जड उवाच ।
कृताहारं महात्मनामधिपं पवनाशिनाम् ।
उपासाञ्चक्रिरे पुत्रौ भूपालतनयस्तथा ॥१॥
1. jaḍa uvāca .
kṛtāhāraṃ mahātmanāmadhipaṃ pavanāśinām .
upāsāñcakrire putrau bhūpālatanayastathā.
1. jaḍa uvāca kṛtāhāraṃ mahātmanām adhipaṃ pavanāśinām
upāsāñcakrire putrau bhūpālatanayaḥ tathā
1. Jaḍa said: The two sons and the royal prince then served that lord of great souls (ātman) who consumes air, after he had completed his meal.
कथाभिरनुरूपाभिः स महात्मा भुजङ्गमः ।
प्रीतिं सञ्जनयामास पुत्रसख्युरुवाच च ॥२॥
2. kathābhiranurūpābhiḥ sa mahātmā bhujaṅgamaḥ .
prītiṃ sañjanayāmāsa putrasakhyuruvāca ca.
2. kathābhiḥ anurūpābhiḥ sa mahātmā bhujaṅgamaḥ
prītim sañjanayāmāsa putrasakhyuḥ uvāca ca
2. That great-souled serpent (mahātman) created affection with suitable stories and then spoke to the son's friend.
तव भद्र सुखं ब्रूहि गेहमभ्यागतस्य यत् ।
कर्तव्यमुत्सृजाशङ्कां पितरीव सुतो मयि ॥३॥
3. tava bhadra sukhaṃ brūhi gehamabhyāgatasya yat .
kartavyamutsṛjāśaṅkāṃ pitarīva suto mayi.
3. tava bhadra sukham brūhi geham abhyāgatasya yat
kartavyam utsṛja āśaṅkām pitari iva sutaḥ mayi
3. O good one, tell me what comfort should be offered to you, who have arrived at my home. Cast off all hesitation with me, just as a son would with his father.
रजतं वा सुवर्णं वा वस्त्रं वाहनमासनम् ।
यद्वाभिमतमत्यर्थं दुर्लभं तद्वृणुष्व माम् ॥४॥
4. rajataṃ vā suvarṇaṃ vā vastraṃ vāhanamāsanam .
yadvābhimatamatyarthaṃ durlabhaṃ tadvṛṇuṣva mām.
4. rajatam vā suvarṇam vā vastram vāhanam āsanam yat
vā abhimatam atyartham durlabham tat vṛṇuṣva mām
4. Silver or gold, clothing, a vehicle, or a seat – whatever is greatly desired and difficult to obtain, ask that from me.
कुवलयाश्व उवाच ।
तव प्रसादाद्भगवन् सुवर्णादि गृहे मम ।
पितुरस्ति ममाद्यापिन किञ्चित् कार्यमीदृशम् ॥५॥
5. kuvalayāśva uvāca .
tava prasādādbhagavan suvarṇādi gṛhe mama .
piturasti mamādyāpina kiñcit kāryamīdṛśam.
5. Kuvalayāśvaḥ uvāca tava prasādāt bhagavan suvarṇādi gṛhe
mama pituḥ asti mama adyāpi na kiñcit kāryam īdṛśam
5. Kuvalayashva said: "By your grace, O venerable one (bhagavan), I already possess gold and other such things at my home. There is no such task to be done for my father or for me even now."
ताते वर्षसहस्राणि शासतीमां वसुन्धराम् ।
तथैव त्वयि पातालं न मे याञ्चोन्मुकं मनः ॥६॥
6. tāte varṣasahasrāṇi śāsatīmāṃ vasundharām .
tathaiva tvayi pātālaṃ na me yāñconmukaṃ manaḥ.
6. tāte varṣasahasrāṇi śāsatīm imām vasundharām |
tathā eva tvayi pātālam na me yāñcā unmukam manaḥ
6. O father, though you have ruled this earth for thousands of years, and likewise (though) you (now govern) the netherworld, my mind is not inclined to beg.
ते स्वर्ग्याश्च सुपुण्याश्च येषां पितरि जीवति ।
तृणकोटिसमं वित्तं तारुण्याद्वित्तकोटिषु ॥७॥
7. te svargyāśca supuṇyāśca yeṣāṃ pitari jīvati .
tṛṇakoṭisamaṃ vittaṃ tāruṇyādvittakoṭiṣu.
