मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः स्वनगरं प्राप्य तं ददर्श द्विजं नृपः ।
समेतं भार्यया चैव शीलवत्या मुदान्वितम् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ svanagaraṃ prāpya taṃ dadarśa dvijaṃ nṛpaḥ .
sametaṃ bhāryayā caiva śīlavatyā mudānvitam.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, upon reaching his own city, the king saw that brahmin (dvija), accompanied by his virtuous wife and filled with joy.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
राजवर्य कृतार्थोऽस्मि यतो धर्मो हि रक्षितः ।
धर्मज्ञनेह भवता भार्यामानयता मम ॥२॥
2. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
rājavarya kṛtārtho'smi yato dharmo hi rakṣitaḥ .
dharmajñaneha bhavatā bhāryāmānayatā mama.
2. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca rājavarya kṛtārthaḥ asmi yataḥ dharmaḥ
hi rakṣitaḥ dharmajñena iha bhavatā bhāryām ānayatā mama
2. The brahmin (brāhmaṇa) said: "O best of kings, I am fulfilled because the natural law (dharma) has indeed been protected here by you, the knower of natural law (dharma), through the return of my wife."
राजोवाच ।
कृतार्थस्त्वं द्विजश्रेष्ठ निजधर्मानुपालनात् ।
वयं सङ्कटिनो विप्र येषां पत्नी न वेश्मनि ॥३॥
3. rājovāca .
kṛtārthastvaṃ dvijaśreṣṭha nijadharmānupālanāt .
vayaṃ saṅkaṭino vipra yeṣāṃ patnī na veśmani.
3. rājā uvāca kṛtārthaḥ tvam dvijaśreṣṭha nijadharmānupālanāt
vayam saṅkaṭinaḥ vipra yeṣām patnī na veśmani
3. The king said: "O best of brahmins, you are fulfilled by your adherence to your own natural law (dharma). We, O brahmin (vipra), are truly troubled, we whose wives are not present in our homes."
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
नरेन्द्र सा हि विपिने भक्षिता श्वनापदैर्यदि ।
अलन्तया किमन्यस्या न पाणिर्गृह्यते त्वया ।
क्रोधस्य वशमागम्य धर्मो न रक्षितस्त्वया ॥४॥
4. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
narendra sā hi vipine bhakṣitā śvanāpadairyadi .
alantayā kimanyasyā na pāṇirgṛhyate tvayā .
krodhasya vaśamāgamya dharmo na rakṣitastvayā.

bhakṣitā śvanāpadaiḥ yadi | alam tayā kim
anyasyāḥ na pāṇiḥ gṛhyate tvayā | krodhasya

4. The Brahmin said, "O King, if she was indeed devoured by wild animals in the forest, then what is the use of her? Why do you not take the hand of another woman? Having fallen under the sway of anger, you have not protected the natural law (dharma)."
राजोवाच ।
न भक्षिता मे दयिता श्वापदैः सा हि जीवति ।
अविदूषितचारित्रा कथमेतत्करोम्यहम् ॥५॥
5. rājovāca .
na bhakṣitā me dayitā śvāpadaiḥ sā hi jīvati .
avidūṣitacāritrā kathametatkaromyaham.
5. rājā uvāca | na bhakṣitā me dayitā śvāpadaiḥ sā hi
jīvati | avidūṣitacāritrā katham etat karomi aham
5. The King said, "My beloved was not devoured by wild animals; indeed, she is alive. How can I act in this way towards a woman whose character is unblemished?"
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
यदि जीवति ते भार्या न चैव व्यभिचारिणी ।
तदपत्नीकताजन्म किं पापं क्रियते त्वया ॥६॥
6. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
yadi jīvati te bhāryā na caiva vyabhicāriṇī .
tadapatnīkatājanma kiṃ pāpaṃ kriyate tvayā.
6. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca | yadi jīvati te bhāryā na ca eva
vyabhicāriṇī | tat apatnīkṛtajanma kim pāpam kriyate tvayā
6. The Brahmin said, "If your wife is alive and indeed not unchaste, then what sin (karma) are you committing by treating her as if she were not your wife?"
