मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवन्तु वदतस्तस्य द्विजपुत्रस्य पावकः ।
गार्हपत्यः शरीरे तु सन्निधानमथाकरोत् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
evantu vadatastasya dvijaputrasya pāvakaḥ .
gārhapatyaḥ śarīre tu sannidhānamathākarot.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca evam tu vadataḥ tasya dvijaputrasya
pāvakaḥ gārhapatyaḥ śarīre tu sannidhānam atha akarot
1. Markaṇḍeya said: As that son of a brahmin (dvijaputra) was speaking thus, the Gārhapatya fire (pāvakaḥ) then manifested its presence in his body.
तेन चाधिष्ठितः सोऽथ प्रभामण्डलमध्यगः ।
व्यदीपयत तं देशं मूर्तिमानिव हव्यवाट् ॥२॥
2. tena cādhiṣṭhitaḥ so'tha prabhāmaṇḍalamadhyagaḥ .
vyadīpayata taṃ deśaṃ mūrtimāniva havyavāṭ.
2. tena ca adhiṣṭhitaḥ saḥ atha prabhāmaṇḍalamadhyagaḥ
vyadīpayata tam deśam mūrtimān iva havyavāṭ
2. And then, possessed by him (Agni), standing in the middle of a halo of light, he illuminated that region as if he were the embodied fire god (havyavāṭ).
तस्यास्तु सुतरां तत्र तादृग्रूपे द्विजन्मनि ।
अनुरागोऽभवद्विप्रं पश्यन्त्या देवयोषितः ॥३॥
3. tasyāstu sutarāṃ tatra tādṛgrūpe dvijanmani .
anurāgo'bhavadvipraṃ paśyantyā devayoṣitaḥ.
3. tasyāḥ tu sutarām tatra tādṛgrūpe dvijanmani
anurāgaḥ abhavat vipram paśyantyāḥ devayoṣitaḥ
3. As the divine woman (devayoṣit) watched that Brahmin (dvijanman) with such a radiant form, her affection for him grew exceedingly.
ततः सोऽधिष्ठितस्तेन हव्यवाहेन तत्क्षणात् ।
यथापूर्वं तथा गन्तुं प्रवृत्तो द्विजनन्दनः ॥४॥
4. tataḥ so'dhiṣṭhitastena havyavāhena tatkṣaṇāt .
yathāpūrvaṃ tathā gantuṃ pravṛtto dvijanandanaḥ.
4. tataḥ saḥ adhiṣṭhitaḥ tena havyavāhena tatkṣaṇāt
yathāpūrvam tathā gantum pravṛttaḥ dvijanandanaḥ
4. Then, immediately possessed by the fire god (havyavāh), that son of a Brahmin (dvijanandana) began to depart just as he had done before.
जगाम च त्वरायुक्तस्तया देव्या निरीक्षितः ।
आदृष्टिपातात्तन्वङ्ग्या निश्वासोत्कम्पिकन्धरम् ॥५॥
5. jagāma ca tvarāyuktastayā devyā nirīkṣitaḥ .
ādṛṣṭipātāttanvaṅgyā niśvāsotkampikandharam.
5. jagāma ca tvarāyuktaḥ tayā devyā nirīkṣitaḥ
ādṛṣṭipātāt tanvaṅgyā niśvāsatkampikandharam
5. And he departed swiftly, observed by that divine woman (devī), the slender-limbed one (tanvaṅgī), whose neck was trembling with sighs, as far as her gaze could reach.
ततः क्षणेनैव तदा निजगेहमवाप्य सः ।
यथाप्रोक्तं द्विजश्रेष्ठश्चकार सकलाः क्रियाः ॥६॥
6. tataḥ kṣaṇenaiva tadā nijagehamavāpya saḥ .
yathāproktaṃ dvijaśreṣṭhaścakāra sakalāḥ kriyāḥ.
6. tataḥ kṣaṇena eva tadā nija geham avāpya saḥ
yathāproktam dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ cakāra sakalāḥ kriyāḥ
6. Then, immediately at that time, having reached his own home, that best among Brahmins (dvijaśreṣṭha) performed all the prescribed rituals.
