.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tasya santāpyamāne tu tejasaḥ ūrdhvam
adhas ca athā sisṛkṣuḥ cintayāmāsa padmayoniḥ pitāmahaḥ
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: As his radiance was being intensely heated, both from above and below, the lotus-born Grandfather (Brahmā), desiring to create, then began to reflect.
सृष्टिः कृतापि मे नाशं प्रयास्यत्यभितेजसा ।
भास्वतः सृष्टिसंहारस्थितिहेतोर्महात्मनः ॥२॥
2. sṛṣṭiḥ kṛtāpi me nāśaṃ prayāsyatyabhitejasā .
bhāsvataḥ sṛṣṭisaṃhārasthitihetormahātmanaḥ.
2. sṛṣṭiḥ kṛtā api me nāśam prayāsyati abhitejasā
bhāsvataḥ sṛṣṭisaṃhārasthitihetoḥ mahātmanaḥ
2. Even my creation will be annihilated by the immense radiance of the great-souled (mahātman) Sun (Bhāsvat), who is the cause of creation, dissolution, and sustenance.
अप्राणाः प्राणिनः सर्व आपः शुष्यन्ति तेजसा ।
न चाम्भसा विना सृष्टिर्विश्वस्यास्य भविष्यति ॥३॥
3. aprāṇāḥ prāṇinaḥ sarva āpaḥ śuṣyanti tejasā .
na cāmbhasā vinā sṛṣṭirviśvasyāsya bhaviṣyati.
3. aprāṇāḥ prāṇinaḥ sarva āpaḥ śuṣyanti tejasā na
ca ambhasā vinā sṛṣṭiḥ viśvasya asya bhaviṣyati
3. All living beings become lifeless (aprāṇa), and the waters dry up due to the heat. And without water (ambhas), this universe's creation (sṛṣṭi) will not exist.
इति सञ्चिन्त्य भगवान्स्तोत्रं भगवतो रवेः ।
चकार तन्मये भूत्वा ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ॥४॥
4. iti sañcintya bhagavānstotraṃ bhagavato raveḥ .
cakāra tanmaye bhūtvā brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ.
4. iti sañcintya bhagavān stotram bhagavataḥ raveḥ
cakāra tanmaye bhūtvā brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ
4. Having thus pondered, Lord Brahmā (brahman), the grandfather of the worlds, became completely absorbed in Him and composed a hymn of praise to the glorious Sun (Bhagavat Ravi).
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
नमस्ये यन्मयं सर्वमेतत्सर्वमयश्च यः ।
विश्वमूर्तिः परं ज्योतिर्यत्तद्ध्यायन्ति योगिनः ॥५॥
5. brahmovāca .
namasye yanmayaṃ sarvametatsarvamayaśca yaḥ .
viśvamūrtiḥ paraṃ jyotiryattaddhyāyanti yoginaḥ.
5. brahmā uvāca namasye yanmayam sarvam etat sarvamayaḥ ca
yaḥ viśvamūrtiḥ param jyotiḥ yat tat dhyāyanti yoginaḥ
5. Brahmā (brahman) said: 'I offer reverence to Him of whom all this (universe) consists, and who Himself pervades all. He is the universal form (viśvamūrti), the supreme light, upon whom the yogis (yogin) meditate (dhyāna).'
य ऋङ्मयो यो यजुषां निधानं साम्नां च यो योनिरचिन्त्यशक्तिः ।
त्रयीमयः स्थूलतयार्धमात्रा परस्वरूपो गुणपारयोग्यः ॥६॥
6. ya ṛṅmayo yo yajuṣāṃ nidhānaṃ sāmnāṃ ca yo yoniracintyaśaktiḥ .
trayīmayaḥ sthūlatayārdhamātrā parasvarūpo guṇapārayogyaḥ.
6. ya ṛṅmayaḥ yaḥ yajuṣām nidhānam
sāmnām ca yaḥ yoniḥ acintyaśaktiḥ
trayīmayaḥ sthūlatayā ardhamātrā
parasvarūpaḥ guṇapārayogyaḥ
6. He who consists of the Ṛg Veda, who is the abode of the Yajur Vedas, and who is the source of the Sāma Vedas; He who possesses inconceivable power; He who is made of the three Vedas, existing as the half-mora (ardhamātrā) in his gross form; He who has the supreme form and is worthy of transcending the qualities (guṇa).