राजोवाच ।
आनीतापि हि सा विप्र प्रतिकूला सदैव मे ।
दुः खाय न सुखायालं तस्या मैत्री न वै मयि ।
तथा त्वं कुरु यत्नं मे यथा सा वशगामिनी ॥७॥
7. rājovāca .
ānītāpi hi sā vipra pratikūlā sadaiva me .
duḥ khāya na sukhāyālaṃ tasyā maitrī na vai mayi .
tathā tvaṃ kuru yatnaṃ me yathā sā vaśagāminī.
7. rājā uvāca | ānītā api hi sā vipra
pratikūlā sadā eva me | duḥkhāya na sukhāya
alam tasyāḥ maitrī na vai mayi | tathā
tvam kuru yatnam me yathā sā vaśagāminī
7. The King said, "Even though she was brought back, O Brahmin, she is always hostile to me. She brings only sorrow, not happiness; indeed, she has no friendship for me. Therefore, please make an effort for me so that she becomes obedient."
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
तव संप्रीतये तस्या वरेष्टिरुपकारिणी ।
क्रियते मित्रकामैर्या मित्रविन्दां करोमि ताम् ॥८॥
8. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
tava saṃprītaye tasyā vareṣṭirupakāriṇī .
kriyate mitrakāmairyā mitravindāṃ karomi tām.
8. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca tava saṃprītaye tasyāḥ vareṣṭiḥ
upakāriṇī kriyate mitrakāmaiḥ yā mitravindām karomi tām
8. The brahmin said: 'For your pleasure and her satisfaction, this excellent and beneficial sacrificial rite (yajña) is performed by those who seek friendship. Through this, I will establish her as Mitravindā.'
अप्रीतयोः प्रीतिकरो सा हि संजननी परम् ।
भार्यापत्योर्मनुष्येन्द्र तान्तवेष्टिं करोम्यहम् ॥९॥
9. aprītayoḥ prītikaro sā hi saṃjananī param .
bhāryāpatyormanuṣyendra tāntaveṣṭiṃ karomyaham.

bhāryāpatyoḥ manuṣyendra tāntaveṣṭim karomi aham
9. he manuṣyendra sā hi aprītayoḥ param saṃjananī
prītikaraḥ aham bhāryāpatyoḥ tāntaveṣṭim karomi
9. Indeed, she is the supreme creator of affection for a displeased couple. O lord of men (manuṣyendra), I perform the tāntaveṣṭi ritual for the wife and husband.
यत्र तिष्ठति सा सुभ्रूस्तव भार्या महीपते ।
तस्मादानोयतां सा ते परां प्रीतिमुपैष्यति ॥१०॥
10. yatra tiṣṭhati sā subhrūstava bhāryā mahīpate .
tasmādānoyatāṃ sā te parāṃ prītimupaiṣyati.
10. yatra tiṣṭhati sā subhrūḥ tava bhāryā mahīpate
tasmāt ānīyatām sā te parām prītim upaiṣyati
10. O King, wherever that beautiful-browed one, your wife, resides, let her be brought from there. She will attain supreme satisfaction for you.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः स तु सम्भारानशेषानवनीपतिः ।
आनिनाय चकारेष्टिं स च तां द्विजसत्तमः ॥११॥
11. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityuktaḥ sa tu sambhārānaśeṣānavanīpatiḥ .
ānināya cakāreṣṭiṃ sa ca tāṃ dvijasattamaḥ.
11. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ tu sambhārān aśeṣān
avanīpatiḥ ānināya cakāra iṣṭim saḥ ca tām dvijasattamaḥ
11. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'Thus addressed, that king indeed brought all the necessary preparations. And that best of brahmins performed that Vedic ritual (yajña).'
सप्तकृत्वः स तु तदा चकारेष्टिं पुनः पुनः ।
तस्य राज्ञो द्विजश्रेष्ठो भार्यासम्पादनाय वै ॥१२॥
12. saptakṛtvaḥ sa tu tadā cakāreṣṭiṃ punaḥ punaḥ .
tasya rājño dvijaśreṣṭho bhāryāsampādanāya vai.
