मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
पञ्चमोऽपि मनुर्ब्रह्मन् रैवतो नाम विश्रुतः ।
तस्योत्पत्तिं विस्तरशः शृणुष्व कथयामि ते ॥१॥

1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
pañcamo'pi manurbrahman raivato nāma viśrutaḥ .

Mārkaṇḍeya said: O Brāhmaṇa, the fifth Manu, known by the name Raivata, also existed. Listen, I will tell you his origin in detail.
ऋषिरासीन्महाभाग ऋतवागिति विश्रुतः ।
तस्यापुत्रस्य पुत्रोऽभूद्रेवत्यन्ते महात्मनः ॥२॥

2. ṛṣirāsīnmahābhāga ṛtavāgiti viśrutaḥ .

ṛṣiḥ āsīt mahābhāga ṛtavāk iti viśrutaḥ tasya

There was a revered sage, renowned as Ṛtavāk. To that great-souled (mahātman) sage, who was childless, a son was born at the end of (the age of) Revati.
स तस्य विधिवच्चक्रे जातकर्मादिकाः क्रियाः ।
तथोपनयनादींश्च स चाशीलोऽभवन्मुने ॥३॥

3. sa tasya vidhivaccakre jātakarmādikāḥ kriyāḥ .
tathopanayanādīṃśca sa cāśīlo'bhavanmune.

sa tasya vidhivat cakre jātakarmādikāḥ kriyāḥ
tathā upanayana ādīn ca sa ca aśīlaḥ abhavat mune

He (Ṛtavāk) duly performed for that son the rituals such as the birth ceremony (jātakarma) and similarly those beginning with the sacred thread ceremony (upanayana). And, O sage (muni), he (the son) became a virtuous person.
यतः प्रभृति जातोऽसौ ततः प्रभृति सोऽप्यृषिः ।
दीर्घरोगपरामर्शमवाप मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥४॥

From the time he (the son) was born, from that time on, the sage (muni), his father Ṛtavāk, who was a foremost among sages (munipuṅgava), also contracted a prolonged illness.
माता तस्य परामार्ति कुष्ठरोगादिपीडिता ।
जगाम स पिता चास्य चिन्तयामास दुः खितः ॥५॥

5. mātā tasya parāmārti kuṣṭharogādipīḍitā .

His mother, afflicted by leprosy and other diseases, fell into extreme distress. And his father, saddened, worried.
किमेतदिति सोऽप्यस्य पुत्रोऽप्यत्यन्तदुर्मतिः ।
जग्राह भार्यामन्यस्य मुनिपुत्रस्य संमुखीम् ॥६॥

6. kimetaditi so'pyasya putro'pyatyantadurmatiḥ .

kim etat iti saḥ api asya putraḥ api atyantadurmatiḥ

"What is this?" (thought the father). His son, who was also extremely wicked, seized the wife of another sage's son.
ततो विषण्णमनसा ऋतवागिदमुक्तवान् ।
अपुत्रता मनुष्याणां श्रेयसे न कुपुत्रता ॥७॥

7. tato viṣaṇṇamanasā ṛtavāgidamuktavān .

Then, with a dejected mind, a truth-speaker said this: "Childlessness is for the welfare of humans, not having a bad son."
कुपुत्रो हृदयायासं सर्वदा कुरुते पितुः ।
मातुश्च स्वर्गसंस्थांश्च स्वपितॄन् पातयत्यधः ॥८॥

8. kuputro hṛdayāyāsaṃ sarvadā kurute pituḥ .

A bad son always causes heartache to his father and mother, and throws his own ancestors, who reside in heaven, downwards.
सुहृदां नोपकाराय पितॄणाञ्च न तृप्तये ।
पित्रोर्दुः खाय धिग् जन्म तस्य दुष्कृतकर्मणः ॥९॥

9. suhṛdāṃ nopakārāya pitṝṇāñca na tṛptaye .

