मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति प्रतिज्ञाय तदा नरिष्यन्तसुतो दमः ।
कोपामर्षविवृत्ताक्षः श्भश्रुमावृत्य पाणिना ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti pratijñāya tadā nariṣyantasuto damaḥ .
kopāmarṣavivṛttākṣaḥ śbhaśrumāvṛtya pāṇinā.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having thus made a vow, Dama, the son of Nariṣyanta, with eyes widened from anger and indignation, stroked his beard with his hand.
हा हतोऽस्मीति पितरं ध्यात्वा देवं विनिंद्य च ।
प्रोवाच मंत्रिणः सर्वानानिनाय पुरोहितम् ॥२॥
2. hā hato'smīti pitaraṃ dhyātvā devaṃ viniṃdya ca .
provāca maṃtriṇaḥ sarvānānināya purohitam.
2. hā hataḥ asmi iti pitaram dhyātvā devam vinindya
ca pra uvāca mantriṇaḥ sarvān ānīnāya purohitam
2. “Alas, I am undone!” - thinking thus of his father and having reproached the gods, he then spoke to all his ministers and summoned the family priest.
दम उवाच ।
यदत्र कृत्यं तद्ब्रूत ताते प्राप्ते सुरालयम् ।
श्रुतं भवद्भिर्यत्प्रोक्तं तेन शूद्रतपस्विना ॥३॥
3. dama uvāca .
yadatra kṛtyaṃ tadbrūta tāte prāpte surālayam .
śrutaṃ bhavadbhiryatproktaṃ tena śūdratapasvinā.
3. damaḥ uvāca yat atra kṛtyam tat brūta tāte prāpte surālayam
śrutam bhavadbhiḥ yat proktam tena śūdra-tapasvinā
3. Dama said: Now that my father has attained the abode of the gods, tell me what must be done here. You have heard what was spoken by that ascetic of the śūdra class.
वृद्धस्तपस्वी स नृपो वानप्रस्थव्रते स्थितः ।
मौनव्रतधरोऽशस्त्रो मन्मात्रा चेन्द्रसेनया ॥४॥
4. vṛddhastapasvī sa nṛpo vānaprasthavrate sthitaḥ .
maunavratadharo'śastro manmātrā cendrasenayā.
4. vṛddhaḥ tapasvī saḥ nṛpaḥ vānaprasthavrate sthitaḥ
maunavratadharaḥ aśastraḥ manmātrā ca indrasenayā
4. That aged, ascetic king, observing the vow of a forest hermit (vānaprastha), maintaining a vow of silence, and unarmed, was with my mother and Indrasenā.
प्रोक्तं संसृष्टया स्वात्म्याद्याथातथ्यं वपुष्मते ।
तेनापि खड्गमाकृष्य जटां सव्येन पाणिना ॥५॥
5. proktaṃ saṃsṛṣṭayā svātmyādyāthātathyaṃ vapuṣmate .
tenāpi khaḍgamākṛṣya jaṭāṃ savyena pāṇinā.
5. proktam saṃsṛṣṭayā svātmyāt yathātathyam vapuṣmate
tena api khaḍgam ākṛṣya jaṭām savyena pāṇinā
5. The truth was spoken to the embodied one (the king) by my intimately connected (mother and Indrasenā), from her own person. Even he, drawing his sword and holding the matted hair (of his victim) with his left hand...
धृत्वा जघान दुष्टात्मा लोकनाथमनाथवत् ।
माता च संदिश्य हि मां धिक्छब्दं ब्रुवती सती ॥६॥
6. dhṛtvā jaghāna duṣṭātmā lokanāthamanāthavat .
mātā ca saṃdiśya hi māṃ dhikchabdaṃ bruvatī satī.
6. dhṛtvā jaghāna duṣṭātmā lokanātham anāthavat
mātā ca saṃdiśya hi mām dhik śabdam bruvatī satī
6. Even he (the king), becoming wicked-souled, having drawn his sword and holding the matted hair (of his victim) with his left hand, killed the lord of the world as if he were an orphan. And my mother, having indeed instructed me and uttering the word 'Shame!', being (present)...