7. te svargyāḥ ca supuṇyāḥ ca yeṣām pitari jīvati
| tṛṇakoṭisamam vittam tāruṇyāt vittakoṭiṣu
7. Those whose father is alive are heavenly and exceedingly virtuous. For them, wealth, even in millions, is considered as insignificant as a blade of grass when compared to youth.
मित्राणि तुल्यशिष्टानि तद्वद्देहमनामयम् ।
जनिता ध्रियते वित्तं यौवनं किन्नु नास्ति मे ॥८॥
8. mitrāṇi tulyaśiṣṭāni tadvaddehamanāmayam .
janitā dhriyate vittaṃ yauvanaṃ kinnu nāsti me.
8. mitrāṇi tulyasiṣṭāni tadvat deham anāmayam |
janitā dhriyate vittam yauvanam kim nu na asti me
8. I possess friends who are equally disciplined, a healthy body, a living father, wealth, and youth. What indeed do I not have?
असत्यर्थे नृणां याञ्चाप्रवणं जायते मनः ।
सत्यशेषे कथं याञ्चां मम जिह्वा करिष्यति ॥९॥
9. asatyarthe nṛṇāṃ yāñcāpravaṇaṃ jāyate manaḥ .
satyaśeṣe kathaṃ yāñcāṃ mama jihvā kariṣyati.
9. asati arthe nṛṇām yāñcāpravaṇam jāyate manaḥ
| satyāśeṣe katham yāñcām mama jihvā kariṣyati
9. When there is a lack of means for people, their mind becomes inclined to begging. But when all is present and complete, how could my tongue make a request?
यैर्न चिन्त्यं धनं किञ्चिन्मम गेहेऽस्ति नास्ति वा ।
पितृबाहुतरुच्छायां संश्रिताः सुखिनो हि ते ॥१०॥
10. yairna cintyaṃ dhanaṃ kiñcinmama gehe'sti nāsti vā .
pitṛbāhutarucchāyāṃ saṃśritāḥ sukhino hi te.
10. yaiḥ na cintyam dhanam kiñcit mama gehe asti na asti
vā pitṛbāhutarucchāyām saṃśritāḥ sukhinaḥ hi te
10. Those who do not concern themselves with whether there is any wealth in my house or not, they are truly happy, having taken refuge in the protective shade of a father.
ये तु बाल्यात् प्रभृत्येव विना पित्रा कुटुम्बिनः ।
ते सुखास्वादविभ्रंशान्मन्ये धात्रैव वञ्चिताः ॥११॥
11. ye tu bālyāt prabhṛtyeva vinā pitrā kuṭumbinaḥ .
te sukhāsvādavibhraṃśānmanye dhātraiva vañcitāḥ.
11. ye tu bālyāt prabhṛti eva vinā pitrā kuṭumbinaḥ te
sukha āsvāda vibhraṃśāt manye dhātṛ eva vañcitāḥ
11. But those who, from childhood onwards, have to support a family without a father, I believe they are deprived of the enjoyment of happiness and are truly cheated by fate (dhātṛ).
तद्वयं त्वत्प्रसादेन धनरत्नादिसञ्चयान् ।
पितृमुक्तान् प्रयच्छामः कामतो नित्यमर्थिनाम् ॥१२॥
12. tadvayaṃ tvatprasādena dhanaratnādisañcayān .
pitṛmuktān prayacchāmaḥ kāmato nityamarthinām.
12. tat vayam tvat prasādena dhana ratna ādi sañcayān
pitṛmuktān prayacchāmaḥ kāmataḥ nityam arthinām
12. Therefore, by your grace, we constantly give, as desired, to those who ask (arthin), the accumulations of wealth, jewels, and other treasures inherited from our ancestors.
तत् सर्वमिह संप्राप्तं यदङ्घ्रियुगलं तव ।
मच्चूडामणिना स्पृष्टं यच्चाङ्गस्पर्शमाप्तवान् ॥१३॥
13. tat sarvamiha saṃprāptaṃ yadaṅghriyugalaṃ tava .
maccūḍāmaṇinā spṛṣṭaṃ yaccāṅgasparśamāptavān.
13. tat sarvam iha saṃprāptam yat aṅghriyugalam tava
mat cūḍāmaṇinā spṛṣṭam yat ca aṅgasparśam āptavān
13. All that has been achieved here is that your pair of feet was touched by my crest-jewel, and that (my body) received your physical touch.
