मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तस्मै दत्त्वा ततः शापं नलं क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्द्विज ।
प्रमतिर्भार्गवः कोपात्त्रैलोक्यं निर्दहन्निव ॥१॥

1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tasmai dattvā tataḥ śāpaṃ nalaṃ kruddho'bravīddvija .
pramatirbhārgavaḥ kopāttrailokyaṃ nirdahanniva.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'Then, the angry brahmin Pramati, a descendant of Bhṛgu, having given a curse to Nala, spoke to him as if burning the three worlds with his wrath.'
मदोन्मत्तो यतो भार्यां भवानत्र ममाश्रमे ।
बलाद्गृह्णाति भस्मत्वं तस्माद्व्रजतु मा चिरम् ॥२॥
बलाद्गृह्णाति भस्मत्वं तस्माद्व्रजतु मा चिरम् ॥२॥
2. madonmatto yato bhāryāṃ bhavānatra mamāśrame .
balādgṛhṇāti bhasmatvaṃ tasmādvrajatu mā ciram.

mada-unmattaḥ yataḥ bhāryām bhavān atra mama āśrame
| balāt gṛhṇāti bhasmatvam tasmāt vrajatu mā ciram
| balāt gṛhṇāti bhasmatvam tasmāt vrajatu mā ciram

Because you, intoxicated by arrogance, forcibly seize my wife here in my hermitage (āśrama), therefore, may you turn to ashes immediately.
तेनोदाहृतमात्रे च वाक्ये तस्मिंस्तदा नलः ।
देहजेनाग्निना सद्यो भस्मपुञ्जस्तदाऽभवत् ॥३॥

3. tenodāhṛtamātre ca vākye tasmiṃstadā nalaḥ .
dehajenāgninā sadyo bhasmapuñjastadā'bhavat.

tena udāhṛta-mātre ca vākye tasmin tadā nalaḥ |
dehājena agninā sadyaḥ bhasma-puñjaḥ tadā abhavat

And at that very moment, as soon as that statement was uttered by him, Nala immediately turned into a heap of ashes by the fire born from his own body.
दृष्ट्वा प्रभावं तं तस्य सुदेवो विमदस्ततः ।
प्रणामनम्रः प्राहेदं क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतामिति ॥४॥

4. dṛṣṭvā prabhāvaṃ taṃ tasya sudevo vimadastataḥ .
praṇāmanamraḥ prāhedaṃ kṣamyatāṃ kṣamyatāmiti.

dṛṣṭvā prabhāvam tam tasya sudevaḥ vimadaḥ tataḥ
praṇāmanamraḥ prāha idam kṣamyatām kṣamyatām iti

Seeing his power, Sudeva was then freed from his arrogance. Humbly bowing, he said this: "Please forgive me, please forgive me!"
यदुक्तवांस्त्वां भगवन्सुरापानमदाकुलम् ।
तत्क्षम्यतां प्रसीद त्वं शापोऽयं विनिवर्त्यताम् ॥५॥

5. yaduktavāṃstvāṃ bhagavansurāpānamadākulam .
tatkṣamyatāṃ prasīda tvaṃ śāpo'yaṃ vinivartyatām.
tatkṣamyatāṃ prasīda tvaṃ śāpo'yaṃ vinivartyatām.

yat uktavān tvām bhagavan surāpānamadākulam tat
kṣamyatām prasīda tvam śāpaḥ ayam vinivartyatām
kṣamyatām prasīda tvam śāpaḥ ayam vinivartyatām
5.
O revered one, please forgive what I said to you while I was bewildered by the intoxication of liquor. Be pleased and let this curse be withdrawn.
एवं प्रसादितस्तेन प्रमतिः प्राह भार्गवः ।
गतकोपो नले दग्धे नावनीतेन चेतसा ॥६॥

6. evaṃ prasāditastena pramatiḥ prāha bhārgavaḥ .