अथ सा चारुसर्वाङ्गी तत्रासक्तात्ममानसा ।
निश्वासपरमा निन्ये दिनशेषं तथा निशाम् ॥७॥
7. atha sā cārusarvāṅgī tatrāsaktātmamānasā .
niśvāsaparamā ninye dinaśeṣaṃ tathā niśām.
7. atha sā cārusarvāṅgī tatrāsaktātma-mānasā
niśvāsaparamā ninye dinaśeṣam tathā niśām
7. Then, that woman of beautiful limbs, whose mind and (ātman) self were attached to him, spent the remainder of the day and the night filled with profound sighs.
निश्वसन्त्यनवद्याङ्गी हाहेति रुदती मुहुः ।
मन्दभाग्येति चात्मानं निनिन्द मदिरेक्षणा ॥८॥
8. niśvasantyanavadyāṅgī hāheti rudatī muhuḥ .
mandabhāgyeti cātmānaṃ nininda madirekṣaṇā.
8. niśvasantī anavadyāṅgī hā hā iti rudatī muhuḥ
mandabhāgyā iti ca ātmānam nininda madirekṣaṇā
8. Sighing and repeatedly crying "Alas, alas!", the faultless-limbed woman, with intoxicating eyes, reproached her own (ātman) self, saying, "I am unfortunate."
न विहारे न चाहारे रमणीये न वा वने ।
न कन्दरेषु रम्येषु सा बबन्ध तदा रतिम् ॥९॥
9. na vihāre na cāhāre ramaṇīye na vā vane .
na kandareṣu ramyeṣu sā babandha tadā ratim.
9. na vihāre na ca āhāre ramaṇīye na vā vane
na kandareṣu ramyeṣu sā babandha tadā ratim
9. At that time, she found no delight in recreation, nor in food, nor in a beautiful forest, nor in charming caves.
चकार रममाणे च चक्रवाकयुगे स्पृहाम् ।
मुक्ता तेन वरारोहा निनिन्द निजयौवनम् ॥१०॥
10. cakāra ramamāṇe ca cakravākayuge spṛhām .

10. She longed for the sporting pair of cakravāka birds. Abandoned by him, the beautiful-hipped woman lamented her own youth.
क्वागताहमिमं शैलं दुष्टदैवबलात्कृता ।
क्व च प्राप्तः स मे दृष्टेर्गोचरं तादृशो नरः ॥११॥
11. kvāgatāhamimaṃ śailaṃ duṣṭadaivabalātkṛtā .
kva ca prāptaḥ sa me dṛṣṭergocaraṃ tādṛśo naraḥ.
11. kva āgatā aham imam śailam duṣṭadaivabalātkṛtā
kva ca prāptaḥ sa me dṛṣṭeḥ gocaram tādṛśaḥ naraḥ
11. How did I, compelled by the power of cruel destiny, come to this mountain? And how did such a man come into my sight?
यद्यद्य स महाभागो न मे सङ्गमुपैष्यति ।
तत्कामाग्निरवश्यं मां क्षपयिष्यति दुः सहः ॥१२॥
12. yadyadya sa mahābhāgo na me saṅgamupaiṣyati .
tatkāmāgniravaśyaṃ māṃ kṣapayiṣyati duḥ sahaḥ.
12. yadi adya sa mahābhāgaḥ na me saṅgam upaiṣyati
tat kāmāgniḥ avaśyam mām kṣapayṣyati duḥsahaḥ
12. If that noble man does not unite with me today, then the unbearable fire of love will certainly consume me.
रमणीयमभूद्यत्तत्पुंस्कोकिलनिनादितम् ।
तेन हीनन्तदेवैतद्दहतीवाद्य मामलम् ॥१३॥
13. ramaṇīyamabhūdyattatpuṃskokilanināditam .
tena hīnantadevaitaddahatīvādya māmalam.