जड उवाच ।
इत्येवं प्रसृतं वाक्यमुक्तः पन्नगसत्तमः ।
प्राह राजसुतं प्रीत्या पुत्रयोरुपकारिणम् ॥१४॥
14. jaḍa uvāca .
ityevaṃ prasṛtaṃ vākyamuktaḥ pannagasattamaḥ .
prāha rājasutaṃ prītyā putrayorupakāriṇam.
14. jaḍaḥ uvāca iti evam prasṛtam vākyam uktaḥ
pannagasattamaḥ prāha rājasutam prītyā putrayoḥ upakāriṇam
14. Jaḍa said: Addressed by such an extensive speech, the best of serpents affectionately spoke to the king's son, who had been a benefactor to his two sons.
नाग उवाच ।
यदि रत्नसुवर्णादि मत्तोऽवाप्तुं न ते मनः ।
यदन्यन्मनसः प्रीत्यै तद्ब्रूहि त्वं ददाम्यहम् ॥१५॥
15. nāga uvāca .
yadi ratnasuvarṇādi matto'vāptuṃ na te manaḥ .
yadanyanmanasaḥ prītyai tadbrūhi tvaṃ dadāmyaham.
15. nāgaḥ uvāca yadi ratnasuvarṇādi mattaḥ avāptum na te
manaḥ yat anyat manasaḥ prītyai tat brūhi tvam dadāmi aham
15. The Nāga said: "If your mind does not desire to obtain jewels, gold, or other such things from me, then tell me whatever else would please your mind. I will give it to you."
कुवलयाश्व उवाच ।
भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादेन प्रार्थितस्य गृहे मम ।
सर्वमस्ति विशेषेण सम्प्राप्तं तव दर्शनात् ॥१६॥
16. kuvalayāśva uvāca .
bhagavaṃstvatprasādena prārthitasya gṛhe mama .
sarvamasti viśeṣeṇa samprāptaṃ tava darśanāt.
16. kuvalayāśvaḥ uvāca bhagavan tvatprasādena prārthitasya
gṛhe mama sarvam asti viśeṣeṇa samprāptam tava darśanāt
16. Kuvalayāśva said: "O venerable one, by your grace, everything that could be prayed for already exists in my home. Furthermore, I have especially attained everything by your mere sight."
कृतकृत्योऽस्मि चैतेन सफलं जीवितञ्च मे ।
यदङ्गसंश्लेषमितस्तव देवस्य मानुषः ॥१७॥
17. kṛtakṛtyo'smi caitena saphalaṃ jīvitañca me .
yadaṅgasaṃśleṣamitastava devasya mānuṣaḥ.
17. kṛtakṛtyaḥ asmi ca etena saphalam jīvitam ca
me yat aṅgasaṃśleṣamitaḥ tava devasya mānuṣaḥ
17. I am completely fulfilled by this, and my life has become fruitful, because I, a human, have longed for the embrace of you, the divine one.
ममोत्तमाङ्गे त्वत्पादरजसा यदिहास्पदम् ।
कृतं तेनैव न प्राप्तं किं मया पन्नगेश्वर ॥१८॥
18. mamottamāṅge tvatpādarajasā yadihāspadam .
kṛtaṃ tenaiva na prāptaṃ kiṃ mayā pannageśvara.
18. mama uttama-aṅge tvat-pāda-rajasā yadi iha āspadam
kṛtam tena eva na prāptam kim mayā pannageśvara
18. O king of serpents (pannageśvara), if a place has been made on my head, my highest limb, for the dust of your feet, then what is there that I have not already obtained by that very act? (Meaning: I have attained everything.)
यदि त्ववश्यं दातव्यो वरो मम यथेप्सितः ।
तत्पुण्यकर्मसंस्कारो हृदयान्मा व्यपैतु मे ॥१९॥
19. yadi tvavaśyaṃ dātavyo varo mama yathepsitaḥ .
tatpuṇyakarmasaṃskāro hṛdayānmā vyapaitu me.
19. yadi tu avaśyam dātavyaḥ varaḥ mama yathā-īpsitaḥ
tat puṇya-karma-saṃskāraḥ hṛdayāt mā vyapaitu me
19. But if a desired boon must certainly be granted to me, then may the impression (saṃskāra) of meritorious deeds never depart from my heart.
