मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः स ताभिः सहितः पत्नीभिरमरद्युतिः ।
रराम तस्मिन् शैलेन्द्रे रम्यकानननिर्झरे ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ sa tābhiḥ sahitaḥ patnībhiramaradyutiḥ .

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then he, radiant like the immortals, accompanied by those wives, enjoyed himself on that chief of mountains, which had beautiful forests and waterfalls.
सर्वोपभोगरत्नानि मधूनि मधुराणि च ।
निधयः समुपाजह्रुः पद्मिन्या वशवर्तिनः ॥२॥
2. sarvopabhogaratnāni madhūni madhurāṇi ca .
nidhayaḥ samupājahruḥ padminyā vaśavartinaḥ.
2. sarvopabhogaratnāni madhūni madhurāṇi ca |
nidhayaḥ samupājahruḥ padminyāḥ vaśavartinaḥ
2. The treasures, subservient to Padmī (Lakṣmī), brought forth all jewels for enjoyment and sweet honeys.
स्त्रजो वस्त्राण्यलङ्कारान् गन्धाढ्यमनुलेपनम् ।
आसनान्यतिशुभ्राणि काञ्चनानि यथेच्छया ॥३॥
3. strajo vastrāṇyalaṅkārān gandhāḍhyamanulepanam .
āsanānyatiśubhrāṇi kāñcanāni yathecchayā.
3. srajaḥ vastrāṇi alaṅkārān gandhāḍhyam anulepanam
āsanāni atiśubhrāṇi kāñcanāni yathecchayā
3. [They were provided with] garlands, clothing, ornaments, fragrant ointments, and very radiant golden seats, all according to their desire.
सौवर्णानि महाभाग करकान् भाजनानि च ।
तथा शय्याश्च विविधा दिव्यैरास्तरणैर्युताः ॥४॥
4. sauvarṇāni mahābhāga karakān bhājanāni ca .
tathā śayyāśca vividhā divyairāstaraṇairyutāḥ.
4. sauvarṇāni mahābhāga karakān bhājanāni ca tathā
śayyāḥ ca vividhāḥ divyaiḥ āstaraṇaiḥ yutāḥ
4. O exalted one, [there were also] golden pitchers and vessels, and various beds, endowed with divine coverings.
एवं स ताभिः सहितो दिव्यगन्धाधिवासिते ।
रराम स्वरुचिर्भाभिर्भासिते वरपर्वते ॥५॥
5. evaṃ sa tābhiḥ sahito divyagandhādhivāsite .
rarāma svarucirbhābhirbhāsite varaparvate.
5. evam sa tābhiḥ sahitaḥ divyagandhadhivāsite
rarāma svaruciḥ bhābhiḥ bhāsite varaparvate
5. Thus, accompanied by them, he delighted on that excellent mountain, which was scented with divine fragrances and illumined by the brilliance of his own splendor.
ताश्चापि सह तेनेति लेभिरे मुदमुत्तमाम् ।
रममाणा यथा स्वर्गे तथा तत्र शिलोच्चये ॥६॥
6. tāścāpi saha teneti lebhire mudamuttamām .
ramamāṇā yathā svarge tathā tatra śiloccaye.
6. tāḥ ca api saha tena iti lebhire mudam uttamām
ramamāṇāḥ yathā svarge tathā tatra śiloccaye
6. And they too, accompanied by him, truly obtained supreme joy, delighting on that mountain just as they would in heaven.
कलहंसी जगादैकां चक्रवाकीं जले सतीम् ।
तस्य तासाञ्च ललिते सम्बन्धे च स्पृहावती ॥७॥
7. kalahaṃsī jagādaikāṃ cakravākīṃ jale satīm .
tasya tāsāñca lalite sambandhe ca spṛhāvatī.
7. kalahaṃsī jagāda ekām cakravākīm jale satīm
tasya tāsām ca lalite sambandhe ca spṛhāvatī
7. A beautiful swan spoke to a female ruddy shelduck who was in the water. She (the swan) longed for the charming relationship shared by him and her.
