धर्मपक्षिण ऊचुः ।
हरिश्चन्द्रेति राजर्षिरासीत् त्रेतायुगे पुरा ।
धर्मात्मा पृथिवीपालः प्रोल्लसत्कीर्तिरुत्तमः ॥१॥
1. dharmapakṣiṇa ūcuḥ .
hariścandreti rājarṣirāsīt tretāyuge purā .

1. The Dharma-birds (dharma-pakṣin) said: 'Formerly, in the Tretā age, there was a royal sage named Hariścandrá. He was a righteous-souled (dharmātman) protector of the earth, endowed with supreme and resplendent glory.'
न दुर्भिक्षं न च व्याधिर्नाकालमरणं नृणाम् ।
नाधर्मरुचयः पौरास्तस्मिन् शासति पार्थिवे ॥२॥
2. na durbhikṣaṃ na ca vyādhirnākālamaraṇaṃ nṛṇām .
nādharmarucayaḥ paurāstasmin śāsati pārthive.
2. na durbhikṣam na ca vyādhiḥ na akālamaraṇam nṛṇām
na adharmarucayaḥ paurāḥ tasmin śāsati pārthive
2. There was no famine, no disease, and no untimely death among the people. Nor did the citizens have a taste for unrighteousness (adharma) while that king (pārthiva) ruled.
बभूवुर्न तथोन्मत्ता धन-वीर्य-तपोमदैः ।
नाजायन्त स्त्रियश्चैव काश्चिदप्राप्तयौवनाः ॥३॥
3. babhūvurna tathonmattā dhana-vīrya-tapomadaiḥ .
nājāyanta striyaścaiva kāścidaprāptayauvanāḥ.
3. babhūvuḥ na tathā unmattāḥ dhanavīryatapomādaiḥ
na ajāyanta striyaḥ ca eva kāścit aprāptayauvanāḥ
3. Nor did people become arrogant due to the intoxication of wealth, valor, or austerity (tapas). Furthermore, no women were born who had not yet attained youth.
स कदाचिन्महाबाहुररण्येऽनुसरन् मृगम् ।
शुश्राव शब्दमसकृत् त्रायस्वेति च योषिताम् ॥४॥
4. sa kadācinmahābāhuraraṇye'nusaran mṛgam .
śuśrāva śabdamasakṛt trāyasveti ca yoṣitām.
4. sa kadācit mahābāhuḥ araṇye anusaran mṛgam
śuśrāva śabdam asakṛt trāyasva iti ca yoṣitām
4. Once, that mighty-armed (mahābāhu) king, while pursuing a deer in the forest, repeatedly heard the cries of women saying, 'Save us!'
स विहाय मृगं राजा मा भैषीरित्यभाषत ।
मयि शासति दुर्मेधाः कोऽयमन्यायवृत्तिमान् ॥५॥
5. sa vihāya mṛgaṃ rājā mā bhaiṣīrityabhāṣata .
mayi śāsati durmedhāḥ ko'yamanyāyavṛttimān.
5. sa vihāya mṛgam rājā mā bhaiṣīḥ iti abhāṣata
mayi śāsati durmedhāḥ kaḥ ayam anyāyavṛttimān
5. The king, abandoning the deer, spoke, saying, 'Do not fear! While I rule, who is this foolish, unjust individual?'
तत्क्रन्दितानुसारी च सर्वारम्भविघातकृत् ।
एकस्मिन्नन्तरे रौद्रो विघ्नराट् समचिन्तयत् ॥६॥
6. tatkranditānusārī ca sarvārambhavighātakṛt .
ekasminnantare raudro vighnarāṭ samacintayat.
6. tatkranditānusārī ca sarvārambhavighātakṛt
ekasmin antare raudraḥ vighnarāṭ samacintayat
6. And meanwhile, that fierce king of obstacles (vighnarāja), who obstructs all undertakings, following their cries, began to ponder.
विश्वामित्रोऽयमतुलं तप आस्थाय वीर्यवान् ।
प्रागसिद्धाभवादीनां विद्याः साध्यति व्रती ॥७॥
7. viśvāmitro'yamatulaṃ tapa āsthāya vīryavān .
prāgasiddhābhavādīnāṃ vidyāḥ sādhyati vratī.
7. viśvāmitraḥ ayam atulam tapaḥ āsthāya vīryavān
prāk asiddhābhavādīnām vidyāḥ sādhyati vratī
7. This powerful (vīryavān) Viśvāmitra, a performer of vows (vratī), having undertaken immense austerity (tapas), is now achieving previously unaccomplished branches of knowledge (vidyā).
साध्यमानाः क्षमामौनचित्तसंयमिनामुना ।
ता वै भयार्ताः क्रन्दन्ति कथं कार्यमिदं मया ॥८॥
8. sādhyamānāḥ kṣamāmaunacittasaṃyamināmunā .
tā vai bhayārtāḥ krandanti kathaṃ kāryamidaṃ mayā.
8. sādhyamānāḥ kṣamāmaunacittasaṃyaminā amunā tā
vai bhayārtāḥ krandanti katham kāryam idam mayā
8. Indeed, those [demons], tormented by that ascetic who practices patience, silence, and mental control, are crying out in fear. How can this task be accomplished by me?
तेजस्वी कौशिकश्वेष्ठो वयमस्य सुदुर्बलाः ।
क्रोशन्त्येतास्तथा भीता दुष्पारं प्रतिभाति मे ॥९॥
9. tejasvī kauśikaśveṣṭho vayamasya sudurbalāḥ .
krośantyetāstathā bhītā duṣpāraṃ pratibhāti me.
9. tejasvī kauśikaḥ ca iṣṭaḥ vayam asya sudurbalāḥ
krośanti etāḥ tathā bhītāḥ duṣpāram pratibhāti me
9. The radiant Kauśika (Viśvāmitra) is revered, and we are very weak in comparison to him. These [demons], thus frightened, are crying out. This task appears insurmountable to me.