मन्दभाग्यं च निःश्रीकं प्रविष्टा हव्यवाहनम् ।
तमालिंग्य नरिष्यन्तं प्रयाता त्रिदशालयम् ॥७॥
7. mandabhāgyaṃ ca niḥśrīkaṃ praviṣṭā havyavāhanam .
tamāliṃgya nariṣyantaṃ prayātā tridaśālayam.
7. mandabhāgyam ca niḥśrīkam praviṣṭā havyavāhanam
tam āliṅgya nariṣyantam prayātā tridaśālayam
7. Declaring me unfortunate and miserable, my mother entered the fire (havyavāhana). Having embraced me, who was about to die, she departed to the abode of the gods (tridaśālaya).
सोऽहमद्य करिष्यामि यन्मे मातुरुदीरितम् ।
हस्त्यश्वरथपादातं सैन्यं च परिकल्प्यताम् ॥८॥
8. so'hamadya kariṣyāmi yanme māturudīritam .
hastyaśvarathapādātaṃ sainyaṃ ca parikalpyatām.
8. saḥ aham adya kariṣyāmi yat me mātuḥ udīritam
hastyaśvarathapādātam sainyam ca parikalpyatām
8. So, today I will carry out what was instructed by my mother. Let an army consisting of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry be prepared.
अनिर्याप्य पितुर्वैरमहत्वा पितृघातकम् ।
अकृत्वा च वचो मातुर्जीवितुं किमिहोत्सहे ॥९॥
9. aniryāpya piturvairamahatvā pitṛghātakam .
akṛtvā ca vaco māturjīvituṃ kimihotsahe.
9. aniryāpya pituḥ vairam ahatvā pitṛghātakam
akṛtvā ca vacaḥ mātuḥ jīvitum kim iha utsahe
9. Without avenging my father's enmity, without killing my father's murderer, and without fulfilling my mother's instruction, how can I bear to live here?
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
मन्त्रिणस्तद्वचः श्रुत्वा हाहेत्युक्त्वा तथा च तत् ।
कृतवन्तो विमनसः सभृत्यबलवाहनाः ॥१०॥
10. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
mantriṇastadvacaḥ śrutvā hāhetyuktvā tathā ca tat .
kṛtavanto vimanasaḥ sabhṛtyabalavāhanāḥ.
10. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca mantriṇaḥ tat vacaḥ śrutvā hā hā iti
uktvā tathā ca tat kṛtavantaḥ vimanasaḥ sabhṛtyabalavāhanāḥ
10. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Hearing those words, the ministers, along with their servants, troops, and vehicles, became disheartened. Uttering 'Alas, alas!', they then carried out that command.
निर्ययुः सपरीवाराः पुरस्कृत्य दमं नृपम् ।
गृहीत्वा चाशिषो विप्रात्त्रिकालज्ञात्पुरोधसः ॥११॥
11. niryayuḥ saparīvārāḥ puraskṛtya damaṃ nṛpam .
gṛhītvā cāśiṣo viprāttrikālajñātpurodhasaḥ.
11. niryayuḥ saparīvārāḥ puraskṛtya damam nṛpam
gṛhītvā ca āśiṣaḥ viprāt trikālajñāt purodhasaḥ
11. They departed, accompanied by their families, having put King Dama at the forefront. And they received blessings from the Brahmin priest, who was conversant with past, present, and future.
अहिराडिव निःश्वस्य दमः प्रायाद्वपुष्मतम् ।
सीमापालादिसामन्तान्निघ्नन्याम्यां दिश त्वरा ॥१२॥
12. ahirāḍiva niḥśvasya damaḥ prāyādvapuṣmatam .
sīmāpālādisāmantānnighnanyāmyāṃ diśa tvarā.
12. ahiraṭ iva niḥśvasya damaḥ prāyāt vapuṣmatam
sīmāpālādisāmantān nighnan yāmyām diśam tvarā
12. Sighing like a great serpent, Dama advanced towards Vapuṣmat, slaying the frontier guards and other feudatories in the southern direction with great haste.
निरीक्ष्य तं समायान्तं वपुष्मान्मर्षपूरितः ।
संक्रन्दनसुतेनापि दमो ज्ञातो वपुष्मता ।
आयातः सपरीवारः सामात्यः सपरिच्छदः ॥१३॥
13. nirīkṣya taṃ samāyāntaṃ vapuṣmānmarṣapūritaḥ .
saṃkrandanasutenāpi damo jñāto vapuṣmatā .