सुवर्णमणिरत्नादि वाहनं गृहमासनम् ।
स्त्रियोऽन्नपानं पुत्राश्च चारुमाल्यानुलेपन् ॥२०॥
20. suvarṇamaṇiratnādi vāhanaṃ gṛhamāsanam .
striyo'nnapānaṃ putrāśca cārumālyānulepan.
20. suvarṇa-maṇi-ratna-ādi vāhanam gṛham āsanam
striyaḥ anna-pānam putrāḥ ca cāru-mālya-anulepan
20. Gold, jewels, precious stones, and the like; conveyances, houses, seats; women, food and drink, and sons; beautiful garlands and ointments (anulepana).
एते च विविधाः कामा गीतवाद्यादिकञ्च यत् ।
सर्वमेतन्मम मतं फलं पुण्यवनस्पतेः ॥२१॥
21. ete ca vividhāḥ kāmā gītavādyādikañca yat .
sarvametanmama mataṃ phalaṃ puṇyavanaspateḥ.
21. ete ca vividhāḥ kāmāḥ gīta-vādya-ādikam ca yat
sarvam etat mama matam phalam puṇya-vanaspateḥ
21. And these various objects of enjoyment (kāmā), along with whatever pertains to singing, music, and so forth - all this, in my opinion, is merely the fruit of a meritorious tree.
तस्मान्नरेण तन्मुलः कार्यो यत्नः कृतात्मना ।
कर्तव्यः पुण्यसक्तानां न किञ्चिद्भुवि दुर्लभम् ॥२२॥
22. tasmānnareṇa tanmulaḥ kāryo yatnaḥ kṛtātmanā .
kartavyaḥ puṇyasaktānāṃ na kiñcidbhuvi durlabham.
22. tasmāt nareṇa tanmūlaḥ kāryaḥ yatnaḥ kṛtātmanā |
kartavyaḥ puṇyasaktānām na kiñcit bhuvi durlabham
22. Therefore, a person who has disciplined their self (ātman) should make an effort rooted in virtue. For those devoted to meritorious deeds, nothing is unattainable on earth.
अश्वतर उवाच ।
एवं भविष्यति प्राज्ञ तव धर्माश्रिता मतिः ।
सत्यञ्चैतत् फलं सर्वं धर्मस्योक्तं यथा त्वया ॥२३॥
23. aśvatara uvāca .
evaṃ bhaviṣyati prājña tava dharmāśritā matiḥ .
satyañcaitat phalaṃ sarvaṃ dharmasyoktaṃ yathā tvayā.
23. aśvatara uvāca | evam bhaviṣyati
prājña tava dharmāśritā matiḥ
| satyam ca etat phalam sarvam
dharmasya uktam yathā tvayā
23. Aśvatara said: 'So it shall be, O wise one. Your intellect (mati) relies upon natural law (dharma). And truly, all this fruit (phala) of natural law (dharma) has been spoken by you exactly as it is.'
तथाप्यवश्यं मद्गेहमागतेन त्वयाधुना ।
ग्राह्यं यन्मानुषे लोके दुष्प्राप्तं भवतो मतम् ॥२४॥
24. tathāpyavaśyaṃ madgehamāgatena tvayādhunā .
grāhyaṃ yanmānuṣe loke duṣprāptaṃ bhavato matam.
24. tathāpi avaśyam madgeham āgatena tvayā adhunā |
grāhyam yat mānuṣe loke duṣprāptam bhavataḥ matam
24. Nevertheless, now that you have certainly come to my house, you must accept that which you consider unattainable in the human world.
जड उवाच ।
तस्यैतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स तदा नृपनन्दनः ।
मुकावलोकनञ्चक्रे पन्नगेश्वरपुत्रयोः ॥२५॥
25. jaḍa uvāca .
tasyaitadvacanaṃ śrutvā sa tadā nṛpanandanaḥ .
mukāvalokanañcakre pannageśvaraputrayoḥ.
25. jaḍa uvāca | tasya etat vacanam śrutvā sa tadā
nṛpanandanaḥ | mūkāvalokanam ca cakre pannageśvaraputrayoḥ
25. Jaḍa said: 'Having heard his words, the king's son then looked silently at the two sons of the lord of serpents.'
ततस्तौ प्रणिपत्योभौ राजपुत्रस्य यन्मतम् ।
तत् पितुः सकलं वीरौ कथयामासतुः स्फुटम् ॥२६॥
26. tatastau praṇipatyobhau rājaputrasya yanmatam .
tat pituḥ sakalaṃ vīrau kathayāmāsatuḥ sphuṭam.