12. saptakṛtvaḥ saḥ tu tadā cakāra iṣṭim punaḥ punaḥ
tasya rājñaḥ dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ bhāryāsampādanāya vai
12. Then, for that king, the foremost of brahmins (dvijāśreṣṭha) repeatedly performed the sacrificial rite (iṣṭi) seven times, specifically for the purpose of acquiring a wife.
यदारोपितमैत्रीन्ताममन्यत महामुनिः ।
स्वभर्तरि तदा विप्रस्तमुवाच नराधिपम् ॥१३॥
13. yadāropitamaitrīntāmamanyata mahāmuniḥ .
svabhartari tadā viprastamuvāca narādhipam.
13. yadā āropitamaitrīantām amanyata mahāmuniḥ
svabhartari tadā vipraḥ tam uvāca narādhipam
13. When the great sage (mahāmuni) considered that the purpose of their friendship had been fulfilled, then the brahmin (vipra) spoke to that king (narādhipa) concerning his own kingly status.
आनीयतां नरश्रेष्ठ या तवेष्टात्मनोऽन्तिकम् ।
भुङ्क्ष्व भोगांस्तया सार्धं यज यज्ञांस्तथादृतः ॥१४॥
14. ānīyatāṃ naraśreṣṭha yā taveṣṭātmano'ntikam .
bhuṅkṣva bhogāṃstayā sārdhaṃ yaja yajñāṃstathādṛtaḥ.
14. ānīyatām naraśreṣṭha yā tava iṣṭā ātmanaḥ antikam
bhuṅkṣva bhogān tayā sārdham yaja yajñān tathā ādṛtaḥ
14. he naraśreṣṭha yā tava iṣṭā ātmanaḥ antikam sā ānīyatām
tayā sārdham bhogān bhuṅkṣva tathā ca ādṛtaḥ yajñān yaja
14. O best of men (naraśreṣṭha), let her who is desired by you and dear to your soul (ātman) be brought. Enjoy pleasures with her. Likewise, perform Vedic rituals (yajña) with reverence.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्तस्तेन विप्रेण भूपालो विस्मितस्तदा ।
सस्मार तं महावीर्यं सत्यसन्धं निशाचरम् ॥१५॥
15. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityuktastena vipreṇa bhūpālo vismitastadā .
sasmāra taṃ mahāvīryaṃ satyasandhaṃ niśācaram.
15. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ tena vipreṇa bhūpālaḥ vismitaḥ
tadā sasmāra tam mahāvīryam satyasandham niśācaram
15. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having been spoken to in this manner by that brahmin (vipra), the king (bhūpāla) was astonished at that time. He then remembered that exceedingly powerful (mahāvīrya) night-wanderer (niśācara) who was true to his word (satyasandha).
स्मृतस्तेन तदा सद्यः समुपेत्य नराधिपम् ।
किं करोमीति सोऽप्याह प्रणिपत्य महामुने ॥१६॥
16. smṛtastena tadā sadyaḥ samupetya narādhipam .
kiṃ karomīti so'pyāha praṇipatya mahāmune.
16. smṛtaḥ tena tadā sadyaḥ samupetya narādhipam
kim karomi iti saḥ api āha praṇipatya mahāmune
16. O great sage, as soon as he (the king) remembered him (the sage), the sage immediately approached the king and, bowing down, asked, 'What shall I do?'
ततस्तेन नरेन्द्रेण विस्तरेण निवेदिते ।
गत्वा पातालमादाय राजपत्नीमुपाययौ ॥१७॥
17. tatastena narendreṇa vistareṇa nivedite .
gatvā pātālamādāya rājapatnīmupāyayau.
17. tataḥ tena narendreṇa vistareṇa nivedite
gatvā pātālam ādāya rājapatnīm upāyayau
17. Then, after the king explained the situation in detail, he (the sage) went to the netherworld (pātāla), brought the queen, and returned.
आनीता चातिहार्देन सा ददर्श तदा पतिम् ।
उवाच च प्रसीदेति भूयोभूयो मुदान्विता ॥१८॥
18. ānītā cātihārdena sā dadarśa tadā patim .
uvāca ca prasīdeti bhūyobhūyo mudānvitā.
