मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः स्वतेजसस्तस्मादाविर्भूतो विभावसुः ।
अदृश्यत तदादित्यस्तप्तताम्रोपमप्रभः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ svatejasastasmādāvirbhūto vibhāvasuḥ .
adṛśyata tadādityastaptatāmropamaprabhaḥ.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, from his own splendor, the resplendent Sun (Vibhāvasu) appeared. The Sun god (Āditya) was then seen, glowing with a luster like heated copper.
अथ तां प्रणतां देवीं तस्य संदर्शनान्मुने ।
प्राह भास्वन्वृणुष्वेष्टवरं मत्तो यमिच्छसि ॥२॥
2. atha tāṃ praṇatāṃ devīṃ tasya saṃdarśanānmune .
prāha bhāsvanvṛṇuṣveṣṭavaraṃ matto yamicchasi.
2. atha tām praṇatām devīm tasya saṃdarśanāt mune
prāha bhāsvan vṛṇuṣva iṣṭavaram mattaḥ yam icchasi
2. O sage (Mārkaṇḍeya), then, upon seeing him, the resplendent (Sun god) said to that prostrate goddess: "Ask from me any desired boon you wish."
प्रणता शिरसा सा च जानुपीडितमेदिनी ।
प्रत्युवाच विवस्वन्तं वरदं समुपस्थितम् ॥३॥
3. praṇatā śirasā sā ca jānupīḍitamedinī .
pratyuvāca vivasvantaṃ varadaṃ samupasthitam.

pratyuvāca vivasvantam varadam samupasthitam
3. And she, bowing her head and pressing the earth with her knees, replied to Vivasvān (the Sun god), the boon-giver who was present before her.
देव प्रसीद पुत्राणां हृतं त्रिभुवनं मम ।
यज्ञभागाश्च दैत्यैश्च दानवैश्च बलाधिकैः ॥४॥
4. deva prasīda putrāṇāṃ hṛtaṃ tribhuvanaṃ mama .
yajñabhāgāśca daityaiśca dānavaiśca balādhikaiḥ.
4. deva prasīda putrāṇām hṛtam tribhuvanam mama
yajñabhāgāḥ ca daityaiḥ ca dānavaiḥ ca balādhikaiḥ
4. “O God, be gracious! My sons' three worlds and their shares of the sacrificial offerings (yajña-bhāgas) have been seized by the Daityas and the more powerful Dānavas.”
तन्निमित्तं प्रसादं त्वं कुरुष्व मम गोपते ।
अंशेन तेषां भ्रातृत्वं गत्वा नाशय तद्रिपून् ॥५॥
5. tannimittaṃ prasādaṃ tvaṃ kuruṣva mama gopate .
aṃśena teṣāṃ bhrātṛtvaṃ gatvā nāśaya tadripūn.
5. tat-nimittam prasādam tvam kuruṣva mama gopate
aṃśena teṣām bhrātṛtvam gatvā nāśaya tat-ripūn
5. Therefore, O protector, please show me your grace. By taking a part (of yourself) and becoming a brother to them, go and destroy their enemies.
यथा मे तनया भूयो यज्ञभागभुजः प्रभो ।
भवेयुरधिपाश्चैव त्रैलोक्यस्य दिवाकर ॥६॥
6. yathā me tanayā bhūyo yajñabhāgabhujaḥ prabho .
bhaveyuradhipāścaiva trailokyasya divākara.
6. yathā me tanayā bhūyaḥ yajña-bhāga-bhujaḥ prabho
| bhaveyuḥ adhipāḥ ca eva trailokyasya divākara
6. So that, O Lord, O Sun (divākara), my sons may again become partakers of sacrificial offerings (yajña) and indeed masters of the three worlds.
तथानुकम्पां पुत्राणां सुप्रसन्नो रवे मम ।
कुरु प्रपन्नार्तिहर स्थितिकर्त्ता त्वमुच्यसे ॥७॥
7. tathānukampāṃ putrāṇāṃ suprasanno rave mama .
kuru prapannārtihara sthitikarttā tvamucyase.
7. tathā anukampām putrāṇām su-prasannaḥ rave mama |
kuru prapanna-ārti-hara sthiti-karttā tvam ucyase
7. O Sun (rave), pleased with me, please show compassion to my sons. O remover of the distress of those who take refuge, you are indeed said to be the maintainer of order.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तामाह भगवान्भास्करो वारितस्करः ।
प्रणतामदितिं विप्र प्रसादसुमुखो विभुः ॥८॥
8. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tatastāmāha bhagavānbhāskaro vāritaskaraḥ .
praṇatāmaditiṃ vipra prasādasumukho vibhuḥ.
8. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca | tataḥ tām āha bhagavān bhāskaraḥ
vāri-taskaraḥ | praṇatām aditim vipra prasāda-su-mukhaḥ vibhuḥ
8. Mārkaṇḍeya said: O Brahmin, thereafter, the venerable Sun (bhāskara), the water-thief, the mighty Lord whose face was gracious, then spoke to Aditi, who had bowed down.
सहस्रांशेन ते गर्भे सम्भूयाहमशेषतः ।
त्वत्पुत्रशत्रूनदिते नाशयाम्याशु निर्वृतः ॥९॥
9. sahasrāṃśena te garbhe sambhūyāhamaśeṣataḥ .
tvatputraśatrūnadite nāśayāmyāśu nirvṛtaḥ.
9. sahasrāṃśena te garbhe sambhūya aham aśeṣataḥ
| tvatputraśatrūn adite nāśayāmi āśu nirvṛtaḥ
9. O Aditi, having completely manifested in your womb with all my inherent power/radiance, I will quickly destroy the enemies of your sons, feeling utterly contented.
इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्भास्वानन्तर्द्धानमुपागमत् ।
निवृत्ता सापि तपसः संतृप्ताखिलवाञ्छिता ॥१०॥
10. ityuktvā bhagavānbhāsvānantarddhānamupāgamat .
nivṛttā sāpi tapasaḥ saṃtṛptākhilavāñchitā.
10. iti uktvā bhagavān bhāsvān antarddhānam upāgamat
| nivṛttā sā api tapasaḥ santṛptākhilavāñchitā
10. Having said this, the divine and resplendent Sun God disappeared. She (Aditi) also ceased her penance (tapas), her every desire completely fulfilled.
ततो रश्मिसहस्रात्तु सौषुम्नाख्यो रवेः करः ।
विप्रावतारं संचक्रे देवमातुरथोदरे ॥११॥
11. tato raśmisahasrāttu sauṣumnākhyo raveḥ karaḥ .
viprāvatāraṃ saṃcakre devamāturathodare.
11. tataḥ raśmisahasrāt tu sauṣumna ākhyaḥ raveḥ karaḥ
| vipra avatāram saṃcakre devamātuḥ atha udare
11. Then, indeed, from the Sun's thousand rays, the ray named Sauṣumna, made an incarnation (avatāra) as a Brahmin in the womb of the mother of the gods (Aditi).
कृच्छ्रचान्द्रायणादीनि सा च चक्रे समाहिता ।
शुचिः संधारयामास दिव्यं गर्भमिति द्विज ॥१२॥
12. kṛcchracāndrāyaṇādīni sā ca cakre samāhitā .
śuciḥ saṃdhārayāmāsa divyaṃ garbhamiti dvija.
12. kṛcchracāndrāyaṇādīni sā ca cakre samāhitā |
śuciḥ saṃdhārayāmāsa divyam garbham iti dvija
12. And she, pure and concentrated, performed severe austerities like the Cāndrāyaṇa (penance) and others. Thus, O Brahmin (dvija), she bore the divine fetus.
ततस्तां कश्यपः प्राह किञ्चित्कोपप्लुताक्षरम् ।
किं मारयसि गर्भाण्डमिति नित्योपवासिनी ॥१३॥
13. tatastāṃ kaśyapaḥ prāha kiñcitkopaplutākṣaram .
kiṃ mārayasi garbhāṇḍamiti nityopavāsinī.
13. tataḥ tām kaśyapaḥ prāha kiñcitkopaplutākṣaram
kim mārayasi garbhāṇḍam iti nityopavāsinī
13. Then Kaśyapa said to her, his words somewhat blurred by anger, "Why are you destroying the embryo, O constant faster?"
सा च तं प्राह गर्भाण्डमेतत्पश्येति कोपना ।
न मारितं विपक्षाणां मृत्यवे तद्भविष्यति ॥१४॥
14. sā ca taṃ prāha garbhāṇḍametatpaśyeti kopanā .
na māritaṃ vipakṣāṇāṃ mṛtyave tadbhaviṣyati.
14. sā ca tam prāha garbhāṇḍam etat paśya iti kopanā
na māritam vipakṣāṇām mṛtyave tat bhaviṣyati
14. And she, the angry one, said to him, "See this embryo! It has not been destroyed. Rather, it will be for the destruction of the enemies."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा तं तदा गर्भमुत्ससर्ज्ज सुरारणिः ।
जाज्वल्यमानं तेजोभिः पत्युर्वचनकोपिता ॥१५॥
15. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityuktvā taṃ tadā garbhamutsasarjja surāraṇiḥ .
jājvalyamānaṃ tejobhiḥ patyurvacanakopitā.
15. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti uktvā tam tadā garbham utsasarja
surāraṇiḥ jājvalyamānam tejobhiḥ patyuḥ vacanakopitā
15. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Having spoken thus, the divine mother (Diti), angered by her husband's words, then ejected that embryo, which was blazing with splendor."
तं दृष्ट्वा कश्यपो गर्भमुद्यद्भास्करवर्च्चसम् ।
तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा ऋग्भिराद्याभिरादरात् ॥१६॥
16. taṃ dṛṣṭvā kaśyapo garbhamudyadbhāskaravarccasam .
tuṣṭāva praṇato bhūtvā ṛgbhirādyābhirādarāt.
16. tam dṛṣṭvā kaśyapaḥ garbham udyadbhāskaravarccasam
tuṣṭāva praṇataḥ bhūtvā ṛgbhiḥ ādyābhiḥ ādarāt
16. Having seen that embryo, which shone with the brilliance of the rising sun, Kaśyapa, bowing respectfully, praised it with primeval hymns.
संस्तूयमानः स तदा गर्भाण्डात्प्रकटोऽभवत् ।
पद्मपत्रसवर्णाभस्तेजसा व्याप्तदिङ्मुखः ॥१७॥
17. saṃstūyamānaḥ sa tadā garbhāṇḍātprakaṭo'bhavat .
padmapatrasavarṇābhastejasā vyāptadiṅmukhaḥ.
17. saṃstūyamānaḥ saḥ tadā garbhāṇḍāt prakaṭaḥ abhavat
| padmapatrasavarṇābhaḥ tejasā vyāptadiṅmukhaḥ
17. Then, as he was being praised, he manifested from the cosmic egg. He had the radiant complexion of a lotus petal and his splendor filled all directions.
अथान्तरिक्षादाभाष्य कश्यपं मुनिसत्तमम् ।
सतोयमेघगम्भीरवागुवाचाशरीरिणी ॥१८॥
18. athāntarikṣādābhāṣya kaśyapaṃ munisattamam .
satoyameghagambhīravāguvācāśarīriṇī.
18. atha antarikṣāt ābhāṣya kaśyapam munisattamam
| satoyameghagambhīra vāk uvāca aśarīriṇī
18. Then, from the sky, a bodiless voice, deep as a rain-laden cloud, addressed Kaśyapa, the foremost among sages.
मारितं ते यतः प्रोक्तमेतदण्डं त्वया मुने ।
तस्मान्मुने सुतस्तेऽयं मार्त्तण्डाख्यो भविष्यति ॥१९॥
19. māritaṃ te yataḥ proktametadaṇḍaṃ tvayā mune .
tasmānmune sutaste'yaṃ mārttaṇḍākhyo bhaviṣyati.
19. māritam te yataḥ proktam etat aṇḍam tvayā mune |
tasmāt mune sutaḥ te ayam mārttaṇḍākhyaḥ bhaviṣyati
19. Since this egg was declared 'dead' by you, O sage, therefore, this son of yours will be known by the name Mārttaṇḍa.
सूर्याधिकारं च विभुर्जगत्येष करिष्यति ।
हनिष्यत्यसुरांश्चायं यज्ञभागहरानरीन् ॥२०॥
20. sūryādhikāraṃ ca vibhurjagatyeṣa kariṣyati .
haniṣyatyasurāṃścāyaṃ yajñabhāgaharānarīn.
20. sūryādhikāram ca vibhuḥ jagati eṣa kariṣyati
haniṣyati asurān ca ayam yajñabhāgaharān arīn
20. eṣaḥ vibhuḥ jagati sūryādhikāram ca kariṣyati
ayam ca asurān yajñabhāgaharān arīn haniṣyati
20. And this powerful one (eṣa vibhuḥ) will assume the authority of Sūrya in the world. This one (ayam) will also destroy the asuras, who are the enemies that steal the shares of Vedic rituals (yajña).
देवा निशम्येति वचो गगनात्समुपागमन् ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं याता दानवाश्च हतौजसः ॥२१॥
21. devā niśamyeti vaco gaganātsamupāgaman .
praharṣamatulaṃ yātā dānavāśca hataujasaḥ.
