मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति तस्या वचः श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्य स च पार्थिवः ।
पुनः प्रोवाच धर्मज्ञस्तां पत्नीं तनयं तथा ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā putrasya sa ca pārthivaḥ .
punaḥ provāca dharmajñastāṃ patnīṃ tanayaṃ tathā.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having thus heard the words of her son, that king, who was a knower of natural law (dharma), spoke again to his wife and also to his son.
यन्मया पितुरादेशात्त्यक्तं राज्यं न तत्पुनः ।
ग्रहीष्यामि वृथोक्तेन किमात्मा क्लिश्यते त्वया ॥२॥
2. yanmayā piturādeśāttyaktaṃ rājyaṃ na tatpunaḥ .
grahīṣyāmi vṛthoktena kimātmā kliśyate tvayā.
2. yat mayā pituḥ ādeśāt tyaktam rājyam na tat punaḥ
grahīṣyāmi vṛthā uktena kim ātmā kliśyate tvayā
2. I will not take back that kingdom which I abandoned by my father's command. Why is your self (ātman) being troubled by such useless talk?
अहं ते सम्प्रदास्यामि करं वैश्यव्रते स्थितः ।
भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यमशेषं त्वमिच्छया वा परित्यज ॥३॥
3. ahaṃ te sampradāsyāmi karaṃ vaiśyavrate sthitaḥ .
bhuṅkṣva rājyamaśeṣaṃ tvamicchayā vā parityaja.
3. aham te sampradāsyāmi karam vaiśyavrate sthitaḥ
bhuṅkṣva rājyam aśeṣam tvam icchayā vā parityaja
3. While I remain in the duties (vrata) of a Vaiśya, I will give you tribute. You may rule the entire kingdom, or abandon it according to your will.
इत्युक्तः स तदा पित्रा राजपुत्रो भलनन्दनः ।
चकार राज्यं धर्मेण तद्वद्दारपरिग्रहम् ॥४॥
4. ityuktaḥ sa tadā pitrā rājaputro bhalanandanaḥ .
cakāra rājyaṃ dharmeṇa tadvaddāraparigraham.
4. iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā pitrā rājaputraḥ bhalanandanaḥ
cakāra rājyam dharmeṇa tadvat dāraparigraham
4. Thus addressed by his father, that prince Bhalanandana then ruled the kingdom in accordance with natural law (dharma) and likewise undertook marriage.
अव्याहतं तस्य चक्रं पृथिव्यामभवद्द्विज ।
न चाधर्मे मनो भूपास्तस्य सर्वेऽभवन्वशे ॥५॥
5. avyāhataṃ tasya cakraṃ pṛthivyāmabhavaddvija .
na cādharme mano bhūpāstasya sarve'bhavanvaśe.
5. avyāhatam tasya cakram pṛthivyām abhavat dvija | na
ca adharme manaḥ bhūpāḥ tasya sarve abhavan vaśe
5. O twice-born (dvija), his dominion (cakra) was irresistible throughout the earth. And all kings became subservient to him, their minds not inclining towards unrighteousness (adharma).
तेनेष्टो विधिवद्यज्ञः सम्यक्शास्ति वसुन्धराम् ।
स एवैकोऽभवद्भर्त्ता पृथिव्यामरिशासनः ॥६॥
6. teneṣṭo vidhivadyajñaḥ samyakśāsti vasundharām .
sa evaiko'bhavadbharttā pṛthivyāmariśāsanaḥ.
6. tena iṣṭaḥ vidhivat yajñaḥ samyak śāsti vasundharām
saḥ eva ekaḥ abhavat bharttā pṛthivyām ariśāsanaḥ
6. tena yajñaḥ vidhivat iṣṭaḥ
(abhūta) (saḥ) vasundharām samyak
śāsti (ca) saḥ eva ekaḥ ariśāsanaḥ
pṛthivyām bharttā abhavat
6. By him, the Vedic ritual (yajña) was duly performed, and he properly governs the earth. He alone became the sole ruler on earth, the vanquisher of foes.
अजायत सुतस्तस्य वत्सप्रीरिति नामतः ।
पितातिशयितो येन गुणौघेन महात्मना ॥७॥
7. ajāyata sutastasya vatsaprīriti nāmataḥ .
pitātiśayito yena guṇaughena mahātmanā.
7. ajāyata sutaḥ tasya vatsaprīḥ iti nāmataḥ
| pitā atiśayitaḥ yena guṇaughena mahātmanā
7. A son named Vatsapri was born to him. By this great-souled (mahātman) one, his father was surpassed in a multitude of virtues.
तस्यापि भार्या सौनन्दा विदूरथसुताऽभवत् ।
पतिव्रता महाभागा सा प्राप्ता तेन शौर्यतः ।
हत्वा पुरन्दररिपुं कुजंभं दितिजेश्वरम् ॥८॥
8. tasyāpi bhāryā saunandā vidūrathasutā'bhavat .
pativratā mahābhāgā sā prāptā tena śauryataḥ .
hatvā purandararipuṃ kujaṃbhaṃ ditijeśvaram.
8. tasya api bhāryā saunandā vidūrathasutā
abhavat | pativratā mahābhāgā
sā prāptā tena śauryataḥ | hatvā
purandararipum kujambham ditijeśvaram
8. His wife also was Saunanda, the daughter of Vidūratha. She was a chaste (pativratā) and greatly fortunate woman. He obtained her through his valor, having killed Kujambha, the enemy of Purandara (Indra) and lord of the Daityas.
क्रौष्टुकिरुवाच ।
भगवंस्तेन सम्प्राप्ता कुजृंभनिधनात्कथम् ।
एतदाख्यानमाख्याहि प्रसन्नेनान्तरात्मना ॥९॥
9. krauṣṭukiruvāca .
bhagavaṃstena samprāptā kujṛṃbhanidhanātkatham .
etadākhyānamākhyāhi prasannenāntarātmanā.
9. krauṣṭukiḥ uvāca bhagavan tena samprāptā kujṛmbhanidhanāt
katham etat ākhyānam ākhyāhi prasannena antarātmanā
9. Krauṣṭuki said: 'O revered sir, how was that attained through the slaying of Kujṛmbha? Please narrate this tale with a serene inner self (antarātman).'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
विदूरथोनाम नृपः ख्यातकीर्तिरभूद्भुवि ।
तस्य पुत्रद्वयं जातं सुनीतिः सुमतिस्तथा ॥१०॥
10. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
vidūrathonāma nṛpaḥ khyātakīrtirabhūdbhuvi .
tasya putradvayaṃ jātaṃ sunītiḥ sumatistathā.
10. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca vidūrathaḥ nāma nṛpaḥ khyātakīrtiḥ
abhūt bhuvi tasya putradvayam jātam sunītiḥ sumatiḥ tathā
10. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'There was a king on earth named Vidūratha, who possessed widespread fame. To him were born two sons, Sunīti and Sumati.'
एकदा तु वनं यातो मृगयां स विदूरथः ।
ददर्श गर्तं सुमहद्भूमेर्मुखमिवोद्गतम् ॥११॥
11. ekadā tu vanaṃ yāto mṛgayāṃ sa vidūrathaḥ .
dadarśa gartaṃ sumahadbhūmermukhamivodgatam.
11. ekadā tu vanam yātaḥ mṛgayām saḥ vidūrathaḥ
dadarśa gartam sumahat bhūmeḥ mukham iva udgatam
11. One day, King Vidūratha went to the forest for a hunt. He saw an enormous pit, which looked as though it were the mouth of the earth gaping open.
तं दृष्ट्वा चिन्तयामास किमेतदिति भैरवम् ।
पातालविवरं मन्ये नैतद्मूमेश्चिरन्तनम् ॥१२॥
12. taṃ dṛṣṭvā cintayāmāsa kimetaditi bhairavam .
pātālavivaraṃ manye naitadmūmeścirantanam.
12. tam dṛṣṭvā cintayāmāsa kim etat iti bhairavam
pātālavivaram manye na etat bhūmeḥ cirantanam
12. Upon seeing that, he pondered, 'What is this dreadful sight? I believe this is an opening to the netherworld (pātāla), and not merely an ancient feature of the earth.'