अथवायं नृपः प्राप्तो मा भैरिति वदन् मुहुः ।
इममेव प्रविश्याशु साधयिष्ये यथेप्सितम् ॥१०॥
10. athavāyaṃ nṛpaḥ prāpto mā bhairiti vadan muhuḥ .
imameva praviśyāśu sādhayiṣye yathepsitam.
10. athavā ayam nṛpaḥ prāptaḥ mā bhaiḥ iti vadan muhuḥ
imam eva praviśya āśu sādhayiṣye yathā īpsitam
10. Alternatively, this king has arrived, repeatedly saying, 'Do not fear!' I shall quickly enter this very king and accomplish my desired objective.
इति संचिन्त्य रौद्रेण विघ्नराजेन वै ततः ।
तेनाविष्टो नृपः कोपादिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. iti saṃcintya raudreṇa vighnarājena vai tataḥ .
tenāviṣṭo nṛpaḥ kopādidaṃ vacanamabravīt.
11. iti saṃcintya raudreṇa vighnarājena vai tataḥ
tena āviṣṭaḥ nṛpaḥ kopāt idam vacanam abravīt
11. Having thus deliberated, that terrifying king of obstacles (Vighnarāja) thereupon indeed caused the king, who was possessed by him, to speak these words out of anger.
कोऽयं बघ्नाति वस्त्रान्ते पावकं पापकृन्नरः ।
बलोष्णतेजसा दीप्ते मयि पत्यावुपस्थिते ॥१२॥
12. ko'yaṃ baghnāti vastrānte pāvakaṃ pāpakṛnnaraḥ .
baloṣṇatejasā dīpte mayi patyāvupasthite.
12. kaḥ ayam badhnāti vastrānte pāvakam pāpakṛt
naraḥ balauṣṇatejasā dīpte mayi patyau upasthite
12. Who is this sinful man who carries fire at the end of his garment, while I, the master, am present, shining with mighty heat and prowess?
सोऽद्य मत्कार्मुकाक्षेप-विदीपितदिगन्तरैः ।
शरैर्विभिन्नसर्वाङ्गो दीर्घनिद्रां प्रवेक्ष्यति ॥१३॥
13. so'dya matkārmukākṣepa-vidīpitadigantaraiḥ .
śarairvibhinnasarvāṅgo dīrghanidrāṃ pravekṣyati.
13. saḥ adya matkārmukākṣepavidīpitadigantaraiḥ
śaraiḥ vibhinnasarvāṅgaḥ dīrghanidrām pravekṣyati
13. Today, with his entire body pierced by arrows that will illuminate the quarters of the sky from the twang of my bow, he will enter a long sleep (death).
विश्वामित्रस्ततः क्रुद्धः श्रुत्वा तन्नृपतेर्वचः ।
क्रुद्धे चर्षिवरे तस्मिन् नेशुर्विद्याः क्षणेन ताः ॥१४॥
14. viśvāmitrastataḥ kruddhaḥ śrutvā tannṛpatervacaḥ .
kruddhe carṣivare tasmin neśurvidyāḥ kṣaṇena tāḥ.
14. viśvāmitraḥ tataḥ kruddhaḥ śrutvā tat nṛpateḥ
vacaḥ ca ṛṣivare tasmin neśuḥ vidyāḥ kṣaṇena tāḥ
14. Then Viśvāmitra became enraged after hearing the king's words. And when that excellent sage became angry, those particular powers (vidyās) vanished in an instant.
स चापि राजा तं दृष्ट्वा विश्वामित्रं तपोनिधिम् ।
भीतः प्रावेपतात्यर्थं सहसाश्वत्थपर्णवत् ॥१५॥
15. sa cāpi rājā taṃ dṛṣṭvā viśvāmitraṃ taponidhim .
bhītaḥ prāvepatātyarthaṃ sahasāśvatthaparṇavat.
15. saḥ ca api rājā tam dṛṣṭvā viśvāmitram taponidhim
bhītaḥ prāvepat atyartham sahasā aśvatthaparṇavat
15. And that king, too, seeing Viśvāmitra, who was a treasure of austerity (tapas), became greatly frightened and suddenly trembled exceedingly, like an Aśvattha leaf.
स दुरात्मन्निति यदा मुनिस्तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ।
ततः स राजा विनयात् प्रणिपत्याभ्यभाषत ॥१६॥
16. sa durātmanniti yadā munistiṣṭheti cābravīt .
tataḥ sa rājā vinayāt praṇipatyābhyabhāṣata.
16. sa durātman iti yadā muniḥ tiṣṭha iti ca abravīt
tataḥ sa rājā vinayāt praṇipatya abhyabhāṣata
16. When the sage thus said, "You evil-minded one!" and "Stop!", then that king humbly bowed down and addressed him.
भगवन्नेष धर्मो मे नापराधो मम प्रभो ।
न क्रोद्धुमर्हसि मुने निजधर्मरतस्य मे ॥१७॥
17. bhagavanneṣa dharmo me nāparādho mama prabho .
na kroddhumarhasi mune nijadharmaratasya me.
17. bhagavan eṣaḥ dharmaḥ me na aparādhaḥ mama prabho
na kroddhum arhasi mune nija dharma ratasya me
17. "O venerable one, this is my natural law (dharma); it is not my offense, O Lord. You ought not to be angry with me, O sage, for I am devoted to my own natural law (dharma)."
दातव्यं रक्षितव्यं च धर्मज्ञेन महीक्षिता ।
चापं चोद्यम्य योद्धव्यं धर्मशास्त्रानुसारतः ॥१८॥
18. dātavyaṃ rakṣitavyaṃ ca dharmajñena mahīkṣitā .
cāpaṃ codyamya yoddhavyaṃ dharmaśāstrānusārataḥ.
18. dātavyam rakṣitavyam ca dharmajñena mahīkṣitā
cāpam ca udyamya yoddhavyam dharmaśāstrānusārataḥ
18. What should be given and what should be protected must be done by a king who understands natural law (dharma). Also, one must fight after raising the bow, in accordance with the scriptures of natural law (dharma-śāstra).