त्वां सर्वहेतुं परमं च वेद्यमाद्यं परं ज्योतिरवेद्यरूपम् ।
स्थूलं च देवात्मतया नमस्ते भास्वन्तमाद्यं परमं परेभ्यः ॥७॥
7. tvāṃ sarvahetuṃ paramaṃ ca vedyamādyaṃ paraṃ jyotiravedyarūpam .
sthūlaṃ ca devātmatayā namaste bhāsvantamādyaṃ paramaṃ parebhyaḥ.
7. tvām sarvahetum paramam ca vedyam
ādyam param jyotiḥ avedyarūpam
sthūlam ca devātmatayā namaḥ te
bhāsvantam ādyam paramam parebhyaḥ
7. Salutations to you, who are the cause of all, the supreme and knowable reality, the primordial and ultimate light, whose form is unknowable, and who, in your divine (ātman) form, are also gross. Salutations to you, the shining, primordial, and supreme one among all others.
सृष्टिं करोमि यदहं तव शक्तिराद्या तत्प्रेरितो जलमहीपवनाग्निरूपाम् ।
तद्देवतादिविषयां प्रणवाद्यशेषां नात्मेच्छया स्थितिलयावपि तद्वदेव ॥८॥
8. sṛṣṭiṃ karomi yadahaṃ tava śaktirādyā tatprerito jalamahīpavanāgnirūpām .
taddevatādiviṣayāṃ praṇavādyaśeṣāṃ nātmecchayā sthitilayāvapi tadvadeva.
8. sṛṣṭim karomi yat aham tava śaktiḥ ādyā
tatpreritaḥ jalamahīpavanāgnirūpām
tatdevatādiviṣayām praṇavādyaśeṣām na
ātmeccayā sthitilayau api tadvadeva
8. I create this creation (sṛṣṭi) – the primordial power (śakti) is yours – being impelled by that (power), I create the forms of water, earth, wind, and fire. This creation, whose deities and objects are all included from the praṇava (OM) onwards, is not by my own will. Similarly, the maintenance and dissolution are also not by my own will.
वह्निस्त्वमेव जलशोषणतः पृथिव्याः सृष्टिं करोषि जगतां च तथाद्य पाकम् ।
व्यापी त्वमेव भगवन्गगनस्वरूपं त्वं पञ्चधा जगदिदं परिपासि विश्वम् ॥९॥
9. vahnistvameva jalaśoṣaṇataḥ pṛthivyāḥ sṛṣṭiṃ karoṣi jagatāṃ ca tathādya pākam .
vyāpī tvameva bhagavangaganasvarūpaṃ tvaṃ pañcadhā jagadidaṃ paripāsi viśvam.
9. vahniḥ tvam eva jalaśoṣaṇataḥ pṛthivyāḥ
sṛṣṭim karoṣi jagatām ca tathā ādya pākam
vyāpī tvam eva bhagavan gaganasvarūpam
tvam pañcadhā jagat idam paripāsi viśvam
9. Indeed, you are fire; you create the earth by drying up its waters, and likewise, you primarily initiate the cooking (digestion) of all beings. O Lord (bhagavan), you yourself are pervasive, like the form of space (gaganasvarūpa). You alone protect this entire universe in five ways.
यज्ञैर्यजन्ति परमात्मविदो भवन्तं विष्णुस्वरूपमखिलेष्टिमयं विवस्वन् ।
ध्यायन्ति चापि यतयो नियतात्मचित्ताः सर्वेश्वरं परममात्मविमुक्तिकामा ॥१०॥
10. yajñairyajanti paramātmavido bhavantaṃ viṣṇusvarūpamakhileṣṭimayaṃ vivasvan .
dhyāyanti cāpi yatayo niyatātmacittāḥ sarveśvaraṃ paramamātmavimuktikāmā.
