मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
क्षुपः खनित्रपुत्रस्तु प्राप्य राज्यं यथा पिता ।
तथैव पालयामास प्रजाधर्मेण रञ्जयन् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
kṣupaḥ khanitraputrastu prāpya rājyaṃ yathā pitā .
tathaiva pālayāmāsa prajādharmeṇa rañjayan.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca kṣupaḥ khanitṛputraḥ tu prāpya rājyam
yathā pitā tathā eva pālayāmāsa prajādharmena rañjayan
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: But Kṣupa, the son of Khanitra, having obtained the kingdom, ruled it just like his father, delighting the subjects by upholding their natural law (dharma).
स दानशीलो यष्टा च यज्ञानामवनीपतिः ।
समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च व्यवहारादिवर्त्मनि ॥२॥
2. sa dānaśīlo yaṣṭā ca yajñānāmavanīpatiḥ .
samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca vyavahārādivartmani.
2. saḥ dānaśīlaḥ yaṣṭā ca yajñānām avanīpatiḥ
samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca vyavahārādivartmani
2. He was generous, a performer of Vedic rituals (yajña), and a king. He was impartial towards both enemies and friends in his administrative conduct.
एकदा स महीपालो निजस्थानगतो मुने ।
सूतैरुक्तो यथा पूर्वं क्षुपो राजा तथाऽभवत् ॥३॥
3. ekadā sa mahīpālo nijasthānagato mune .
sūtairukto yathā pūrvaṃ kṣupo rājā tathā'bhavat.
3. ekadā saḥ mahīpālaḥ nijasthānagataḥ mune sūtaiḥ
uktaḥ yathā pūrvam kṣupaḥ rājā tathā abhavat
3. One day, that king, having retired to his own abode, O sage, was told by his bards about how King Kṣupa had been in a former age.
ब्रह्मणस्तनयः पूर्वं क्षुपोऽभूत्पृथिवीपतिः ।
यादृक्चरितमस्यासीत्तादृक्तस्यैव चेष्टितम् ॥४॥
4. brahmaṇastanayaḥ pūrvaṃ kṣupo'bhūtpṛthivīpatiḥ .
yādṛkcaritamasyāsīttādṛktasyaiva ceṣṭitam.
4. brahmaṇaḥ tanayaḥ pūrvam kṣupaḥ abhūt pṛthivīpatiḥ
yādṛk caritam asya āsīt tādṛk tasya eva ceṣṭitam
4. Formerly, Kṣupa, the son of Brahmā, became a ruler of the earth. Whatever his character (carita) was, such were his actions.
राजोवाच ।
श्रोतुमिच्छामि चरितं क्षुपस्य सुमहात्मनः ।
यदि तादृङ्मया शक्यं चेष्टितुं तत्करोम्यहम् ॥५॥
5. rājovāca .
śrotumicchāmi caritaṃ kṣupasya sumahātmanaḥ .
yadi tādṛṅmayā śakyaṃ ceṣṭituṃ tatkaromyaham.
5. rāja uvāca śrotum icchāmi caritam kṣupasya sumahātmanaḥ
yadi tādṛk mayā śakyam ceṣṭitum tat karomi aham
5. The King said: "I wish to hear the story of the very great soul Kṣupa. If it is possible for me to act in such a way, then I shall do it."
सूता ऊचुः ।
स चकाराकरान्भूप राजा गोब्राह्मणान्पुरा ।
षष्ठांशेन कृता चोर्व्यामिष्टिस्तेन महात्मना ॥६॥
6. sūtā ūcuḥ .
sa cakārākarānbhūpa rājā gobrāhmaṇānpurā .
ṣaṣṭhāṃśena kṛtā corvyāmiṣṭistena mahātmanā.
6. sūtāḥ ūcuḥ sa cakāra akarān bhūpa rājā gobrāhmaṇān
purā ṣaṣṭhāṃśena kṛtā ca urvyām iṣṭiḥ tena mahātmanā
6. sūtāḥ ūcuḥ bhūpa purā sa rājā gobrāhmaṇān akarān
cakāra ca tena mahātmanā ṣaṣṭhāṃśena urvyām iṣṭiḥ kṛtā
6. The Sūtas said: 'O King, that monarch of old made cows and Brahmins exempt from taxes. And by that great-souled one, a Vedic fire ritual (iṣṭi) was performed on Earth using a sixth share (of the kingdom's revenue/produce).
