मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
राजाभूद् विख्यातः स्वराष्ट्रो नाम वीर्यवान् ।
अनेकयज्ञकृत् प्राज्ञः संग्रामेष्वपराजितः ॥१॥

1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .

Mārkaṇḍeya said: There was a king, renowned and valiant, named Svarāṣṭra. He was a performer of many Vedic rituals (yajña), wise, and unconquered in battles.
तस्यायुः सुमहत्प्रादात् मन्त्रिणाराधितो रविः ।
पत्नीनाञ्च शतन्तस्य धन्यानामभवद् द्विज ॥२॥

2. tasyāyuḥ sumahatprādāt mantriṇārādhito raviḥ .
patnīnāñca śatantasya dhanyānāmabhavad dvija.

tasya āyuḥ sumahat prādāt mantriṇā ārādhitaḥ raviḥ

The Sun god, propitiated by his minister, granted him a very long life. And, O Brahmin (dvija), he also had a hundred fortunate wives.
तस्य दीर्घायुषः पत्न्यो नातिदीर्घायुषो मुने ।
कालेन जग्मुर्निधनं भृत्यमन्त्रिजनास्तथा ॥३॥

3. tasya dīrghāyuṣaḥ patnyo nātidīrghāyuṣo mune .

O sage (mune), though he himself had a long life, his wives did not have very long lives. In time, they, along with his servants and ministers, similarly met their demise.
स भार्याभिस्तथायुक्तो भृत्यैश्च सहजन्मभिः ।
उद्विग्नचेताः संप्राप वीर्यहानिमहर्निशम् ॥४॥

4. sa bhāryābhistathāyukto bhṛtyaiśca sahajanmabhiḥ .

He, having been associated with his wives, servants, and blood relatives, became distressed in mind and suffered a constant loss of vital energy.
तं वीर्यहीनं निभृतैर्भृत्यैस्त्यक्तं सुदुः खितम् ।
अनन्तरो विमर्दाख्यो राज्याच्च्यावितवांस्तदा ॥५॥

5. taṃ vīryahīnaṃ nibhṛtairbhṛtyaistyaktaṃ suduḥ khitam .

Then, his immediate successor, named Vimarda, deposed him - who was by then devoid of vital energy, secretly abandoned by his servants, and greatly distressed - from his kingdom.
राज्याच्च्युतः सोऽपि वनं गत्वा निर्विण्णमानसः ।
तपस्तेपे महाभागे वितस्तापुलिने स्थितः ॥६॥

6. rājyāccyutaḥ so'pi vanaṃ gatvā nirviṇṇamānasaḥ .

O highly fortunate one, deprived of his kingdom, he, too, went to the forest with a dejected mind. There, he performed severe austerity (tapas), residing on the sandbanks of the Vitastā river.
ग्रीष्मे पञ्चतमा भूत्वा वर्षास्वभ्रावकाशिकः ।
जलशायी च शिशिरे निराहारो यतव्रतः ॥७॥

7. grīṣme pañcatamā bhūtvā varṣāsvabhrāvakāśikaḥ .

In summer, he performed the austerity (tapas) of five fires; in the rainy season, he remained in the open air under the clouds; and in winter, he slept in water, fasting and maintaining strict vows.
ततस्तपस्यतस्तस्य प्रावृट्काले महाप्लवः ।
बभूवानुदिनं मेघैर्वर्षद्भिरनुसन्ततम् ॥८॥

8. tatastapasyatastasya prāvṛṭkāle mahāplavaḥ .

Then, while he was engaged in his austerity (tapas), a great flood occurred during the rainy season, as clouds incessantly rained day after day.
न दिग्विज्ञायते पूर्वा दक्षिणा वा न पश्चिमा ।
नोत्तरा तमसा सर्वमनुलिप्तमिवाभवत् ॥९॥

9. na digvijñāyate pūrvā dakṣiṇā vā na paścimā .