Thus propitiated by him, Prāmati, the son of Bhṛgu, his anger (kopa) having subsided, spoke with a softened heart, even though Nala (Sudeva) had already been afflicted by the curse.
नान्यथा भावि तद्वाक्यं यन्मया समुदीरितम् ।
तथापि ते करिष्यामि प्रसन्नोऽनुग्रहं परम् ॥७॥

7. nānyathā bhāvi tadvākyaṃ yanmayā samudīritam .
tathāpi te kariṣyāmi prasanno'nugrahaṃ param.
tathāpi te kariṣyāmi prasanno'nugrahaṃ param.

na anyathā bhāvi tat vākyam yat mayā samudīritam
tathā api te kariṣyāmi prasannaḥ anugraham param
tathā api te kariṣyāmi prasannaḥ anugraham param

That statement which I uttered will not be otherwise; it cannot be changed. Nevertheless, being pleased (prasanna), I will grant you a supreme favor.
भविता वैश्यजातीयो भवान्नास्त्यत्र संशयः ।
भविता क्षत्रियो वैश्यस्तस्मिन्नेवाशु जन्मनि ॥८॥

8. bhavitā vaiśyajātīyo bhavānnāstyatra saṃśayaḥ .
bhavitā kṣatriyo vaiśyastasminnevāśu janmani.

bhavitā vaiśyajātīyaḥ bhavān na asti atra saṃśayaḥ
| bhavitā kṣatriyaḥ vaiśyaḥ tasmin eva āśu janmani

8.
You will belong to the vaiśya class; there is no doubt about this. In that very next birth, you, being a vaiśya, will quickly become a kṣatriya.
ग्रहीष्यति बलात्कन्यां यदा ते क्षत्रसम्भवः ।
तदा त्वं क्षत्रियो वैश्यः स्वगृहीतो भविष्यसि ॥९॥
तदा त्वं क्षत्रियो वैश्यः स्वगृहीतो भविष्यसि ॥९॥
9. grahīṣyati balātkanyāṃ yadā te kṣatrasambhavaḥ .
tadā tvaṃ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ svagṛhīto bhaviṣyasi.
tadā tvaṃ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ svagṛhīto bhaviṣyasi.

grahīṣyati balāt kanyām yadā te kṣatrasambhavaḥ |
tadā tvam kṣatriyaḥ vaiśyaḥ svagṛhītaḥ bhaviṣyasi
tadā tvam kṣatriyaḥ vaiśyaḥ svagṛhītaḥ bhaviṣyasi
9.
When a person born of the kṣatriya class forcefully takes your daughter, then you, a vaiśya, will become a kṣatriya by (your own) self-assertion.
एवं स वैश्यो भूपाल सुदेवोऽस्मत्पिताभवत् ।
अहं च या महाभाग तत्सर्वं श्रूयतां त्वया ॥१०॥
अहं च या महाभाग तत्सर्वं श्रूयतां त्वया ॥१०॥
10. evaṃ sa vaiśyo bhūpāla sudevo'smatpitābhavat .
ahaṃ ca yā mahābhāga tatsarvaṃ śrūyatāṃ tvayā.
ahaṃ ca yā mahābhāga tatsarvaṃ śrūyatāṃ tvayā.

evam saḥ vaiśyaḥ bhūpāla sud_evaḥ asmatpitā abhavat
| aham ca yā mahābhāga tat sarvam śrūyatām tvayā
| aham ca yā mahābhāga tat sarvam śrūyatām tvayā

Thus, O King, that vaiśya became our father, Sudeva. And, O exalted one, whatever I am, let all that be heard by you.
सुरतो नाम राजर्षिः प्रागासीद्गन्धमादने ।
तपस्वी नियताहारस्त्यक्तसङ्गो वनाश्रयः ॥११॥

11. surato nāma rājarṣiḥ prāgāsīdgandhamādane .
tapasvī niyatāhārastyaktasaṅgo vanāśrayaḥ.