13. ramaṇīyam abhūt yat tat puṃskokilanināditam tena
hīnam tat eva etat dahati iva adya mām alam
13. That which was once a delightful place, resounded by the calls of male cuckoos, now, deprived of that very essence, burns me intensely today.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्थं सा मदनाविष्टा जगाम मुनिसत्तम ।
ववृधे च तदा रागस्तस्यास्तस्मिन् प्रतिक्षणम् ॥१४॥
14. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
itthaṃ sā madanāviṣṭā jagāma munisattama .
vavṛdhe ca tadā rāgastasyāstasmin pratikṣaṇam.
14. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca itthaṃ sā madanāviṣṭā jagāma munisattama
vavṛdhe ca tadā rāgaḥ tasyāḥ tasmin pratikṣaṇam
14. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "O best of sages, thus, she proceeded, overcome by love (madana), and then her passion for him increased moment by moment."
कलिर्नाम्ना तु गन्धर्वः सानुरागो निराकृतः ।
तया पूर्वमभूत्सोऽथ तदवस्थां ददर्श ताम् ॥१५॥
15. kalirnāmnā tu gandharvaḥ sānurāgo nirākṛtaḥ .
tayā pūrvamabhūtso'tha tadavasthāṃ dadarśa tām.
15. kaliḥ nāmnā tu gandharvaḥ sānurāgaḥ nirākṛtaḥ tayā
pūrvam abhūt saḥ atha tadavasthāṃ dadarśa tām
15. A gandharva named Kali, who had previously been enamored (sānurāgaḥ) of her but was rejected by her, then saw her in that condition.
स चिन्तयामास तदा किं न्वेषा गजगामिनी ।
निश्वासपवनम्लाना गिरावत्र वरूथिनी ॥१६॥
16. sa cintayāmāsa tadā kiṃ nveṣā gajagāminī .
niśvāsapavanamlānā girāvatra varūthinī.
16. saḥ cintayāmāsa tadā kim nu eṣā gajagāminī
niśvāspavanamlānā girau atra varūthinī
16. He then wondered: "Who can this woman (varūthinī) be, with her elephantine gait (gajagāminī), withered here on the mountain by the wind of her sighs?"
मुनिशापक्षता किंनु केनचित् किं विमानिता ।
वाष्पवारिपरिक्लिन्नमियन्धत्ते यतो मुखम् ॥१७॥
17. muniśāpakṣatā kiṃnu kenacit kiṃ vimānitā .
vāṣpavāripariklinnamiyandhatte yato mukham.
17. muniśāpakṣatā kim nu kenacit kim vimānitā
vāṣpavaripariklinnam iyam dhatte yataḥ mukham
17. He continued to wonder: "Has she been hurt by a sage's curse (muniśāpa), or has someone insulted her? Because her face is wet with tears."
ततः स दध्यौ सुचिरं तमर्थं कौतुकात् कलिः ।
ज्ञातवांश्च प्रभावेण समाधेः स यथातथम् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sa dadhyau suciraṃ tamarthaṃ kautukāt kaliḥ .
jñātavāṃśca prabhāveṇa samādheḥ sa yathātatham.
18. tataḥ sa dadhyau suciraṃ tam artham kautukāt kaliḥ
jñātavān ca prabhāveṇa samādheḥ sa yathātatham
18. Then, Kali, out of curiosity, pondered that matter for a long time. And by the power of his deep contemplation (samādhi), he accurately understood it as it truly was.
पुनः स चिन्तयामास तद्विज्ञाय मुनेः कलिः ।
ममोपपादितं साधु भाग्यैरेतत्पुराकृतैः ॥१९॥
19. punaḥ sa cintayāmāsa tadvijñāya muneḥ kaliḥ .
mamopapāditaṃ sādhu bhāgyairetatpurākṛtaiḥ.
19. punaḥ sa cintayām āsa tat vijñāya muneḥ kaliḥ
mama upapāditam sādhu bhāgyaiḥ etat purākṛtaiḥ
19. Having understood that of the sage, Kali again thought, "This has been well arranged for me by my previously accumulated good fortune (bhāgya)!"
