मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः सह तथा सोऽथ रराम गिरिसानुषु ।
फुल्लकाननहृद्येषु मनोज्ञेषु सरः सु च ॥१॥

1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .

Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'Then, he (Kali) sported with her (Varūthinī) on the mountain slopes, which were charming with blossoming forests, and in the beautiful lakes.'
कन्दरेषु च रम्येषु निम्नगापुलिनेषु च ।
मनोज्ञेषु तथान्येषु देशेषु मुदितो द्विज ॥२॥

And he sported in charming caves, and on beautiful riverbanks, and in other captivating places, O joyful twice-born one (dvija).

अचिन्तयद्भोगकाले निमीलितविलोचना ॥३॥

With her eyes closed during the time of enjoyment, she contemplated that form of his which was pervaded by fire and shone with his splendor.
ततः कालेन सा गर्भमवाप मुनिसत्तम ।
गन्धर्ववीर्यतो रूपचिन्तनाच्च द्विजन्मनः ॥४॥

Then, in due course, she conceived a pregnancy, O best of sages, due to the Gandharva's potency and her contemplation of the form of the twice-born (Agni).
तां गर्भधारिणीं सोऽथ सान्त्वयित्वा वरूथिनीम् ।
विप्ररूपधरो यातस्तया प्रीत्या विसर्जितः ॥५॥

5. tāṃ garbhadhāriṇīṃ so'tha sāntvayitvā varūthinīm .

Then he, having comforted that pregnant Varuthini, departed assuming the form of a Brahmin, and was lovingly dismissed by her.
जज्ञे स बालो द्युतिमान ज्वलन्निव विभावसुः ।
स्वरोचिभैर्यथा सूर्यो भासयन् सकला दिशः ॥६॥

6. jajñe sa bālo dyutimāna jvalanniva vibhāvasuḥ .
svarocibhairyathā sūryo bhāsayan sakalā diśaḥ.

jajñe saḥ bālaḥ dyutimān jvalan iva vibhāvasuḥ

That child was born, radiant and blazing like fire (Agni). Just as the sun illuminates all directions with its own rays, so did he make all directions shine.
स्वरोचिभिर्यतो भाति भास्वानिव स बालकः ।
ततः स्वरोचिरित्येवं नाम्ना ख्यातो बभूत सः ॥७॥

7. svarocibhiryato bhāti bhāsvāniva sa bālakaḥ .

svarocibhiḥ yataḥ bhāti bhāsvān iva saḥ bālakaḥ

Because that boy shone with his own splendor like the sun, he therefore became known by the name Svaroci.
ववृधे च महाभागो वयसानुदिनन्तथा ।
गुणौघैश्च यथा बालः कलाभिः शशलाञ्छनः ॥८॥

8. vavṛdhe ca mahābhāgo vayasānudinantathā .
guṇaughaiśca yathā bālaḥ kalābhiḥ śaśalāñchanaḥ.

vavṛdhe ca mahābhāgaḥ vayasā anudinam tathā

And that greatly fortunate one grew day by day in age, and similarly, with a multitude of virtues, just as the moon (śaśalāñchana) grows by its phases (kalā).
स जग्राह धनुर्वेदं वेदांश्चैव यथाक्रमम् ।
विद्याश्चैव महाभागस्तदा यौवनगोचरः ॥९॥

9. sa jagrāha dhanurvedaṃ vedāṃścaiva yathākramam .

saḥ jagrāha dhanurvedam vedān ca eva yathākramam

And that greatly fortunate one, having then attained youth, learned the science of archery, and indeed the Vedas in due order, and also the other sciences.
मन्दराद्रौ कदाचित् स विचरंश्चारुचेष्टितः ।
ददर्शैकां तदा कन्यां गिरिप्रस्थे भयातुराम् ॥१०॥

10. mandarādrau kadācit sa vicaraṃścāruceṣṭitaḥ .