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
दातव्यं कस्य के रक्ष्याः कैर्योद्धव्यं च ते नृप ।
क्षिप्रमेतत् समाचक्ष्व यद्यधर्मभयं तव ॥१९॥
19. viśvāmitra uvāca .
dātavyaṃ kasya ke rakṣyāḥ kairyoddhavyaṃ ca te nṛpa .
kṣiprametat samācakṣva yadyadharmabhayaṃ tava.
19. viśvāmitraḥ uvāca dātavyam kasya ke rakṣyāḥ kaiḥ yoddhavyam
ca te nṛpa kṣipram etat samācakṣva yadi adharma bhayam tava
19. Viśvāmitra said: "To whom should donations be made? Who should be protected? And by whom should battle be waged, O king? Quickly explain this, if you have any fear of unrighteousness (adharma)."
हरिश्चन्द्र उवाच ।
दातव्यं विप्रमुख्येभ्यो ये चान्ये कृशवृत्तयः ।
रक्ष्या भीताः सदा युद्धं कर्तव्यं परिपन्थिभिः ॥२०॥
20. hariścandra uvāca .
dātavyaṃ vipramukhyebhyo ye cānye kṛśavṛttayaḥ .
rakṣyā bhītāḥ sadā yuddhaṃ kartavyaṃ paripanthibhiḥ.
20. hariścandra uvāca dātavyaṃ vipramukhyebhyaḥ ye ca anye
kṛśavṛttayaḥ rakṣyāḥ bhītāḥ sadā yuddhaṃ kartavyaṃ paripanthibhiḥ
20. Harishchandra said: Gifts should be given to prominent Brahmins and to others who have meager livelihoods. The fearful should always be protected, and war must be waged against enemies.
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
यदि राजा भवान् सम्यग्राजधर्ममवेक्षते ।
निर्वेष्टुकामो विप्रोऽहं दीयतामिष्टदक्षिणा ॥२१॥
21. viśvāmitra uvāca .
yadi rājā bhavān samyagrājadharmamavekṣate .
nirveṣṭukāmo vipro'haṃ dīyatāmiṣṭadakṣiṇā.
21. viśvāmitra uvāca yadi rājā bhavān samyak rājadharmaṃ
avekṣate nirveṣṭukāmaḥ vipraḥ aham dīyatām iṣṭadakṣiṇā
21. Vishvamitra said: If Your Majesty, the king, properly observes the royal constitution (dharma), then I, a Brahmin, desirous of performing a ritual, ask that the desired sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā) be given.
पक्षिण ऊचुः ।
एतद्राजा वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ।
पुनर्जातमिवात्मानं मेने प्राह च कौशिकम् ॥२२॥
22. pakṣiṇa ūcuḥ .
etadrājā vacaḥ śrutvā prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā .
punarjātamivātmānaṃ mene prāha ca kauśikam.
22. pakṣiṇaḥ ūcuḥ etat rājā vacaḥ śrutvā prahṛṣṭena
antarātmanā punarjātam iva ātmānaṃ mene prāha ca kauśikam
22. The birds said: Having heard these words, the king, with a greatly delighted inner self (ātman), considered himself as if reborn and spoke to Kaushika (Vishvamitra).
उच्यतां भगवन् यत्ते दातव्यमविशङ्कितम् ।
दत्तमित्येव तद्विद्धि यद्यपि स्यात् सुदुर्लभम् ॥२३॥
23. ucyatāṃ bhagavan yatte dātavyamaviśaṅkitam .
dattamityeva tadviddhi yadyapi syāt sudurlabham.
23. ucyatām bhagavan yat te dātavyam aviśaṅkitam dattam
iti eva tat viddhi yadi api syāt sudurlabham
23. O revered sir, let whatever is to be given to you be spoken of without hesitation! Know that it is as good as given, even if it should be very difficult to obtain.
हिरण्यं वा सुवर्णं वा पुत्रः पत्नी कलेवरम् ।
प्राणा राज्यं पुरं लक्ष्मीर्यदभिप्रेतमात्मनः ॥२४॥
24. hiraṇyaṃ vā suvarṇaṃ vā putraḥ patnī kalevaram .
prāṇā rājyaṃ puraṃ lakṣmīryadabhipretamātmanaḥ.
24. hiraṇyam vā suvarṇam vā putraḥ patnī kalevaram
prāṇā rājyam puram lakṣmīḥ yat abhipretam ātmanaḥ
24. Whether it be gold or fine gold, a son, a wife, one's body, life, a kingdom, a city, or prosperity - whatever is truly desired by the self (ātman).
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
राजन् प्रतिगृहीतोऽयं यस्ते दत्तः प्रतिग्रहः ।
प्रयच्छ प्रथमं तावद् दक्षिणां राजसूयिकीम् ॥२५॥
25. viśvāmitra uvāca .
rājan pratigṛhīto'yaṃ yaste dattaḥ pratigrahaḥ .
prayaccha prathamaṃ tāvad dakṣiṇāṃ rājasūyikīm.
25. viśvāmitra uvāca rājan pratigṛhītaḥ ayam yaḥ te dattaḥ
pratigrahaḥ prayaccha prathamam tāvat dakṣiṇām rājasūyikīm
25. Viśvāmitra said, "O King, this gift (pratigraha) which you offered has been accepted. Now, first, hand over the sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā) for the Rājasūya sacrifice."
राजोवाच ।
ब्रह्मंस्तामपि दास्यामि दक्षिणां भवतो ह्यहम् ।
व्रियतां द्विजशार्दूल यस्तवेष्टः प्रतिग्रहः ॥२६॥
26. rājovāca .
brahmaṃstāmapi dāsyāmi dakṣiṇāṃ bhavato hyaham .
vriyatāṃ dvijaśārdūla yastaveṣṭaḥ pratigrahaḥ.