चिन्तयन्निति तत्रासौ ददर्श विजने वने ।
ब्राह्मणं सुव्रतं नाम तपस्विनमुपागतम् ॥१३॥
13. cintayanniti tatrāsau dadarśa vijane vane .
brāhmaṇaṃ suvrataṃ nāma tapasvinamupāgatam.
13. cintayan iti tatra asau dadarśa vijane vane
brāhmaṇam suvrataṃ nāma tapasvinam upāgatam
13. Thinking thus, he saw there, in a secluded forest, an ascetic named Suvrata who had come near.
स तं पप्रच्छ च नृपः किमेतदिति विस्मितः ।
अतिगम्भीरमवनेर्दर्शितान्तर्गतोदरम् ॥१४॥
14. sa taṃ papraccha ca nṛpaḥ kimetaditi vismitaḥ .
atigambhīramavanerdarśitāntargatodaram.
14. sa taṃ papraccha ca nṛpaḥ kim etat iti vismitaḥ
atigambhīram avaneḥ darśita-antargata-udaram
14. And the king, astonished, asked him, "What is this?" (referring to that which was) very deep and revealed the internal cavity of the earth.
ऋषिरुवाच ।
किन्न वेत्सि महीपाल वागर्थस्त्वं हि मे मतः ।
ज्ञेयं सर्वं नरेन्द्रेण वर्तते यन्महीतले ॥१५॥
15. ṛṣiruvāca .
kinna vetsi mahīpāla vāgarthastvaṃ hi me mataḥ .
jñeyaṃ sarvaṃ narendreṇa vartate yanmahītale.
15. ṛṣiḥ uvāca kim na vetsi mahīpāla vāk arthaḥ tvam hi me
mataḥ jñeyam sarvam narendreṇa vartate yat mahītale
15. The sage said: "O protector of the earth, do you not know? You are indeed considered by me to be the essence of speech. Everything that exists on the earth should be known by a king."
दानवः सुमहावीर्यो वसत्युग्रो रसातले ।
स जृम्भयति यत्पृथ्वीं कुजृम्भः प्रोच्यते ततः ॥१६॥
16. dānavaḥ sumahāvīryo vasatyugro rasātale .
sa jṛmbhayati yatpṛthvīṃ kujṛmbhaḥ procyate tataḥ.
16. dānavaḥ sumahāvīryaḥ vasati ugraḥ rasātale saḥ
jṛmbhayati yat pṛthvīm kujṛmbhaḥ procyate tataḥ
16. A fierce, exceedingly powerful demon lives in Rasatala. Because he causes the earth to shake, he is therefore called Kujṛmbha.
क्रियते तेन यत्किञ्चिद्रत्नभूतं महीतले ।
त्रिदिवे वा नरपते तं कथं वेत्ति नो भवान् ॥१७॥
17. kriyate tena yatkiñcidratnabhūtaṃ mahītale .
tridive vā narapate taṃ kathaṃ vetti no bhavān.
17. kriyate tena yatkiñcit ratnabhūtam mahītale
tridive vā narapate tam kathaṃ vetti na bhavān
17. O king, how is it that you do not know him, considering whatever precious thing exists, created by him, whether on earth or in heaven?
सुनन्दं नाम मुशलं त्वष्ट्रा यन्निर्मितं पुरा ।
तज्जहार स दुष्टात्मा तेन हन्ति रणे रिपून् ॥१८॥
18. sunandaṃ nāma muśalaṃ tvaṣṭrā yannirmitaṃ purā .
tajjahāra sa duṣṭātmā tena hanti raṇe ripūn.
18. sunandam nāma muśalam tvaṣṭrā yat nirmitam purā
tat jahāra saḥ duṣṭātmā tena hanti raṇe ripūn
18. That wicked one (duṣṭātmā) stole the mace named Sunanda, which Tvaṣṭā had fashioned long ago. With it, he slays enemies in battle.
पातालान्तर्गतस्तेन भिनत्ति वसुधामिमाम् ।
ततोऽसुराणां सर्वेषां द्वाराणि कुरुतेऽसुरः ॥१९॥
19. pātālāntargatastena bhinatti vasudhāmimām .
tato'surāṇāṃ sarveṣāṃ dvārāṇi kurute'suraḥ.
19. pātālāntargataḥ tena bhinatti vasudhām imām
tataḥ asurāṇām sarveṣām dvārāṇi kurute asuraḥ
19. Having penetrated the underworld (pātāla), he pierces this earth with it (the mace). Then, that demon creates passages for all the asuras.
तेन भिन्नात्र वसुधा सुनन्दमुशलेन तु ।
भोक्ष्यते वसुधामेतां तमजित्वा कथं भवान् ॥२०॥
20. tena bhinnātra vasudhā sunandamuśalena tu .
bhokṣyate vasudhāmetāṃ tamajitvā kathaṃ bhavān.
20. tena bhinnā atra vasudhā sunandamuśalena tu
bhokṣyate vasudhām etām tam ajitvā kathaṃ bhavān
20. Indeed, this earth has been pierced here by him with the Sunanda mace. How will you, O king, enjoy this earth without defeating him?
यज्ञान्विध्वंसयत्युग्रो देवानामुपरोधकः ।
आप्याययति दैतेयान्स बली मुशलायुधः ॥२१॥
21. yajñānvidhvaṃsayatyugro devānāmuparodhakaḥ .
āpyāyayati daiteyānsa balī muśalāyudhaḥ.
21. yajñān vidhvaṃsayati ugraḥ devānām uparodakaḥ
āpyāyayati daiteyān saḥ balī muśalāyudhaḥ
21. That fierce individual, the obstructer of the gods, destroys the sacrificial rituals (yajña). He, the mighty one whose weapon is a club, also strengthens the demons.
यद्यरिं घातयस्येनं पातालान्तरगोचरम् ।
ततः समस्तवसुधापतिस्त्वं परमेश्वरः ॥२२॥
22. yadyariṃ ghātayasyenaṃ pātālāntaragocaram .
tataḥ samastavasudhāpatistvaṃ parameśvaraḥ.
22. yadi arim ghātayasi enam pātālāntaragocaram
tataḥ samastavasudhāpatiḥ tvam parameśvaraḥ
22. If you slay this enemy, who resides within the netherworld (pātāla), then you will be the lord of the entire earth, the supreme ruler.
मुशलं तस्य बलिनः सौनन्दं प्रोच्यते जनैः ।
तथा बलाबलं चैव तं वदन्ति विचक्षणाः ॥२३॥
23. muśalaṃ tasya balinaḥ saunandaṃ procyate janaiḥ .
tathā balābalaṃ caiva taṃ vadanti vicakṣaṇāḥ.
23. muśalam tasya balinaḥ saunandam procyate janaiḥ
tathā balābalam ca eva tam vadanti vicakṣaṇāḥ
23. His club, that of the powerful one, is called Saunanda by people. Likewise, the discerning individuals refer to him as 'strength and weakness' (balābalam).
तत्तु निर्वीर्यतां याति संस्पृष्टं योषिता नृप ।
तस्मिन्दिने द्वितीयेऽह्नि वीर्यवत्तदुदीर्यते ॥२४॥
24. tattu nirvīryatāṃ yāti saṃspṛṣṭaṃ yoṣitā nṛpa .
tasmindine dvitīye'hni vīryavattadudīryate.
24. tat tu nirvīryatām yāti saṃspṛṣṭam yoṣitā nṛpa
tasmin dine dvitīye ahni vīryavat tat udīryate
24. But that (club), O king, loses its potency (nirvīryatā) when touched by a woman. It regains its vigor (vīryavat) on the second day.
न स वेत्ति दुराचारः प्रभावं मुशलस्य तम् ।
योषित्कराग्रसंस्पर्शे दोषं वीर्यविशातनम् ॥२५॥
25. na sa vetti durācāraḥ prabhāvaṃ muśalasya tam .
yoṣitkarāgrasaṃsparśe doṣaṃ vīryaviśātanam.
25. na sa vetti durācāraḥ prabhāvaṃ muśalasya tam
yoṣitkarāgrasaṃsparśe doṣaṃ vīryaviśātanam
25. That ill-behaved person does not know the power of that club, nor does he understand the fault of touching a woman's fingertip, which leads to the destruction of potency.
एवं तस्य बलं भूप दानवस्य दुरात्मनः ।
मुशलस्य च ते प्रोक्तं यद्युक्तं तत्समाचर ॥२६॥
26. evaṃ tasya balaṃ bhūpa dānavasya durātmanaḥ .
muśalasya ca te proktaṃ yadyuktaṃ tatsamācara.
26. evaṃ tasya balaṃ bhūpa dānavasya durātmanaḥ
muśalasya ca te proktam yat yuktaṃ tat samācara
