मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इन्द्रसेनासमाज्ञप्तः स गत्वा शूद्रतापसः ।
समाचष्ट यथापूर्वं दमाय निधनं पितुः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
indrasenāsamājñaptaḥ sa gatvā śūdratāpasaḥ .
samācaṣṭa yathāpūrvaṃ damāya nidhanaṃ pituḥ.

śūdratāpasaḥ samācaṣṭa yathāpūrvam damāya nidhanam pituḥ
1. Markandeya said: Commanded by Indrasena, that Shudra ascetic, having gone, informed Dama of his father's death, just as he was supposed to.
तापसेन समाख्याते दमस्तेन पितुर्वधे ।
क्रोधेनातीव जज्वाल हविषेवाग्निरुद्धतः ॥२॥
2. tāpasena samākhyāte damastena piturvadhe .
krodhenātīva jajvāla haviṣevāgniruddhataḥ.
2. tāpasena samākhyāte damaḥ tena pituḥ vadhe
krodhena atīva jajvāla haviṣā iva agniḥ uddhataḥ
2. When the ascetic fully reported his father's death, Dama thereupon blazed with extreme anger, just like a roused fire (agni) with an oblation.
स तु क्रोधाग्निना धीरे दह्यमानो महामुने ।
करं करेण निष्पिष्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥३॥
3. sa tu krodhāgninā dhīre dahyamāno mahāmune .
karaṃ kareṇa niṣpiṣya vākyametaduvāca ha.
3. saḥ tu krodhāgninā dhīre dahyamānaḥ mahāmune
karam kareṇa niṣpiṣya vākyam etat uvāca ha
3. But he, O great sage, being consumed by the fire of anger, clenched his hands and spoke these words.
अनाथ इव मे तातो मयि पुत्रे तु जीवति ।
घातितः सुनृशंसेन परिभूय कुलं मम ॥४॥
4. anātha iva me tāto mayi putre tu jīvati .
ghātitaḥ sunṛśaṃsena paribhūya kulaṃ mama.
4. anāthaḥ iva me tātaḥ mayi putre tu jīvati
ghātitaḥ sunṛśaṃsena paribhūya kulam mama
4. My father was slain by an extremely cruel person, as if he were helpless, after that person humiliated my family, even though I, his son, am still alive.
तापं करोम्यहं किंवाप्येष क्लैब्यात्क्षमाम्यहम् ।
दुर्वृत्तशान्तौ शिष्टानां पालनेऽधिकृता वयम् ॥५॥
5. tāpaṃ karomyahaṃ kiṃvāpyeṣa klaibyātkṣamāmyaham .
durvṛttaśāntau śiṣṭānāṃ pālane'dhikṛtā vayam.
5. tāpam karomi aham kim vā api eṣaḥ klaibyāt kṣamāmi
aham durvṛttaśāntau śiṣṭānām pālane adhikṛtāḥ vayam
5. Am I to inflict suffering (tāpa), or am I to forgive this out of weakness? We are indeed authorized for the suppression of the wicked and the protection of the virtuous.
पितरं चापि निहतं दृष्ट्वा जीवन्ति शत्रवः ।
तत्किमेतेन बहुना हा तातेति च किं पुनः ॥६॥
6. pitaraṃ cāpi nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā jīvanti śatravaḥ .
tatkimetena bahunā hā tāteti ca kiṃ punaḥ.
6. pitaram ca api nihatam dṛṣṭvā jīvanti śatravaḥ
tat kim etena bahunā hā tāta iti ca kim punaḥ
6. And having seen my father slain, the enemies still live. So, what is the use of much talk about this? And why again lament, 'Alas, O father!'?
विलापेनात्र यत्कृत्यं तदेषोऽत्र करोम्यहम् ।
यद्यहं तस्य रक्तेन देहोत्थेन वपुष्मतः ॥७॥
7. vilāpenātra yatkṛtyaṃ tadeṣo'tra karomyaham .
yadyahaṃ tasya raktena dehotthena vapuṣmataḥ.