āyātaḥ saparīvāraḥ sāmātyaḥ saparicchadaḥ.
13. nirīkṣya tam samāyāntam vapuṣmān
marṣa-pūritaḥ | saṃkrandana-sutena api
damaḥ jñātaḥ vapuṣmatā | āyātaḥ
sa-parīvāraḥ sa-āmātyaḥ sa-paricchadaḥ
13. Seeing him approaching, Vapuṣmat was filled with indignation. Dama was recognized by Vapuṣmat, who was also the son of Saṅkrandana. He (Dama) had arrived with his retinue, his ministers, and his paraphernalia.
अकंपितेन मनसा ससैन्यानि दिदेश ह ।
दूतं च प्रेषयामास निर्गम्य नगराद्बहिः ॥१४॥
14. akaṃpitena manasā sasainyāni dideśa ha .
dūtaṃ ca preṣayāmāsa nirgamya nagarādbahiḥ.
14. akampitena manasā sa-sainyāni dideśa ha |
dūtam ca preṣayām āsa nirgamya nagarāt bahiḥ
14. With an unperturbed mind, he (Vapuṣmat) commanded the armies. And having exited the city, he sent a messenger outside.
त्वं शीघ्रतरमागच्छ नरिष्यन्तः प्रतीक्षते ।
सभार्यक्षत्रबन्धो त्वं समायाहि ममान्तिकम् ॥१५॥
15. tvaṃ śīghrataramāgaccha nariṣyantaḥ pratīkṣate .
sabhāryakṣatrabandho tvaṃ samāyāhi mamāntikam.
15. tvam śīghrataram āgaccha Nariṣyantaḥ pratīkṣate |
sa-bhārya-kṣatrabandho tvam samāyāhi mama antikam
15. You come very quickly! Nariṣyanta (Vapuṣmat) is waiting. O kinsman of kṣatriyas, along with your wife, you come to my presence.
इमे मद्बाहुनिर्मुक्ताः शिता बाणाः पिपासिताः ।
भित्त्वा शरीरं सङ्ग्रामे पास्यन्ति रुधिरं तव ॥१६॥
16. ime madbāhunirmuktāḥ śitā bāṇāḥ pipāsitāḥ .
bhittvā śarīraṃ saṅgrāme pāsyanti rudhiraṃ tava.
16. ime madbāhunirmuktāḥ śitāḥ bāṇāḥ pipāsitāḥ
bhittvā śarīram saṅgrāme pāsyanti rudhiram tava
16. These sharp arrows, released from my arms, are thirsty and will pierce your body in battle to drink your blood.
श्रुत्वा दमस्तु तत्सर्वं दूतप्रोक्तं ययौ त्वरन् ।
स्मृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां पूर्वोक्तां निःश्वसमुरगो यथा ॥१७॥
17. śrutvā damastu tatsarvaṃ dūtaproktaṃ yayau tvaran .
smṛtvā pratijñāṃ pūrvoktāṃ niḥśvasamurago yathā.
17. śrutvā damaḥ tu tat sarvam dūtaproktam yayau tvaran
smṛtvā pratijñām pūrvoktām niḥśvasan uragaḥ yathā
17. Indeed, Dama, having heard everything spoken by the messenger, hurried away, remembering his previous vow and sighing like a snake.
आहूतसमरे चैव पुमान्सेनाविकत्थनः ।
ततो युद्धमतीवासीद्दमस्य च वपुष्मतः ॥१८॥
18. āhūtasamare caiva pumānsenāvikatthanaḥ .
tato yuddhamatīvāsīddamasya ca vapuṣmataḥ.
18. āhūtasamare ca eva pumān senāvikatthanaḥ
tataḥ yuddham atīva āsīt damasya ca vapuṣmataḥ
18. And indeed, when a boastful warrior was challenged to battle, a very great fight took place between Dama and the valiant one.
रथी च रथिना नागी नागिना हयिना हयी ।
अयुध्यन्त च विप्रर्षे तद्युद्धं तुमुलं ह्यभूत् ॥१९॥
19. rathī ca rathinā nāgī nāginā hayinā hayī .
ayudhyanta ca viprarṣe tadyuddhaṃ tumulaṃ hyabhūt.