Once, while he, with his graceful movements, was wandering on Mount Mandara, he then saw a terrified maiden on a mountain plateau.
त्रायस्वेति निरीक्ष्यैनं सा तदा वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
मा भैषीरिति स प्राह भयविप्लुतलोचनाम् ॥११॥

11. trāyasveti nirīkṣyainaṃ sā tadā vākyamabravīt .
mā bhaiṣīriti sa prāha bhayaviplutalocanām.

She, seeing him, then spoke the words, "Save me!" He, in turn, said to her, whose eyes were agitated by fear, "Do not fear!"
किमेतदिति तेनोक्ते वीरवाक्ये महात्मना ।
ततः सा कथयामास श्वासाक्षेपप्लुताक्षरम् ॥१२॥

12. kimetaditi tenokte vīravākye mahātmanā .
tataḥ sā kathayāmāsa śvāsākṣepaplutākṣaram.

When that heroic statement, "What is this?", was uttered by the great-souled one, she then narrated, her words interrupted by gasping breaths.
कन्योवाच ।
अहमिन्दीवराख्यस्य सुता विद्याधरस्य वै ।
नाम्ना मनोरमा जाता सुतायां मरुधन्वनः ॥१३॥
अहमिन्दीवराख्यस्य सुता विद्याधरस्य वै ।
नाम्ना मनोरमा जाता सुतायां मरुधन्वनः ॥१३॥
13. kanyovāca .
ahamindīvarākhyasya sutā vidyādharasya vai .
nāmnā manoramā jātā sutāyāṃ marudhanvanaḥ.

nāmnā manoramā jātā sutāyāṃ marudhanvanaḥ.

kanyā uvāca aham indīvarākhyasya sutā vidyādharasya

The maiden said: "I am Manoramā by name, the daughter of the Vidyādhara named Indīvara, and I was born from the daughter of Marudhanvan."
मन्दारविद्याधरजा सखी मम विभावरी ।
कलावती चाप्यपरा सुता पारस्य वै मुनेः ॥१४॥

14. mandāravidyādharajā sakhī mama vibhāvarī .
kalāvatī cāpyaparā sutā pārasya vai muneḥ.

Vibhāvarī, born of the Vidyādhara Mandāra, is my friend. And another (friend), Kalāvatī, is indeed the daughter of the sage Pāra.
ताभ्यां सह मया यातं कैलासतटमुत्तमम् ।
तत्र दृष्टो मुनिः कश्चित्तपसातिकृशाकृतिः ॥१५॥

15. tābhyāṃ saha mayā yātaṃ kailāsataṭamuttamam .
tatra dṛṣṭo muniḥ kaścittapasātikṛśākṛtiḥ.
tatra dṛṣṭo muniḥ kaścittapasātikṛśākṛtiḥ.

tābhyām saha mayā yātam kailāsa-taṭam uttamam
tatra dṛṣṭaḥ muniḥ kaścit tapasā ati-kṛśa-ākṛtiḥ
tatra dṛṣṭaḥ muniḥ kaścit tapasā ati-kṛśa-ākṛtiḥ
15.
With those two, I went to the excellent slope of Mount Kailāsa. There, a certain sage was seen, whose body was extremely emaciated due to his austerities (tapas).
क्षुत्क्षामकण्ठो निस्तेजा दूरपाताक्षितारकः ।
मयावहसितः क्रुद्धः स तदा मां शशाप ह ॥१६॥
मयावहसितः क्रुद्धः स तदा मां शशाप ह ॥१६॥
16. kṣutkṣāmakaṇṭho nistejā dūrapātākṣitārakaḥ .
mayāvahasitaḥ kruddhaḥ sa tadā māṃ śaśāpa ha.
mayāvahasitaḥ kruddhaḥ sa tadā māṃ śaśāpa ha.