18. ānītā ca ati-hārdena sā dadarśa tadā patim
uvāca ca prasīda iti bhūyaḥ bhūyaḥ mudā anvitā
18. And when she was brought back, she saw her husband with immense affection. Filled with joy, she repeatedly said, 'Please be gracious!'
ततः स राजा रभसा परिष्वज्याह मानिनीम् ।
प्रिये प्रसन्न एवाहं भूयोऽप्येवं ब्रवीषि किम् ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sa rājā rabhasā pariṣvajyāha māninīm .
priye prasanna evāhaṃ bhūyo'pyevaṃ bravīṣi kim.
19. tataḥ saḥ rājā rabhasā pariṣvajya āha māninīm priye
prasannaḥ eva aham bhūyaḥ api evam bravīṣi kim
19. Then, the king impetuously embraced his proud wife and said, 'My dear, I am indeed pleased. Why do you keep asking this again?'
पत्न्युवाच ।
यदि प्रिसादप्रवणं नरेन्द्र मयि ते मनः ।
तदेतदभियाचे त्वां तत् कुरुष्व ममार्हणम् ॥२०॥
20. patnyuvāca .
yadi prisādapravaṇaṃ narendra mayi te manaḥ .
tadetadabhiyāce tvāṃ tat kuruṣva mamārhaṇam.
20. patnī uvāca yadi prasādapravaṇaṃ narendra mayi te
manaḥ tat etat abhiyāce tvām tat kuruṣva mama arhaṇam
20. The wife said, 'O king, if your mind is favorably disposed towards me, then I make this request of you; please fulfill it as my honor (arhaṇam).'
राजोवाच ।
निः शङ्कं ब्रूहि मत्तो यद्भवात्या किञ्चिदीप्सितम् ।
तदलभ्यं न ते भीरु तवायत्तोऽस्मि नान्यथा ॥२१॥
21. rājovāca .
niḥ śaṅkaṃ brūhi matto yadbhavātyā kiñcidīpsitam .
tadalabhyaṃ na te bhīru tavāyatto'smi nānyathā.
21. rājā uvāca niḥśaṅkaṃ brūhi mattaḥ yat bhavatyā kiñcit
īpsitam tat alabhyaṃ na te bhīru tava āyattaḥ asmi na anyathā
21. The king said, 'Speak without hesitation (niḥśaṅkam) whatever you desire from me. Nothing (tat) is unattainable (alabhya) for you, O timid one; I am at your disposal (āyatta) and not otherwise.'
पत्न्युवाच ।
मदर्थं तेन नागेन सुता शप्ता सखी मम ।
मूका भविष्यसीत्याह सा च मूकत्वमागता ॥२२॥
22. patnyuvāca .
madarthaṃ tena nāgena sutā śaptā sakhī mama .
mūkā bhaviṣyasītyāha sā ca mūkatvamāgatā.
22. patnī uvāca madarthaṃ tena nāgena sutā śaptā sakhī
mama mūkā bhaviṣyasi iti āha sā ca mūkatvaṃ āgatā
22. The wife said, 'For my sake, that nāga (nāga) cursed my friend's daughter, saying, "You will be mute." And she has indeed become mute.'
तस्याः प्रतिक्रियां प्रीत्या मम शक्नोति चेद्भवान् ।
वाग्विघातप्रशान्त्यर्थं ततः किं न कृतं मम ॥२३॥
23. tasyāḥ pratikriyāṃ prītyā mama śaknoti cedbhavān .
vāgvighātapraśāntyarthaṃ tataḥ kiṃ na kṛtaṃ mama.
23. tasyāḥ pratikriyāṃ prītyā mama śaknoti cet bhavān
vāg-vighāta-praśāntyarthaṃ tataḥ kim na kṛtaṃ mama
23. If you, with affection (prītyā), are able to provide a remedy (pratikriyā) for her, for the removal of the impediment to speech (vāg-vighāta-praśāntyartham), then what would not have been done for me (mama)?