19. rathī ca rathinā nāgī nāginā hayī hayinā ayudhyanta
ca viprarṣe tat yuddham tumulam hi abhūt
19. And charioteers fought with charioteers, elephant-warriors with elephant-warriors, and horse-warriors with horse-warriors. Indeed, O revered sage (viprarṣe), that battle was tumultuous.
पश्यतां सर्वदेवानां सिद्धगन्धर्वरक्षसाम् ।
चकम्पे वसुधा ब्रह्मन्युध्यमाने दमे युधि ॥२०॥
20. paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāṃ siddhagandharvarakṣasām .
cakampe vasudhā brahmanyudhyamāne dame yudhi.
20. paśyatām sarvadevānām siddhagandharvarakṣasām
cakampē vasudhā brahman yudhyamānē damē yudhi
20. O Brahmin, while Dama fought in battle, the earth trembled, witnessed by all the gods, Siddhas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas.
न गजो न रथी नाश्वस्तस्य बाणसहस्तु यः ।
ततो दमेन युयुधे सेनाध्यक्षो वपुष्मतः ॥२१॥
21. na gajo na rathī nāśvastasya bāṇasahastu yaḥ .
tato damena yuyudhe senādhyakṣo vapuṣmataḥ.
21. na gajaḥ na rathī na aśvaḥ tasya bāṇasahaḥ tu
yaḥ tataḥ damēna yuyudhē sēnādhyakṣaḥ vapuṣmataḥ
21. That one, who was an archer, had neither an elephant, nor a charioteer, nor a horse. Then Dama fought Vapuṣmat's army commander.
हृदि विव्याध च दम इषुणागाद्यमान्तिकम् ।
तस्मिन्निपतिते सैन्यं पलायनपरं ह्यभूत् ॥२२॥
22. hṛdi vivyādha ca dama iṣuṇāgādyamāntikam .
tasminnipatite sainyaṃ palāyanaparaṃ hyabhūt.
22. hṛdi vivyādha ca damaḥ iṣuṇā agāt yamāntikam
tasmin nipatitē sainyam palāyanaparam hi abhūt
22. And Dama pierced him in the heart with an arrow, sending him to his death. When he had fallen, the army indeed became intent on fleeing.
स स्वामिनं ततः प्राह दमः शत्रुं दमस्तथा ।
क्व यासि दुष्ट पितरं घातयित्वा तपस्विनम् ॥२३॥
23. sa svāminaṃ tataḥ prāha damaḥ śatruṃ damastathā .
kva yāsi duṣṭa pitaraṃ ghātayitvā tapasvinam.
23. saḥ svāminam tataḥ prāha damaḥ śatrum dama tathā
kva yāsi duṣṭa pitaram ghātayitvā tapasvinam
23. Then Dama said to his lord, the enemy: 'O Dama, where are you going, wicked one, having killed the ascetic father?'
अशस्त्रं च तपस्यन्तं क्षत्रियोऽसि निवर्तताम् ।
ततो निवृत्य स दमं योधयामास सानुजः ॥२४॥
24. aśastraṃ ca tapasyantaṃ kṣatriyo'si nivartatām .
tato nivṛtya sa damaṃ yodhayāmāsa sānujaḥ.
24. aśastram ca tapasyantam kṣatriyaḥ asi nivartatām
tataḥ nivṛtya saḥ damam yodhayāmāsa sānujah
24. Let a kṣatriya turn back from attacking an unarmed individual practicing austerities (tapas). Then, having desisted from such an action, he, along with his younger brother, engaged Dama in battle.
स पुत्रः सह सम्बन्धिबान्धवैर्युयुधे रथी ।
ततः शरासनान्मुक्तबाणैर्व्याप्तास्ततो दिशः ॥२५॥
25. sa putraḥ saha sambandhibāndhavairyuyudhe rathī .
tataḥ śarāsanānmuktabāṇairvyāptāstato diśaḥ.
25. saḥ putraḥ saha sambandhibāndhavaiḥ yuyudhe rathī
tataḥ śarāsanānmuktabāṇaiḥ vyāptāḥ tataḥ diśaḥ
25. That son, a charioteer, fought along with his kinsmen and relatives. Thereupon, the directions were filled with arrows released from bows.