7. vilāpena atra yat kṛtyam tat eṣaḥ atra karomi aham
yadi aham tasya raktena dehotthena vapuṣmataḥ
7. Whatever is to be accomplished here through lamentation, that I will do here. If I [perform the rites] with the blood of that embodied one (vapuṣmat), which is born from his body...
तच्छोणितेनोदककर्म तस्य मांसेन सम्यग्द्विजभोजनं च ।
कुर्यां पितुस्तस्य च पिण्डदानं न चेत्प्रवेक्ष्यामि हुताशनं तत् ॥८॥
8. tacchoṇitenodakakarma tasya māṃsena samyagdvijabhojanaṃ ca .
kuryāṃ pitustasya ca piṇḍadānaṃ na cetpravekṣyāmi hutāśanaṃ tat.
8. tat śoṇitena udakakarma tasya
māṃsena samyak dvija bhojanaṃ ca
kuryām pituḥ tasya ca piṇḍadānaṃ
na cet pravekṣyāmi hutāśanam tat
8. I will perform that water ritual with his blood, and properly provide a meal for Brahmins (dvija) with his flesh, and also offer rice balls (piṇḍa-dāna) for his father. If I do not, I will enter that fire (hutāśana).
साहाय्यमस्यासुरदेवयक्षगन्धर्वविद्याधरसिद्धसंघाः ।
कुर्वन्ति चेत्तानपि चास्त्रपूगैर्भस्मीकरोम्येष रुषा समेतः ॥९॥
9. sāhāyyamasyāsuradevayakṣagandharvavidyādharasiddhasaṃghāḥ .
kurvanti cettānapi cāstrapūgairbhasmīkaromyeṣa ruṣā sametaḥ.
9. sāhāyyam asya
asuradevayakṣagandharvavidyādharasiddhasaṅghāḥ
kurvanti cet tān api ca astrapūgaiḥ
bhasmīkaromi eṣaḥ ruṣā sametaḥ
9. If throngs of Asuras, Devas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, and perfected beings (siddha) offer him help, then I, filled with rage, will incinerate all of them as well with hosts of weapons.
निःशूरमाधार्मिकमप्रशस्तं तं दाक्षिणात्यं समरे निहत्य ।
भोक्ष्ये ततोऽहं पृथिवीं च कृत्स्नां वह्निं प्रवेक्ष्याम्यनिहत्य तं वा ॥१०॥
10. niḥśūramādhārmikamapraśastaṃ taṃ dākṣiṇātyaṃ samare nihatya .
bhokṣye tato'haṃ pṛthivīṃ ca kṛtsnāṃ vahniṃ pravekṣyāmyanihatya taṃ vā.
10. niḥśūram adhārmikam apraśastam tam
dākṣiṇātyam samare nihatya bhokṣye
tataḥ aham pṛthivīm ca kṛtsnām
vahnim pravekṣyāmi anihatya tam vā
10. Having killed that valueless, unrighteous (adharma), despicable southerner in battle, I will then rule the entire earth. Otherwise, if I do not kill him, I will enter the fire.
सुदुर्मतिं तापसवृद्धघातिनं वनस्थगं साधुविधिं विदग्धगम् ।
हन्ताहमद्याखिलबन्धुमित्रपदातिहस्त्यश्वबलैः समेतम् ॥११॥
11. sudurmatiṃ tāpasavṛddhaghātinaṃ vanasthagaṃ sādhuvidhiṃ vidagdhagam .
hantāhamadyākhilabandhumitrapadātihastyaśvabalaiḥ sametam.
11. sudurmatim tāpasavṛddhagātinam
vanasthagam sādhuvidhim vidagdhagam
hantā aham adya
akhilabandhumitrapadātihastyaśvabalaiḥ sametam
11. Today I will kill that extremely wicked individual, the slayer of old ascetics, the obstructor of righteous acts, the forest-dweller, and the cunning one, along with all his relatives, friends, foot soldiers, elephants, and cavalry.