26. O king, in this way, the strength of that evil-minded demon and of the club has been explained to you. Now, do what is appropriate.
आसन्नमेतद्भवतः पुरस्य पृथिवीपते ।
कृतं तेन महारन्ध्रं निश्चिन्तः किं भवान्वृथा ॥२७॥
27. āsannametadbhavataḥ purasya pṛthivīpate .
kṛtaṃ tena mahārandhraṃ niścintaḥ kiṃ bhavānvṛthā.
27. āsannam etat bhavataḥ purasya pṛthivīpate kṛtam
tena mahārandhraṃ niścintaḥ kim bhavān vṛthā
27. O lord of the earth, this (danger) is imminent for your city. He has created a great vulnerability. Why are you needlessly carefree?
इत्युक्त्वा तु गते तस्मिन्पुरं गत्वा महीपतिः ।
मन्त्रयामास मन्त्रज्ञैः पुरमध्ये तु मन्त्रिभिः ॥२८॥
28. ityuktvā tu gate tasminpuraṃ gatvā mahīpatiḥ .
mantrayāmāsa mantrajñaiḥ puramadhye tu mantribhiḥ.
28. iti uktvā tu gate tasmin puram gatvā mahīpatiḥ
mantrayāmāsa mantrajñaiḥ puramadhye tu mantribhiḥ
28. After he had thus spoken and departed, the king went to the city and consulted with his ministers, who were skilled in counsel, within the city.
यथाश्रुतमशेषं तत्कथयामास मन्त्रिणाम् ।
मुशलस्य प्रभावं च वीर्यशातनमेव च ॥२९॥
29. yathāśrutamaśeṣaṃ tatkathayāmāsa mantriṇām .
muśalasya prabhāvaṃ ca vīryaśātanameva ca.
29. yathāśrutam aśeṣam tat kathayām āsa mantriṇām
muśalasya prabhāvam ca vīryaśātanam eva ca
29. He recounted everything he had heard to the ministers, including the mace's (muśala) power and its ability to destroy (śātana) strength.
तं मन्त्रं क्रियमाणं तु मन्त्रिभिस्तेन भूभृता ।
तत्पार्श्ववर्तिनी कन्या शुश्रावाथ मुदावती ॥३०॥
30. taṃ mantraṃ kriyamāṇaṃ tu mantribhistena bhūbhṛtā .
tatpārśvavartinī kanyā śuśrāvātha mudāvatī.
30. tam mantram kriyamāṇam tu mantribhiḥ tena bhūbhṛtā
tatpārśvavartinī kanyā śuśrāva atha mudāvatī
30. While that counsel (mantra) was being deliberated by the ministers and that king, the maiden Mudāvatī, who was present by his side, then overheard it.
ततः कतिपयाहे तु तां कन्यां वयसान्विताम् ।
जहारोपवनाद्दैत्यः कुजृम्भः स सखीवृताम् ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ katipayāhe tu tāṃ kanyāṃ vayasānvitām .
jahāropavanāddaityaḥ kujṛmbhaḥ sa sakhīvṛtām.
31. tataḥ katipayāhe tu tām kanyām vayasānvitām
jahāra upavanāt daityaḥ kujṛmbhaḥ sa sakhīvṛtām
31. Then, after a few days, the demon Kujṛmbha abducted that grown-up maiden, who was accompanied by her female friends, from the garden.
तच्छ्रुत्वा स महीपालः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ।
पुत्रावुवाच त्वरितं गच्छतं वनकोविदौ ॥३२॥
32. tacchrutvā sa mahīpālaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ .
putrāvuvāca tvaritaṃ gacchataṃ vanakovidau.
32. tat śrutvā sa mahīpālaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ
putrau uvāca tvaritam gacchatam vanakovidau
32. Upon hearing that, the king, whose eyes were agitated with anger, promptly addressed his two sons, 'You two, experts in the forest, go at once!'
निर्विन्ध्यायास्तटे गर्तस्तेन गत्वा रसातलम् ।
स हन्यतां योऽपहर्ता मुदावत्याः सुदुर्मतिः ॥३३॥
33. nirvindhyāyāstaṭe gartastena gatvā rasātalam .
sa hanyatāṃ yo'pahartā mudāvatyāḥ sudurmatiḥ.
33. nirvindhyāyāḥ taṭe gartaḥ tena gatvā rasātalam
saḥ hanyatām yaḥ apahartā mudāvatyāḥ sudurmatiḥ
33. On the bank of the Nīrvindhyā river, there is a pit. Whoever is the abductor of Mudāvatī, that extremely evil-minded one, let him be killed by going through that pit to the netherworld (rasātalam).
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तौ तत्सुतौ प्राप्य तं गर्त्तं तत्पदानुगौ ।
युयुधाते कुजृम्भेण स्वसैन्येनातिकोपितौ ॥३४॥
34. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tatastau tatsutau prāpya taṃ garttaṃ tatpadānugau .
yuyudhāte kujṛmbheṇa svasainyenātikopitau.
34. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ tau tatsutau prāpya tam gartam
tatpadānugau yuyudhāte kujṛmbheṇa svasainyena atikopitau
34. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, those two sons (of his), following his footsteps, reached that pit. Highly enraged, they fought Kujṛmbha with their own army.
ततः परिघनिस्त्रिंशशक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः ।
बाणैश्चाविरतं युद्धं तेषामासीत्सुदारुणम् ॥३५॥
35. tataḥ parighanistriṃśaśaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ .
bāṇaiścāvirataṃ yuddhaṃ teṣāmāsītsudāruṇam.
35. tataḥ parighanistriṃśaśaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ
bāṇaiḥ ca aviratam yuddham teṣām āsīt sudāruṇam
35. Then, a continuous and exceedingly fierce battle ensued among them, involving maces, swords, spears, lances, battle-axes, and arrows.
ततो मायाबलवता तेन दैत्येन तावुभौ ।
राजपुत्रौ रणे बद्धौ निहताशेषसैनिकौ ॥३६॥
36. tato māyābalavatā tena daityena tāvubhau .
rājaputrau raṇe baddhau nihatāśeṣasainikau.
36. tataḥ māyābalavatā tena daityena tau ubhau
rājaputrau raṇe baddhau nihatāśeṣasainikau
36. Then, by that demon, who possessed great power of illusion (māyā), both princes were bound in battle, their remaining soldiers all having been slain.
तच्छ्रुत्वा स महीपालः प्राहेदं सर्वसैनिकान् ।
बद्धपुत्रः परामार्तिमुपेतो मुनिसत्तम ॥३७॥
37. tacchrutvā sa mahīpālaḥ prāhedaṃ sarvasainikān .
baddhaputraḥ parāmārtimupeto munisattama.
37. tat śrutvā sa mahīpālaḥ prāha idam sarvasainikān
baddhaputraḥ parām ārtim upetaḥ munisattama
37. O best of sages, having heard that, the king, whose son was imprisoned and who was afflicted by great distress, said this to all his soldiers.
यस्तं निहत्य दैतेयं मोचयिष्यति मे सुताम् ।
तस्याहं सम्प्रदास्यामि तामेवायतलोचनाम् ॥३८॥
38. yastaṃ nihatya daiteyaṃ mocayiṣyati me sutām .
tasyāhaṃ sampradāsyāmi tāmevāyatalocanām.
38. yaḥ tam nihatya daiteyam mocayiṣyati me sutām
tasya aham sampradāsyāmi tām eva āyatalocanām
38. Whoever kills that demon and frees my daughter, to him I shall give her, the long-eyed maiden herself.
इत्येवं घोषयांचक्रे स राजा स्वपुरे तदा ।
निराशः पुत्रतनयाबन्धमोक्षाय वै मुने ॥३९॥
39. ityevaṃ ghoṣayāṃcakre sa rājā svapure tadā .
nirāśaḥ putratanayābandhamokṣāya vai mune.
39. iti evam ghoṣayām cakre sa rājā svapure tadā