26. rājan uvāca brahman tām api dāsyāmi dakṣiṇām bhavataḥ hi
aham vriyatām dvijaśārdūla yaḥ tava iṣṭaḥ pratigrahaḥ
26. The King replied, "O Brāhmaṇa (brahman)! I will certainly give that sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā) to you. O best of the twice-born (dvijaśārdūla), please choose whatever gift (pratigraha) you desire."
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
ससागरां धरामेतां सभूभृद्ग्रामपत्तनाम् ।
राज्यं च सकलं वीर रथाश्व-गजसङ्कुलम् ॥२७॥
27. viśvāmitra uvāca .
sasāgarāṃ dharāmetāṃ sabhūbhṛdgrāmapattanām .
rājyaṃ ca sakalaṃ vīra rathāśva-gajasaṅkulam.
27. viśvāmitra uvāca sasāgarām dharām etām sabhūbhṛtgrāmapattanām
rājyam ca sakalam vīra rathaśvagajasaṅkulam
27. Viśvāmitra replied, "O hero, (I choose) this earth (dhara) with its oceans, its mountains, villages, and cities, and the entire kingdom (rājya) bustling with chariots, horses, and elephants."
कोष्ठागारं च कोषं च यच्चान्यद्विद्यते तव ।
विना भार्यां च पुत्रं च शरीरं च तवानघ ॥२८॥
28. koṣṭhāgāraṃ ca koṣaṃ ca yaccānyadvidyate tava .
vinā bhāryāṃ ca putraṃ ca śarīraṃ ca tavānagha.
28. koṣṭhāgāram ca koṣam ca yat ca anyat vidyate tava
| vinā bhāryām ca putram ca śarīram ca tava anagha
28. O sinless one, your storehouse, your treasury, and whatever else exists belonging to you, excluding your wife, your son, and your own body.
धर्मं च सर्वधर्मज्ञ यो यान्तमनुगच्छति ।
बहुना वा किमुक्तेन सर्वमेतत् प्रदीयताम् ॥२९॥
29. dharmaṃ ca sarvadharmajña yo yāntamanugacchati .
bahunā vā kimuktena sarvametat pradīyatām.
29. dharmam ca sarvadharmājña yaḥ yāntam anugacchati
| bahunā vā kim uktena sarvam etat pradīyatām
29. And, O knower of all forms of righteousness (dharma), (consider) that which accompanies one who departs. What is the use of elaborating further? Let all of this be given!
पक्षिण ऊचुः ।
प्रहृष्टेनैव मनसा सोऽविकारमुखो नृपः ।
तस्यर्षेर्वचनं श्रुत्वा तथेत्याह कृताञ्जलिः ॥३०॥
30. pakṣiṇa ūcuḥ .
prahṛṣṭenaiva manasā so'vikāramukho nṛpaḥ .
tasyarṣervacanaṃ śrutvā tathetyāha kṛtāñjaliḥ.
30. pakṣiṇaḥ ūcuḥ | prahṛṣṭena eva manasā saḥ avikāramukhaḥ
nṛpaḥ | tasya ṛṣeḥ vacanam śrutvā tathā iti āha kṛtāñjaliḥ
30. The birds said: That king, with a truly delighted mind and an unperturbed face, having heard the sage's words, responded 'So be it,' with folded hands.
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
सर्वस्वं यदि मे दत्तं राज्यमुर्वो बलं धनम् ।
प्रभुत्वं कस्य राजर्षे राज्यस्थे तापसे मयि ॥३१॥
31. viśvāmitra uvāca .
sarvasvaṃ yadi me dattaṃ rājyamurvo balaṃ dhanam .
prabhutvaṃ kasya rājarṣe rājyasthe tāpase mayi.
31. viśvāmitraḥ uvāca | sarvasvam yadi me dattam rājyam urvaḥ
balam dhanam | prabhutvam kasya rājarṣe rājyasthe tāpase mayi
31. Viśvāmitra said: 'If my entire property, kingdom, land, army, and wealth have been given to me, then whose sovereignty remains, O royal sage, while I, an ascetic, am (now) in the kingdom?'
हरिश्चन्द्र उवाच ।
यस्मिन्नपि मया काले ब्राह्मन् दत्ता वसुन्धरा ।
तस्मिन्नपि भवान् स्वामी किमुताद्य महीपतिः ॥३२॥
32. hariścandra uvāca .
yasminnapi mayā kāle brāhman dattā vasundharā .
tasminnapi bhavān svāmī kimutādya mahīpatiḥ.
32. hariścandra uvāca yasmin api mayā kāle brāhman dattā
vasundharā tasmin api bhavān svāmī kimuta adya mahīpatiḥ
32. Hariścandra said: "O brahmin, even at the very moment when I gave the earth (vasundharā), you became its master. How much more so are you its master today, since you are now the ruler (mahīpati) of the earth?"
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
यदि राजंस्त्वया दत्ता मम सर्वा वसुन्धरा ।
यत्र मे विषये स्वाम्यं तस्मान्निष्क्रान्तुमर्हसि ॥३३॥
33. viśvāmitra uvāca .
yadi rājaṃstvayā dattā mama sarvā vasundharā .
yatra me viṣaye svāmyaṃ tasmānniṣkrāntumarhasi.
33. viśvāmitra uvāca yadi rājan tvayā dattā mama sarvā
vasundharā yatra me viṣaye svāmyam tasmāt niṣkrāntum arhasi
33. Viśvāmitra said: "O king, if the entire earth (vasundharā) has truly been given to me by you, then you should depart from any region that is now under my dominion (svāmya)."
श्रोणीसूत्रादिसकलं मुक्त्वा भूषणसंग्रहम् ।
तरुवल्कलमाबध्य सह पत्न्या सुतेन च ॥३४॥
34. śroṇīsūtrādisakalaṃ muktvā bhūṣaṇasaṃgraham .
taruvalkalamābadhya saha patnyā sutena ca.