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः स राजा तं विप्रमाहास्मिन् कीदृशी क्रिया ।
तन्मूकतापनोदाय स च तं प्राह पार्थिवम् ॥२४॥
24. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ sa rājā taṃ vipramāhāsmin kīdṛśī kriyā .
tanmūkatāpanodāya sa ca taṃ prāha pārthivam.
24. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | tataḥ saḥ rājā tam vipram āha asmin kīdṛśī
kriyā | tat mūkatā apanodāya saḥ ca tam prāha pārthivam
24. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then that king asked the Brahmin, "What kind of rite (kriyā) should be performed in this matter, for the removal of her muteness?" Thereupon, that (Brahmin) spoke to the king.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
भूप सारस्वतीमिष्टिं करोमि वचनात्तव ।
पत्नी तवेयमानृण्यं यातु तद्वाक्प्रवर्तनात् ॥२५॥
25. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
bhūpa sārasvatīmiṣṭiṃ karomi vacanāttava .
patnī taveyamānṛṇyaṃ yātu tadvākpravartanāt.
25. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca | bhūpa sārasvatīm iṣṭim karomi vacanāt
tava | patnī tava iyam ānṛṇyam yātu tat vāk pravartanāt
25. The Brahmin said: "O King, I shall perform a Sarasvatī ritual (iṣṭi) at your command. May this wife of yours be freed from debt through the restoration of her speech."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इष्टिं सारस्वतीं चक्रे तदर्थं स द्विजोत्तमः ।
सारस्वतानि सूक्तानि जजाप च समाहितः ॥२६॥
26. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iṣṭiṃ sārasvatīṃ cakre tadarthaṃ sa dvijottamaḥ .
sārasvatāni sūktāni jajāpa ca samāhitaḥ.
26. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | iṣṭim sārasvatīm cakre tat artham
saḥ dvijottamaḥ | sārasvatāni sūktāni jajāpa ca samāhitaḥ
26. Mārkaṇḍeya said: That excellent Brahmin (dvijottama) performed the Sarasvatī ritual (iṣṭi) for that purpose. Being fully concentrated, he also chanted the Sarasvatī hymns (sūktas).
ततः प्रवृत्तवाक्यान्तां गर्गः प्राह रसातले ।
उपकारः सखीभर्त्रा कृतोऽयमतिदुष्करः ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ pravṛttavākyāntāṃ gargaḥ prāha rasātale .
upakāraḥ sakhībhartrā kṛto'yamatiduṣkaraḥ.
27. tataḥ pravṛttavākyāntām gargaḥ prāha rasātale
| upakāraḥ sakhībhartrā kṛtaḥ ayam atiduṣkaraḥ
27. Then Garga spoke to her, whose speech had commenced, in Rasātala: "This extremely difficult favor (upakāra) has been performed by your friend's husband."
इत्थं ज्ञानं समासाद्य नन्दा शीघ्रगतिः पुरम् ।
ततो राज्ञीं परिष्वज्य स्वसखीमुरगात्मजा ॥२८॥
28. itthaṃ jñānaṃ samāsādya nandā śīghragatiḥ puram .
tato rājñīṃ pariṣvajya svasakhīmuragātmajā.
28. ittham jñānam samāsādya nandā śīghragatiḥ puram
tataḥ rājñīm pariṣvajya svasakhīm uragātmajā
28. Thus, having acquired this knowledge, Nandā, moving swiftly, returned to the palace. Thereupon, the daughter of the serpent embraced her friend, the queen.
तञ्च संस्तूय भूपालं कल्याणोक्त्या पुनः पुनः ।
उवाच मधुरं नागी कृतासनपरिग्रहा ॥२९॥
29. tañca saṃstūya bhūpālaṃ kalyāṇoktyā punaḥ punaḥ .
uvāca madhuraṃ nāgī kṛtāsanaparigrahā.
29. tam ca saṃstūya bhūpālam kalyāṇoktyā punaḥ
punaḥ uvāca madhuram nāgī kṛtāsanaparigrahā
29. And having praised that king repeatedly with auspicious words, the Nāgī, who had taken a seat, then spoke sweetly.
उपकारः कृतो वीर भवता यो ममाधुना ।
तेनास्म्याकृष्टहृदया यद्ब्रवीमि शृणुष्व तत् ॥३०॥
30. upakāraḥ kṛto vīra bhavatā yo mamādhunā .
tenāsmyākṛṣṭahṛdayā yadbravīmi śṛṇuṣva tat.