Neither the eastern, southern, nor western direction, nor the northern, could be discerned. Everything seemed to be smeared by darkness.
ततोऽतिपूरेण नृपः स नद्याः प्रेरितस्तटम् ।
प्रार्थयन्नापि नावाप ह्रियमाणो महीपतिः ॥१०॥

10. tato'tipūreṇa nṛpaḥ sa nadyāḥ preritastaṭam .

tataḥ atipūreṇa nṛpaḥ saḥ nadyāḥ preritaḥ taṭam

Then, that king, being swept away by the river's massive flood, was driven towards the bank but, despite his desire, could not reach it, as he was being carried away.
अथ दूरे जलौघेन ह्रियमाणो महीपतिः ।
आससाद जले रौहीं स पुच्छे जगृहे च ताम् ॥११॥

11. atha dūre jalaughena hriyamāṇo mahīpatiḥ .

Then, the king, being swept far away by the current, encountered a female deer in the water and seized her by the tail.
तेन प्लवेन स ययावूह्यमानो महीतले ।
इतश्चेतश्चान्धकारे आससाद तटन्ततः ॥१२॥

12. tena plavena sa yayāvūhyamāno mahītale .

Carried along on the earth's surface by that (deer-like) float, he drifted hither and thither in the darkness until he finally reached a bank.
विस्तारि पङ्कमत्यर्थं दुस्तरं स नृपस्तरन् ।
तथैव कृष्यमाणोऽन्यद्रम्यं वनमवाप सः ॥१३॥
तथैव कृष्यमाणोऽन्यद्रम्यं वनमवाप सः ॥१३॥
13. vistāri paṅkamatyarthaṃ dustaraṃ sa nṛpastaran .
tathaiva kṛṣyamāṇo'nyadramyaṃ vanamavāpa saḥ.
tathaiva kṛṣyamāṇo'nyadramyaṃ vanamavāpa saḥ.

vistāri paṅkam atyartham dustaram saḥ nṛpaḥ taran
tathā eva kṛṣyamāṇaḥ anyat ramyam vanam avāpa saḥ

That king, as he crossed the vast, exceedingly difficult-to-traverse mud, was still being dragged along, and in this manner, he reached another beautiful forest.
तत्रान्धकारे सा रौही चकर्ष वसुधाधिपम् ।
पुच्छे लग्नं महाभागं कृशं धमनिसन्ततौ ॥१४॥

14. tatrāndhakāre sā rauhī cakarṣa vasudhādhipam .
pucche lagnaṃ mahābhāgaṃ kṛśaṃ dhamanisantatau.

There in the darkness, Rauhī pulled the lord of the earth, that noble one, who was clinging to her tail, emaciated and with a prominent network of veins.
तस्याश्च स्पर्शसंभूतामवापमुदमुत्तमाम् ।
सोऽन्धकारे भ्रमन् भूयो मदनाकृष्टमानसः ॥१५॥
सोऽन्धकारे भ्रमन् भूयो मदनाकृष्टमानसः ॥१५॥
15. tasyāśca sparśasaṃbhūtāmavāpamudamuttamām .
so'ndhakāre bhraman bhūyo madanākṛṣṭamānasaḥ.

tasyāḥ ca sparśasaṃbhūtām avāpa mudam uttamām
saḥ andhakāre bhraman bhūyaḥ madanākṛṣṭamānasaḥ

15.
And from her touch, he attained the highest joy. While he wandered again in the darkness, his mind was captivated by desire (madana).
विज्ञाय सानुरागं तं पृष्ठस्पर्शनतत्परम् ।
नरेन्द्रं तद्वनस्यान्तः सा मृगी तमुवाच ह ॥१६॥

16. vijñāya sānurāgaṃ taṃ pṛṣṭhasparśanatatparam .
narendraṃ tadvanasyāntaḥ sā mṛgī tamuvāca ha.