kṣut-kṣāma-kaṇṭhaḥ niḥ-tejāḥ dūra-pāta-akṣi-tārakaḥ
mayā avahasitaḥ kruddhaḥ sa tadā mām śaśāpa ha
mayā avahasitaḥ kruddhaḥ sa tadā mām śaśāpa ha
16.
His throat was parched with hunger, he was lusterless, and his pupils were deeply sunken. When I laughed at him, he became enraged and then cursed me.
क्षामक्षामस्वरः किञ्चित्कल्पिताधरपल्लवः ।
त्वयावहसितो यस्मादनार्ये दुष्टतापसि ॥१७॥
त्वयावहसितो यस्मादनार्ये दुष्टतापसि ॥१७॥
17. kṣāmakṣāmasvaraḥ kiñcitkalpitādharapallavaḥ .
tvayāvahasito yasmādanārye duṣṭatāpasi.

kṣāma-kṣāma-svaraḥ kiñcit-kalpita-adhara-pallavaḥ
tvayā avahasitaḥ yasmāt anārye duṣṭa-tāpasi

With a very faint voice, and his delicate lower lip slightly trembling, he said: 'Because you laughed at me, O ignoble, wicked female ascetic (tāpasī)!'
तस्मात् त्वामचिरेणैव राक्षसोऽभिभविष्यसि ।
दत्ते शापे मत्सखीभ्यां स तु निर्भत्सितो मुनिः ॥१८॥
दत्ते शापे मत्सखीभ्यां स तु निर्भत्सितो मुनिः ॥१८॥
18. tasmāt tvāmacireṇaiva rākṣaso'bhibhaviṣyasi .
datte śāpe matsakhībhyāṃ sa tu nirbhatsito muniḥ.

tasmāt tvām acireṇa eva rākṣasaḥ abhibhaviṣyasi
datte śāpe mat-sakhībhyām sa tu nirbhartsitaḥ muniḥ
datte śāpe mat-sakhībhyām sa tu nirbhartsitaḥ muniḥ
18.
Therefore, very soon, a demon will overpower you. When that curse was given, my two friends rebuked that sage.
धिक् ते ब्राह्मण्यमक्षान्त्या हृतन्ते निखिलन्तपः ।
अमर्षणैर्धर्षितोऽसि तपसा नातिकर्षितः ॥१९॥

19. dhik te brāhmaṇyamakṣāntyā hṛtante nikhilantapaḥ .

dhik te brāhmaṇyam akṣāntyā hṛtam te nikhilam tapaḥ

19.
Fie upon your brahmin-ness (brāhmaṇya)! Your entire asceticism (tapas) has been stolen by impatience. You have been overpowered by your anger, though not emaciated by your asceticism (tapas).
क्षान्त्यास्पदं वै ब्राह्मण्यं क्रोधसंयमनन्तपः ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा ददौ शापं तयोरप्यमितद्युतिः ॥२०॥
एतच्छ्रुत्वा ददौ शापं तयोरप्यमितद्युतिः ॥२०॥
20. kṣāntyāspadaṃ vai brāhmaṇyaṃ krodhasaṃyamanantapaḥ .
etacchrutvā dadau śāpaṃ tayorapyamitadyutiḥ.

kṣāntyāspadam vai brāhmaṇyam krodhasaṃyamanam tapaḥ

Indeed, brahmin-ness (brāhmaṇya) is the abode of patience, and asceticism (tapas) is the control of anger. Having heard this, the one of immeasurable splendor also pronounced a curse upon them both.
एकस्याः कुष्ठमङ्गेषु भाव्यन्यस्यास्तथा क्षयः ।
तयोस्तथैव तज्जातं यथोक्तं तेन तत्क्षणात् ॥२१॥
तयोस्तथैव तज्जातं यथोक्तं तेन तत्क्षणात् ॥२१॥
21. ekasyāḥ kuṣṭhamaṅgeṣu bhāvyanyasyāstathā kṣayaḥ .
tayostathaiva tajjātaṃ yathoktaṃ tena tatkṣaṇāt.
tayostathaiva tajjātaṃ yathoktaṃ tena tatkṣaṇāt.