34. śroṇīsūtrādisakalam muktvā bhūṣaṇasaṃgraham
taruvalkalam ābadhya saha patnyā sutena ca
34. (He must depart) having abandoned the entirety of his hip-thread (śroṇīsūtra) and other such items, and his collection of ornaments (bhūṣaṇasaṅgraha), and having tied on garments made of tree-bark, along with his wife and son.
पक्षिण ऊचुः ।
तथेति चोक्त्वा कृत्वा च राजा गन्तुं प्रचक्रमे ।
स्वपत्न्या शैव्यया सार्धं बालकेनात्मजेन च ॥३५॥
35. pakṣiṇa ūcuḥ .
tatheti coktvā kṛtvā ca rājā gantuṃ pracakrame .
svapatnyā śaivyayā sārdhaṃ bālakenātmajena ca.
35. pakṣiṇaḥ ūcuḥ tathā iti ca uktvā kṛtvā ca rājā gantum
pracakrame svapatnyā śaivyayā sārdham bālakena ātmajena ca
35. The birds said: "Responding with 'So be it!' and having carried out (the instructions), the king began to depart, accompanied by his own wife Śaivyā and his son (bālaka ātmaja)."
व्रजतः स ततो रुद्ध्वा पन्थानं प्राह तं नृपम् ।
क्व यास्यसीत्यदत्त्वा मे दक्षिणां राजसूयिकीम् ॥३६॥
36. vrajataḥ sa tato ruddhvā panthānaṃ prāha taṃ nṛpam .
kva yāsyasītyadattvā me dakṣiṇāṃ rājasūyikīm.
36. vrajataḥ saḥ tataḥ ruddhvā panthānam prāha tam nṛpam
kva yāsyasi iti adattvā me dakṣiṇām rājasūyikīm
36. Then, obstructing his path as he was going, he said to that king, "Where will you go without giving me the sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā) for the Rājasūya (yajña)?"
हरिश्चन्द्र उवाच ।
भगवन् राज्यमेतत् ते दत्तं निहतकण्टकम् ।
अवशिष्टमिदं ब्रह्मन्नद्य देहत्रयं मम ॥३७॥
37. hariścandra uvāca .
bhagavan rājyametat te dattaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam .
avaśiṣṭamidaṃ brahmannadya dehatrayaṃ mama.
37. hariścandraḥ uvāca bhagavan rājyam etat te dattam
nihatakaṇṭakam avaśiṣṭam idam brahman adya dehatrayam mama
37. Hariścandra said: "O revered one, this kingdom (rājya), free from enemies, has been given to you. O Brahmin, only these three bodies of mine now remain."
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
तथापि खलु दातव्या त्वया मे यज्ञदक्षिणा ।
विशेषतो ब्राह्मणानं हन्त्यदत्तं प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥३८॥
38. viśvāmitra uvāca .
tathāpi khalu dātavyā tvayā me yajñadakṣiṇā .
viśeṣato brāhmaṇānaṃ hantyadattaṃ pratiśrutam.
38. viśvāmitraḥ uvāca tathāpi khalu dātavyā tvayā me
yajñadakṣiṇā viśeṣataḥ brāhmaṇānām hanti adattam pratiśrutam
38. Viśvāmitra said: "Nevertheless, indeed, the sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā) must be given by you to me. Especially, a promise that is not fulfilled causes harm to Brahmins."
यावत् तोषो राजसूये ब्राह्मणानां तभवेन्नृप ।
तावदेव तु दातव्या दक्षिणा राजसूयिकी ॥३९॥
39. yāvat toṣo rājasūye brāhmaṇānāṃ tabhavennṛpa .
tāvadeva tu dātavyā dakṣiṇā rājasūyikī.
39. yāvat toṣaḥ rājasūye brāhmaṇānām tat bhavet
nṛpa tāvat eva tu dātavyā dakṣiṇā rājasūyikī
39. O King, the sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā) for the Rājasūya (yajña) must indeed be given until the Brahmins achieve satisfaction regarding that Rājasūya (yajña).
प्रतिश्रुत्य च दातव्यं योद्धव्यं चाततायिभिः ।
रक्षितव्यास्तथा चार्तास्त्वयैव प्राक् प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥४०॥
40. pratiśrutya ca dātavyaṃ yoddhavyaṃ cātatāyibhiḥ .
rakṣitavyāstathā cārtāstvayaiva prāk pratiśrutam.
40. pratiśrutya ca dātavyam yoddhavyam ca ātatāyibhiḥ
rakṣitavyāḥ tathā ca ārtāḥ tvayā eva prāk pratiśrutam
40. Having promised, what is to be given must be given, and aggressors must be fought. Likewise, the distressed must be protected. Indeed, this was promised by you yourself beforehand.
हरिश्चन्द्र उवाच ।
भगवन् साम्प्रतं नास्ति दास्ये कालक्रमेण ते ।
प्रसादं कुरु विप्रर्षे सद्भावमनुचिन्त्य च ॥४१॥
41. hariścandra uvāca .
bhagavan sāmprataṃ nāsti dāsye kālakrameṇa te .
prasādaṃ kuru viprarṣe sadbhāvamanucintya ca.

41. Hariścandra said: 'O revered sir, I currently have nothing. I will give it to you in due course of time. O Brahmin sage, please be gracious and consider my sincerity.'
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
किम्प्रमाणो मया कालः प्रतीक्ष्यस्ते जनाधिप ।
शीघ्रमाचक्ष्व शापाग्निरन्यथा त्वां प्रधक्ष्यति ॥४२॥
42. viśvāmitra uvāca .
kimpramāṇo mayā kālaḥ pratīkṣyaste janādhipa .
śīghramācakṣva śāpāgniranyathā tvāṃ pradhakṣyati.

42. Viśvāmitra said: 'O King, how long is the period I must wait? Tell me quickly, otherwise the fire of my curse will consume you!'