Recognizing him, the king (narendra), as affectionate and eager to touch her back, the deer (mṛgī) spoke to him inside that forest.
किं पृष्ठं वेपथुमता करेण स्पृशसे मम ।
अन्यथैवास्य कार्यस्य सञ्जाता नृपते गतिः ॥१७॥

17. kiṃ pṛṣṭhaṃ vepathumatā kareṇa spṛśase mama .
anyathaivāsya kāryasya sañjātā nṛpate gatiḥ.

kim pṛṣṭham vepathumatā kareṇa spṛśase mama

Why do you touch my back with a trembling hand? O King (nṛpate), the course of this matter has surely turned out quite differently.
नास्थाने वो मनो यातं नागम्याहं तवेश्वर ।
किन्तु त्वत्सङ्गमे विघ्नमेष लोलः करोति मे ॥१८॥
किन्तु त्वत्सङ्गमे विघ्नमेष लोलः करोति मे ॥१८॥
18. nāsthāne vo mano yātaṃ nāgamyāhaṃ taveśvara .
kintu tvatsaṅgame vighnameṣa lolaḥ karoti me.

na asthāne vaḥ manaḥ yātam na agamyā aham tava īśvara
kintu tvat-saṅgame vighnam eṣaḥ lolaḥ karoti me
kintu tvat-saṅgame vighnam eṣaḥ lolaḥ karoti me
18.
O Lord, your mind has not gone to an improper place, nor am I forbidden to you. But this restless one causes an obstacle to my union with you.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या मृग्याश्च जगतीपतिः ।
जातकौतूहलो रौहीमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या मृग्याश्च जगतीपतिः ।

19. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti śrutvā vacastasyā mṛgyāśca jagatīpatiḥ .
jātakautūhalo rauhīmidaṃ vacanamabravīt.

mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti śrutvā vacaḥ tasyāḥ mṛgyāḥ ca

19.
Markandeya said: Having heard these words from that deer, the lord of the earth (the king), whose curiosity had arisen, spoke these words to her.
का त्वं ब्रूहि मृगी वाक्यं कथं मानुषवद्वदेत् ।
कश्चैव लोलो यो विघ्नं त्वत्सङ्गे कुरुते मम ॥२०॥
कश्चैव लोलो यो विघ्नं त्वत्सङ्गे कुरुते मम ॥२०॥
20. kā tvaṃ brūhi mṛgī vākyaṃ kathaṃ mānuṣavadvadet .
kaścaiva lolo yo vighnaṃ tvatsaṅge kurute mama.

kā tvam brūhi mṛgī vākyam katham mānuṣavat vadet
kaḥ ca eva lolaḥ yaḥ vighnam tvat-saṅge kurute mama

20.
Who are you? Tell me, O deer, how can you speak like a human? And who is this restless one who creates an obstacle to my union with you?
मृग्युवाच ।
अहन्ते दयिता भूप प्रागासमुत्पलावती ।
भर्या शताग्रमहिषी दुहिता दृढधन्वनः ॥२१॥

21. mṛgyuvāca .
ahante dayitā bhūpa prāgāsamutpalāvatī .
bharyā śatāgramahiṣī duhitā dṛḍhadhanvanaḥ.

bharyā śatāgramahiṣī duhitā dṛḍhadhanvanaḥ.

mṛgī uvāca aham te dayitā bhūpa prāk āsam utpalāvatī
bhāryā śatāgramahiṣī duhitā dṛḍhadhanvanaḥ
bhāryā śatāgramahiṣī duhitā dṛḍhadhanvanaḥ

The deer said: 'O King, I was formerly your beloved wife, Utpalavati, the chief queen among a hundred, the daughter of Dṛḍhadhanvan.'
राजोवाच ।
किन्तु यावत् कृतं कर्म येनेमां योनिमागता ।
पतिव्रता धर्मपरा सा चेत्थं सथमीदृशी ॥२२॥
किन्तु यावत् कृतं कर्म येनेमां योनिमागता ।
पतिव्रता धर्मपरा सा चेत्थं सथमीदृशी ॥२२॥
22. rājovāca .
kintu yāvat kṛtaṃ karma yenemāṃ yonimāgatā .
pativratā dharmaparā sā cetthaṃ sathamīdṛśī.
kintu yāvat kṛtaṃ karma yenemāṃ yonimāgatā .
pativratā dharmaparā sā cetthaṃ sathamīdṛśī.

rāja uvāca kintu yāvat kṛtam karma yena imām yonim
āgatā pativratā dharmaparā sā ca ittham satī īdṛśī
āgatā pativratā dharmaparā sā ca ittham satī īdṛśī