30. upakāraḥ kṛtaḥ vīra bhavatā yaḥ mama adhunā
tena asmi ākṛṣṭahṛdayā yat bravīmi śṛṇuṣva tat
30. O hero, by the help you have rendered me now, my heart has been captivated. Therefore, please listen to what I am about to say.
तव पुत्रो महावीर्यो भविष्यति नराधिप ।
तस्माप्रतिहतं चक्रमस्यां भुवि भविष्यति ॥३१॥
31. tava putro mahāvīryo bhaviṣyati narādhipa .
tasmāpratihataṃ cakramasyāṃ bhuvi bhaviṣyati.
31. tava putraḥ mahāvīryaḥ bhaviṣyati narādhipa
tasmāt apratihatam cakram asyām bhuvi bhaviṣyati
31. O ruler of men, your son will be greatly powerful. Therefore, his undisputed sovereignty (cakram) will prevail on this earth.
सर्वार्थशास्त्रतत्त्वज्ञो धर्मानुष्ठानतत्परः ।
मन्वन्तरेश्वरो धीमान् भविष्यति स वै मनुः ॥३२॥
32. sarvārthaśāstratattvajño dharmānuṣṭhānatatparaḥ .
manvantareśvaro dhīmān bhaviṣyati sa vai manuḥ.
32. sarvārthaśāstratattvajñaḥ dharmānuṣṭhānatatparaḥ
manvantareśvaraḥ dhīmān bhaviṣyati sa vai manuḥ
32. That wise one will indeed become Manu, being knowledgeable in the essence of all treatises concerning human aims, dedicated to the proper observance of his intrinsic nature (dharma), and the lord of a Manvantara.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति दत्वा वरं तस्मै नागराजसुता ततः ।
सखीं तां संपरिष्वज्य पातालमगमन्मुने ॥३३॥
33. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti datvā varaṃ tasmai nāgarājasutā tataḥ .
sakhīṃ tāṃ saṃpariṣvajya pātālamagamanmune.
33. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca iti datvā varam tasmai nāgarājasutā
tataḥ sakhīm tām saṃpariṣvajya pātālam agamat mune
33. Markaṇḍeya said: "Having thus granted a boon to him, the daughter of the Nāga king then embraced that friend of hers and went to Pātāla, O sage."
तत्र तस्य तया सार्धं रमतः पृथिवीपतेः ।
जगाम कालः सुमहान् प्रजाः पालयतस्तथा ॥३४॥
34. tatra tasya tayā sārdhaṃ ramataḥ pṛthivīpateḥ .
jagāma kālaḥ sumahān prajāḥ pālayatastathā.

34. There, a very long time passed for that king, who was enjoying with her while also ruling his subjects.
ततः स तस्यान्तनयो जज्ञे राज्ञो महात्मनः ।
पौर्णमास्यां यथा कान्तश्चन्द्रः संपूर्णमण्डलः ॥३५॥
35. tataḥ sa tasyāntanayo jajñe rājño mahātmanaḥ .
paurṇamāsyāṃ yathā kāntaścandraḥ saṃpūrṇamaṇḍalaḥ.
35. tataḥ sa tasyāntanayaḥ jajñe rājñaḥ mahātmanaḥ
paurṇamāsyām yathā kāntaḥ candraḥ saṃpūrṇamaṇḍalaḥ
35. Then, her son was born to that great-souled king, like the charming, full-orbed moon on a full moon night.
तस्मिन् जाते मुदं प्रापुः प्रजाः सर्वा महात्मनि ।
देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुः पुष्पवृष्टिः पपात च ॥३६॥
36. tasmin jāte mudaṃ prāpuḥ prajāḥ sarvā mahātmani .
devadundubhayo neduḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ca.