ekasyāḥ kuṣṭham aṅgeṣu bhāvi anyasyāḥ tathā kṣayaḥ |
tayoḥ tathā eva tat jātam yathā uktam tena tatkṣaṇāt
tayoḥ tathā eva tat jātam yathā uktam tena tatkṣaṇāt
21.
For one of them, leprosy (kuṣṭha) will appear on her limbs, and for the other, consumption (kṣaya) will likewise occur. For them both, it happened exactly as he had spoken, at that very moment.
ममाप्येवं महद्रक्षः समुपैति पदानुगम् ।
न शृणोषि महानादं तस्यादूरेऽपि गर्जतः ॥२२॥

22. mamāpyevaṃ mahadrakṣaḥ samupaiti padānugam .
na śṛṇoṣi mahānādaṃ tasyādūre'pi garjataḥ.
na śṛṇoṣi mahānādaṃ tasyādūre'pi garjataḥ.

mama api evam mahat rakṣaḥ samupaiti padānugam
| na śṛṇoṣi mahānādam tasya adūre api garjataḥ
| na śṛṇoṣi mahānādam tasya adūre api garjataḥ

Even for me, a great rākṣasa follows in my footsteps. Do you not hear its great roar, even though it is thundering nearby?
तृतीयमद्य दिवसं यन्मे पृष्ठन्न मुञ्चति ।
अस्त्रग्रामस्य सर्वस्य हृदज्ञाहमद्य ते ॥२३॥

23. tṛtīyamadya divasaṃ yanme pṛṣṭhanna muñcati .
astragrāmasya sarvasya hṛdajñāhamadya te.

tṛtīyam adya divasam yat me pṛṣṭam na muñcati
astragrāmasya sarvasya hṛdajñā aham adya te

23.
Today marks the third day that what was asked of me has not left me (i.e., I have held onto the knowledge). Today, I am indeed the one who knows the very essence of all weapons for you.
ते प्रयच्छामि मां रक्ष रक्षसोऽस्मान्महामते ।
प्रादात् स्वायम्भुवस्यादौ स्वयं रुद्रः पिनाकधृक् ॥२४॥

24. te prayacchāmi māṃ rakṣa rakṣaso'smānmahāmate .
prādāt svāyambhuvasyādau svayaṃ rudraḥ pinākadhṛk.

te prayacchāmi mām rakṣa rakṣasaḥ asmān mahāmate

I entrust myself to you. Protect me and us from demons (rakṣasas), O great-minded one. Rudra (Śiva) himself, the wielder of the Pināka (bow), originally gave [this knowledge/power] at the time of Svāyambhuva (Brahmā).
स्वायम्भुवो वसिष्ठाय सिद्धवर्याय दत्तवान् ।
तेनापि दत्तं मन्मातुः पित्रे चित्रायुधाय वै ॥२५॥
तेनापि दत्तं मन्मातुः पित्रे चित्रायुधाय वै ॥२५॥
25. svāyambhuvo vasiṣṭhāya siddhavaryāya dattavān .
tenāpi dattaṃ manmātuḥ pitre citrāyudhāya vai.

Svāyambhuva (Brahmā) gave it to Vasiṣṭha, the most excellent among the accomplished ones (siddhas). Indeed, by him (Vasiṣṭha), it was also given to my mother's father, Citrāyudha.
प्रादादौद्वाहिकं सोऽपि मत्पित्रे श्वशुरः स्वयम् ।
मयापि शिक्षितं वीर सकाशाद् बालया पितुः ॥२६॥

26. prādādaudvāhikaṃ so'pi matpitre śvaśuraḥ svayam .
mayāpi śikṣitaṃ vīra sakāśād bālayā pituḥ.

prādāt audvāhikam saḥ api matpitre śvaśuraḥ svayam
mayā api śikṣitam vīra sakāśāt bālayā pituḥ

He (Citrāyudha), being my father's father-in-law himself, also gave the bridal gift to my father. O hero, it was learned by me, even as a young girl, from my father.
हृदयं सकलास्त्राणामशेषरिपुनाशनम् ।
तदिदं गृह्यतां शीघ्रमशेषास्त्रपरायणम् ॥२७॥

27. hṛdayaṃ sakalāstrāṇāmaśeṣaripunāśanam .
tadidaṃ gṛhyatāṃ śīghramaśeṣāstraparāyaṇam.