Shame on the birth of a person whose actions (karma) are evil, bringing no benefit to friends, no satisfaction to ancestors, and only distress to parents.
धन्यास्ते तनया येषां सर्वलोकाभिसंमताः ।
परोपकारिणः शान्ताः साधुकर्मण्यनुव्रताः ॥१०॥

10. dhanyāste tanayā yeṣāṃ sarvalokābhisaṃmatāḥ .
paropakāriṇaḥ śāntāḥ sādhukarmaṇyanuvratāḥ.

dhanyāḥ te tanayāḥ yeṣām sarvalokābhisaṃmatāḥ

10.
Blessed are those children who are respected by all people, who are benevolent, peaceful, and dedicated to good actions (karma).
अनिर्वृतं तथा मन्दं परलोकपराङ्मुखम् ।
नरकाय न सद्गत्यै कुपुत्रालम्बि जन्मनः ॥११॥

11. anirvṛtaṃ tathā mandaṃ paralokaparāṅmukham .

A birth that is unfulfilled, wretched, and averse to the afterlife, dependent on a bad son, is for hell, not for a good destination.
करोति सुहृदां दैन्यमहितानां तथा मुदम् ।
अकाले च जरां पित्रोः कुपुत्रः कुरुते ध्रुवम् ॥१२॥

12. karoti suhṛdāṃ dainyamahitānāṃ tathā mudam .

A bad son surely brings wretchedness to friends and, similarly, joy to enemies. He also certainly causes premature old age to his parents.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवं सोऽत्यन्तदुष्टस्य पुत्रस्य चरितैर्मुनिः ।
दह्यमानमनोवृत्तिर्वृत्तं गर्गमपृच्छत ॥१३॥
एवं सोऽत्यन्तदुष्टस्य पुत्रस्य चरितैर्मुनिः ।

13. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
evaṃ so'tyantaduṣṭasya putrasya caritairmuniḥ .
dahyamānamanovṛttirvṛttaṃ gargamapṛcchata.

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca evam saḥ atyantaduṣṭasya putrasya
caritaiḥ muniḥ dahyamānamanovṛttiḥ vṛttam gargam apṛcchata

13.
Markandeya said: Thus, the sage, whose mind was burning with anguish due to the actions of his extremely wicked son, questioned Garga about the situation.
ऋतवागुवाच ।
सुव्रतेन पुरा वेदा गृहीता विधिवन्मया ।
समप्य वेदान् विधिवत् कृतो दारपरिग्रहः ॥१४॥

14. ṛtavāguvāca .
suvratena purā vedā gṛhītā vidhivanmayā .

ṛtavāk uvāca suvratena purā vedāḥ gṛhītāḥ vidhivat

Ṛtavāk said: "In the past, I properly learned the Vedas with strict discipline (suvrata). After properly completing my Vedic studies, I entered into marriage (dāraparigraha)."
सदारेण क्रियाः कार्याः श्रौताः स्मार्ता वषट्क्रियाः ।
न मे न्यूनाः कृताः काश्चिद्यावदद्य महामुने ॥१५॥
न मे न्यूनाः कृताः काश्चिद्यावदद्य महामुने ॥१५॥
15. sadāreṇa kriyāḥ kāryāḥ śrautāḥ smārtā vaṣaṭkriyāḥ .
na me nyūnāḥ kṛtāḥ kāścidyāvadadya mahāmune.
na me nyūnāḥ kṛtāḥ kāścidyāvadadya mahāmune.
15.
sadāreṇa kriyāḥ kāryāḥ śrautāḥ smārtāḥ vaṣaṭkriyāḥ
na me nyūnāḥ kṛtāḥ kāścit yāvat adya mahāmune
na me nyūnāḥ kṛtāḥ kāścit yāvat adya mahāmune
15.
O great sage, with my wife, I performed all Vedic (śrauta), traditional (smārta), and sacrificial (vaṣaṭkriyā) rituals. Not a single one was left incomplete by me until today.
गर्भाधानविधानेन न काममनुरुध्यता ।
पुत्रार्थं जनितश्चायं पुन्नाम्नो बिभ्यता मुने ॥१६॥

16. garbhādhānavidhānena na kāmamanurudhyatā .
putrārthaṃ janitaścāyaṃ punnāmno bibhyatā mune.