हरिचन्द्र उवाच ।
मासेन तव विप्रर्षे प्रदास्ये दक्षिणाधनम् ।
साम्प्रतं नास्ति मे वित्तमनुज्ञां दातुमर्हसि ॥४३॥
43. haricandra uvāca .
māsena tava viprarṣe pradāsye dakṣiṇādhanam .
sāmprataṃ nāsti me vittamanujñāṃ dātumarhasi.

43. Hariścandra said: 'O Brahmin sage, I will give you the sacrificial fee within a month. I currently possess no wealth. You should grant me permission.'
विश्वामित्र उवाच ।
गच्छ गच्छ नृपश्रेष्ठ स्वधर्ममनुपालय ।
शिवश्च तेऽध्वा भवतु मा सन्तु परिपन्थिनः ॥४४॥
44. viśvāmitra uvāca .
gaccha gaccha nṛpaśreṣṭha svadharmamanupālaya .
śivaśca te'dhvā bhavatu mā santu paripanthinaḥ.
44. viśvāmitraḥ uvāca gaccha gaccha nṛpaśreṣṭha svadharmam
anupālaya śivaḥ ca te adhvā bhavatu mā santu paripanthinaḥ
44. Viśvāmitra said: "Go, go, O best among kings, and protect your own duty (svadharma). May your path be auspicious, and may there be no obstacles."
पक्षिण ऊचुः ।
अनुज्ञातश्च गच्छेति जगाम वसुधाधिपः ।
पद्भ्यामनुचिता गन्तुमन्वगच्छत तं प्रिया ॥४५॥
45. pakṣiṇa ūcuḥ .
anujñātaśca gaccheti jagāma vasudhādhipaḥ .
padbhyāmanucitā gantumanvagacchata taṃ priyā.
45. pakṣiṇaḥ ūcuḥ anujñātaḥ ca gaccha iti jagāma vasudhādhipaḥ

45. The birds said: "Since you are permitted, go!" The king, ruler of the earth, departed. His beloved, unaccustomed to traveling by foot, followed him.
तं सभार्यं नृपश्रेष्ठं निर्यान्तं ससुतं पुरात् ।
दृष्ट्वा प्रचुक्रुशुः पौरा राज्ञश्चैवानुयायिनः ॥४६॥
46. taṃ sabhāryaṃ nṛpaśreṣṭhaṃ niryāntaṃ sasutaṃ purāt .
dṛṣṭvā pracukruśuḥ paurā rājñaścaivānuyāyinaḥ.
46. tam sabhāryam nṛpaśreṣṭham niryāntam sasutam purāt
dṛṣṭvā pracukruśuḥ paurāḥ rājñaḥ ca eva anuyāyinaḥ
46. Having seen that best among kings departing from the city with his wife and son, the citizens and also the king's followers cried out.
हानाथ किं जहास्यस्मान् नित्यार्तिपरिपीडितान् ।
त्वं धर्मतत्परो राजन् पौरानुग्रहकृत् तथा ॥४७॥
47. hānātha kiṃ jahāsyasmān nityārtiparipīḍitān .
tvaṃ dharmatatparo rājan paurānugrahakṛt tathā.
47. hā anātha kim jahāsi asmān nityārtiparipīḍitān
tvam dharmatatparaḥ rājan paurānugrahakṛt tathā
47. Alas! Why do you abandon us, who are always afflicted by suffering and rendered helpless? O King, you are devoted to your duty (dharma) and likewise a benefactor to your citizens.
नयास्मानपि राजर्षे यदि धर्ममवेक्षसे ।
मुहूर्तं तिष्ठ राजेन्द्र भवतो मुखपङ्कजम् ॥४८॥
48. nayāsmānapi rājarṣe yadi dharmamavekṣase .
muhūrtaṃ tiṣṭha rājendra bhavato mukhapaṅkajam.
48. naya asmān api rājarṣe yadi dharmam avekṣase
muhūrtam tiṣṭha rājendra bhavataḥ mukhapaṅkajam
48. O royal sage, if you observe your natural law (dharma), do not lead us away. O King of kings, please stay for a moment so we may behold your lotus-like face.
पिबामो नेत्रभ्रमरैः कदा द्रक्ष्यामहे पुनः ।
यस्य प्रयातस्य पुरो यान्ति पृष्ठे च पार्थिवाः ॥४९॥
49. pibāmo netrabhramaraiḥ kadā drakṣyāmahe punaḥ .
yasya prayātasya puro yānti pṛṣṭhe ca pārthivāḥ.
49. pibāmaḥ netrabhamaraiḥ kadā drakṣyāmahe punaḥ
yasya prayātasya puraḥ yānti pṛṣṭhe ca pārthivāḥ
49. We gaze upon your lotus-face with our eyes, like bees drinking nectar. When shall we see you again? For when he departed, kings used to walk both before and behind him.
तस्यानुयाति भार्येयं गृहीत्वा बालकं सुतम् ।
यस्य भृत्याः प्रयातस्य यान्तयग्रे कुञ्जचरस्थिताः ॥५०॥
50. tasyānuyāti bhāryeyaṃ gṛhītvā bālakaṃ sutam .
yasya bhṛtyāḥ prayātasya yāntayagre kuñjacarasthitāḥ.
50. tasya anuyāti bhāryā iyam gṛhītvā bālakam sutam
yasya bhṛtyāḥ prayātasya yānti agre kuñjacarasthitāḥ
50. His wife follows him, carrying her son, the boy. For when he departs, his servants, who are now situated like forest-dwellers, walk in front.
स एष पद्भ्यां राजेन्द्रो हरिश्चन्द्रोऽद्य गच्छति ।
हा राजन् सुकुमारं ते सुभ्रु सुत्वचमुन्नसम् ॥५१॥
51. sa eṣa padbhyāṃ rājendro hariścandro'dya gacchati .
hā rājan sukumāraṃ te subhru sutvacamunnasam.
