मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
पृषध्राख्यो मनोः पुत्रो मृगयामगमद्वनम् ।
तत्र चंक्रममाणोऽसौ विपिने निर्जने वने ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
pṛṣadhrākhyo manoḥ putro mṛgayāmagamadvanam .
tatra caṃkramamāṇo'sau vipine nirjane vane.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Manu's son, named Pṛṣadhra, went to the forest for hunting. While he was roaming there in the desolate, uninhabited wilderness (vipina) of the forest,
नाससाद मृगं कञ्चिद्भानुदीधितितापितः ।
क्षुत्तृट्तापपरीताङ्गः इतश्चेतश्च चंक्रमन् ॥२॥
2. nāsasāda mṛgaṃ kañcidbhānudīdhititāpitaḥ .
kṣuttṛṭtāpaparītāṅgaḥ itaścetaśca caṃkraman.
2. na asasāda mṛgam kañcit bhānudīdhititāpitaḥ
kṣuttṛṭtāpaparītāṅgaḥ itaḥ cetaḥ ca caṅkraman
2. Tormented by the sun's scorching rays, his body overcome by hunger, thirst, and heat, he wandered here and there but did not find any deer.
स ददर्श तदा तत्र होमधेनुं मनोहराम् ।
लतान्तर्देहछिन्नार्धां ब्राह्मणस्याग्निहोत्रिणः ॥३॥
3. sa dadarśa tadā tatra homadhenuṃ manoharām .
latāntardehachinnārdhāṃ brāhmaṇasyāgnihotriṇaḥ.

latāantardehachinnārdhām brāhmaṇasya agnihotriṇaḥ
3. Then, he saw there a beautiful sacrificial cow (homadhenu) belonging to a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) who maintained the sacred fire. Half of its body was concealed within the creepers.
स मन्यमानो गवयमिषुणा तामताडयत् ।
पपात सापि तद्बाणविभिन्नहृदया भुवि ॥४॥
4. sa manyamāno gavayamiṣuṇā tāmatāḍayat .
papāta sāpi tadbāṇavibhinnahṛdayā bhuvi.
4. sa manyamānaḥ gavayam iṣuṇā tām atāḍayat
papāta sā api tadbāṇavibhinnahṛdayā bhuvi
4. Mistaking it for a wild ox (gavaya), he struck her with an arrow. With her heart pierced by that arrow, she then fell to the ground.
ततोऽग्निहोत्रिणः पुत्रो ब्रह्मचारी तपोरतिः ।
शप्तवान्स पितुर्दृष्ट्वा होमधेनुं निपातिताम् ॥५॥
5. tato'gnihotriṇaḥ putro brahmacārī taporatiḥ .
śaptavānsa piturdṛṣṭvā homadhenuṃ nipātitām.
5. tataḥ agnihotriṇaḥ putraḥ brahmacārī taporatiḥ
śaptavān sa pituḥ dṛṣṭvā homadhenum nipātitām
5. Then, the agnihotrin's son, a celibate student (brahmacārī) devoted to asceticism (tapas), upon seeing his father's sacrificial cow (homadhenu) struck down, pronounced a curse.
गोपालः प्रेषितः पुत्रो बाभ्रव्यो नाम नामतः ।
कोपामर्षपराधीनचित्तवृत्तिस्ततो मुने ॥६॥
6. gopālaḥ preṣitaḥ putro bābhravyo nāma nāmataḥ .
kopāmarṣaparādhīnacittavṛttistato mune.

6. O sage, the son of the cowherd, named Bābhravya, who had been sent, then had his mind's inclination overpowered by anger and indignation.
चुकोप विगलत्स्वेदजललोलाविलेक्षणः ।
तं क्रुद्धं प्रेक्ष्य स नृपः पृषध्रो मुनिदारकम् ॥७॥
7. cukopa vigalatsvedajalalolāvilekṣaṇaḥ .
taṃ kruddhaṃ prekṣya sa nṛpaḥ pṛṣadhro munidārakam.

7. He became angry, his eyes agitated and clouded by streaming sweat. Seeing that angry son of the sage, King Pṛṣadhra...