धन्योऽयमतिपुण्योऽयं योऽय यौवनगोचरः ।
दयिताभिः सहैताभिर्भुङ्क्ते भोगानभीप्सितान् ॥८॥
8. dhanyo'yamatipuṇyo'yaṃ yo'ya yauvanagocaraḥ .
dayitābhiḥ sahaitābhirbhuṅkte bhogānabhīpsitān.
8. dhanyaḥ ayam atipuṇyaḥ ayam yaḥ ayam yauvanagocaraḥ
dayitābhiḥ saha etābhiḥ bhuṅkte bhogān abhīpsitān
8. Fortunate is this person, and extremely meritorious is this person, who is experiencing the prime of youth. He enjoys his desired pleasures together with these beloved women.
सन्ति यौवनिनः श्लाघ्यास्तत्पत्न्यो नातिशोभनाः ।
जगत्यामल्पकाः पत्न्यः पतयश्चातिशोभनाः ॥९॥
9. santi yauvaninaḥ ślāghyāstatpatnyo nātiśobhanāḥ .
jagatyāmalpakāḥ patnyaḥ patayaścātiśobhanāḥ.
9. santi yauvaninaḥ ślāghyāḥ tatpatnyaḥ na atiśobhanāḥ
jagatyām alpakāḥ patnyaḥ patayaḥ ca atiśobhanāḥ
9. There are praiseworthy young men whose wives are not very charming. In this world, there are few wives, and few husbands, who are both exceedingly beautiful.
अभीष्टा कस्यचित् कान्ता कान्तः कस्याश्चिदीप्सितः ।
परस्परानुरागाढ्यं दाम्पत्यमतिदुर्लभम् ॥१०॥
10. abhīṣṭā kasyacit kāntā kāntaḥ kasyāścidīpsitaḥ .
parasparānurāgāḍhyaṃ dāmpatyamatidurlabham.
10. abhīṣṭā kasyacit kāntā kāntaḥ kasyāścit īpsitaḥ
parasparānurāgāḍhyam dāmpatyam atidurlabham
10. For some man, his wife is beloved; for some woman, her husband is desired. But a married couple rich in mutual affection is exceedingly rare.
धन्योऽयं दयिताभीष्टो ह्येताश्चास्यातिवल्लभाः ।
परस्परानुरागो हि धन्यानामेव जायते ॥११॥
11. dhanyo'yaṃ dayitābhīṣṭo hyetāścāsyātivallabhāḥ .
parasparānurāgo hi dhanyānāmeva jāyate.
11. dhanyaḥ ayam dayitā abhīṣṭaḥ hi etāḥ ca asya
ativallabhāḥ parasparānurāgaḥ hi dhanyānām eva jāyate
11. This man is indeed fortunate, desired by his beloved, and these women are exceedingly dear to him. True mutual affection, after all, only arises among the blessed.
एतन्निशम्यवचनं कलहंसीसमीरितम् ।
उवाच चक्रवाकी तां नातिविस्मितमानसा ॥१२॥
12. etanniśamyavacanaṃ kalahaṃsīsamīritam .
uvāca cakravākī tāṃ nātivismitamānasā.
12. etat niśamya vacanam kalahaṃsīsamīritam
uvāca cakravākī tām na ativismitamānasā
12. Hearing these words uttered by the female swan, the female ruddy shelduck replied to her, her mind not exceedingly astonished.
नायं धन्यो यतो लज्जा नान्यस्त्रीसन्निकर्षतः ।
अन्यां स्त्रियमयं भुङ्क्ते न सर्वास्वस्य मानसम् ॥१३॥
13. nāyaṃ dhanyo yato lajjā nānyastrīsannikarṣataḥ .
anyāṃ striyamayaṃ bhuṅkte na sarvāsvasya mānasam.
13. na ayam dhanyaḥ yataḥ lajjā na anyastrīsannikarṣataḥ
anyām striyam ayam bhuṅkte na sarvāsu asya mānasam
13. This man is not fortunate, because he feels no shame from being close to another woman. He enjoys another woman, and his mind is not devoted to all of them.
चित्तानुराग एकस्मिन्नधिष्ठाने यतः सखि ।
ततो हि प्रीतिमानेष भार्यासु भविता कथम् ॥१४॥
14. cittānurāga ekasminnadhiṣṭhāne yataḥ sakhi .
tato hi prītimāneṣa bhāryāsu bhavitā katham.