मयैषा सानुरागेण बहुशः प्रार्थिता सती ।
निराकृतवती सेयमद्य प्राप्या भविष्यति ॥२०॥
20. mayaiṣā sānurāgeṇa bahuśaḥ prārthitā satī .
nirākṛtavatī seyamadya prāpyā bhaviṣyati.
20. mayā eṣā sānurāgeṇa bahuśaḥ prārthitā satī
nirākṛtavatī sā iyam adya prāpyā bhaviṣyati
20. This very woman, whom I, filled with love, repeatedly entreated but who (then) rejected me, will now be attainable.
मानुषे सानुरागेयं तत्र तद्रूपधारिणि ।
रंस्यते मय्यसन्दिग्धं किं कालेन करोमि तत् ॥२१॥
21. mānuṣe sānurāgeyaṃ tatra tadrūpadhāriṇi .
raṃsyate mayyasandigdhaṃ kiṃ kālena karomi tat.
21. mānuṣe sānurāgā iyam tatra tadrūpadhāriṇi
mayi asandigdham kim kālena karomi tat
21. This woman, who is loving towards a human, will undoubtedly delight in me when I assume that (human) form. Why should I wait any longer?
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
आत्मप्रभावेण ततस्तस्य रूपं द्विजन्मनः ।
कृत्वा चचार यत्रास्ते निषण्णा सा वरूथिनी ॥२२॥
22. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ātmaprabhāveṇa tatastasya rūpaṃ dvijanmanaḥ .
kṛtvā cacāra yatrāste niṣaṇṇā sā varūthinī.
22. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca ātmaprabhāveṇa tataḥ tasya rūpam
dvijanmanaḥ kṛtvā cacāra yatra āste niṣaṇṇā sā varūthinī
22. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, by his own power (ātman), having assumed the form of that brahmin (dvijanman), he went to where Varūthinī was seated.
सा तं दृष्ट्वा वरारोहा किञ्चिदुत्फुल्ललोचना ।
समेत्य प्राह तन्वङ्गी प्रसीदेति पुनः पुनः ॥२३॥
23. sā taṃ dṛṣṭvā varārohā kiñcidutphullalocanā .
sametya prāha tanvaṅgī prasīdeti punaḥ punaḥ.
23. sā tam dṛṣṭvā varārohā kiñcit utphullalocanā
sametya prāha tanvaṅgī prasīda iti punaḥ punaḥ
23. When she, the beautiful woman (varārohā), saw him, her eyes widened slightly. The slender-limbed woman (tanvaṅgī) then approached and repeatedly implored, 'Be gracious!'
त्वया त्यक्ता न सन्देहः परित्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम् ।
तत्राधर्मः कष्टतरः क्रियालोपो भविष्यति ॥२४॥
24. tvayā tyaktā na sandehaḥ parityakṣyāmi jīvitam .
tatrādharmaḥ kaṣṭataraḥ kriyālopo bhaviṣyati.
24. tvayā tyaktā na sandehaḥ parityakṣyāmi jīvitam
tatra adharmaḥ kaṣṭataraḥ kriyālopaḥ bhaviṣyati
24. If you abandon me, there is no doubt that I will give up my life. In that situation, a more grievous unrighteousness (adharma) will result: the cessation of rites.
मया समेत्य रम्येऽस्मिन् महाकन्दरकन्दरे ।
मत्परित्राणजं धर्ममवश्यं प्रतिपत्स्यसे ॥२५॥
25. mayā sametya ramye'smin mahākandarakandare .
matparitrāṇajaṃ dharmamavaśyaṃ pratipatsyase.
25. mayā sametya ramye asmin mahākandarakandare
matparitrāṇajam dharmam avaśyam pratipatsyase
25. If you come together with me in this beautiful, grand cavern, you will surely attain the merit (dharma) that arises from protecting me.
आयुषः सावशेषं मे नृनमस्ति महामते ।
निवृत्तस्तेन नूनं त्वं हृदयाह्लादकारकः ॥२६॥
26. āyuṣaḥ sāvaśeṣaṃ me nṛnamasti mahāmate .
nivṛttastena nūnaṃ tvaṃ hṛdayāhlādakārakaḥ.