27.

This is the essence of all weapons, capable of destroying all enemies. Therefore, swiftly accept this, the ultimate repository of all weapons.

Then slay this evil-minded one (durātman), this demon (rākṣasa) who has appeared.

Mārkaṇḍeya said: When it was thus spoken, then, having touched water, he (the sage) gave him (the supplicant) that essence of weapons, along with its secret knowledge of deployment and withdrawal.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रक्षस्तत्तदा भीषणाकृति ।
नर्दमानं महानादमाजगाम त्वरान्वितम् ॥३०॥

At that very moment, that terrifying-looking demon (rakṣas) swiftly approached, roaring with a tremendous sound.
मयाभिभूता किं त्राणमुपैषि द्रुतमेहि मे ।
भक्षामि किञ्चिरेणेति ब्रुवाणं तं ददर्श सः ॥३१॥

31. mayābhibhūtā kiṃ trāṇamupaiṣi drutamehi me .

You are overpowered by me; why do you seek protection? Come quickly to me! I will devour you in a little while!' He saw him speaking thus.
स्वरोचिश्चिन्तयामास दृष्ट्वा तं समुपागतम् ।
गृह्णात्वेष वचः सत्यं तस्यास्त्विति महामुनेः ॥३२॥

Having seen the approaching demon, Svaroci reflected: "Let him accept as true the word of the great sage (mahāmuni); may it be his (fate)."
जग्राह समुपेत्यैनां त्वरया सोऽपि राक्षसः ।
त्राहि त्राहीति करुणं विलपन्तीं सुमध्यमाम् ॥३३॥

Even that demon quickly approached and seized the slender-waisted woman who was piteously crying, "Save me! Save me!"
ततः स्वरोचिः संक्रुद्धश्चण्डास्त्रमतिभैरवम् ।
दृष्ट्यां निवेश्य तद्रक्षो ददर्शानिमिषेक्षणः ॥३४॥

Then, enraged and with unblinking eyes, Svaroci saw that demon, having fixed a fierce and exceedingly terrifying weapon in his gaze.
तदाभिभूतः स तदा तामुत्सृज्य निशाचरः ।
प्रसीद शाम्यतामस्त्रं श्रूयताञ्चेत्यभाषत ॥३५॥

Then, being overpowered, that demon (niśācaraḥ) abandoned [his efforts] and spoke thus: 'Please be gracious! Let this weapon (astra) be calmed, and listen to me!'
मोक्षितोषऽहं त्वया शापादतिघोरान्महाद्युते ।
प्रदत्तादतितीव्रेण ब्रह्ममित्रेण धीमता ॥३६॥

O greatly radiant one (mahādyute), I have been freed (mokṣa) by you from a very terrible curse, which was given by the exceedingly fierce and wise Brahmamitra.
उपकारी न मे त्वत्तो महाभागाधिकोऽपरः ।
येनाहं सुमहाकष्टान्महाशापाद्विमोक्षितः ॥३७॥

37. upakārī na me tvatto mahābhāgādhiko'paraḥ .

O exalted one (mahābhāga), no other benefactor greater than you exists for me, by whom I have been liberated (mokṣa) from the very great misery of a mighty curse.
स्वरोचिरुवाच ।
ब्रह्ममित्रेण मुनिना किन्निमित्तं महात्मना ।
शप्तस्त्वं कीदृशश्चैव शापो दत्तोऽभवत् पुरा ॥३८॥

Svaroci said: 'For what reason were you cursed by the great-souled (mahātmanā) sage Brahmamitra, and what kind of curse was given previously?'
राक्षसा उवाच ।
ब्रह्ममित्रोऽष्टधा भिन्नमायुर्वेदमधीतवान् ।
त्रयोदशाधिकारञ्च प्रगृह्याथर्वणो द्विजः ॥३९॥

The demon said: Brahmamitra, a twice-born (dvija) associated with the Atharva Veda, studied the Ayurveda, which is divided into eight parts, having thoroughly grasped its thirteen sections.
अहञ्चेन्दीवराख्येति ख्यातोऽस्या जनकोऽभवम् ।
विद्याधरपतेः पुत्रो नलनाभस्य खङ्गिनः ॥४०॥

40. ahañcendīvarākhyeti khyāto'syā janako'bhavam .