The king said, "But what action (karma) did she perform by which she attained this current birth? She is devoted to her husband and dedicated to her intrinsic nature (dharma), yet she has become like this."
मृग्युवाच ।
अहं पितृगृहे बाला सखीभिः सहिता वनम् ।
रन्तुं गता ददर्शैकं मृगं मृग्या समागतम् ॥२३॥
अहं पितृगृहे बाला सखीभिः सहिता वनम् ।
रन्तुं गता ददर्शैकं मृगं मृग्या समागतम् ॥२३॥
23. mṛgyuvāca .
ahaṃ pitṛgṛhe bālā sakhībhiḥ sahitā vanam .
rantuṃ gatā dadarśaikaṃ mṛgaṃ mṛgyā samāgatam.
ahaṃ pitṛgṛhe bālā sakhībhiḥ sahitā vanam .
rantuṃ gatā dadarśaikaṃ mṛgaṃ mṛgyā samāgatam.

mṛgī uvāca aham pitṛgṛhe bālā sakhībhiḥ sahitā
vanam rantum gatā dadarśa ekam mṛgam mṛgyā samāgatam
vanam rantum gatā dadarśa ekam mṛgam mṛgyā samāgatam
23.
The doe said, "When I was a young girl in my father's home, I went to the forest with my friends to play. There, I saw a male deer accompanied by a female deer."
ततः समीपवर्तिन्या मया सा ताडिता मृगी ।
मया त्रस्ता गतान्यत्र क्रुद्धः प्राह ततो मृगः ॥२४॥

24. tataḥ samīpavartinyā mayā sā tāḍitā mṛgī .
mayā trastā gatānyatra kruddhaḥ prāha tato mṛgaḥ.

Then, I, standing nearby, struck that doe. Terrified by me, she went elsewhere. Subsequently, the male deer, enraged, spoke.
मूढे किमेवं मत्तासि धिक्ते दौः शील्यमीदृशम् ।
आधानकालो येनायं त्वया मे विफलीकृतः ॥२५॥
आधानकालो येनायं त्वया मे विफलीकृतः ॥२५॥
25. mūḍhe kimevaṃ mattāsi dhikte dauḥ śīlyamīdṛśam .
ādhānakālo yenāyaṃ tvayā me viphalīkṛtaḥ.

mūḍhe kim evam mattā asi dhik te dauḥśīlyam īdṛśam

Oh foolish one! Why are you so arrogant? Shame on your such misconduct, by which you have rendered this time of impregnation fruitless for me!
वाचं श्रुत्वा ततस्तस्य मानुषस्येव भाषतः ।
भीता तमब्रुवं कोऽसीत्येतां योनिमुपागतः ॥२६॥

26. vācaṃ śrutvā tatastasya mānuṣasyeva bhāṣataḥ .
bhītā tamabruvaṃ ko'sītyetāṃ yonimupāgataḥ.

vācam śrutvā tataḥ tasya mānuṣasya iva bhāṣataḥ

Then, having heard his voice, which was like that of a human speaking, I, frightened, said to him, "Who are you, who has come into this form (yoni)?"

सुतपा नाम मृग्यान्तु साभिलाषो मृगोऽभवम् ॥२७॥

Then he said, "I am Sutapa by name, the son of a sage (ṛṣi) whose vision is tranquility. However, I became a deer, having developed a desire for a female deer (mṛgī)."
इमाञ्चानुगतः प्रेम्णा वाञ्छितश्चानया वने ।
त्वया वियोजिता दुष्टे तस्माच्छापं ददामि ते ॥२८॥

I followed her out of love and was desired by her in the forest. O wicked one, you separated her! Therefore, I give this curse to you.
मया चोक्तं तवाज्ञानादपराधः कृतो मुने ।
प्रसादं कुरु शापं मे न भवान् दातुमर्हति ॥२९॥

29. mayā coktaṃ tavājñānādaparādhaḥ kṛto mune .

And I said: "O sage (muni), an offense was committed by me out of ignorance. Please grant your grace, for you ought not to give a curse to me."
इत्युक्तः प्राह मां सोऽपि मुनिरित्थं महीपते ।
न प्रयच्छामि शापं ते यद्यात्मानं ददासि मे ॥३०॥

30. ityuktaḥ prāha māṃ so'pi muniritthaṃ mahīpate .