21. devāḥ niśamya iti vacaḥ gaganāt samupāgaman
praharṣam atulam yātāḥ dānavāḥ ca hataujasaḥ
21. Having heard these words from the sky, the gods came forth. And the demons, whose might had been destroyed, attained incomparable joy.
ततो युद्धाय दैतेयानाजुहाव शतक्रतुः ।
सह देवैर्मुदा युक्तो दानवाश्च समभ्ययुः ॥२२॥
22. tato yuddhāya daiteyānājuhāva śatakratuḥ .
saha devairmudā yukto dānavāśca samabhyayuḥ.
22. tataḥ yuddhāya daiteyān ājuhāva śatakratuḥ
saha devaiḥ mudā yuktaḥ dānavāḥ ca samabhyayuḥ
22. Then Indra (Śatakratu), filled with joy and accompanied by the gods, challenged the Daityas to battle. The demons, too, advanced.
तेषां युद्धमभूद्घोरं देवानामसुरैः सह ।
शस्त्रास्त्रदीप्तिसंदीप्तं समस्तभुवनान्तरम् ॥२३॥
23. teṣāṃ yuddhamabhūdghoraṃ devānāmasuraiḥ saha .
śastrāstradīptisaṃdīptaṃ samastabhuvanāntaram.
23. teṣām yuddham abhūt ghoram devānām asuraiḥ saha
śastrāstradīptisaṃdīptam samastabhuvanāntaram
23. A terrible battle ensued between them, the gods and the Asuras. It was ablaze with the radiance of weapons and missiles, engulfing the entire universe.
तस्मिन्युद्धे भगवता मार्त्तण्डेन निरीक्षिताः ।
तेजसा दह्यमानास्ते भस्मीभूता महासुराः ॥२४॥
24. tasminyuddhe bhagavatā mārttaṇḍena nirīkṣitāḥ .
tejasā dahyamānāste bhasmībhūtā mahāsurāḥ.
24. tasmin yuddhe bhagavatā mārttaṇḍena nirīkṣitāḥ
tejasā dahyamānāḥ te bhasmībhūtāḥ mahāsurāḥ
24. In that battle, the great demons, as they were beheld by the divine Mārtaṇḍa (the Sun-god), were burned by his fiery energy and reduced to ashes.
ततः प्रहर्षमतुलं प्राप्ताः सर्वे दिवौकसः ।
तुष्टुवुस्तेजसा योनिं मार्त्तण्डमदितिं तथा ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ praharṣamatulaṃ prāptāḥ sarve divaukasaḥ .
tuṣṭuvustejasā yoniṃ mārttaṇḍamaditiṃ tathā.
25. tataḥ praharṣam atulam prāptāḥ sarve divaukasaḥ
tuṣṭuvuḥ tejasā yonim mārttaṇḍam aditim tathā
25. Then all the gods attained incomparable joy. With their splendor, they praised Martanda and Aditi, the very origin (yoni).
स्वाधिकारांस्तथा प्राप्ता यज्ञभागांश्च पूर्ववत् ।
भगवानपि मार्तण्डः स्वाधिकारमथाकरोत् ॥२६॥
26. svādhikārāṃstathā prāptā yajñabhāgāṃśca pūrvavat .
bhagavānapi mārtaṇḍaḥ svādhikāramathākarot.
26. sva-adhikārān tathā prāptā yajña-bhāgān ca pūrvavat
bhagavān api mārtaṇḍaḥ sva-adhikāram atha akarot
26. bhagavān mārtaṇḍaḥ api pūrvavat sva-adhikārān
yajña-bhāgān ca prāptā atha sva-adhikāram akarot
26. Just as before, having received his own assigned duties and shares from the Vedic rituals (yajña), the venerable Sun God (Mārtaṇḍa) then also carried out his specific function.
कदम्बपुष्पवद्भास्वानधश्चोर्ध्वं च रश्मिभिः ।
वृत्ताग्निपिण्डसदृशो दध्रे नातिस्फुरद्वपुः ॥२७॥
27. kadambapuṣpavadbhāsvānadhaścordhvaṃ ca raśmibhiḥ .
vṛttāgnipiṇḍasadṛśo dadhre nātisphuradvapuḥ.
27. kadambapuṣpavat bhāsvān adhaḥ ca ūrdhvam ca raśmibhiḥ
vṛttāgnipiṇḍasadṛśaḥ dadhre na atisphurat vapuḥ
27. The brilliant Martanda, like a Kadamba flower, shone with rays extending downwards and upwards. He appeared like a spherical mass of fire, his form not excessively flickering.