14. cittānurāgaḥ ekasmin adhiṣṭhāne yataḥ sakhi
tataḥ hi prītimān eṣa bhāryāsu bhavitā katham
14. O friend, since the mind's affection (anurāga) is fixed on a single object, how can this man then have love for his wives?
एता न दयिताः पत्युर्नैतासां दयितः पतिः ।
विनोदमात्रमेवैता यथा परिजनोऽपरः ॥१५॥
15. etā na dayitāḥ patyurnaitāsāṃ dayitaḥ patiḥ .
vinodamātramevaitā yathā parijano'paraḥ.
15. etāḥ na dayitāḥ patyuḥ na etāsām dayitaḥ patiḥ
| vinodamātram eva etāḥ yathā parijanaḥ aparaḥ
15. These women are not dear to their husband, nor is their husband dear to them. Indeed, they are merely a source of amusement, just like any other attendant.
एतासाञ्च यदिष्टोऽयं तत् किं प्राणान्न मुञ्चति ।
आलिङ्गत्यपरां कान्तां ध्यातो वै कान्तयान्यया ॥१६॥
16. etāsāñca yadiṣṭo'yaṃ tat kiṃ prāṇānna muñcati .
āliṅgatyaparāṃ kāntāṃ dhyāto vai kāntayānyayā.
16. etāsām ca yadi iṣṭaḥ ayam tat kim prāṇān na muñcati
| āliṅgati aparām kāntām dhyātaḥ vai kāntayā anyayā
16. If he were truly dear to these women, why would he not lay down his life (for them)? Instead, he embraces one beloved while being longed for by yet another.
विद्याप्रदानमूल्येन विक्रीतो ह्येष भृत्यवत् ।
प्रवर्तते न हि प्रेम समं बह्वीषु तिष्ठति ॥१७॥
17. vidyāpradānamūlyena vikrīto hyeṣa bhṛtyavat .
pravartate na hi prema samaṃ bahvīṣu tiṣṭhati.
17. vidyāpradānamūlyena vikrītaḥ hi eṣaḥ bhṛtyavat
| pravartate na hi prema samam bahvīṣu tiṣṭhati
17. Indeed, this man is sold like a servant for the price of imparting knowledge. True love (prema) certainly does not remain equally distributed among many women.
कलहंसि पतिर्धन्यो मम धन्याहमेव च ।
यस्यैकस्याञ्चिरं चित्तं यस्याश्चैकत्र संस्थितम् ॥१८॥
18. kalahaṃsi patirdhanyo mama dhanyāhameva ca .
yasyaikasyāñciraṃ cittaṃ yasyāścaikatra saṃsthitam.
18. kalahaṃsi patiḥ dhanyaḥ mama dhanyā aham eva ca |
yasya ekasyām ciram cittam yasyāḥ ca ekatra saṃsthitam
18. O female swan, blessed is my husband, and indeed I too am blessed! For his mind (citta) remains steadfastly on one woman, and her mind (citta) is equally fixed on him alone.
सर्वसत्त्वरुतज्ञोऽसौ स्वरोचिरपराजितः ।
निशम्य लज्जितो दध्यौ सत्यमेव हि नानृतम् ॥१९॥
19. sarvasattvarutajño'sau svarociraparājitaḥ .
niśamya lajjito dadhyau satyameva hi nānṛtam.
19. sarvasattvarutajñaḥ asau svarociḥ aparājitaḥ
niśamya lajjitaḥ dadhyau satyam eva hi na anṛtam
19. That unconquered Svaroci, who understood the calls of all creatures, became ashamed upon hearing this and pondered, "Indeed, only truth prevails, never falsehood."
ततो वर्षशते याते रममाणो महागिरौ ।
रममाणः समं ताभिर्ददर्श पुरतो मृगम् ॥२०॥
20. tato varṣaśate yāte ramamāṇo mahāgirau .
ramamāṇaḥ samaṃ tābhirdadarśa purato mṛgam.
20. tataḥ varṣaśate yāte ramamāṇaḥ mahāgirau
ramamāṇaḥ samam tābhiḥ dadarśa purataḥ mṛgam
20. Then, after a hundred years had passed, while he (Svaroci) was enjoying himself on a great mountain, he saw a deer in front of him, which was also delighting together with its female companions.