26. tataḥ tau praṇipatya ubhau rājaputrasya yat matam
tat pituḥ sakalam vīrau kathayāmāsatuḥ sphuṭam
26. Then, having bowed down, both those heroes clearly told their father all that was the prince's intention.
पुत्रापूचतुः ।
ततोऽस्य पत्नी दयिता श्रुत्वेमं विनिपातितम् ।
अत्यजद्दयितान् प्राणान् विप्रलब्धा दुरात्मना ॥२७॥
27. putrāpūcatuḥ .
tato'sya patnī dayitā śrutvemaṃ vinipātitam .
atyajaddayitān prāṇān vipralabdhā durātmanā.
27. putrāḥ ūcatuḥ tataḥ asya patnī dayitā śrutvā imam
vinipātitam atyajat dayitān prāṇān vipralabdhā durātmanā
27. The sons said: "Then, his beloved wife, having heard that he was killed, and having been deceived by the wicked one, abandoned her cherished life."
केनापि कृतवैरेण दानवेन कुबुद्धिना ।
गन्धर्वराजस्य सुता नाम्ना ख्याता मदालसा ॥२८॥
28. kenāpi kṛtavaireṇa dānavena kubuddhinā .
gandharvarājasya sutā nāmnā khyātā madālasā.
28. kena api kṛtavaireṇa dānāvena kubuddhinā
gandharvarājasya sutā nāmnā khyātā madālasā
28. (This was caused) by some evil-minded demon who had developed enmity; (the wife was) Madālasā, the famous daughter of the Gandharva king.
कुतज्ञोऽयं ततस्तात प्रतिज्ञां कृतवानिमाम् ।
नान्या भार्या भवित्रीति वर्जयित्वा मदालसाम् ॥२९॥
29. kutajño'yaṃ tatastāta pratijñāṃ kṛtavānimām .
nānyā bhāryā bhavitrīti varjayitvā madālasām.
29. kṛtajñaḥ ayam tataḥ tāta pratijñām kṛtavān imām
na anyā bhāryā bhavitrī iti varjayitvā madālasām
29. Therefore, O father, this grateful one (the prince) made this vow: 'There shall be no other wife, excluding Madālasā.'
द्रष्टुं तां चारुसर्वाङ्गीमयं वीर ऋतध्वजः ।
तात वाञ्छति यद्येतत् क्रियते तत् कृतं भवेत् ॥३०॥
30. draṣṭuṃ tāṃ cārusarvāṅgīmayaṃ vīra ṛtadhvajaḥ .
tāta vāñchati yadyetat kriyate tat kṛtaṃ bhavet.
30. draṣṭum tām cārusarvāṅgīm ayam vīra ṛtadhvajaḥ
tāta vāñchati yadi etat kriyate tat kṛtam bhavet
30. O hero, Ṛtadhvaja here wishes to see that woman with beautiful limbs. O dear one, if this (wish) is fulfilled, it will be considered as good as done.
अश्वतर उवाच ।
भूतैर्वियोगिनो योगस्तादृशैरेव तादृशः ।
कथमेतद्विना स्वप्नं मायां वा शम्बरोदिताम् ॥३१॥
31. aśvatara uvāca .
bhūtairviyogino yogastādṛśaireva tādṛśaḥ .
kathametadvinā svapnaṃ māyāṃ vā śambaroditām.
31. aśvatara uvāca bhūtaiḥ viyoginaḥ yogaḥ tādṛśaiḥ eva
tādṛśaḥ katham etat vinā svapnam māyām vā śambarauditām
31. Aśvatara said: For those separated from their physical forms (bhūtas), how can such a reunion (yoga) with similar ones occur, except through a dream or an illusion (māyā) created by Śambara?
जड उवाच ।
प्रणिपत्य भुजङ्गेशं पुत्रः शत्रुजितस्ततः ।
प्रत्युवाच महात्मानं प्रेमलज्जासमन्वितः ॥३२॥
32. jaḍa uvāca .
praṇipatya bhujaṅgeśaṃ putraḥ śatrujitastataḥ .
pratyuvāca mahātmānaṃ premalajjāsamanvitaḥ.