एषोऽहमादाय धनुःसखड्गो रथी तथैवारिबलं समेत्य ।
करोमि वै यत्कदनं समस्ताः पश्यन्तु मे देवगणा समेताः ॥१२॥
12. eṣo'hamādāya dhanuḥsakhaḍgo rathī tathaivāribalaṃ sametya .
karomi vai yatkadanaṃ samastāḥ paśyantu me devagaṇā sametāḥ.
12. eṣaḥ aham ādāya dhanuḥsakhaḍgaḥ
rathī tathā eva aribalam sametya
karomi vai yat kadanam samastāḥ
paśyantu me devagaṇāḥ sametāḥ
12. Here I am, taking up my bow and sword, mounted on my chariot. Having approached the enemy forces, let all the assembled hosts of gods witness the destruction that I will indeed unleash.
यो यः सहायो भविताद्य तस्य मया समेतस्य रणाय भूयः ।
तस्यैव निःशेषकुलक्षयाय समुद्यतोऽहं निजबाहुसैन्यः ॥१३॥
13. yo yaḥ sahāyo bhavitādya tasya mayā sametasya raṇāya bhūyaḥ .
tasyaiva niḥśeṣakulakṣayāya samudyato'haṃ nijabāhusainyaḥ.
13. yaḥ yaḥ sahāyaḥ bhavitā adya
tasya mayā sametasya raṇāya bhūyaḥ
tasya eva niḥśeṣakulakṣayāya
samudyataḥ aham nijabāhusainyaḥ
13. Whoever becomes his ally today, joining him again for battle, I am prepared, with my own arms as my army, for the complete annihilation of that very person's entire lineage.
यदि कुलिशकरोऽस्मिन्सयुगे देवराजः पितृपतिरथ चोग्रं दण्डमुद्यस्य कोपात् ।
धनपतिवरुणार्का रक्षितुं तं यतन्ते निशितशरवरौघैर्घातियिष्ये तथापि ॥१४॥
14. yadi kuliśakaro'sminsayuge devarājaḥ pitṛpatiratha cograṃ daṇḍamudyasya kopāt .
dhanapativaruṇārkā rakṣituṃ taṃ yatante niśitaśaravaraughairghātiyiṣye tathāpi.
14. yadi kuliśakaraḥ asmin sayuge devarājaḥ
pitṛpatiḥ atha ca ugram daṇḍam udyasya kopāt
dhanapativaruṇārkāḥ rakṣitum tam yatante
niśitaśaravaraughaiḥ ghātiyiṣye tathāpi
14. Even if Indra, the thunderbolt-wielding king of gods, and Yama, the lord of ancestors, were to brandish their terrible rod of punishment in wrath in this very battle; and if Kubera, Varuna, and Surya strive to protect him, nevertheless, I will slay him with my excellent, sharp arrows.
नियतमतिरदोषः काननाखण्डलोका निपतितफलभक्षः सर्वभूतेषु मैत्रः ।
प्रभवति मयि पुत्रे हिंसितो येन तातः पिशितरुधिरतृप्तास्तस्य सन्त्वद्य गृध्राः ॥१५॥
15. niyatamatiradoṣaḥ kānanākhaṇḍalokā nipatitaphalabhakṣaḥ sarvabhūteṣu maitraḥ .
prabhavati mayi putre hiṃsito yena tātaḥ piśitarudhiratṛptāstasya santvadya gṛdhrāḥ.
15. niyata-matiḥ adroṣaḥ kānana-akhaṇḍa-lokā
nipatita-phala-bhakṣaḥ sarva-bhūteṣu maitraḥ
prabhavati mayi putre hiṃsitaḥ yena tātaḥ
piśita-rudhira-tṛptāḥ tasya santu adya gṛdhrāḥ
15. May the vultures today be satisfied with the flesh and blood of the person who harmed me, his son, by killing my father – a man whose mind was disciplined, without malice, who lived entirely in the forest, who ate only fallen fruits, and was friendly to all beings.