O sage, this son was conceived through the ritual of conception (garbhādhānavidhāna), not out of desire (kāma), but for the purpose of having a son, specifically by one who fears the hell called Put.
सोऽयं किमात्मदोषेण मम दोषण वा मुने ।
अस्मद्दुः खवहो जातो दौः शील्याद् बन्धुशोकदः ॥१७॥

17. so'yaṃ kimātmadoṣeṇa mama doṣaṇa vā mune .
asmadduḥ khavaho jāto dauḥ śīlyād bandhuśokadaḥ.

saḥ ayam kim ātma-doṣeṇa mama doṣeṇa vā mune

17.
O sage, is it due to his own fault or my fault that this one has become a cause of our suffering, inflicting sorrow upon his relatives because of his misconduct?
रेवत्यन्ते मुनिश्रेष्ठ जातोऽयं तनयस्तव ।
तेन दुः खाय ते दुष्टे काले यस्मादजायत ॥१८॥

18. revatyante muniśreṣṭha jāto'yaṃ tanayastava .
tena duḥ khāya te duṣṭe kāle yasmādajāyata.

O best of sages, this son of yours was born at the end of the Revatī constellation. Because he was born at such an inauspicious time, he will cause you sorrow.
न तेऽपचारो नैवास्य मातुर्नायं कुलस्य ते ।
तस्य दौः शील्यहेतुस्तु रेवत्यन्तमुपागतम् ॥१९॥

19. na te'pacāro naivāsya māturnāyaṃ kulasya te .

na te apacāraḥ na eva asya mātuḥ na ayam kulasya

The fault is neither yours, nor his mother's, nor that of your family. But the reason for his misconduct lies in his birth at the end of the Revatī constellation.
ऋतवागुवाच ।
यस्मान्ममैकपुत्रस्य रेवत्यन्तसमुद्भवम् ।
दौः शील्यमेतत् सा तस्मात् पततामाशु रेवती ॥२०॥
यस्मान्ममैकपुत्रस्य रेवत्यन्तसमुद्भवम् ।
दौः शील्यमेतत् सा तस्मात् पततामाशु रेवती ॥२०॥
20. ṛtavāguvāca .
yasmānmamaikaputrasya revatyantasamudbhavam .
dauḥ śīlyametat sā tasmāt patatāmāśu revatī.

ṛtavāk uvāca yasmāt mama ekaputrasya revatyantasamudbhavam
dauḥśīlyam etat sā tasmāt patatām āśu revatī
dauḥśīlyam etat sā tasmāt patatām āśu revatī

Ṛtavāk said: "Because of this misconduct of my only son, which arose at the end of Revatī, therefore let that Revatī (constellation) fall quickly!"
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तेनैवं व्याहृते शापे रेवत्यृक्षं पपात ह ।
पश्यतः सर्वलोकस्य विस्मयाविष्टचेतसः ॥२१॥

21. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tenaivaṃ vyāhṛte śāpe revatyṛkṣaṃ papāta ha .
paśyataḥ sarvalokasya vismayāviṣṭacetasaḥ.
tenaivaṃ vyāhṛte śāpe revatyṛkṣaṃ papāta ha .

mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tena evam vyāhṛte śāpe revatī ṛkṣam
papāta ha paśyataḥ sarvalokasya vismayāviṣṭacetasaḥ

Mārkaṇḍeya said: When he had thus uttered the curse, the constellation Revati indeed fell, while all the people, their minds filled with wonder, looked on.
रेवत्यृक्षञ्च पतितं कुमुदाद्रौ समन्ततः ।
भावयामास सहसा वनकन्दरनिर्झरम् ॥२२॥

22. revatyṛkṣañca patitaṃ kumudādrau samantataḥ .
bhāvayāmāsa sahasā vanakandaranirjharam.