दमं च सरथं चाशु शरजालैरपूरयत् ।
ततः पितृवधोत्थेन कोपेन स दमस्तथा ॥२६॥
26. damaṃ ca sarathaṃ cāśu śarajālairapūrayat .
tataḥ pitṛvadhotthena kopena sa damastathā.
26. damam ca saratham ca āśu śarajālaiḥ apūrayat
tataḥ pitṛvadhotthena kopena saḥ damaḥ tathā
26. He quickly covered Dama, along with his chariot, with showers of arrows. Then, Dama, with anger arisen from the slaying of his father, thus (prepared to retaliate).
चिच्छेद ताञ्छरान्स्तेषां विव्याधान्यैश्च तानपि ।
एकेनैकेन बाणेन सप्त पुत्रान्स्तथा द्विज ॥२७॥
27. ciccheda tāñcharānsteṣāṃ vivyādhānyaiśca tānapi .
ekenaikena bāṇena sapta putrānstathā dvija.
27. ciccheda tān śarān teṣām vivyādha anyaiḥ ca tān
api ekena ekena bāṇena sapta putrān tathā dvija
27. (Dama) cut off those arrows (of the opponents), and with other arrows, he also struck the opponents themselves. Then, O brahmin, he (struck) the seven sons, each with a single arrow.
सम्बन्धिबान्धवान्मित्रान्निनाय यमसादनम् ।
वपुष्मान्स रथी क्रोधान्निहतात्मजबान्धवः ॥२८॥
28. sambandhibāndhavānmitrānnināya yamasādanam .
vapuṣmānsa rathī krodhānnihatātmajabāndhavaḥ.
28. sambandhibāndhavān mitrān nināya yamasādanam |
vapuṣmān saḥ rathī krodhāt nihatātmajabāndhavaḥ
28. That mighty charioteer (rathī), whose son and relatives had been slain, out of anger, sent the relatives, kinsmen, and friends (of his enemies) to the abode of Yama (death).
युयुधे च स तेनाजौ शरैराशीविषोपमैः ।
चिच्छेद तस्य तान्बाणान्स दमश्च महामुने ॥२९॥
29. yuyudhe ca sa tenājau śarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ .
ciccheda tasya tānbāṇānsa damaśca mahāmune.
29. yuyudhe ca saḥ tena ājau śaraiḥ āśīviṣopamaiḥ |
ciccheda tasya tān bāṇān saḥ damaḥ ca mahāmune
29. And he (Damana) fought with him (Śrutakīrti) in battle using arrows that were like venomous serpents. And Damana, O great sage, cut down those arrows of his.
युयुधाते च संरब्धौ परस्परजयैषिणौ ।
परस्परशराघातविच्छिन्नधनुषौ त्वरा ॥३०॥
30. yuyudhāte ca saṃrabdhau parasparajayaiṣiṇau .
parasparaśarāghātavicchinnadhanuṣau tvarā.
30. yuyudhāte ca saṃrabdhau parasparajayaiṣiṇau
| parasparaśarāghātavicchinnadhanuṣau tvarā
30. And the two, enraged and desiring victory over each other, fought swiftly; their bows had been shattered by the impact of each other's arrows.
गृहीतखड्गावुत्तीर्य चिक्रीडाते महाबलौ ।
दमः क्षणं नृपं ध्यात्वा पितरं निहतं वने ॥३१॥
31. gṛhītakhaḍgāvuttīrya cikrīḍāte mahābalau .
damaḥ kṣaṇaṃ nṛpaṃ dhyātvā pitaraṃ nihataṃ vane.
31. gṛhītakhaḍgau uttīrya cikrīḍāte mahābalau |
damaḥ kṣaṇam nṛpam dhyātvā pitaram nihatam vane
31. Damana, having meditated (dhyāna) for a moment upon his father who was slain in the forest, then the two mighty ones, having seized their swords and sprung up, contended (or fought a duel).
केशेष्वाकृष्य चाक्रम्य निपात्य धरणीतले ।
शिरोधरायां पादेन भुजमुद्यम्य चाब्रवीत् ॥३२॥
32. keśeṣvākṛṣya cākramya nipātya dharaṇītale .
śirodharāyāṃ pādena bhujamudyamya cābravīt.