प्रसीदेति जगौ कस्माच्छूद्रवत्कुरुषे रुषम् ।
न क्षत्रियो न वा वैश्य एवं क्रोधमुपैति वै ॥८॥
8. prasīdeti jagau kasmācchūdravatkuruṣe ruṣam .
na kṣatriyo na vā vaiśya evaṃ krodhamupaiti vai.
8. prasīda iti jagau kasmāt śūdravat kuruṣe ruṣam |
na kṣatriyaḥ na vā vaiśyaḥ evam krodham upaiti vai
8. He pleaded, "Please be gracious! Why do you show anger like a śūdra? Neither a kṣatriya nor a vaiśya ever gets angry in this manner."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति निर्भत्सितस्तेन स राज्ञा मौलिनः सुतः ।
शशाप तं दुरात्मानं शूद्र एव भविष्यसि ॥९॥
9. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti nirbhatsitastena sa rājñā maulinaḥ sutaḥ .
śaśāpa taṃ durātmānaṃ śūdra eva bhaviṣyasi.
9. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | iti nirbhartsitaḥ tena sa rājñā maulinaḥ
sutaḥ | śaśāpa tam durātmānam śūdraḥ eva bhaviṣyasi
9. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Thus rebuked by that king, the son of Maulī cursed that wicked soul: 'You shall indeed become a śūdra!''
प्रयास्यति क्षयं ब्रह्मन्यत्तेऽधीतं गुरोर्मुखात् ।
होमधेनुर्मम गुरोर्यदियं हिंसिता त्वया ॥१०॥
10. prayāsyati kṣayaṃ brahmanyatte'dhītaṃ gurormukhāt .
homadhenurmama guroryadiyaṃ hiṃsitā tvayā.
10. prayāsyati kṣayam brahman yat te adhītam guroḥ
mukhāt homadhenuḥ mama guroḥ yat iyam hiṃsitā tvayā
10. O Brahmin, whatever you have learned from your guru's teachings will perish, because you have harmed this sacrificial cow (homa-dhenu) belonging to my guru.
एवं शप्तो नृपः क्रुद्धस्तच्छापपरिपीडितः ।
प्रतिशापपरो विप्र तोयं जग्राह पाणिना ॥११॥
11. evaṃ śapto nṛpaḥ kruddhastacchāpaparipīḍitaḥ .
pratiśāpaparo vipra toyaṃ jagrāha pāṇinā.
11. evam śaptaḥ nṛpaḥ kruddhaḥ tatśāpaparipīḍitaḥ
pratiśāpaparaḥ vipra toyam jagrāha pāṇinā
11. O Brahmin, thus cursed, the king, enraged and greatly afflicted by that curse, became intent on delivering a counter-curse and took water in his hand.
सोऽपि राज्ञो विनाशाय कोपं चक्रे द्विजोत्तमः ।
तमभ्येत्य त्वरायुक्तो वारयामास वै पिता ॥१२॥
12. so'pi rājño vināśāya kopaṃ cakre dvijottamaḥ .
tamabhyetya tvarāyukto vārayāmāsa vai pitā.
12. saḥ api rājñaḥ vināśāya kopam cakre dvijottamaḥ
tam abhyetya tvarāyuktaḥ vārayāmāsa vai pitā
12. The excellent Brahmin also became enraged, intent on the king's destruction. But his father, approaching him swiftly, indeed restrained him.
वत्सालमलमत्यर्थं कोपेनातीव वैरिणा ।
ऐहिकामुष्मिकहितः शम एव द्विजन्मनाम् ॥१३॥
13. vatsālamalamatyarthaṃ kopenātīva vairiṇā .
aihikāmuṣmikahitaḥ śama eva dvijanmanām.
13. vatsa alam alam atyartham kopena atīva vairiṇā
aihikāmuṣmikahitaḥ śamaḥ eva dvijanmanām
13. O son, stop! Enough of this excessive anger, for it is indeed a great enemy. For the twice-born (dvijanman), only tranquility (śama) brings benefit both in this world and the next.