32. jaḍa uvāca praṇipatya bhujaṅgeśam putraḥ śatrujitaḥ
tataḥ pratyuvāca mahātmānam premalajjāsamānvitaḥ
32. Jaḍa said: Then, the son of Śatrujit, filled with love and shyness, bowed down to the lord of serpents and replied to the great soul (mahātman).
मायामयीमप्यधुना मम तात मदालसाम् ।
यदि दर्शयते मन्ये परं कृतमनुग्रहम् ॥३३॥
33. māyāmayīmapyadhunā mama tāta madālasām .
yadi darśayate manye paraṃ kṛtamanugraham.
33. māyāmayīm api adhunā mama tāta madālasām
yadi darśayate manye param kṛtam anugraham
33. O dear one, if you would now show me my Madālasā, even if she is merely an illusion (māyā), I would consider that the greatest favor (anugraha) has been bestowed upon me.
अश्वतर उवाच ।
तस्मात् पश्येह वत्स त्वं मायाञ्चेद् द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ।
अनुग्राह्यो भवान् गेहं बालोऽप्यभ्यागतो गुरुः ॥३४॥
34. aśvatara uvāca .
tasmāt paśyeha vatsa tvaṃ māyāñced draṣṭumicchasi .
anugrāhyo bhavān gehaṃ bālo'pyabhyāgato guruḥ.
34. aśvataraḥ uvāca tasmāt paśya iha vatsa tvam māyām cet draṣṭum
icchasi anugrāhyaḥ bhavān geham bālaḥ api abhyāgataḥ guruḥ
34. Ashvatara said: "Therefore, my son, if you wish to behold the illusion (māyā), look here. You are to be honored in our home, for even a child who comes as a guest is considered a preceptor (guru)."
जड उवाच ।
आनयामास नागेन्द्रो गृहगुप्तां मदालसाम् ।
तेषां संमोहनार्थाय ज्जल्प च ततः स्फुटम् ॥३५॥
35. jaḍa uvāca .
ānayāmāsa nāgendro gṛhaguptāṃ madālasām .
teṣāṃ saṃmohanārthāya jjalpa ca tataḥ sphuṭam.
35. jaḍaḥ uvāca ānayāmāsa nāga-indraḥ gṛha-guptām madālasām
teṣām saṃmohana-arthāya jalpa ca tataḥ sphuṭam
35. Jaḍa said: "The lord of serpents brought Madālasā, who was protected in the house. Then, for the purpose of bewildering them, he spoke clearly."
दर्शयामास च तदा राजपुत्राय तां शुभाम् ।
सेयं न वेति ते भार्या राजपुत्र मदालसा ॥३६॥
36. darśayāmāsa ca tadā rājaputrāya tāṃ śubhām .
seyaṃ na veti te bhāryā rājaputra madālasā.
36. darśayāmāsa ca tadā rāja-putrāya tām śubhām sā
iyam na vā iti te bhāryā rāja-putra madālasā
36. And then he showed that beautiful woman to the prince and asked, 'O Prince, is this Madālasā your wife, or is she not?'
जड उवाच ।
स दृष्ट्वा तां तदा तन्वीं तत्क्षणात् विगतत्रपः ।
प्रियेति तामभिमुखं ययौ वाचमुदीरयन् ।
निवारयामास च तं नागः सोऽश्वतरस्त्वरन् ॥३७॥
37. jaḍa uvāca .
sa dṛṣṭvā tāṃ tadā tanvīṃ tatkṣaṇāt vigatatrapaḥ .
priyeti tāmabhimukhaṃ yayau vācamudīrayan .
nivārayāmāsa ca taṃ nāgaḥ so'śvatarastvaran.
37. jaḍaḥ uvāca saḥ dṛṣṭvā tām tadā tanvīm
tat-kṣaṇāt vigata-trapaḥ priye iti tām
abhimukham yayau vācam udīrayan nivārayāmāsa
ca tam nāgaḥ saḥ aśvataraḥ tvaran
37. Jaḍa said: "Upon seeing that slender woman then, he immediately became free from shame. Uttering the word 'O beloved!', he went towards her. And that serpent Ashvatara, hurrying, restrained him."