सुस्निग्धपीनावयवं मृगयूथविहारिणम् ।
वासिताभिः सुरूपाभिर्मृगीभिः परिवारितम् ॥२१॥
21. susnigdhapīnāvayavaṃ mṛgayūthavihāriṇam .
vāsitābhiḥ surūpābhirmṛgībhiḥ parivāritam.
21. susnigdhapīnāvayavam mṛgayūthavihāriṇam
vāsitābhiḥ surūpābhiḥ mṛgībhiḥ parivāritam
21. (He saw a deer) with very smooth and plump limbs, moving about among a herd of deer, and surrounded by beautiful female deer.
आकृष्टघ्राणपुटका जिघ्रन्तीस्तास्ततो मृगीः ।
उवाच स मृगो रामा लज्जात्यागेन गम्यताम् ॥२२॥
22. ākṛṣṭaghrāṇapuṭakā jighrantīstāstato mṛgīḥ .
uvāca sa mṛgo rāmā lajjātyāgena gamyatām.
22. ākṛṣṭaghrāṇapuṭakāḥ jighrantīḥ tāḥ tataḥ mṛgīḥ
uvāca saḥ mṛgaḥ rāmāḥ lajjātyāgena gamyatām
22. Then, that deer spoke to those female deer, who had drawn-up nostrils and were smelling (him), saying, "O beautiful ones, you should go without shame."
नाहं स्वरोचिस्तच्छीलो न चैवाहं सुलोचनाः ।
निर्लज्जा बहवः सन्ति तादृशास्तत्र गच्छतः ॥२३॥
23. nāhaṃ svarocistacchīlo na caivāhaṃ sulocanāḥ .
nirlajjā bahavaḥ santi tādṛśāstatra gacchataḥ.
23. na aham svarociḥ tat-śīlaḥ na ca eva aham sulocanāḥ
nir-lajjāḥ bahavaḥ santi tādṛśāḥ tatra gacchataḥ
23. I am neither Svaroćis nor do I possess his character. Nor am I Suloćanās. Many shameless individuals like those go there.
एका त्वनेकानुगता यथा हासास्पदं जने ।
अनेकाभिस्तथैवैको बोगदृष्ट्या निरीक्षितः ॥२४॥
24. ekā tvanekānugatā yathā hāsāspadaṃ jane .
anekābhistathaivaiko bogadṛṣṭyā nirīkṣitaḥ.
24. ekā tu anekā-anugatā yathā hāsa-āspadam jane
anekābhiḥ tathā eva ekaḥ bhoga-dṛṣṭyā nirīkṣitaḥ
24. Just as a single woman, when pursued by many, becomes an object of ridicule among people, similarly, a single man is eyed by many women with a view to enjoyment (bhoga).
तस्य धर्मक्रियाहानिरहन्यहनि जायते ।
सक्तोऽन्यभार्यया चान्यकामासक्तः सदैव सः ॥२५॥
25. tasya dharmakriyāhānirahanyahani jāyate .
sakto'nyabhāryayā cānyakāmāsaktaḥ sadaiva saḥ.
25. tasya dharma-kriyā-hāniḥ ahani ahani jāyate saktaḥ
anya-bhāryayā ca anya-kāma-āsaktaḥ sadā eva saḥ
25. The loss of his righteous (dharma) activities occurs day by day for him who is attached to another man's wife and always devoted to other desires.
यस्तादृशोऽन्यस्तच्छीलः परलोकपराङ्मुखः ।
तं कामयत भद्रं वो नाहं तुल्यः स्वरोचिषा ॥२६॥
26. yastādṛśo'nyastacchīlaḥ paralokaparāṅmukhaḥ .
taṃ kāmayata bhadraṃ vo nāhaṃ tulyaḥ svarociṣā.
26. yaḥ tādṛśaḥ anyaḥ tat-śīlaḥ paraloka-parāṅ-mukhaḥ
tam kāmayata bhadram vaḥ na aham tulyaḥ svarociṣā
26. Whoever is such another, having that nature, and is averse to the other world (paraloka) – desire him! May good fortune be upon you all. I am not equal to Svaroćis.