51. sa eṣa padbhyām rājendraḥ hariścandraḥ adya gacchati
hā rājan sukumāram te subhru sutvacam unnasam
51. Behold, this very King of kings, Hariścandra, now walks on foot today. Alas, O King! Your tender form - with beautiful eyebrows, smooth skin, and a prominent nose -
पथि पांशुपरिक्लिष्टं मुखं कीदृग्भविष्यति ।
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ नृपश्रेष्ठ स्वधर्ममनुपालय ॥५२॥
52. pathi pāṃśuparikliṣṭaṃ mukhaṃ kīdṛgbhaviṣyati .
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha nṛpaśreṣṭha svadharmamanupālaya.
52. pathi pāṃśuparikliṣṭam mukham kīdṛk bhaviṣyati
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha nṛpaśreṣṭha svadharmam anupālaya
52. How will your face appear, soiled with dust on the road? Stop! Stop, O best of kings! Please uphold your own intrinsic nature (dharma).
आनृशंस्यं परो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां विशेषतः ।
किं दारैः किं सुतैर्नाथ धनैर्धान्यैरथापि वा ॥५३॥
53. ānṛśaṃsyaṃ paro dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ viśeṣataḥ .
kiṃ dāraiḥ kiṃ sutairnātha dhanairdhānyairathāpi vā.
53. ānṛśaṃsyam paraḥ dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇām viśeṣataḥ kim
dāraiḥ kim sutaiḥ nātha dhanaiḥ dhānyaiḥ atha api vā
53. Non-cruelty is the supreme intrinsic nature (dharma), especially for kṣatriyas. O Master, what is the use of wives, what is the use of sons, or of riches, or of grains?
सर्वमेतत् परित्यज्य छायाभूता वयं तव ।
हानाथ हा महाराज हा स्वामिन् किं जहासि नः ॥५४॥
54. sarvametat parityajya chāyābhūtā vayaṃ tava .
hānātha hā mahārāja hā svāmin kiṃ jahāsi naḥ.
54. sarvam etat parityajya chāyābhūtāḥ vayam tava
hā nātha hā mahārāja hā svāmin kim jahāsi naḥ
54. Having renounced all of this, we are like your shadows. Oh, my Lord! Oh, great king! Oh, my Master! Why do you abandon us?
यत्र त्वं तत्र हि वयं तत् सुखं यत्र वै भवान् ।
नगरं तद्भवान् यत्र स स्वर्गो यत्र नो नृपः ॥५५॥
55. yatra tvaṃ tatra hi vayaṃ tat sukhaṃ yatra vai bhavān .
nagaraṃ tadbhavān yatra sa svargo yatra no nṛpaḥ.
55. yatra tvam tatra hi vayam tat sukham yatra vai bhavān
nagaram tat bhavān yatra saḥ svargaḥ yatra naḥ nṛpaḥ
55. Where you are, there indeed are we. That is happiness where you are present. That is the true city where you are. That is heaven where our king resides.
इति पौरवचः श्रुत्वा राजा शोकपरिप्लुतः ।
अतिष्ठत् स तदा मार्गे तेषामेवानुकम्पया ॥५६॥
56. iti pauravacaḥ śrutvā rājā śokapariplutaḥ .
atiṣṭhat sa tadā mārge teṣāmevānukampayā.

56. Having heard these words from the citizens (pauravacas), the king, overwhelmed by sorrow, then remained there on the path, indeed out of compassion for them.
विश्वामित्रोऽपि तं दृष्ट्वा पौरवाक्याकुलीकृतम् ।
रोषमर्षविवृत्ताक्षः समागम्य वचोऽब्रवीत् ॥५७॥
57. viśvāmitro'pi taṃ dṛṣṭvā pauravākyākulīkṛtam .
roṣamarṣavivṛttākṣaḥ samāgamya vaco'bravīt.
57. viśvāmitraḥ api tam dṛṣṭvā pauravākyākulīkṛtam
roṣamarṣavivṛttākṣaḥ samāgamya vacaḥ abravīt
57. Viśvāmitra, too, seeing him disturbed by the citizens' words (pauravākya) and with eyes widened in anger and impatience, approached and spoke.
धिक् त्वां दुष्टसमाचारमनृतं जिह्मभाषणम् ।
मम राज्यं च दत्वा यः पुनः प्राक्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥५८॥
58. dhik tvāṃ duṣṭasamācāramanṛtaṃ jihmabhāṣaṇam .
mama rājyaṃ ca datvā yaḥ punaḥ prākraṣṭumicchasi.
58. dhik tvām duṣṭasamācāram anṛtam jihmabhāṣaṇam
mama rājyam ca datvā yaḥ punaḥ prākraṣṭum icchasi
58. Fie upon you, whose conduct is wicked, who are untruthful, and whose speech is deceitful! You who, having given my kingdom, now desire to reclaim it again!
इत्युक्तः परुषं तेन गच्छामीति सवेपथुः ।
ब्रुवन्नेवं ययौ शीघ्रमाकर्षन् दयितां करे ॥५९॥
59. ityuktaḥ paruṣaṃ tena gacchāmīti savepathuḥ .
bruvannevaṃ yayau śīghramākarṣan dayitāṃ kare.
59. iti uktaḥ paruṣam tena gacchāmi iti savepathuḥ
bruvan evam yayau śīghram ākarṣan dayitām kare
59. Spoken to harshly by him, and trembling, saying "I am going," he quickly departed, pulling his beloved wife (dayitā) by the hand.
कर्षतस्तां ततो भार्यां सुकुमारीं श्रमातुराम् ।
सहसा दण्डकाष्ठेन ताडयामास कौशिकः ॥६०॥
60. karṣatastāṃ tato bhāryāṃ sukumārīṃ śramāturām .
sahasā daṇḍakāṣṭhena tāḍayāmāsa kauśikaḥ.
60. karṣataḥ tām tataḥ bhāryām sukumārīm śramāturām
sahasā daṇḍakāṣṭhena tāḍayāmāsa kauśikaḥ
60. Then, Kauśika suddenly struck his very delicate wife, who was distressed by fatigue, with a stick while dragging her.