And I, known by the name Indīvara, became his (Brahmamitra's) father. I am the son of Nalanābha, the sword-wielding lord of the Vidyādharas.
मया च याचितः पुर्वं ब्रह्ममित्रोऽभवन्मुनिः ।
आयुर्वेदमशेषं मे भगवन् दातुमर्हसि ॥४१॥

41. mayā ca yācitaḥ purvaṃ brahmamitro'bhavanmuniḥ .

And Brahmamitra, whom I had previously requested, became a sage. (I had said to him): 'O Lord, you ought to grant me the complete Ayurveda.'
यदा तु बहुशो वीर प्रश्रयावनतस्य मे ।
न प्रादाद्याचितो विद्यामायुर्वेदात्मिकां मम ॥४२॥

42. yadā tu bahuśo vīra praśrayāvanatasya me .

But when, O hero, though I repeatedly requested him, and was humble with reverence, he did not grant me my knowledge, which embodies the essence of Ayurveda.
शिष्येभ्यो ददतस्तस्य मयान्तर्धानगेन हि ।
आयुर्वेदात्मिका विद्या गृहीताभूत्तदानघ ॥४३॥

43. śiṣyebhyo dadatastasya mayāntardhānagena hi .

O sinless one, while he was imparting it to his disciples, I, having become invisible, indeed acquired that knowledge which constitutes the essence (ātman) of Ayurveda.
गृहीतायान्तु विद्यायां मासैरष्टाभिरन्तरात् ।
ममातिहर्षादभवद्धासोऽतीव पुनः पुनः ॥४४॥

44. gṛhītāyāntu vidyāyāṃ māsairaṣṭābhirantarāt .

Indeed, after that knowledge was acquired, within a period of eight months, excessive laughter repeatedly arose from me due to my immense joy.
प्रत्यभिज्ञाय मां हासान्मुनिः कोपसमन्वितः ।
विकम्पिकन्धरः प्राह मामिदं परुषाक्षरम् ॥४५॥

Recognizing me from the laughter, the sage became filled with anger (kopa), and with a trembling neck, he spoke these harsh words to me.
राक्षसेनैव यस्मान्मे त्वयादृश्येन दुर्मते ।
हृता विद्यावहासश्च मामवज्ञाय वै कृतः ॥४६॥
हृता विद्यावहासश्च मामवज्ञाय वै कृतः ॥४६॥
46. rākṣasenaiva yasmānme tvayādṛśyena durmate .
hṛtā vidyāvahāsaśca māmavajñāya vai kṛtaḥ.

O evil-minded one, because you, invisible like a demon (rākṣasa) indeed, have stolen my knowledge, and moreover, you have disrespected me by making a mockery.
तस्मात्त्वं राक्षसः पाप मच्छापेन निराकृतः ।
भविष्यसि न सन्देहः सप्तरात्रेण दारुणः ॥४७॥
भविष्यसि न सन्देहः सप्तरात्रेण दारुणः ॥४७॥
47. tasmāttvaṃ rākṣasaḥ pāpa macchāpena nirākṛtaḥ .
bhaviṣyasi na sandehaḥ saptarātreṇa dāruṇaḥ.

tasmāt tvam rākṣasaḥ pāpa mat śāpena nirākṛtaḥ

Therefore, O sinful one, you will undoubtedly become a terrible demon, disfigured by my curse, within seven nights.
इत्युक्ते प्रणिपाताद्यैरुपचारैः प्रसादितः ।
स मामाह पुनर्विप्रस्तत्क्षणान्मृदुमानसः ॥४८॥