कोपस्तपो नाशयति क्रुद्धो भ्रश्यत्यथायुषः ।
क्रुद्धस्य गलते ज्ञानं क्रुद्धश्चार्थाच्च हीयते ॥१४॥
14. kopastapo nāśayati kruddho bhraśyatyathāyuṣaḥ .
kruddhasya galate jñānaṃ kruddhaścārthācca hīyate.
14. kopaḥ tapaḥ nāśayati kruddhaḥ bhraśyati atha āyuṣaḥ
kruddhasya galate jñānam kruddhaḥ ca arthāt ca hīyate
14. Anger destroys asceticism (tapas). An angry person loses their lifespan, their knowledge declines, and they are deprived of wealth and purpose.
न धर्मः क्रोधशीलस्य नार्थं चाप्नोति रोषणः ।
नालं सुखाय कामास्ति कोपेनाविष्टचेतसाम् ॥१५॥
15. na dharmaḥ krodhaśīlasya nārthaṃ cāpnoti roṣaṇaḥ .
nālaṃ sukhāya kāmāsti kopenāviṣṭacetasām.
15. na dharmaḥ krodhaśīlasya na artham ca āpnoti roṣaṇaḥ
na alam sukhāya kāmaḥ asti kopena āviṣṭacetasām
15. There is no virtue (dharma) for one who is prone to anger. An angry person does not attain wealth or purpose, and for those whose minds are possessed by anger, there is no sufficient happiness or gratification of desires.
यदि राज्ञा हता धेनुरियं विज्ञानिना सता ।
युक्तमत्र दयां कर्तुमात्मनो हितबोधिना ॥१६॥
16. yadi rājñā hatā dhenuriyaṃ vijñāninā satā .
yuktamatra dayāṃ kartumātmano hitabodhinā.
16. yadi rājñā hatā dhenuḥ iyam vijñāninā satā
yuktam atra dayām kartum ātmanaḥ hitabodhinā
16. If this cow was killed by a king who is truly wise, then it is proper to show mercy in this situation, for one who understands one's own benefit.
अथवाऽजानता धेनुरियं व्यापादिता मम ।
तत्कथं शापयोग्योऽयं दुष्टं नास्य मनो यतः ॥१७॥
17. athavā'jānatā dhenuriyaṃ vyāpāditā mama .
tatkathaṃ śāpayogyo'yaṃ duṣṭaṃ nāsya mano yataḥ.
17. athavā ajānatā dhenuḥ iyam vyāpāditā mama tat
katham śāpayogyaḥ ayam duṣṭam na asya manaḥ yataḥ
17. Or perhaps this cow was killed by me unknowingly. If that is the case, then how can I be worthy of a curse, since my mind was not malicious?
आत्मनो हितमन्विच्छन्बाधते योऽपरं नरः ।
कर्तव्या मूढविज्ञाने दया तत्र दयालुभिः ॥१८॥
18. ātmano hitamanvicchanbādhate yo'paraṃ naraḥ .
kartavyā mūḍhavijñāne dayā tatra dayālubhiḥ.
18. ātmanaḥ hitam anvicchan bādhate yaḥ aparam naraḥ
kartavyā mūḍhavijñāne dayā tatra dayālubhiḥ
18. A person who, desiring his own welfare (ātman), harms another, should be shown compassion by compassionate individuals, for his understanding is deluded.
अज्ञानतः कृते दण्डं पातयन्ति बुधा यदि ।
बुधेभ्यस्तमहं मन्ये वरमज्ञानिनो नराः ॥१९॥
19. ajñānataḥ kṛte daṇḍaṃ pātayanti budhā yadi .
budhebhyastamahaṃ manye varamajñānino narāḥ.
19. ajñānataḥ kṛte daṇḍam pātayanti budhāḥ yadi
budhebhyaḥ tam aham manye varam ajñāninaḥ narāḥ
19. If the wise inflict punishment for actions performed out of ignorance, then I consider that ignorant individual to be better than those wise ones. Indeed, ignorant people (in such a case) are preferable.