राजोवाच ।
तेषां महात्मनां राज्ञां कोऽनुयास्यति मद्विधः ।
तथाप्युत्कृष्टचेतानां चेष्टासूद्यमवान्भवेत् ॥७॥
7. rājovāca .
teṣāṃ mahātmanāṃ rājñāṃ ko'nuyāsyati madvidhaḥ .
tathāpyutkṛṣṭacetānāṃ ceṣṭāsūdyamavānbhavet.
7. rāja uvāca teṣām mahātmanām rājñām kaḥ anuyāsyati
matvidhaḥ tathā api utkṛṣṭacetānām ceṣṭāsu udyamavān bhavet
7. The King said: "Who, among kings like me, can possibly follow (the example of) those great souls? Nevertheless, one should indeed be diligent in trying to emulate the deeds of those with such exalted minds."
तच्छ्रूयतां प्रतिज्ञा या साम्प्रतं क्रियते मया ।
क्षुपस्यानुकरिष्यामि महाराजस्य चेष्टितम् ॥८॥
8. tacchrūyatāṃ pratijñā yā sāmprataṃ kriyate mayā .
kṣupasyānukariṣyāmi mahārājasya ceṣṭitam.
8. tat śrūyatām pratijñā yā sāmpratam kriyate mayā
kṣupasya anukariṣyāmi mahārājasya ceṣṭitam
8. Therefore, let this vow I am now making be heard: I will emulate the actions of the great king Kṣupa.
त्रींस्त्रीन्यज्ञान्करिष्यामि सस्यापाते गतागते ।
पृथिव्यां चतुरन्तायां प्रतिज्ञेयं कृता मया ॥९॥
9. trīṃstrīnyajñānkariṣyāmi sasyāpāte gatāgate .
pṛthivyāṃ caturantāyāṃ pratijñeyaṃ kṛtā mayā.
9. trīn trīn yajñān kariṣyāmi sasya-āpāte gata-āgate
pṛthivyām catur-antāyām pratijñā iyam kṛtā mayā
9. I will perform three Vedic rituals (yajña) each time, during the sowing and harvesting seasons, throughout this earth that extends to its four boundaries. This is the solemn vow (pratijñā) I have made.
यच्च गोब्राह्मणाः पूर्वमददन्भूभृते करम् ।
तमेव प्रतिदास्यामि ब्राह्मणानां तथा गवाम् ॥१०॥
10. yacca gobrāhmaṇāḥ pūrvamadadanbhūbhṛte karam .
tameva pratidāsyāmi brāhmaṇānāṃ tathā gavām.
10. yat ca go-brāhmaṇāḥ pūrvam adadan bhūbhṛte karam
tam eva pratidāsyāmi brāhmaṇānām tathā gavām
10. And the tax that cows and Brahmins previously gave to the king (bhūbhṛt), that very amount I will return to the Brahmins and to the cows.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति प्रतिज्ञाय वचः क्षुपस्तत्कृतवांस्तथा ।
सस्यापाते स यज्ञांस्त्रीनयजद्यजतांवरः ॥११॥
11. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti pratijñāya vacaḥ kṣupastatkṛtavāṃstathā .
sasyāpāte sa yajñāṃstrīnayajadyajatāṃvaraḥ.
11. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti pratijñāya vacaḥ kṣupaḥ tat kṛtavān
tathā sasya-āpāte saḥ yajñān trīn ayajat yajatām-varaḥ
11. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having made this vow (pratijñā), Kṣupa then acted accordingly. During the sowing and harvesting seasons, he, the best among sacrificers, performed three Vedic rituals (yajña).
गोब्राह्मणाः पुरा राज्ञामददद्यं च वै करम् ।
तावत्संख्यमदाद्वित्तमन्यद्गोब्राह्मणाय सः ॥१२॥
12. gobrāhmaṇāḥ purā rājñāmadadadyaṃ ca vai karam .
tāvatsaṃkhyamadādvittamanyadgobrāhmaṇāya saḥ.
12. go-brāhmaṇāḥ purā rājñām adadan yam ca vai karam
tāvat-saṃkhyam adāt vittam anyat go-brāhmaṇāya saḥ
12. And indeed, the tax that cows and Brahmins formerly gave to kings, he (Kṣupa) gave wealth equal to that amount – other (anya) than the tax itself – to the Brahmins and to the cows.