36. tasmin jāte mudam prāpuḥ prajāḥ sarvāḥ mahātmani
devadundubhayaḥ neduḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ca
36. When that great soul (mahātman) was born, all the people experienced joy. The celestial drums sounded, and a rain of flowers fell.
तस्य दृष्ट्वा वपुः कान्तं भविष्यं शीलमेव च ।
औत्तमश्चेति मुनयो नाम चक्रुः समागताः ॥३७॥
37. tasya dṛṣṭvā vapuḥ kāntaṃ bhaviṣyaṃ śīlameva ca .
auttamaśceti munayo nāma cakruḥ samāgatāḥ.
37. tasya dṛṣṭvā vapuḥ kāntam bhaviṣyam śīlam eva ca
auttamaḥ ca iti munayaḥ nāma cakruḥ samāgatāḥ
37. Having seen his beautiful form and also his future character, the assembled sages named him "Auttama."
जातोऽयमुत्तमे वंशे तत्र काले तथोत्तमे ।
उत्तमावयवस्तेन औत्तमोऽयं भविष्यति ॥३८॥
38. jāto'yamuttame vaṃśe tatra kāle tathottame .
uttamāvayavastena auttamo'yaṃ bhaviṣyati.
38. jātaḥ ayam uttame vaṃśe tatra kāle tathā uttame
uttamāvayavaḥ tena auttamaḥ ayam bhaviṣyati
38. “This one is born in an excellent lineage, at an excellent time, and possesses excellent bodily features. Therefore, he will be Auttama.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
उत्तमस्य सुतः सोऽथ नाम्ना ख्यातस्तथौत्तमः ।
मनुरासीत्तत्प्रभावो भागुरे श्रूयतां मम ॥३९॥
39. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
uttamasya sutaḥ so'tha nāmnā khyātastathauttamaḥ .
manurāsīttatprabhāvo bhāgure śrūyatāṃ mama.
39. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca uttamasya sutaḥ saḥ atha nāmnā khyātaḥ
tathā auttamaḥ manuḥ āsīt tatprabhāvaḥ bhāgure śrūyatām mama
39. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then that son of Uttama, renowned by the name Auttama, was a Manu (manu). O Bhāguri, listen as I recount his greatness."
उत्तमाख्यानमखिलं जन्म चैवोत्तमस्य च ।
नित्यं शृणोति विद्वेषं स कदाचिन्न गच्छति ॥४०॥
40. uttamākhyānamakhilaṃ janma caivottamasya ca .
nityaṃ śṛṇoti vidveṣaṃ sa kadācinna gacchati.
40. uttama ākhyānam akhilam janma ca eva uttamasya
ca nityam śṛṇoti vidveṣam sa kadācit na gacchati
40. One who constantly listens to this entire excellent narrative, as well as the account of the birth of the supreme being (uttama), will never experience hatred.
इष्टैर्दारैस्तथा पुत्रैर्बन्धुभिर्वा कदाचन ।
वियोगो नास्य भविता शृण्वतः पठतोऽपि वा ॥४१॥
41. iṣṭairdāraistathā putrairbandhubhirvā kadācana .
viyogo nāsya bhavitā śṛṇvataḥ paṭhato'pi vā.
41. iṣṭaiḥ dāraiḥ tathā putraiḥ bandhubhiḥ vā kadācana
viyogaḥ na asya bhavitā śṛṇvataḥ paṭhataḥ api vā
41. He who listens or reads this narrative will never experience separation from his beloved wives, sons, or relatives.
तस्य मन्वन्तरं ब्रह्मन् वदतो मे निशामय ।
श्रूयतां तत्र यश्चेन्द्रो ये च देवास्तथर्षयः ॥४२॥
42. tasya manvantaraṃ brahman vadato me niśāmaya .
śrūyatāṃ tatra yaścendro ye ca devāstatharṣayaḥ.
42. tasya manvantaram brahman vadataḥ me niśāmaya
śrūyatām tatra yaḥ ca indraḥ ye ca devāḥ tathā ṛṣayaḥ
42. O brahmin (brahman), listen to me as I describe his (Uttama's) "manvantara". May it be heard who was Indra there, and who were the gods, as well as the sages.