O king, when I had spoken thus, that sage also said to me in this manner: 'I will not give you a curse if you surrender yourself (ātman) to me.'
मया चोक्तं मृगी नाहं मृगरूपधरा वने ।
लप्स्यसेऽन्यां मृगीन्तावन्मयि भावो निवर्त्यताम् ॥३१॥

And I said, 'I am not a doe, though I assume the form of a deer in the forest. You will find another doe, so let your desire for me be withdrawn.'
इत्युक्तः कोपरक्ताक्षः स प्राह स्फुरिताधरः ।
नाहं मृगी त्वयेत्युक्तं मृगी मूढे भविष्यसि ॥३२॥

32. ityuktaḥ koparaktākṣaḥ sa prāha sphuritādharaḥ .

When told this, he, with eyes reddened by anger and trembling lips, said: 'You said, "I am not a doe," (but now) you, foolish woman, shall become a doe!'

Then, greatly distressed, I bowed down and said to the sage, who stood in his own form and was extremely angry, 'Be gracious!' again and again.
बालानभैज्ञा वाक्यानां ततः प्रोक्तमिदं मया ।
पितर्यसति नारीभिर्व्रियते हि पतिः स्वयम् ॥३४॥

34. bālānabhaijñā vākyānāṃ tataḥ proktamidaṃ mayā .

Being ignorant of such words, I then said this: 'Indeed, when the father is absent, women choose their husband themselves.'
सति ताते कथञ्चाहं वृणोमि मुनिसत्तम ।
सापराधाथवा पादौ प्रसीदेश नमाम्यहम् ॥३५॥

O best of sages, how can I choose (a husband) when my father is present? Or perhaps, I am at fault. O Lord, be gracious! I bow down at your feet.
प्रसीदेति प्रसीदेति प्रणताया महामते ।
इत्थं लालप्यमानायाः स प्राह मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥३६॥

To her, who was prostrate and thus repeatedly crying out, 'Be gracious! Be gracious! O great-minded one!' that best of sages said.
न भवत्यन्यथा प्रोक्तं मम वाक्यं कदाचन ।
मृगी भविष्यसि मृता वनेऽस्मिन्नेव जन्मनि ॥३७॥

37. na bhavatyanyathā proktaṃ mama vākyaṃ kadācana .

My word, once spoken, can never be otherwise. Having died, you will become a doe (mṛgī) in this very forest, in this very birth.
मृगत्वे च महाबाहुस्तव गर्भमुपैष्यति ।
लोलो नाम मुनेः पुत्रः सिद्धवीर्यस्य भामिनि ॥३८॥

38. mṛgatve ca mahābāhustava garbhamupaiṣyati .

O radiant one, that mighty-armed one will enter your womb as a deer. He will be Lola, the son of the sage whose power is established.
जीतिस्मरा भवित्री त्वं तस्मिन् गर्भमुपागते ।
स्मृतिं प्राप्य तथा वाचं मानुषीमीरयिष्यसि ॥३९॥

39. jītismarā bhavitrī tvaṃ tasmin garbhamupāgate .
smṛtiṃ prāpya tathā vācaṃ mānuṣīmīrayiṣyasi.

You will become a knower of past lives (jātismara) when that embryo is conceived. Having regained your memory (smṛti), you will then speak human words.
त्समिन् जाते मृगीत्वात् त्वं विमुक्ता पतिनार्चिता ।
लोकानवाप्स्यसि प्राप्या ये न दुष्कृतकर्मभिः ॥४०॥
लोकानवाप्स्यसि प्राप्या ये न दुष्कृतकर्मभिः ॥४०॥
40. tsamin jāte mṛgītvāt tvaṃ vimuktā patinārcitā .
lokānavāpsyasi prāpyā ye na duṣkṛtakarmabhiḥ.