10. yajñaiḥ yajanti paramātmavidaḥ bhavantam
viṣṇusvarūpam akhileṣṭimayam vivasvan
dhyāyanti ca api yatayaḥ niyatātmacittāḥ
sarveśvaram paramam ātmavimuktikāmāḥ
10. O Vivsvan, knowers of the Supreme Self (ātman) worship You with sacrifices (yajñas), who are the embodiment of Viṣṇu and comprised of all sacrificial rites. Moreover, ascetics, whose inner selves (ātman) and minds are controlled, meditate upon You, the supreme Lord of all, seeking the liberation (mokṣa) of their individual selves (ātman).
नमस्ते देवरूपाय यज्ञरूपाय ते नमः ।
परब्रह्मस्वरूपाय चिन्त्यमानाय योगिभिः ॥११॥
11. namaste devarūpāya yajñarūpāya te namaḥ .
parabrahmasvarūpāya cintyamānāya yogibhiḥ.
11. namaḥ te devarūpāya yajñarūpāya te namaḥ
parabrahmasvarūpāya cintyamānāya yogibhiḥ
11. devarūpāya yajñarūpāya parabrahmasvarūpāya
yogibhiḥ cintyamānāya te namaḥ te namaḥ
11. Salutations to You, whose form is divine, and whose form is the Vedic ritual (yajña). Salutations to You, whose intrinsic nature (svarūpa) is the Supreme Reality (Brahman) and who is contemplated by yogis.
उपसंहर तेजो यत्तेजसः संहतिस्तव ।
सृष्टेर्विधाताय विभो सृष्टौ चाहं समुद्यतः ॥१२॥
12. upasaṃhara tejo yattejasaḥ saṃhatistava .
sṛṣṭervidhātāya vibho sṛṣṭau cāhaṃ samudyataḥ.
12. upasaṃhara tejaḥ yat tejasaḥ saṃhatiḥ tava
sṛṣṭeḥ vidhātāya vibho sṛṣṭau ca aham samudyataḥ
12. O all-pervading one (vibhu), please withdraw your radiance, which is a concentration of your splendor. This is for the sake of the ordainer of creation, and I myself am ready to commence creation.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्येवं संस्तुतो भास्वान्ब्रह्मणा सर्गकर्तृणा ।
उपसंहृतवांस्तेजः परं स्वल्पमधारयत् ॥१३॥
13. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityevaṃ saṃstuto bhāsvānbrahmaṇā sargakartṛṇā .
upasaṃhṛtavāṃstejaḥ paraṃ svalpamadhārayat.
13. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca iti evam saṃstutaḥ bhāsvān brahmaṇā
sargakartṛṇā upasaṃhṛtavān tejaḥ param svalpam adhārayat
13. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Thus praised by Brahmā, the creator of creation, the resplendent Sun god withdrew his radiance and retained only a very small portion.
चकार च ततः सृष्टिं जगतः पद्मसम्भवः ।
तथा तेषु महाभागः पूर्वकल्पान्तरेषु वै ॥१४॥
14. cakāra ca tataḥ sṛṣṭiṃ jagataḥ padmasambhavaḥ .
tathā teṣu mahābhāgaḥ pūrvakalpāntareṣu vai.
14. cakāra ca tataḥ sṛṣṭim jagataḥ padmasambhavaḥ
| tathā teṣu mahābhāgaḥ pūrvakalpāntareṣu vai
14. And thereafter, the lotus-born (Brahmā) undertook the creation of the universe. Similarly, that greatly exalted one (Brahmā) did so in previous cycles of creation (kalpas) as well.
देवासुरादीन्मर्त्त्यांश्च पश्वादीन्वृक्षवीरुधः ।
ससर्ज पूर्ववद्ब्रह्मा नरकांश्च महामुने ॥१५॥
15. devāsurādīnmarttyāṃśca paśvādīnvṛkṣavīrudhaḥ .
sasarja pūrvavadbrahmā narakāṃśca mahāmune.
15. devāsurādīn martyān ca paśvādīn vṛkṣavīrudhaḥ
| sasarja pūrvavat brahmā narakān ca mahāmune
15. O great sage, (Brahmā) created gods, asuras, and other such beings, along with mortals, animals, trees, creepers, and also the hells, just as he had done previously.