अश्वतर उवाच ।
मायेयं पुत्र मा स्प्राक्षीः प्रागेव कथितं तव ।
अन्तर्धानमुपैत्याशु माया संस्पर्शनादिभिः ॥३८॥
38. aśvatara uvāca .
māyeyaṃ putra mā sprākṣīḥ prāgeva kathitaṃ tava .
antardhānamupaityāśu māyā saṃsparśanādibhiḥ.
38. aśvataraḥ uvāca māyā iyam putra mā sprākṣīḥ prāk eva
kathitam tava antardhānam upaiti āśu māyā saṃsparśanādibhiḥ
38. Aśvatara spoke: "Son, do not touch this; it is an illusion (māyā). It was already explained to you earlier that illusion (māyā) quickly vanishes by touching and similar actions."
ततः पपात मेदिन्यां स तु मूर्च्छापरिप्लुतः ।
हा प्रियेति वदन् सोऽथ चिन्तयामास भामिनीम् ॥३९॥
39. tataḥ papāta medinyāṃ sa tu mūrcchāpariplutaḥ .
hā priyeti vadan so'tha cintayāmāsa bhāminīm.

hā priyā iti vadan saḥ atha cintayāmāsa bhāminīm
39. Then, overcome by unconsciousness (mūrchā), he fell to the ground (medinī). Saying, "Ah, beloved!" he then pondered about the beautiful woman (bhāminī).
अहो स्नेहोऽस्य नृपतेर्ममोपर्यचलं मनः ।
येनायं पातनोऽरीणां विना शस्त्रेण पातितः ॥४०॥
40. aho sneho'sya nṛpatermamoparyacalaṃ manaḥ .
yenāyaṃ pātano'rīṇāṃ vinā śastreṇa pātitaḥ.
40. aho snehaḥ asya nṛpateḥ mama upari acalam manaḥ
yena ayam pātanaḥ arīṇām vinā śastreṇa pātitaḥ
40. Oh, what unwavering affection this king (nṛpati) has for me, and what a steady mind (manas) fixed upon me! It is by this (attachment) that he, who is accustomed to felling his enemies, has himself been felled without a weapon.
मायेति दर्शिता तेन मिथ्या मायेति यत्स्फुटम् ।
वाय्वम्बुतेजसां भुमेराकाशस्य च चेष्टया ॥४१॥
41. māyeti darśitā tena mithyā māyeti yatsphuṭam .
vāyvambutejasāṃ bhumerākāśasya ca ceṣṭayā.
41. māyā iti darśitā tena mithyā māyā iti yat sphuṭam
vāyvambutejasām bhūmeḥ ākāśasya ca ceṣṭayā
41. By him, it was clearly shown that this is an illusion (māyā), a false (mithyā) one, created by the activity (ceṣṭā) of wind (vāyu), water (ambu), fire (tejas), earth (bhūmi), and space (ākāśa).
जड उवाच ।
ततः कुवलयाश्वं तं समाश्वास्य भुजङ्गमः ।
कथयामास तत् सर्वं मृतसञ्जीवनादिकम् ॥४२॥
42. jaḍa uvāca .
tataḥ kuvalayāśvaṃ taṃ samāśvāsya bhujaṅgamaḥ .
kathayāmāsa tat sarvaṃ mṛtasañjīvanādikam.
42. jaḍa uvāca tataḥ kuvalayāśvam tam samāśvāsya
bhujaṅgamaḥ kathayāmāsa tat sarvam mṛtasañjīvanādikam
42. Jaḍa said: Then the serpent, having reassured Kuvalayāśva, narrated everything, beginning with the revival (mṛtasañjīvana) of the dead.
ततः प्रहृष्टः प्रतिलभ्य कान्तां प्रणम्य नागं निजगाम सोऽथ ।
सुशोभमानः स्वपुरं तमश्वम् आरुह्य संचिन्तितमभ्युपतेम् ॥४३॥
43. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ pratilabhya kāntāṃ praṇamya nāgaṃ nijagāma so'tha .
suśobhamānaḥ svapuraṃ tamaśvam āruhya saṃcintitamabhyupatem.
43. tataḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ pratilabhya kāntām
praṇamya nāgam nijagāma saḥ
atha suśobhamānaḥ svapuram tam
aśvam āruhya sañcintitam abhyupetum
43. Then, delighted after regaining his beloved (wife) and bowing to the serpent, he departed. Mounting that horse, he, looking splendid, returned to his own city to obtain what he had desired.