नाद्य शापस्त्वया देयः पार्थिवस्यास्य पुत्रक ।
स्वकर्मणैव पतिता गौरेषा दुःखमृत्युना ॥२०॥
20. nādya śāpastvayā deyaḥ pārthivasyāsya putraka .
svakarmaṇaiva patitā gaureṣā duḥkhamṛtyunā.
20. na adya śāpaḥ tvayā deyaḥ pārthivasya asya putraka
svakarmaṇā eva patitā gauḥ eṣā duḥkhamṛtyunā
20. O son, you should not utter a curse today on this king's son. This cow has indeed perished by her own action (karma) through a painful death.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
पृषध्रोऽपि मुनेः पुत्रं प्रणम्यानम्रकन्धरः ।
प्रसीदेति जगादोच्चैरज्ञानाद्घातितेति च ॥२१॥
21. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
pṛṣadhro'pi muneḥ putraṃ praṇamyānamrakandharaḥ .
prasīdeti jagādoccairajñānādghātiteti ca.
21. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca pṛṣadhraḥ api muneḥ putram praṇamya
anamrakandharaḥ prasīda iti jagāda uccaiḥ ajñānāt ghātitā iti ca
21. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Pṛṣadhra, with his neck bowed, also prostrated before the sage's son and cried loudly, 'Please be gracious! She was killed out of ignorance.'
मया गवयबुद्ध्या गौरवध्या घातिता मुने ।
अज्ञानाद्धोमधेनुस्ते प्रसीद त्वं च नो मुने ॥२२॥
22. mayā gavayabuddhyā gauravadhyā ghātitā mune .
ajñānāddhomadhenuste prasīda tvaṃ ca no mune.
22. mayā gavayabuddhyā gauḥ avadhyā ghātitā mune |
ajñānāt homadhenuḥ te prasīda tvaṃ ca naḥ mune
22. O sage, I killed your sacrificial cow (homadhenu), which should not be slain, mistakenly thinking it was a wild ox. Please be appeased and forgive us for this act of ignorance.
ऋषिपुत्र उवाच ।
आजन्मनो महीपाल न मया व्याहतं मृषा ।
क्रोधश्चाद्य महाभाग नान्यथा मे कदाचन ॥२३॥
23. ṛṣiputra uvāca .
ājanmano mahīpāla na mayā vyāhataṃ mṛṣā .
krodhaścādya mahābhāga nānyathā me kadācana.
23. ṛṣiputraḥ uvāca | ājanmanaḥ mahīpāla na mayā vyāhatam
mṛṣā | krodhaḥ ca adya mahābhāga na anyathā me kadācana
23. The sage's son said: 'O King, never since my birth have I spoken falsely. And today, O highly fortunate one, my anger is not unjustified; it has never been otherwise.'
तन्नाहमेनं शक्नोमि शापं कर्तुं नृपान्न्यथा ।
यस्ते समुद्यतः शापो द्वितीयः स निवर्तितः ॥२४॥
24. tannāhamenaṃ śaknomi śāpaṃ kartuṃ nṛpānnyathā .
yaste samudyataḥ śāpo dvitīyaḥ sa nivartitaḥ.
24. tat na aham enam śaknomi śāpam kartum nṛpāt anyathā
| yaḥ te samudyataḥ śāpaḥ dvitīyaḥ saḥ nivartitaḥ
24. Therefore, I cannot inflict a curse upon him other than what is appropriate for kings. However, the second curse, which was intended for you, has been revoked.
इत्युक्तवन्तं तं बालमादाय स पिता ततः ।
जगाम स्वाश्रमं सोऽपि पृषध्रः शूद्रतामगात् ॥२५॥
25. ityuktavantaṃ taṃ bālamādāya sa pitā tataḥ .
jagāma svāśramaṃ so'pi pṛṣadhraḥ śūdratāmagāt.
25. iti uktavantam tam bālam ādāya saḥ pitā tataḥ |
jagāma sva-āśramam saḥ api pṛṣadhraḥ śūdratām agāt
25. After the boy had thus spoken, his father then took him and went to his own hermitage. And Pṛṣadhra, for his part, attained the status of a śūdra.