tasmin jāte mṛgītvāt tvam vimuktā patinā arcitā

When he is born, you will be freed from your deer form and honored by your husband. Having obtained [merit/knowledge], you will attain realms (loka) that are inaccessible to those who perform evil actions (duṣkṛtakarma).
सोऽपि लोलो महावीर्यः पितृशत्रून् निपात्य वै ।
जित्वा वसुन्दरां कृत्स्त्रां भविष्यति ततो मनुः ॥४१॥
जित्वा वसुन्दरां कृत्स्त्रां भविष्यति ततो मनुः ॥४१॥
41. so'pi lolo mahāvīryaḥ pitṛśatrūn nipātya vai .
jitvā vasundarāṃ kṛtstrāṃ bhaviṣyati tato manuḥ.

saḥ api lolaḥ mahāvīryaḥ pitṛśatrūn nipātya vai
jitvā vasundarām kṛtsnām bhaviṣyati tataḥ manuḥ

And that Lola, of great valor, having indeed slain his father's enemies and conquered the entire earth, will then become a Manu.
एवं शापमहं लब्ध्वा मृता तिर्यक्त्वमागता ।
त्वत्संस्पर्शाच्च गर्भोऽसौ संभूतो जठरे मम ॥४२॥

42. evaṃ śāpamahaṃ labdhvā mṛtā tiryaktvamāgatā .

42.
Thus, having received a curse, I died and attained an animal form. And due to your touch, this embryo was conceived in my womb.
अतो ब्रवीमि नास्थाने तव यातं मनो मयि ।
न चाप्यगम्या गर्भस्थो लोलो विघ्नं करोत्यसौ ॥४३॥

43. ato bravīmi nāsthāne tava yātaṃ mano mayi .

Therefore, I tell you, your mind was not improperly directed towards me. Furthermore, I am not a forbidden woman, and this restless child dwelling in my womb does not create an impediment.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्ततः सोऽपि राजा प्राप्य परां मुदम् ।
पुत्रो ममारीञ्जित्वेति पृथिव्यां भविता मनुः ॥४४॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Thus addressed, that king obtained supreme joy (thinking): "My son, having conquered enemies, will be a Manu on earth."

तस्मिन् जाते च भूतानि सर्वाणि प्रययुर्मुदम् ॥४५॥

45. tatastaṃ suṣuve putraṃ sā mṛgī lakṣaṇānvitam .

Then that doe gave birth to him, the son endowed with auspicious marks. And when he was born, all beings experienced joy.
विशेषतश्च राजासौ पुत्रे जाते महाबले ।
सा विमुक्ता मृगी शापात् प्राप लोकाननुत्तमान् ॥४६॥

And particularly, when that extremely powerful son was born, she, the doe, was freed from the curse and attained unsurpassed realms.

Then, O best of sages, all the seers, having assembled and observed his future greatness, gave a name to that great-souled one.
तामसीं भजमानायां योनिं मातर्यजायत ।
तमसा चावृते लोके तामसोऽयं भविष्यति ॥४८॥
तमसा चावृते लोके तामसोऽयं भविष्यति ॥४८॥
48. tāmasīṃ bhajamānāyāṃ yoniṃ mātaryajāyata .
tamasā cāvṛte loke tāmaso'yaṃ bhaviṣyati.

He was born when the mother took a Tāmasic (tāmasī) birth-form. And in a world enveloped by darkness (tamas), this one will be Tāmasa.
ततः स तामसस्तेन पित्रा संवर्धितो वने ।
जातबुद्धिरुवाचेदं पितरं मुनिसत्तम ॥४९॥

Then, O best of sages, that Tamasa, having been raised by that father in the forest and having attained understanding, said this to his father.
कस्त्वं तात कथं वाहं पुत्रो माता च का मम ।
किमर्थमागतश्च त्वमेतत् सत्यं ब्रवीहि मे ॥५०॥
किमर्थमागतश्च त्वमेतत् सत्यं ब्रवीहि मे ॥५०॥
50. kastvaṃ tāta kathaṃ vāhaṃ putro mātā ca kā mama .
kimarthamāgataśca tvametat satyaṃ bravīhi me.