तां तथा ताडितां दृष्ट्वा हरिश्चन्द्रो महीपतिः ।
गच्छामीत्याह दुः खार्तो नान्यत् किञ्चिदुदाहरत् ॥६१॥
61. tāṃ tathā tāḍitāṃ dṛṣṭvā hariścandro mahīpatiḥ .
gacchāmītyāha duḥ khārto nānyat kiñcidudāharat.
61. tām tathā tāḍitām dṛṣṭvā hariścandraḥ mahīpatiḥ
gacchāmi iti āha duḥkhārtaḥ na anyat kiñcit udāharat
61. Seeing her thus struck, King Hariścandra, distressed by sorrow, merely said, "I am going," and uttered nothing else.
अथ विश्वे तदा देवाः पञ्च प्राहुः कृपालवः ।
विश्वामित्रः सुपापोऽयं लोकान् कान् समवाप्स्यति ॥६२॥
62. atha viśve tadā devāḥ pañca prāhuḥ kṛpālavaḥ .
viśvāmitraḥ supāpo'yaṃ lokān kān samavāpsyati.
62. atha viśve tadā devāḥ pañca prāhuḥ kṛpālavaḥ
viśvāmitraḥ supāpaḥ ayam lokān kān samavāpsyati
62. Then, all five merciful gods (devas) said, "This Viśvāmitra is extremely sinful. Which worlds will he attain?"
येनायां यज्वनां श्रेष्ठः स्वराज्यादवरोपितः ।
कस्य वा श्रद्धया पूतं सुतं सोमं महाध्वरे ।
पीत्वा वयं प्रयास्यामो मुदं मन्त्रपुरः सरम् ॥६३॥
63. yenāyāṃ yajvanāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ svarājyādavaropitaḥ .
kasya vā śraddhayā pūtaṃ sutaṃ somaṃ mahādhvare .
pītvā vayaṃ prayāsyāmo mudaṃ mantrapuraḥ saram.
63. yena ayam yajvanām śreṣṭhaḥ svarājyāt
avaropitaḥ kasya vā śraddhayā
pūtam sutam somam mahādhvare pītvā
vayam prayāsyāmaḥ mudam mantrapuraḥsaram
63. (They continued,) "By whom this best among sacrificers was deposed from his own kingdom - whose Soma, purified and pressed with (śraddhā) faith, will we drink at a great (yajña) sacrifice and thereby achieve joy, accompanied by (mantras) sacred chants?"
पक्षिण ऊचुः ।
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा कौशिकोऽतिरुषान्वितः ।
शशाप तान् मनुष्यत्वं सर्वे यूयमवाप्स्यथ ॥६४॥
64. pakṣiṇa ūcuḥ .
iti teṣāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā kauśiko'tiruṣānvitaḥ .
śaśāpa tān manuṣyatvaṃ sarve yūyamavāpsyatha.
64. pakṣiṇaḥ ūcuḥ iti teṣām vacaḥ śrutvā kauśikaḥ atiruṣā
anvitaḥ śaśāpa tān manuṣyatvam sarve yūyam avāpsyatha
64. The birds said: Having heard their words, Kauśika, filled with great anger, cursed them, saying, "All of you will attain human nature."
प्रसादितश्च तैः
प्राह पुनरेव महामुनिः ॥६५॥

65. And being propitiated by them, the great sage (Kauśika) spoke again.
न दारसंग्रहश्चैव भविता न च मत्सरः ।
कामक्रोधविनिर्मुक्ता भविष्यथ सुराः पुनः ॥६६॥
66. na dārasaṃgrahaścaiva bhavitā na ca matsaraḥ .
kāmakrodhavinirmuktā bhaviṣyatha surāḥ punaḥ.
66. na dārasaṅgrahaḥ ca eva bhavitā na ca matsaraḥ
kāmakrodhavinirmuktāḥ bhaviṣyatha surāḥ punaḥ
66. "There will be no marriage, nor will there be envy. Freed from desire (kāma) and anger, you will become gods again."
ततोऽवतेरुरंशैः स्वैर्देवास्ते कुरुवेश्मनि ।
द्रौपदीगर्भसम्भूताः पञ्च वै पाण्डुनन्दनाः ॥६७॥
67. tato'vateruraṃśaiḥ svairdevāste kuruveśmani .
draupadīgarbhasambhūtāḥ pañca vai pāṇḍunandanāḥ.
67. tataḥ avateruḥ aṃśaiḥ svaiḥ devāḥ te kuru-veśmani
draupadī-garbhasambhūtāḥ pañca vai pāṇḍunandanāḥ
67. Then, those gods descended with their own portions into the Kuru household, manifesting as the five sons of Pāṇḍu, born from Draupadī's womb.
एतस्मात् कारणात् पञ्च पाण्डवेया महारथाः ।
न दारसंग्रहं प्राप्ताः शापात् तस्य महामुनेः ॥६८॥
68. etasmāt kāraṇāt pañca pāṇḍaveyā mahārathāḥ .
na dārasaṃgrahaṃ prāptāḥ śāpāt tasya mahāmuneḥ.
68. etasmāt kāraṇāt pañca pāṇḍaveyāḥ mahārathāḥ na
dārasaṃgraham prāptāḥ śāpāt tasya mahāmuneḥ
68. For this reason, the five great chariot-warriors, the Pāṇḍavas, could not marry due to the curse of that great sage (mahāmuni).
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं पाण्डवेयकथाश्रयम् ।
प्रश्नं चतुष्टयं गीतं किमन्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥६९॥
69. etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ pāṇḍaveyakathāśrayam .
praśnaṃ catuṣṭayaṃ gītaṃ kimanyacchrotumicchasi.
69. etat te sarvam ākhyātam pāṇḍaveyakathāśrayam
praśnam catuṣṭayam gītam kim anyat śrotum icchasi
69. All of this, which is based on the story of the Pāṇḍavas, has been narrated to you. The four questions have been explained. What else do you wish to hear?