तस्य पुत्रोऽभवद्वीरः प्रमथायामनिन्दितः ।
यस्य प्रतापशौर्याभ्यां कृता वश्या महीभृतः ॥१३॥
13. tasya putro'bhavadvīraḥ pramathāyāmaninditaḥ .
yasya pratāpaśauryābhyāṃ kṛtā vaśyā mahībhṛtaḥ.
13. tasya putraḥ abhavat vīraḥ pramathāyām aninditaḥ
yasya pratāpaśaurya abhyām kṛtāḥ vaśyāḥ mahībhṛtaḥ
13. To him was born a blameless and heroic son from Pramathā. Through his valor and courage, the kings of the earth were made subservient.
तस्यापि नन्दिनी नाम वैदर्भी दयिताऽभवत् ।
विविंशं तनयं तस्यां जनयामास स प्रभुः ॥१४॥
14. tasyāpi nandinī nāma vaidarbhī dayitā'bhavat .
viviṃśaṃ tanayaṃ tasyāṃ janayāmāsa sa prabhuḥ.
14. tasya api nandinī nāma vaidarbhī dayitā abhavat
viviṃśam tanayam tasyām janayāmāsa sa prabhuḥ
14. He also had a beloved wife named Nandini, a princess from Vidarbha. In her, that lord begot a son named Viviṃśa.
विविंशे शासति महीं महीपाले महौजसि ।
महीतलमभूद्व्याप्तं निरन्तरतया नरैः ॥१५॥
15. viviṃśe śāsati mahīṃ mahīpāle mahaujasi .
mahītalamabhūdvyāptaṃ nirantaratayā naraiḥ.
15. viviṃśe śāsati mahīm mahīpāle mahaujasī
mahītalam abhūt vyāptam nirantaratayā naraiḥ
15. While the powerful king Viviṃśa ruled the earth, the land became densely populated with people.
ववर्ष काले पर्जन्यो मही सस्यवती तथा ।
सुफलानि च सस्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च ॥१६॥
16. vavarṣa kāle parjanyo mahī sasyavatī tathā .
suphalāni ca sasyāni rasavanti phalāni ca.
16. vavarṣa kāle parjanyaḥ mahī sasyavatī tathā
suphalāni ca sasyāni rasavanti phalāni ca
16. The rain god rained at the proper time, and the earth became abundant with crops. Furthermore, the crops bore good yields, and the fruits were juicy and delicious.
रसाः पुष्टिकराश्चासन्पुष्टिर्नोन्मादकारिणी ।
न वित्तनिचया नॄणां प्रभूतां मदहेतवः ॥१७॥
17. rasāḥ puṣṭikarāścāsanpuṣṭirnonmādakāriṇī .
na vittanicayā nṝṇāṃ prabhūtāṃ madahetavaḥ.
17. rasāḥ puṣṭikarāḥ ca āsan puṣṭiḥ na unmādakāriṇī
na vittanicayāḥ nṝṇām prabhūtām madahetavaḥ
17. The nourishing foods were strengthening, and that nourishment did not lead to intoxication. Nor did accumulations of wealth for men greatly cause pride.
तत्प्रतापेन रिपवो भयमापुर्महामुने ।
स्वास्थ्यं जनः सुहृद्वर्गो मुदमाप सुपूजितः ॥१८॥
18. tatpratāpena ripavo bhayamāpurmahāmune .
svāsthyaṃ janaḥ suhṛdvargo mudamāpa supūjitaḥ.
18. tatpratāpena ripavaḥ bhayam āpuḥ mahāmune
svāsthyam janaḥ suhṛdvargaḥ mudam āpa supūjitaḥ
18. O great sage (mahāmuni), by his valor, his enemies experienced fear. The people attained well-being, and his well-honored circle of friends experienced joy.
इष्ट्वा स यज्ञान्सुबहून्सम्यक्सम्पाल्य मेदिनीम् ।
सङ्ग्रामे निधनं प्राप्य शक्रलोकमितो गतः ॥१९॥
19. iṣṭvā sa yajñānsubahūnsamyaksampālya medinīm .
saṅgrāme nidhanaṃ prāpya śakralokamito gataḥ.
19. iṣṭvā saḥ yajñān subahūn samyak sampālya medinīm
saṅgrāme nidhanam prāpya śakralokam itaḥ gataḥ
19. Having performed many (yajña) sacrifices and having properly governed the earth, he attained death in battle and departed from this world to the realm of Indra (Śakra).