When this was said, the Brahmin (vipra), appeased by acts of reverence (praṇipāta) and other courtesies, immediately spoke to me again with a softened mind.
यन्मयोक्तमवश्यन्तद्भावि गन्धर्व नान्यथा ।
किन्तु त्वं राक्षसो भूत्वा पुनः स्वं प्राप्स्यसे वपुः ॥४९॥
किन्तु त्वं राक्षसो भूत्वा पुनः स्वं प्राप्स्यसे वपुः ॥४९॥
49. yanmayoktamavaśyantadbhāvi gandharva nānyathā .
kintu tvaṃ rākṣaso bhūtvā punaḥ svaṃ prāpsyase vapuḥ.

yat mayā uktam avaśyam tat bhāvi gandharva na anyathā
kintu tvam rākṣasaḥ bhūtvā punaḥ svam prāpsyase vapuḥ
kintu tvam rākṣasaḥ bhūtvā punaḥ svam prāpsyase vapuḥ

O Gandharva, what I have said will certainly happen; it will not be otherwise. However, having become a demon, you will regain your own form (vapus) again.
नष्टस्मृतिर्यदा क्रुद्धः स्वमपत्यञ्चिखादिषुः ।
निशाचरत्वं गन्तासि तदस्त्रानलतापितः ॥५०॥

50. naṣṭasmṛtiryadā kruddhaḥ svamapatyañcikhādiṣuḥ .
niśācaratvaṃ gantāsi tadastrānalatāpitaḥ.

When you, having lost your memory and being enraged, desire to eat your own offspring, you will then attain the state of a night-wanderer (niśācara), scorched by the fire of a weapon.
पुनः संज्ञामवाप्य स्वामवाप्स्यसि निजं वपुः ।
तथैव स्वमधिष्ठानं लोके गन्धर्वसंज्ञिते ॥५१॥

51. punaḥ saṃjñāmavāpya svāmavāpsyasi nijaṃ vapuḥ .

Having regained your consciousness (saṃjñā), you will recover your own body and, in the same way, your own abode in the world known as Gandharva.
सोऽहं त्वया महाभाग मोक्षितोऽस्मान्महाभयात् ।
निशाचरत्वाद् यद्वीर तेन मे प्रार्थनां कुरु ॥५२॥

O greatly fortunate one (mahābhāga), since I have been liberated by you from this great fear and from the state of being a night-stalker, O hero, therefore, please fulfill my request.
इमान्ते तनयां भार्यां प्रयच्छामि प्रतीच्छ ताम् ।
आयुर्वेदश्च सकलस्त्वष्टाङ्गो यो मया ततः ।
मुनेः सकाशात् संप्राप्तस्तं गृह्णीष्व महामते ॥५३॥

53. imānte tanayāṃ bhāryāṃ prayacchāmi pratīccha tām .

pratīccha tām āyurvedaḥ ca sakalaḥ

I offer this daughter as your wife; please accept her. Also, the entire eight-branched (aṣṭāṅga) science of Ayurveda, which I obtained from that sage, please accept that, O great-minded one (mahāmate).
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा प्रददौ विद्यां स च दिव्याम्बरोज्जवलः ।
स्त्रग्भूषणधरो दिव्यं पुराणं वपुरास्थितः ॥५४॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having spoken thus, he imparted the knowledge (vidyā). And he, radiant with divine garments, adorned with garlands and ornaments, had assumed a divine, ancient form.
दत्त्वा विद्यां ततः कन्यां स दातुमुपचक्रमे ।
तमाह सा तदा कन्या जनितारं स्वरूपिणम् ॥५५॥
तमाह सा तदा कन्या जनितारं स्वरूपिणम् ॥५५॥
55. dattvā vidyāṃ tataḥ kanyāṃ sa dātumupacakrame .

After imparting knowledge, he then began to give his daughter [in marriage]. At that time, that daughter spoke to her beautiful father.
अनुरागो ममाप्यत्र तातातीव महात्मनि ।
दर्शनादेव संजातो विशेषेणोपकारिणि ॥५६॥

56. anurāgo mamāpyatra tātātīva mahātmani .