surataḥ nāma rājarṣiḥ prāk āsīt gandhamādane

Formerly, in Gandhamādana, there was a royal sage named Surata. He was an ascetic (tapasvin) with a controlled diet, who had renounced attachment, and who dwelled in the forest.
ततः श्येनमुखभ्रष्टां दृष्ट्वैकां शारिकां भुवि ।
कृपाऽभूज्जनिता मूर्च्छा तथा तस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
कृपाऽभूज्जनिता मूर्च्छा तथा तस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ śyenamukhabhraṣṭāṃ dṛṣṭvaikāṃ śārikāṃ bhuvi .
kṛpā'bhūjjanitā mūrcchā tathā tasya mahātmanaḥ.
kṛpā'bhūjjanitā mūrcchā tathā tasya mahātmanaḥ.

tataḥ śyenamukhabhraṣṭām dṛṣṭvā ekām śārikām bhuvi
kṛpā abhūt janitā mūrcchā tathā tasya mahātmanaḥ
kṛpā abhūt janitā mūrcchā tathā tasya mahātmanaḥ

Then, upon seeing a single mynah bird (śārikā) fallen to the ground from the mouth of a hawk, compassion (kṛpā) arose, and unconsciousness (mūrcchā) thus overcame that great soul (mahātman).
ततो मूर्च्छावसानेऽहं तस्योत्पन्ना शरीरतः ।
स मां दृष्ट्वा च जग्राह स्निह्यमानेन चेतसा ॥१३॥
स मां दृष्ट्वा च जग्राह स्निह्यमानेन चेतसा ॥१३॥
13. tato mūrcchāvasāne'haṃ tasyotpannā śarīrataḥ .
sa māṃ dṛṣṭvā ca jagrāha snihyamānena cetasā.

tataḥ mūrcchāvasāne aham tasya utpannā śarīrataḥ
saḥ mām dṛṣṭvā ca jagrāha snihyamānena cetasā

Then, at the cessation of his unconsciousness (mūrcchā), I was born from his body. He, seeing me, accepted me with an affectionate heart.
यस्मात्कृपाभिभूतस्य मम जातेयमात्मजा ।
तस्मात्कृपावती नाम्ना भविष्यत्याह स प्रभो ॥१४॥
तस्मात्कृपावती नाम्ना भविष्यत्याह स प्रभो ॥१४॥
14. yasmātkṛpābhibhūtasya mama jāteyamātmajā .
tasmātkṛpāvatī nāmnā bhaviṣyatyāha sa prabho.
tasmātkṛpāvatī nāmnā bhaviṣyatyāha sa prabho.

yasmāt kṛpābhibhūtasya mama jātā iyam ātmajā
tasmāt kṛpāvatī nāmnā bhaviṣyati āha saḥ prabho
tasmāt kṛpāvatī nāmnā bhaviṣyati āha saḥ prabho

"Because this daughter (ātmajā) was born to me who was overcome by compassion (kṛpā), therefore she will be known by the name Kṛpāvatī," he said, "O lord."
ततोऽहमाश्रमे तस्य वर्धमाना दिवानिशम् ।
सखीभिः सह तुल्याभिर्विचरामि वनानि च ॥१५॥
सखीभिः सह तुल्याभिर्विचरामि वनानि च ॥१५॥
15. tato'hamāśrame tasya vardhamānā divāniśam .
sakhībhiḥ saha tulyābhirvicarāmi vanāni ca.
sakhībhiḥ saha tulyābhirvicarāmi vanāni ca.

tataḥ aham āśrame tasya vardhamānā divāniśam
sakhībhiḥ saha tulyābhiḥ vicarāmi vanāni ca
sakhībhiḥ saha tulyābhiḥ vicarāmi vanāni ca
15.
Then I, growing day and night in his hermitage (āśrama) along with my equals among female companions, roam through the forests.
ततो मुनेरगस्त्यस्य भ्रातागस्त्य इति श्रुतः ।
स चिन्वन्कानने वन्यं सखीभिः कोपितोऽशपत् ॥१६॥
स चिन्वन्कानने वन्यं सखीभिः कोपितोऽशपत् ॥१६॥
16. tato muneragastyasya bhrātāgastya iti śrutaḥ .
sa cinvankānane vanyaṃ sakhībhiḥ kopito'śapat.
sa cinvankānane vanyaṃ sakhībhiḥ kopito'śapat.