revatī ṛkṣam ca patitam kumudādrau samantataḥ
bhāvayāmāsa sahasā vanakandaranirjharam

And the constellation Revati, having fallen all around on Mount Kumuda, suddenly gave rise to a forest replete with caves and waterfalls.
कुमुदाद्रिश्च तत्पातात् ख्यातो रैवतकोऽभवत् ।
अतीव रम्यः सर्वस्यां पृथिव्यां पृथिवीधरः ॥२३॥
अतीव रम्यः सर्वस्यां पृथिव्यां पृथिवीधरः ॥२३॥
23. kumudādriśca tatpātāt khyāto raivatako'bhavat .
atīva ramyaḥ sarvasyāṃ pṛthivyāṃ pṛthivīdharaḥ.
atīva ramyaḥ sarvasyāṃ pṛthivyāṃ pṛthivīdharaḥ.

kumudādriḥ ca tat pātāt khyātaḥ raivatakaḥ abhavat
atīva ramyaḥ sarvasyām pṛthivyām pṛthivīdharaḥ
atīva ramyaḥ sarvasyām pṛthivyām pṛthivīdharaḥ
23.
And Mount Kumuda, due to the constellation's fall, became renowned as Raivataka, an exceedingly delightful mountain (pṛthivīdharaḥ) across the entire earth.
तस्यर्क्षस्य तु या कान्तिर्जाता पङ्कजिनी सरः ।
ततो जज्ञे तदा कन्या रूपेणातीव शोभना ॥२४॥

24. tasyarkṣasya tu yā kāntirjātā paṅkajinī saraḥ .
tato jajñe tadā kanyā rūpeṇātīva śobhanā.

tasya ṛkṣasya tu yā kāntiḥ jātā paṅkajinī saraḥ
tataḥ jajñe tadā kanyā rūpeṇa atīva śobhanā

And the splendor of that constellation indeed became a lotus lake. Then, from that lake, a maiden of exceedingly beautiful form was born.
रेवतीकान्तिसम्भूतां तां दृष्ट्वा प्रमुचो मुनिः ।
तस्या नाम चकारेत्थं रेवती नाम भागुरे ॥२५॥

25. revatīkāntisambhūtāṃ tāṃ dṛṣṭvā pramuco muniḥ .

O Bhāguri, when the sage Pramuca saw her, born from the splendor of Revati, he thus named her Revati.
पोषयामास चैवैतां स्वाश्रमाभ्याससम्भवाम् ।
प्रमुचः स महाभागस्तस्मिन्नेव महाचले ॥२६॥

26. poṣayāmāsa caivaitāṃ svāśramābhyāsasambhavām .
pramucaḥ sa mahābhāgastasminneva mahācale.

And indeed, that illustrious sage Pramuca raised her, who had originated in the vicinity of his own hermitage (āśrama), on that very great mountain.

However, when that sage saw her, a youthful maiden endowed with beauty, he began to think: 'Who should be her husband?'

O sage (muni), as he pondered in this way, a long time passed. The great sage did not find a suitable husband for her.

Then, that sage, who performed oblations, entered the fire-chamber to ask Agni for a boon for her. Indeed, the fire-god spoke to the inquirer.

A mighty, very valorous, sweet-spoken king, affectionate towards natural law (dharma), named Durgama, will indeed be her husband.

Markandeya said: "And afterwards, O sage, that intelligent King Durgama arrived at her hermitage due to a hunting expedition."

The lord of the earth (jagatīpatiḥ), having entered the hermitage, and not seeing that sage, addressed that slender woman (tanvīm) as "O dear one!" and then asked.

तं प्रणेतुमिहेच्छामि तत् त्वं प्रब्रूहि शोभने ॥३४॥

The king said, "Where has the venerable (bhagavān) foremost among sages (munipuṅgavaḥ) gone from this hermitage? I wish to pay homage to him here. Please tell me that, O beautiful one!"

Markaṇḍeya said, "The brahmin (vipraḥ) had gone to the fire-hall. Having heard his words and also the address 'O dear one!' (priye iti), he (the sage) departed in a hurry."