Father, indeed, my deep affection (anurāga) for this exceedingly great-souled (mahātman) and especially benevolent person has arisen merely from seeing him.
किन्त्वेषा मे सखी सा च मत्कृते दुः खपीडिते ।
अतो नाभिलषे भोगान् भोक्तुमेतेन वै समम् ॥५७॥

57. kintveṣā me sakhī sā ca matkṛte duḥ khapīḍite .

But this friend of mine and also that other one are both suffering because of me. Therefore, I certainly do not desire to enjoy pleasures together with this person.
पुरुषैरपि नो शक्या कर्तुमित्थं नृशंसता ।
स्वभावरुचिरैर्मादृक् कथं योषित् करिष्यति ॥५८॥

58. puruṣairapi no śakyā kartumitthaṃ nṛśaṃsatā .
svabhāvarucirairmādṛk kathaṃ yoṣit kariṣyati.

Such cruelty (nṛśaṃsatā) cannot be committed even by men (puruṣa), particularly those of naturally pleasant disposition. How then can a woman (yoṣit) like me do it?
साहं यथा ते दुः खार्ते मत्कृते कन्यके पितः ।
तथा स्थास्यामि तद्दुः खे तच्छोकानलतापिता ॥५९॥

59. sāhaṃ yathā te duḥ khārte matkṛte kanyake pitaḥ .

O father, just as your two daughters are distressed with sorrow on my account, so too will I remain in their sorrow, afflicted by the fire of their grief.
स्वरोचिरुवाच ।
आयुर्वेदप्रसादेन ते करिष्ये पुनर्नवे ।
सख्यौ तव महाशोकं समुत्सृज सुमध्यमे ॥६०॥
आयुर्वेदप्रसादेन ते करिष्ये पुनर्नवे ।

Svaroci said: 'O slender-waisted one, by the grace of Ayurveda, I will make your two friends young again. Abandon your great sorrow!'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः पित्रा स्वयं दत्तां तां कन्यां स विधानतः ।
उपयेमे गिरौ तस्मिन् स्वरोचिश्चारुलोचवनाम् ॥६१॥

61. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ pitrā svayaṃ dattāṃ tāṃ kanyāṃ sa vidhānataḥ .

mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | tataḥ pitrā svayam dattām tām kanyām

61.
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, Svaroci married that maiden, who was given personally by her father according to proper rites, on that mountain. She had beautiful eyes.
दत्तान्तु तां तदा कन्यामभिशान्त्य च भामिनीम् ।
जगाम दिव्यया गत्यागन्धर्वः स्वपुरन्ततः ॥६२॥

62. dattāntu tāṃ tadā kanyāmabhiśāntya ca bhāminīm .

But then, having given that maiden and having pacified the angry woman, the Gandharva departed to his own city by a divine path.
स चापि सहितस्तन्व्या सदुद्यानन्तदा ययौ ।
कन्यकायुगलं यत्र तच्छापोत्थगदातुरम् ॥६३॥
कन्यकायुगलं यत्र तच्छापोत्थगदातुरम् ॥६३॥
63. sa cāpi sahitastanvyā sadudyānantadā yayau .
kanyakāyugalaṃ yatra tacchāpotthagadāturam.

And he, accompanied by the slender maiden, then went to a beautiful garden where a pair of maidens were suffering from a disease caused by a curse.
ततस्तयोः स तत्त्वज्ञो रोगघ्नैरौषधै रसैः ।
चकार नीरुजौ देहौ स्वरोचिरपराजितः ॥६४॥

64. tatastayoḥ sa tattvajño rogaghnairauṣadhai rasaiḥ .

Then Svarocis, the unconquered knower of truth (tattva), rendered their two bodies healthy with disease-destroying medicines and medicinal essences.
ततोऽतिशोभने कन्ये विमुक्ते व्याधितः शुभे ।
स्वकान्त्योद्योति दिग्भागं चक्राते तन्महीधरम् ॥६५॥

65. tato'tiśobhane kanye vimukte vyādhitaḥ śubhe .

Then the two exceedingly beautiful and auspicious maidens, freed from disease, illuminated the surrounding regions with their own radiance, making that mountain shine.