39. O sage, thus did that king, despairing of the liberation (mokṣa) of his son and daughter from their captivity, then proclaim in his own city.
ततः शुश्राव वत्सप्रीर्भलन्दनसुतो हि तत् ।
आघोष्यमाणं बलवान्कृतास्त्रः शौर्यसंयुतः ॥४०॥
40. tataḥ śuśrāva vatsaprīrbhalandanasuto hi tat .
āghoṣyamāṇaṃ balavānkṛtāstraḥ śauryasaṃyutaḥ.
40. tataḥ śuśrāva vatsaprīḥ bhalandanasutaḥ hi tat
āghoṣyamāṇam balavān kṛtāstraḥ śauryasaṃyutaḥ
40. Then, Vatsaprī, the son of Bhalandana - who was indeed mighty, accomplished in wielding weapons, and endowed with valor - heard that proclamation.
स चागम्याभिवाद्यैनं प्राह पार्थिवसत्तमम् ।
विनयावनतो भूत्वा पितुर्मित्रमनुत्तमम् ॥४१॥
41. sa cāgamyābhivādyainaṃ prāha pārthivasattamam .
vinayāvanato bhūtvā piturmitramanuttamam.
41. saḥ ca āgamya abhivādya enam prāha pārthivasattamam
| vinayāvanataḥ bhūtvā pituḥ mitram anuttamam
41. And having approached and saluted him, he, becoming humbly bowed, spoke to that excellent king, who was his father's unequalled friend.
आज्ञापयाशु मामेव तनयौ मोचयामि ते ।
तवैव तेजसा हत्वा तं दैत्यं तनयां च ते ॥४२॥
42. ājñāpayāśu māmeva tanayau mocayāmi te .
tavaiva tejasā hatvā taṃ daityaṃ tanayāṃ ca te.
42. ājñāpaya āśu mām eva tanayau mocayāmi te | tava
eva tejasā hatvā tam daityam tanayām ca te
42. Just command me quickly; I will free your two sons and your daughter, having killed that demon by your very power.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
स तं मुदा परिष्वज्य प्रियसख्युरथात्मजम् ।
गम्यतामिति संसिद्ध्यै वत्सेत्याह स पार्थिवः ॥४३॥
43. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
sa taṃ mudā pariṣvajya priyasakhyurathātmajam .
gamyatāmiti saṃsiddhyai vatsetyāha sa pārthivaḥ.

43. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, that king, having joyfully embraced his dear friend's son (ātman), said, 'Go forth, my child, for success!'
स्थाने स्थास्यति मे वत्सो यद्येवं कुरुते विधिम् ।
वत्सैतत्क्रियतामाशु यद्युत्साहि मनस्तव ॥४४॥
44. sthāne sthāsyati me vatso yadyevaṃ kurute vidhim .
vatsaitatkriyatāmāśu yadyutsāhi manastava.
44. sthāne sthāsyati me vatsaḥ yadi evam kurute vidhim
| vatsa etat kriyatām āśu yadi utsāhi manaḥ tava
44. It is fitting; my son will stand firm if he performs this duty (vidhi) in this manner. 'O child, let this be done quickly if your mind is enthusiastic!'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः सखड्गः सधनुर्बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान् ।
जगाम वीर पातालं तेन गर्तेन सत्वरः ॥४५॥
45. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ sakhaḍgaḥ sadhanurbaddhagodhāṅgulitravān .
jagāma vīra pātālaṃ tena gartena satvaraḥ.

45. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, the hero, equipped with a sword, a bow, and wearing a tied leather finger-protector, quickly went to the netherworld (Pātāla) through that tunnel.
ततो ज्यास्वनमत्युग्रं स चक्रे पार्थिवात्मजः ।
येन पातालमखिलमासीदापूरितान्तरम् ॥४६॥
46. tato jyāsvanamatyugraṃ sa cakre pārthivātmajaḥ .
yena pātālamakhilamāsīdāpūritāntaram.