The sage (muniḥ) saw the great-souled king, who was formidable and possessed royal insignia, humbly bowing before him.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then the king pondered the reason for his status as son-in-law (jāmātṛ). However, the silent one (maunī) did not know that, and the king (nṛpaḥ) accepted that offering (argha).

स्वागतं प्राह राजेन्द्रमपि ते कुशलं गृहे ॥४०॥

The great sage (mahāmuni), the Brahmin, then addressed that king of kings (rājendra), who was seated and had accepted the offering (argha), saying, 'Welcome! Is all well in your household?'

तथात्मनि महाबाहो यत्र सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥४१॥

O lord of men, O mighty-armed one, everything is established in the treasury, in the army, among friends, in servants, and in ministers. Similarly, all things are also established in the self (ātman).

तव भर्या वरारोहा तां त्वं राजन्न वेत्सि किम् ॥४४॥

The sage said: 'Revati, your wife, who is exceedingly fortunate and beautiful even in all three worlds, and possesses excellent hips - O king, do you not know her?'

The King said: 'O Lord, [I know] Subhadrā, Śāntatanayā (daughter of Śānta), Kāverītanayā (daughter of Kāverī), Surāṣṭrajā (born in Surāṣṭra), Sujātā, Kadambā, and Varūthajā (born from Varūtha).'
विपाठां नन्दिनीञ्चैव वेद्मि भार्यां गृहे द्विज ।
तिष्ठन्ति मे न भगवन् रेवतीं वेद्मि कान्वियम् ॥४६॥

The King said: 'O twice-born (dvija), I indeed know Vipāṭhā and Nandīnī as wives in my home. But, O Lord, Revatī is not among those who belong to me. Who, then, is this [woman]?'

किं विस्मृतन्ते भूपाल श्लाघ्येयं गृहिणी तव ॥४७॥

The sage said: 'O King (bhūpāla), has this praiseworthy wife of yours, this beautiful lady whom you just now called “dear one,” been forgotten by you?'

नात्र कोपं भवान् कर्तुमर्हत्यस्मासु याचितः ॥४८॥

The King said: 'O sage (mune), what I said is true, but my intention (bhāva) is not malicious. You, having been entreated [by me], ought not to become angry with us in this matter.'

Therefore, O King (narādhipa), let this maiden (kanyā), given by me to you, be accepted. And how is it that you deliberate regarding this one, who has been addressed as 'dear one'?

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then that lord of the earth (pṛthivīpati), having been spoken to by him (the sage), became silent. And the sage then prepared to perform her wedding ritual.

O great sage, with her face bowed down in humility, the maiden said a few words to her father who was preparing for her marriage.

The sage said, 'O dear one, the Revati constellation is certainly not appropriate for a moon conjunction (for marriage). O beautiful-browed maiden, there are other constellations suitable for your marriage.'

विवाहो विफले काले मद्विधायाः कथं भवेत् ॥५६॥

The maiden said, 'Father, without that (Revati constellation), the timing (for marriage) seems inauspicious to me. How can the marriage of someone like me take place at an unfavorable time?'

The sage said: The renowned ascetic (tapasvī) Ṛtavāk became angry at Revatī. By him, in his anger, the constellation was caused to fall.

न चेच्छसि विवाहं त्वं सङ्कटं नः समागतम् ॥५८॥

The sage said: O woman with intoxicating eyes (madirekṣaṇā), I promised you to him as a wife. If you do not desire this marriage, then a great difficulty (saṅkaṭa) has come upon us.

न त्वया मम तातेन ब्रह्मबन्धोः सुतास्मि किम् ॥५९॥

The daughter said: "O father, why did that sage Ṛtavāk perform such austerities (tapas)? Am I not your daughter, my father? Or am I the daughter of a nominal brahmin (brahmabandhu)?"

The sage said: "O child, you are not the daughter of a nominal brahmin (brahmabandhu), nor indeed of merely an ascetic (tapasvin). You are my daughter, I who am capable of creating other gods."