26. āyuṣaḥ sāvaśeṣam me nūnam asti mahāmate |
nivṛttaḥ tena nūnam tvam hṛdayāhlādakārakaḥ
26. O great-minded one, a portion of my life certainly remains. Because of this, you, who gladden the heart, have undoubtedly refrained (from your pursuit).
कलिरुवाच ।
किं करोमि क्रियाहानिर्भवत्यत्र सतो मम ।
त्वमप्येवंविधं वाक्यं ब्रवीषि तनुमध्यमे ॥२७॥
27. kaliruvāca .
kiṃ karomi kriyāhānirbhavatyatra sato mama .
tvamapyevaṃvidhaṃ vākyaṃ bravīṣi tanumadhyame.
27. kaliḥ uvāca | kim karomi kriyāhāniḥ bhavati atra sataḥ
mama | tvam api evaṃvidham vākyam bravīṣi tanumadhyame
27. Kali said: What am I to do? For me, who is present here, a cessation of activity occurs (if I desist). Even you speak such a statement, O slender-waisted one!
तदहं सङ्कटं प्राप्तो यद्ब्रवीमि करोषि तत् ।
यदि स्यात् सङ्गमो मेऽद्य भवत्या सह नान्यथा ॥२८॥
28. tadahaṃ saṅkaṭaṃ prāpto yadbravīmi karoṣi tat .
yadi syāt saṅgamo me'dya bhavatyā saha nānyathā.
28. tat aham saṅkaṭam prāptaḥ yat bravīmi karoṣi tat |
yadi syāt saṅgamaḥ me adya bhavatyā saha na anyathā
28. Therefore, I am distressed. Please do as I say. Let there be union with you for me today, and not otherwise (is there a solution).
वरूथिनी उवाच ।
प्रसीद यद्ब्रवीषि त्वं तत्करोमि न ते मृषा ।
ब्रवीम्येतदनाशङ्कं यत्ते कार्यं मयाधुना ॥२९॥
29. varūthinī uvāca .
prasīda yadbravīṣi tvaṃ tatkaromi na te mṛṣā .
bravīmyetadanāśaṅkaṃ yatte kāryaṃ mayādhunā.
29. varūthinī uvāca | prasīda yat bravīṣi tvam tat karomi na
te mṛṣā | bravīmi etat anāśaṅkam yat te kāryam mayā adhunā
29. Varūthinī said: Be gracious! Whatever you command, that I will do. I will not speak falsely to you. I declare this without doubt: whatever is to be done by me for you, I will do it now.
कलिरुवाच ।
नाद्य संभोगसमये द्रष्टव्योऽहं त्वया वने ।
निमीलिताक्ष्याः संसर्गस्तव सुभ्रु मया सह ॥३०॥
30. kaliruvāca .
nādya saṃbhogasamaye draṣṭavyo'haṃ tvayā vane .
nimīlitākṣyāḥ saṃsargastava subhru mayā saha.
30. kaliḥ uvāca na adya saṃbhogasamaye draṣṭavyaḥ aham
tvayā vane nimīlitākṣyāḥ saṃsargaḥ tava subhru mayā saha
30. Kali said: 'Today, during our intimate union in the forest, you must not look at me. O fair-browed one, your contact with me must be with your eyes closed.'
वरूथिन्युवाच ।
एवं भवतु भद्रन्ते यथेच्छसि तथास्तु तत् ।
मया सर्वप्रकारं हि वशे स्थेयं तवाधुना ॥३१॥
31. varūthinyuvāca .
evaṃ bhavatu bhadrante yathecchasi tathāstu tat .
mayā sarvaprakāraṃ hi vaśe stheyaṃ tavādhunā.
31. varūthinī uvāca evaṃ bhavatu bhadraṃ te yathā icchasi tathā
astu tat mayā sarvaprakāraṃ hi vaśe stheyaṃ tava adhunā
31. Varūthinī said: 'So be it. May it be well with you. Whatever you desire, let it be so. Indeed, from now on, I must remain fully under your control.'