tataḥ muneḥ agastyasya bhrātā agastyaḥ iti śrutaḥ
saḥ cinvan kānane vanyam sakhībhiḥ kopitaḥ aśapat
saḥ cinvan kānane vanyam sakhībhiḥ kopitaḥ aśapat
16.
Then, the brother of the sage Agastya, who was also known as Agastya, became angry with his female companions while collecting forest produce in the forest, and he cursed them.
यस्मान्मां वैश्य इत्याह भवती तेन ते शपे ।
वैश्या भविष्यसीत्युक्ते प्रसाद्योक्तो मया मुनिः ।
नापराधं कृतवती तवाहं द्विजसत्तम ।
अन्यासामपराधेन किमर्थं शप्तवानसि ॥१७॥
वैश्या भविष्यसीत्युक्ते प्रसाद्योक्तो मया मुनिः ।
नापराधं कृतवती तवाहं द्विजसत्तम ।
अन्यासामपराधेन किमर्थं शप्तवानसि ॥१७॥
17. yasmānmāṃ vaiśya ityāha bhavatī tena te śape .
vaiśyā bhaviṣyasītyukte prasādyokto mayā muniḥ .
nāparādhaṃ kṛtavatī tavāhaṃ dvijasattama .
anyāsāmaparādhena kimarthaṃ śaptavānasi.
vaiśyā bhaviṣyasītyukte prasādyokto mayā muniḥ .
nāparādhaṃ kṛtavatī tavāhaṃ dvijasattama .
anyāsāmaparādhena kimarthaṃ śaptavānasi.
17.
yasmāt mām vaiśya iti āha bhavatī tena te śape
vaiśyā bhaviṣyasi iti ukte prasādya uktaḥ mayā
muniḥ na aparādham kṛtavatī tava aham dvijasattama
anyāsām aparādhena kimartham śaptavān asi
vaiśyā bhaviṣyasi iti ukte prasādya uktaḥ mayā
muniḥ na aparādham kṛtavatī tava aham dvijasattama
anyāsām aparādhena kimartham śaptavān asi

"Because you, madam, called me a vaiśya, I therefore curse you: you shall become a vaiśya woman!" When this was said, I, having appeased the sage, spoke to him: "O best among the twice-born (dvijasattama), I have committed no offense against you. Why have you cursed me on account of the offense of others?"
ऋषिरुवाच ।
दुष्टतां दुष्टसंसर्गाददुष्टमपि गच्छति ।
सुराबिन्दुनिपातेन पञ्चगव्यघटो यथा ॥१८॥
दुष्टतां दुष्टसंसर्गाददुष्टमपि गच्छति ।
सुराबिन्दुनिपातेन पञ्चगव्यघटो यथा ॥१८॥
18. ṛṣiruvāca .
duṣṭatāṃ duṣṭasaṃsargādaduṣṭamapi gacchati .
surābindunipātena pañcagavyaghaṭo yathā.
duṣṭatāṃ duṣṭasaṃsargādaduṣṭamapi gacchati .
surābindunipātena pañcagavyaghaṭo yathā.
18.
ṛṣiḥ uvāca duṣṭatām duṣṭasaṃsargāt aduṣṭam api
gacchati surābindunipātena pañcagavyaghaṭaḥ yathā
gacchati surābindunipātena pañcagavyaghaṭaḥ yathā
18.
The sage said: "Even one who is not wicked attains wickedness through association with wicked people, just as a pot of pañcagavya (a sacred mixture of five cow products) becomes impure by the falling of a drop of liquor."
प्रणिपत्य ह्यनिष्टोऽपि यत्त्वयाहं प्रसादितः ।
तस्मादनुग्रहं बाले शृणुष्व च करोम्यहम् ॥१९॥
तस्मादनुग्रहं बाले शृणुष्व च करोम्यहम् ॥१९॥
19. praṇipatya hyaniṣṭo'pi yattvayāhaṃ prasāditaḥ .
tasmādanugrahaṃ bāle śṛṇuṣva ca karomyaham.
tasmādanugrahaṃ bāle śṛṇuṣva ca karomyaham.