समारोप्य विवाहो मे तदृक्षे क्रियते न तु ॥६१॥

The girl said, "If my father is an ascetic (tapasvī), then what is this constellation (ṛkṣa) in the sky? My marriage is being performed by associating it with that constellation, and not otherwise."

आरोपयामीन्दुमार्गे रेवत्यृक्षं कृते तव ॥६२॥

The sage (ṛṣi) said, "So be it! May there be welfare for you, O auspicious one! Be joyful. I will place the Revati constellation (ṛkṣa) on the moon's path for your sake."

Mārkaṇḍeya said, "Then, the great sage (mahāmuni), by the power of his asceticism (tapas), made the Revati constellation (ṛkṣa) as it was before, placing it in conjunction with the Moon (Soma), O best among twice-born ones (dvijottama)."

And having duly performed his daughter's marriage (vivāha) with the mantra-proficient (mantrayogin) groom according to sacred rites, he, being pleased, then spoke further to his son-in-law (jāmātā).

दुर्लभ्यमपि दास्यामि ममाप्रतिहतन्तपः ॥६५॥

O King, tell me what I should give you for your wedding. I will give even that which is hard to obtain, for my ascetic power (tapas) is irresistible.

मन्वन्तराधिपं पुत्रं त्वत्प्रसादाद् वृणोम्यहम् ॥६६॥

The King said: 'O sage, I am born in the lineage of Svayambhu Manu. By your grace, I desire a son who will be the ruler of a Manvantara.'

सकलां भोक्ष्यते भूप धर्मविच्च भविष्यति ॥६७॥

The Sage said: 'O King, this desire of yours will be fulfilled. Your son, Manu, will rule the entire earth, and he will also be a knower of (natural law) dharma.'

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, having received that (boon), the king went to his own city. From him, through Revatī, a son named Manu Raivata was born.

He was endowed with all intrinsic natures (dharma), unconquered by men, and thoroughly understood the meaning of all scriptures and the Vedic sciences.

O dvija (dvija), listen attentively (susamāhitaḥ) to the gods, sages, Indras, and kings of his manvantara (manvantara), who are now being narrated by me.

वैकुण्ठश्चामिताभश्च चतुर्दश चतुर्दश ॥७१॥

O dvija (dvija), in that (manvantara) were the Sumedhasas gods, and also kings. The Vaikuṇṭhas and Amitābhas were each fourteen.

नाम्ना विभुरभूदिन्द्रः शतयज्ञोपलक्षकः ॥७२॥

And the lord (īśvara) of those four groups of deities was Vibhu by name, who became Indra (indra), identified by a hundred ritual Vedic rituals (yajña).

Hiraṇyalomā, Vedaśrī, Ūrdhvabāhu, and another, Vedabāhu, Sudhāmā, and Parjanya, the great sage.

एते सप्तर्षयश्चासन् रैवतस्यान्तरे मनोः ॥७४॥

And Vasiṣṭha, the illustrious one who had mastered the Vedas and Vedāntas, was among them. These seven sages (saptarṣayaḥ) existed during the interval of Raivata Manu.

Balabandhu, Mahāvīrya, Suyaṣṭavya, and another (Apara), along with Satyaka and others, were the sons of Raivata Manu.
रैवतान्तास्तु मनवः कथिता ये मया तव ।
स्वायम्भुवाश्रया ह्येते स्वारोचिषमृते मनुम् ॥७६॥

76. raivatāntāstu manavaḥ kathitā ye mayā tava .

The Manus, up to and including Raivata, whom I have narrated to you, these indeed have their foundation in Svāyambhuva, with the exception of Svārociṣa Manu.
य एषां शृणुयान्नित्यं पठेदाख्यानमुत्तमम् ।
विमुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यो लोकं प्राप्नोत्यभीप्सितम् ॥७७॥

77. ya eṣāṃ śṛṇuyānnityaṃ paṭhedākhyānamuttamam .

Whoever regularly listens to or reads this excellent narration (ākhyāna) will be freed from all sins and attain the desired world.