Who are you, dear father? And how am I your son? Who is my mother? And why have you come? Please tell me this truth.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।

तस्याचष्टे महाबहुः पुत्रस्य जगतीपतिः ॥५१॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then the mighty-armed king, the lord of the earth, told his son the entire account of what had happened, beginning with his dethronement from his own kingdom.
श्रुत्वा तत् सकलं सोऽपि समाराध्य च भारस्करम् ।
अवाच दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि ससंहाराण्यशेषतः ॥५२॥

52. śrutvā tat sakalaṃ so'pi samārādhya ca bhāraskaram .

Having heard all that, he also worshipped the sun (Bhāskara) and obtained divine weapons completely, along with their methods of destruction or withdrawal.
कृतास्त्रस्तानरीन् जित्वा पितुरानीय चान्तिकम् ।
अनुज्ञातान् मुनोचाथ तेन स्वं धर्ममास्थितः ॥५३॥

Having acquired weapons, and having conquered those enemies, he brought them near to his father. Then, having received his father's permission, he released them, thus remaining steadfast in his own duty (dharma).
पितापि तस्य स्वान् लोकांस्तपोयज्ञसमार्जितान् ।
विसृष्टदेहः संप्राप्तो दृष्ट्वा पुत्रमुखं सुखम् ॥५४॥

Having seen the happy face of his son, his father, having relinquished his body, also attained his own realms, which he had earned through ascetic practices (tapas) and sacrificial rituals (yajña).
जित्वा समस्तां पृथिवीं तामसाख्यः स पार्थिवः ।
तामसाख्यो मनुरभुत्तस्य मन्वन्तरं शृणु ॥५५॥

55. jitvā samastāṃ pṛthivīṃ tāmasākhyaḥ sa pārthivaḥ .

That king named Tamasa, having conquered the entire earth, became Manu (Manu) named Tamasa. Now listen to the account of his Manvantara.
ये देवा यत्पतिर्यश्च देवेन्द्रो ये तथर्षयः ।
ये पुत्राश्च मनोस्तस्य पृथिवीपरिपालकाः ॥५६॥

The gods, whose lord is Devendra, and also the sages, and the sons of that Manu who are the protectors of the earth -
सत्यास्तथान्ये सुधियः सुरूपा हरयस्तथा ।
एते देवगणास्तत्र सप्तविंशतिका मुने ॥५७॥

The Satyas, and others, the Sudhis, the Surupas, and the Haris - these are the twenty-seven groups of gods present there, O sage!
महाबलो महावीर्यः शतयज्ञोपलक्षितः ।
शिखिरिन्द्रस्तथा तेषां देवानामभवद्विभुः ॥५८॥

58. mahābalo mahāvīryaḥ śatayajñopalakṣitaḥ .

Śikhirindra, who was very powerful, very valorous, and distinguished by a hundred Vedic rituals (yajña), thus became the lord of those gods.
ज्योतिर्धर्मा पृथुः काव्यश्चैत्रोऽग्निर्वलकस्तथा ।
पीवरश्च तथा ब्रह्मन् सप्त गप्तर्षयोऽभवन् ॥५९॥

59. jyotirdharmā pṛthuḥ kāvyaścaitro'gnirvalakastathā .

O brahmin, Jyotirdharmā, Pṛthu, Kāvya, Caitra, Agni, Valaka, and Pīvara - these seven became the saptarṣis.
नरः क्षान्तिः शान्तदान्तजानुजङ्घादयस्तथा ।
पुत्रास्तु तामसस्यासन् राजानः सुमहाबलाः ॥६०॥

60. naraḥ kṣāntiḥ śāntadāntajānujaṅghādayastathā .

Nara, Kṣānti, Śāntadānta, Jānujaṅgha, and others - these, who were kings of great power, were the sons of Tāmasa.
इत्येतत्तामसं विप्र मन्वन्तरमुदाहृतम् ।
यः पठेत् शृणुयाद्वापि तमसा सन बाध्यते ॥६१॥

61. ityetattāmasaṃ vipra manvantaramudāhṛtam .
yaḥ paṭhet śṛṇuyādvāpi tamasā sana bādhyate.

iti etat tāmasam vipra manvantaram udāhṛtam yaḥ

O brahmin, this Tāmasa Manvantara has thus been described. Whoever reads it or even hears it will not be afflicted by ignorance (tamas).