46. Then, the king's son made an extremely fierce sound of his bowstring, by which the entire netherworld (Pātāla) had its interior filled (with that sound).
ततो ज्यास्वनमाकर्ण्य कुजृम्भो दानवेश्वरः ।
आजगामातिकोपेन स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः ॥४७॥
47. tato jyāsvanamākarṇya kujṛmbho dānaveśvaraḥ .

47. Then, having heard the sound of the bowstring, Kujṛmbha, the lord of the Dānavas, approached with great anger, surrounded by his own army.
ततो युद्धमभूत्तस्य तेन पार्थिवसूनुना ।
ससैन्यस्य ससैन्येन बलिनो बलशालिना ॥४८॥
48. tato yuddhamabhūttasya tena pārthivasūnunā .
sasainyasya sasainyena balino balaśālinā.

48. Then, a battle occurred between him (Kujṛmbha), who was accompanied by his army and was mighty, and that son of the king, who was also accompanied by his army and was powerful.
दिनानि त्रीणि स यदा योधितस्तेन दानवः ।
ततः कोपपरीतात्मा मुसलायाभ्यधावत ॥४९॥
49. dināni trīṇi sa yadā yodhitastena dānavaḥ .
tataḥ kopaparītātmā musalāyābhyadhāvata.

49. When he had fought that demon for three days, then the demon, whose being (ātman) was overcome by anger, rushed towards the mace.
गन्धैर्माल्यैस्तथा धूपैः पूज्यमानः स तिष्ठति ।
अन्तःपुरे महाभाग प्रजापतिविनिर्मितः ॥५०॥
50. gandhairmālyaistathā dhūpaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ sa tiṣṭhati .
antaḥpure mahābhāga prajāpativinirmitaḥ.
50. gandhaiḥ mālyaiḥ tathā dhūpaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ sa

50. He, the greatly fortunate one, remains in the inner apartment, being worshipped with fragrances, garlands, and incense, having been created by Prajāpati.
ततो विज्ञातमुशलप्रभावा सा मुदावती ।
पस्पर्श मुशलश्रेष्ठमतिनम्रशिरोधरा ॥५१॥
51. tato vijñātamuśalaprabhāvā sā mudāvatī .
pasparśa muśalaśreṣṭhamatinamraśirodharā.
51. tataḥ vijñātamuśalaprabhāvā sā mudāvatī

51. Then Mudāvatī, who had understood the mace's power and whose head was bowed very low, touched the excellent mace.
पुनर्यावत्स गृह्णाति मुशलं तं महासुरः ।
तावत्सा वन्दनव्याजात्पस्पर्शानेकशः शुभा ॥५२॥
52. punaryāvatsa gṛhṇāti muśalaṃ taṃ mahāsuraḥ .
tāvatsā vandanavyājātpasparśānekaśaḥ śubhā.
52. punaḥ yāvat sa gṛhṇāti musalam tam mahāsuraḥ
tāvat sā vandanavyājāt pasparśa anekaśaḥ śubhā
52. Again, while that great demon was taking that mace, she, the auspicious one, touched it many times on the pretext of salutation.
ततः स गत्वा युयुधे मुसलेनासुरेश्वरः ।
व्यर्था मुशलपातास्ते संजग्मुस्तेषु शत्रुषु ॥५३॥
53. tataḥ sa gatvā yuyudhe musalenāsureśvaraḥ .
vyarthā muśalapātāste saṃjagmusteṣu śatruṣu.
53. tataḥ sa gatvā yuyudhe musalena asureśvaraḥ
vyarthāḥ muśalapātāḥ te saṃjagmuḥ teṣu śatruṣu
53. Then, having advanced, that lord of asuras fought with a mace. However, those mace-blows were ineffective; they merely struck his enemies.
परमास्त्रे तु निर्वीर्ये सौनन्दे मुशले मुने ।
अस्त्रैः शस्त्रैश्च दैतेयः सोऽयुध्यत रणेऽरिणा ॥५४॥
54. paramāstre tu nirvīrye saunande muśale mune .

54. But, O sage (muni), when the supreme weapon, the Saunanda mace, had become ineffective, that demon (daiteya) fought with his enemy (ari) in battle (raṇa) using both missile weapons and hand-held weapons.
शस्त्रास्त्रैर्नः समस्तस्य राजपुत्रस्य सोऽसुरः ।
मुशलेन बलं तस्य तच्च तन्व्या निराकृतम् ॥५५॥
55. śastrāstrairnaḥ samastasya rājaputrasya so'suraḥ .
muśalena balaṃ tasya tacca tanvyā nirākṛtam.
55. śastrāstraiḥ naḥ samastasya rājaputrasya saḥ asuraḥ
muśalena balam tasya tat ca tanvyā nirākṛtam
55. That demon (asura) confronted our entire prince with his (the demon's) various weapons and missiles. Yet, his (the demon's) strength, including that associated with his mace, was completely neutralized by the slender one (tanvyā).
ततः पराजित्य स भूपसूनुरस्त्राणि शस्त्राणि च दानवस्य ।
चकार सद्यो विरथं ततश्च सचर्मखड्गः पुनरप्यधावत् ॥५६॥
56. tataḥ parājitya sa bhūpasūnurastrāṇi śastrāṇi ca dānavasya .
cakāra sadyo virathaṃ tataśca sacarmakhaḍgaḥ punarapyadhāvat.
56. tataḥ parājitya saḥ bhūpasūnuḥ
astrāṇi śastrāṇi ca dānavasya
cakāra sadyaḥ viratham tataḥ ca

56. Then, that prince (bhūpasūnu), having overcome the demon's (dānava) missile weapons and hand-held weapons, immediately rendered him chariot-less. And thereafter, the demon, with his shield and sword, rushed forward once more.
तमापतन्तं रभसाऽभ्युदीर्णं विस्पष्टकोपं त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रुम् ।
शस्त्रेण वह्नेर्भुवि राजपुत्रौ जघान कालानलसप्रभेण ॥५७॥
57. tamāpatantaṃ rabhasā'bhyudīrṇaṃ vispaṣṭakopaṃ tridaśendraśatrum .
śastreṇa vahnerbhuvi rājaputrau jaghāna kālānalasaprabheṇa.
57. tam āpatantam rabhasā abhyudīrṇam