praṇipatya hi aniṣṭaḥ api yat tvayā aham prasāditaḥ
tasmāt anugraham bāle śṛṇuṣva ca karomi aham
tasmāt anugraham bāle śṛṇuṣva ca karomi aham
19.
Indeed, since I, though hostile, was appeased by you, therefore, O young woman, listen, and I will grant a favor.
वैश्ययोनौ यदा जाता त्वं पुत्रं बोधयिष्यसि ।
राज्याय जातिस्मरतां तदा त्वं समवाप्स्यसि ॥२०॥
राज्याय जातिस्मरतां तदा त्वं समवाप्स्यसि ॥२०॥
20. vaiśyayonau yadā jātā tvaṃ putraṃ bodhayiṣyasi .
rājyāya jātismaratāṃ tadā tvaṃ samavāpsyasi.
rājyāya jātismaratāṃ tadā tvaṃ samavāpsyasi.

vaiśyayonau yadā jātā tvam putram bodhayiṣyasi
rājyāya jātismaratām tadā tvam samavāpsyasi
rājyāya jātismaratām tadā tvam samavāpsyasi

When you are born into the Vaiśya caste and enlighten your son for the sake of the kingdom, then you will regain the memory of your past lives (jātismaratām).
ततो भूयः क्षत्रजातिं प्राप्ता त्वं पतिना सह ।
दिव्यानवाप्स्यसे भोगान्गच्छ भीतिरपैतु ते ॥२१॥
दिव्यानवाप्स्यसे भोगान्गच्छ भीतिरपैतु ते ॥२१॥
21. tato bhūyaḥ kṣatrajātiṃ prāptā tvaṃ patinā saha .
divyānavāpsyase bhogāngaccha bhītirapaitu te.
divyānavāpsyase bhogāngaccha bhītirapaitu te.

tataḥ bhūyaḥ kṣatrajātim prāptā tvam patinā saha
divyān avāpsyase bhogān gaccha bhītiḥ apaitu te
divyān avāpsyase bhogān gaccha bhītiḥ apaitu te
21.
Thereafter, having once again attained birth in the Kṣatriya caste, you, along with your husband, will obtain divine enjoyments. Go; let your fear depart.
एवं शप्तास्मि राजेन्द्र तेन पूर्वं महर्षिणा ।
पिता च मे पूर्वमेवं शप्तः प्रमतिनाऽभवत् ॥२२॥
पिता च मे पूर्वमेवं शप्तः प्रमतिनाऽभवत् ॥२२॥
22. evaṃ śaptāsmi rājendra tena pūrvaṃ maharṣiṇā .
pitā ca me pūrvamevaṃ śaptaḥ pramatinā'bhavat.
pitā ca me pūrvamevaṃ śaptaḥ pramatinā'bhavat.

evam śaptā asmi rājendra tena pūrvam maharṣiṇā
pitā ca me pūrvam evam śaptaḥ pramatinā abhavat
pitā ca me pūrvam evam śaptaḥ pramatinā abhavat
22.
Thus, O king (rājendra), I was cursed previously by that great sage. And my father, too, was formerly cursed in this manner by Pramati.
एवं वैश्यो न राजंस्त्वं न च वैश्यः पिता मम ।
न त्वं हि मय्यदुष्टायामदुष्टो दुष्यसे कथम् ॥२३॥
न त्वं हि मय्यदुष्टायामदुष्टो दुष्यसे कथम् ॥२३॥
23. evaṃ vaiśyo na rājaṃstvaṃ na ca vaiśyaḥ pitā mama .
na tvaṃ hi mayyaduṣṭāyāmaduṣṭo duṣyase katham.
na tvaṃ hi mayyaduṣṭāyāmaduṣṭo duṣyase katham.
23.
evam vaiśyaḥ na rājan tvam na ca vaiśyaḥ pitā mama
na tvam hi mayi aduṣṭāyām aduṣṭaḥ duṣyase katham
na tvam hi mayi aduṣṭāyām aduṣṭaḥ duṣyase katham
23.
Thus, O king (rājan), you are not a Vaiśya, nor is my father a Vaiśya. How then can you, being faultless yourself, find fault (duṣyase) in me, who am also faultless?