32. keśeṣu ākṛṣya ca ākramya nipātya dharaṇītale
śirodharāyāṃ pādena bhujam udyamya ca abravīt
32. Dragging him by the hair, overpowering him, and throwing him down on the ground, he then placed his foot on his neck, raised his arm, and spoke.
पश्यन्तु देवताः सर्वा मानुषाः पन्नगाः खगाः ।
पाट्यमानं च हृदयं क्षत्रबन्धोर्वपुष्मतः ॥३३॥
33. paśyantu devatāḥ sarvā mānuṣāḥ pannagāḥ khagāḥ .
pāṭyamānaṃ ca hṛdayaṃ kṣatrabandhorvapuṣmataḥ.
33. paśyantu devatāḥ sarvā mānuṣāḥ pannagāḥ khagāḥ
pāṭyamānaṃ ca hṛdayam kṣatrabandhoḥ vapuṣmataḥ
33. Let all the deities, humans, snakes, and birds witness the heart of the embodied false warrior (kṣatrabandhu) being torn apart.
एवमुक्त्वा च स दमो हदयं च व्यदारयत् ।
पातुकामश्च स सुरैः क्षतजेन निवारितः ॥३४॥
34. evamuktvā ca sa damo hadayaṃ ca vyadārayat .
pātukāmaśca sa suraiḥ kṣatajena nivāritaḥ.
34. evam uktvā ca saḥ damaḥ hṛdayam ca vyadārayat
pātukāmaḥ ca saḥ suraiḥ kṣatajena nivāritaḥ
34. Having spoken thus, Dama tore open the heart. And he, desirous of drinking the blood, was prevented by the gods from doing so.
ततश्चकार तातस्य रक्तेनैवोदकक्रियाम् ।
आनृण्यं प्राप्य स पितुः पुनः प्रायात्स्वमन्दिरम् ॥३५॥
35. tataścakāra tātasya raktenaivodakakriyām .
ānṛṇyaṃ prāpya sa pituḥ punaḥ prāyātsvamandiram.
35. tataḥ cakāra tātasya raktena eva udakakriyām
ānṛṇyam prāpya saḥ pituḥ punaḥ prāyāt svamandiram
35. Thereafter, he performed the water ritual (udakakriyā) for his father with the blood itself. Having obtained freedom from debt (ānṛṇya) to his father, he returned again to his own abode.
वपुष्मतश्च मांसेन पिण्डदानं चकार ह ।
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास रक्षः कुलसमुद्भवान् ॥३६॥
36. vapuṣmataśca māṃsena piṇḍadānaṃ cakāra ha .
brāhmaṇānbhojayāmāsa rakṣaḥ kulasamudbhavān.
36. vapuṣmataḥ ca māṃsena piṇḍadānam cakāra ha
brāhmaṇān bhojayāmāsa rakṣaḥkulasamudbhavān
36. Indeed, he performed the offering of funeral cakes (piṇḍadāna) using the flesh of an embodied being. He also fed Brahmins who were born from the lineage of the Rakshasas.
एवंविधा हि राजानो बभूवुः सूर्यवंशजाः ।
अन्येऽपि सुधियः शूरा यज्विनो धर्मकोविदाः ॥३७॥
37. evaṃvidhā hi rājāno babhūvuḥ sūryavaṃśajāḥ .
anye'pi sudhiyaḥ śūrā yajvino dharmakovidāḥ.
37. evamvidhā hi rājānaḥ babhūvuḥ sūryavaṃśajāḥ
anye api sudhiyaḥ śūrāḥ yajvinaḥ dharmakovidāḥ
37. Indeed, kings of such a nature were born in the solar dynasty. There were also others who were wise, brave, performing sacrifices, and well-versed in righteous conduct (dharma).
वेदान्तपारगास्ताञ्च न संख्यातुमिहोत्सहे ।
एतेषां चरितं श्रुत्वा नरः पापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥३८॥
38. vedāntapāragāstāñca na saṃkhyātumihotsahe .
eteṣāṃ caritaṃ śrutvā naraḥ pāpaiḥ pramucyate.
38. vedāntapāragāḥ tān ca na saṃkhyātum iha utsahe
eteṣām caritam śrutvā naraḥ pāpaiḥ pramucyate
38. And those who had mastered Vedānta, I am unable to count them here. A person, by hearing the deeds of these (great kings), is certainly released from sins.