57. The two princes struck down on the ground that enemy of Indra, who was rushing forth violently, his anger clearly manifest, using a weapon that shone like the fire of universal destruction.
स पावकास्त्रेण हृदि क्षतो भृशं तत्याज देहं त्रिदशारिरात्मनः ।
बभूव सद्यश्च महोरगाणां रसातलान्तेषु महानथोत्सवः ॥५८॥
58. sa pāvakāstreṇa hṛdi kṣato bhṛśaṃ tatyāja dehaṃ tridaśārirātmanaḥ .
babhūva sadyaśca mahoragāṇāṃ rasātalānteṣu mahānathotsavaḥ.
58. saḥ pāvakāstreṇa hṛdi kṣataḥ bhṛśam
tatyāja deham tridaśāriḥ
ātmanaḥ babhūva sadyaḥ ca mahoragāṇām
rasātalānteṣu mahān atha utsavaḥ
58. Severely wounded in the heart by the fire-weapon, that enemy of the gods (tridaśāri) gave up his own body. And immediately thereafter, a great celebration (utsava) took place among the great serpents in the deepest parts of the netherworld (rasātala).
ततोऽपतत्पुष्पवृष्टिर्महीपालसुतोपरि ।
जगुर्गन्धर्वपतयो देववाद्यानि सस्वनुः ॥५९॥
59. tato'patatpuṣpavṛṣṭirmahīpālasutopari .
jagurgandharvapatayo devavādyāni sasvanuḥ.
59. tataḥ apatat puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ mahīpālasutopari
jaguḥ gandharvapatayaḥ devavādyāni sasvanuḥ
59. Then, a shower of flowers fell upon the prince. The lords of the Gandharvas sang, and divine musical instruments (devavādya) resounded.
स चापि राजपुत्रस्तं हत्वा तौ नृपतेः सुतौ ।
मोचयामास तन्वङ्गी तां च कन्यां मुदावतीम् ॥६०॥
60. sa cāpi rājaputrastaṃ hatvā tau nṛpateḥ sutau .
mocayāmāsa tanvaṅgī tāṃ ca kanyāṃ mudāvatīm.
60. saḥ ca api rājaputraḥ tam hatvā tau nṛpateḥ sutau
mocayāmāsa tanvaṅgīm tām ca kanyām mudāvatīm
60. And that prince, having killed that (demon), then released those two sons of the king and also that slender-bodied girl, Mudāvatī.
तच्चापि मुसलं तस्मिन्कुजृम्भे विनिपातिते ।
जग्राह नागाधिपतिरनन्तः शेषसंज्ञितः ॥६१॥
61. taccāpi musalaṃ tasminkujṛmbhe vinipātite .
jagrāha nāgādhipatiranantaḥ śeṣasaṃjñitaḥ.
61. tat ca api musalam tasmin kujṛmbhe vinipātite
| jagrāha nāgādhipatiḥ anantaḥ śeṣasaṃjñitaḥ
61. And when that Kujṛmbha was struck down, Ananta, the lord of serpents known as Sheṣa, took that mace.
तस्याश्च परितुष्टोऽसौ शेषः सर्वोरगेश्वरः ।
मुदावत्या मुदाध्यातमनोवृत्तिस्तपोधनः ॥६२॥
62. tasyāśca parituṣṭo'sau śeṣaḥ sarvorageśvaraḥ .
mudāvatyā mudādhyātamanovṛttistapodhanaḥ.
62. tasyāḥ ca parituṣṭaḥ asau śeṣaḥ sarvorageśvaraḥ
| mudāvatyā mudā dhyāta manovṛttiḥ tapodhanaḥ
62. And that Sheṣa, the lord of all serpents, whose mental inclination was joyfully contemplated by Mudāvatī, and who was rich in asceticism (tapas), was greatly pleased with her.
सुनन्दमुसलस्पर्शं यच्चकार पुनः पुनः ।
योषित्करतलस्पर्शप्रभावज्ञातिशोभना ॥६३॥
63. sunandamusalasparśaṃ yaccakāra punaḥ punaḥ .
yoṣitkaratalasparśaprabhāvajñātiśobhanā.
63. sunanda musala sparśam yat ca cakāra punaḥ punaḥ
| yoṣit karatalasparśa prabhāva jñāti śobhanā
63. And he (Sheṣa) repeatedly performed that very pleasing mace-touch, while she (Mudāvatī) was beautiful and knew the power of a woman's palm-touch.
मुदावत्यास्ततो नाम नागराजस्तदाकरोत् ।
सुनन्दामिति सानन्दं सौनन्दगुणजं द्विज ॥६४॥
64. mudāvatyāstato nāma nāgarājastadākarot .
sunandāmiti sānandaṃ saunandaguṇajaṃ dvija.
64. mudāvatyāḥ tataḥ nāma nāgarājaḥ tadā akarot |
sunandām iti sa ānandam saunanda guṇajam dvija
64. O Dvija, the Nāgarāja (Sheṣa) then joyfully gave Mudāvatī the name "Sunandā", a name born of excellent qualities (related to her pleasing nature).
स चापि राजपुत्रस्तां भ्रातृभ्यां सहितां पितुः ।
समीपमानिनायाशु प्रणिपत्याह चैव तम् ॥६५॥
65. sa cāpi rājaputrastāṃ bhrātṛbhyāṃ sahitāṃ pituḥ .
samīpamānināyāśu praṇipatyāha caiva tam.
65. saḥ ca api rājaputraḥ tām bhrātṛbhyām sahitām
pituḥ samīpam ānināya āśu praṇipatya āha ca eva tam
65. And that prince quickly brought her, accompanied by his two brothers, to his father's presence. Then, bowing down, he spoke to him.
आनीतौ तनयौ तात तथैवेयं मुदावती ।
तवाज्ञया मयान्यद्यत्कर्तव्यं तत्समादिश ॥६६॥
66. ānītau tanayau tāta tathaiveyaṃ mudāvatī .
tavājñayā mayānyadyatkartavyaṃ tatsamādiśa.
66. ānītau tanayau tāta tathā eva iyam mudāvatī tava
ājñayā mayā anyat yat kartavyam tat samādiśa
66. O father, these two sons have been brought, and similarly, this Mudāvatī. Whatever else is to be done by me according to your command, please instruct it.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः प्रहर्षसम्पूर्णहृदयः स महीपतिः ।
साधुसाध्वित्यथाहोच्चैर्वत्स वत्सेति शोभनम् ॥६७॥
67. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ praharṣasampūrṇahṛdayaḥ sa mahīpatiḥ .
sādhusādhvityathāhoccairvatsa vatseti śobhanam.
67. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ praharṣasampūrṇahṛdayaḥ saḥ mahīpatiḥ
sādhu sādhu iti atha āha uccaiḥ vatsa vatsa iti śobhanam
67. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then that king, his heart filled with great joy, loudly exclaimed, "Excellent, excellent! O son, O son! This is splendid!"
सभाजितोऽस्मि त्रिदशैर्वत्साहं कारणैस्त्रिभिः ।
त्वं जामाता च यत्प्राप्तो यच्चारिर्विनिपातितः ॥६८॥
68. sabhājito'smi tridaśairvatsāhaṃ kāraṇaistribhiḥ .
tvaṃ jāmātā ca yatprāpto yaccārirvinipātitaḥ.
68. sabhājitaḥ asmi tridaśaiḥ vatsa aham kāraṇaiḥ tribhiḥ
tvam jāmātā ca yat prāptaḥ yat ca ariḥ vinipātitaḥ
68. O son, I have been truly honored by the gods for three reasons: that you have returned, that the son-in-law has been secured, and that the enemy has been vanquished.
आगतान्यक्षतान्यत्र यच्चापत्यानि मे पुनः ।
तद्गृहाणाद्य शस्तेऽह्नि पाणिमस्या मयोदितम् ॥६९॥
69. āgatānyakṣatānyatra yaccāpatyāni me punaḥ .
tadgṛhāṇādya śaste'hni pāṇimasyā mayoditam.
69. āgatāni akṣatāni atra yat ca apatyāni me punaḥ |
tat gṛhāṇa adya śaste ahni pāṇim asyā mayā uditam
69. Here, accept these offerings and auspicious grains. Moreover, take my offspring (daughter) as well. Therefore, on this auspicious day, please accept her hand as I have declared.
त्वं राजपुत्र चार्वङ्ग्याः कन्याया दुहितुर्मम ।
मुदावत्या मुदा युक्तः सत्यवाक्यं कुरुष्व माम् ॥७०॥
70. tvaṃ rājaputra cārvaṅgyāḥ kanyāyā duhiturmama .
mudāvatyā mudā yuktaḥ satyavākyaṃ kuruṣva mām.
70. tvam rājaputra cārvaṅgyāḥ kanyāyāḥ duhituḥ mama
| mudāvatyāḥ mudā yuktaḥ satyavākyam kuruṣva mām
70. O Prince, you who are endowed with joy, make my declaration true regarding my daughter, the beautiful-limbed maiden Mudāvatī.
राजपुत्र उवाच ।
तातस्याज्ञा मया कार्या यद्ब्रवीषि करोमि तत् ।
त्वमेव तात जानीषे नैवात्राधिकृता वयम् ॥७१॥
71. rājaputra uvāca .
tātasyājñā mayā kāryā yadbravīṣi karomi tat .
tvameva tāta jānīṣe naivātrādhikṛtā vayam.
71. rājaputra uvāca | tātasya ājñā mayā kāryā yat bravīṣi karomi
tat | tvam eva tāta jānīṣe na eva atra adhikṛtā vayam
71. The Prince said: "Father, your command must be carried out by me. Whatever you say, I will do that. You alone, Father, truly know; we are not authorized in this matter."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततस्तयोः स राजेन्द्रश्चक्रे वैवाहिकं क्रमम् ।
मुदावत्याश्च दुहितुर्भलन्दनसुतस्य वै ॥७२॥
72. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tatastayoḥ sa rājendraścakre vaivāhikaṃ kramam .
mudāvatyāśca duhiturbhalandanasutasya vai.

72. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then that king of kings performed the marriage ritual for those two: for Mudāvatī, his daughter, and for the son of Bhalandana."
ततः स तया रेमे वत्सप्रीर्नवयौवनः ।
रमणीयेषु देशेषु प्रासादशिखरेषु च ॥७३॥
73. tataḥ sa tayā reme vatsaprīrnavayauvanaḥ .
ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu prāsādaśikhareṣu ca.
73. tataḥ sa tayā reme vatsaprīḥ navayauvanaḥ
ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu prāsādaśikhareṣu ca
73. Thereafter, the youthful Vatsapri enjoyed himself with her in delightful places and on palace rooftops.
कालेन गच्छता वृद्धः पिता तस्य भलन्दनः ।
वनं जगाम वत्सप्रीः स बभूव महीपतिः ॥७४॥
74. kālena gacchatā vṛddhaḥ pitā tasya bhalandanaḥ .
vanaṃ jagāma vatsaprīḥ sa babhūva mahīpatiḥ.

vanam jagāma vatsaprīḥ sa babhūva mahīpatiḥ
74. As time passed, his aged father Bhalandana went to the forest, and Vatsapri became the king.
इयाज यज्ञान्सततं प्रजा धर्मेण पालयन् ।
पुत्रवत्पाल्यमानास्तु प्रजास्तेन महात्मना ॥७५॥
75. iyāja yajñānsatataṃ prajā dharmeṇa pālayan .
putravatpālyamānāstu prajāstena mahātmanā.

putravat pālyamānāḥ tu prajāḥ tena mahātmanā
75. He constantly performed Vedic rituals (yajña), protecting his subjects in accordance with natural law (dharma). And those subjects, being protected by that great-souled one as if they were his own sons...
ववृधुर्विषये तस्य न चाभूद्वर्णसङ्करः ।
न दस्युव्यालदुर्वृत्तभयमासीच्च कस्यचित् ॥७६॥
76. vavṛdhurviṣaye tasya na cābhūdvarṇasaṅkaraḥ .
na dasyuvyāladurvṛttabhayamāsīcca kasyacit.
76. vavṛdhuḥ viṣaye tasya na ca abhūt varṇasaṅkaraḥ
na dasyuvyāladurvṛttabhayam āsīt ca kasyacit
76. In his realm, they flourished, and there was no mixing of social classes (varṇasaṅkara). Furthermore, there was no fear of robbers, wild animals, or wicked individuals for anyone.
