मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः शुश्राव तं बद्धं तनयं स करन्धमः ।
तस्य पत्नी तथा वीरा अन्ये चापि महीभृतः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ śuśrāva taṃ baddhaṃ tanayaṃ sa karandhamaḥ .
tasya patnī tathā vīrā anye cāpi mahībhṛtaḥ.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, King Karandhama heard that his son had been bound. His courageous wife and other kings also heard [the news].
तमधर्मेण तनयं बद्धं श्रुत्वा महीपतिः ।
समन्तैः पृथिवीपालैश्चिरं दध्यौ महामुने ॥२॥
2. tamadharmeṇa tanayaṃ baddhaṃ śrutvā mahīpatiḥ .
samantaiḥ pṛthivīpālaiściraṃ dadhyau mahāmune.
2. taṃ adharmeṇa tanayaṃ baddhaṃ śrutvā mahīpatiḥ
samantaiḥ pṛthivīpālaiḥ ciraṃ dadhyau mahāmune
2. O great sage (mahāmuni), having heard that his son had been imprisoned by an act of unrighteousness (adharma), the king (mahīpati) deliberated for a long time with all the surrounding rulers (pṛthivīpāla).
केचिदूचुर्महीपाला वध्याः सर्वे महीभृतः ।
यैरेकः संयुगे बद्धः समस्तैस्तैरधर्मतः ॥३॥
3. kecidūcurmahīpālā vadhyāḥ sarve mahībhṛtaḥ .
yairekaḥ saṃyuge baddhaḥ samastaistairadharmataḥ.
3. kecit ūcuḥ mahīpālāḥ vadhyāḥ sarve mahībhṛtaḥ yaiḥ
ekaḥ saṃyuge baddhaḥ samastaiḥ taiḥ adharmataḥ
3. Some kings declared, 'All those kings by whom that one (king) was collectively and unjustly, against the natural law (dharma), captured in battle should be executed.'
युज्यतां वाहिनी शीघ्रमूचुरन्ये किमास्यते ।
विशालो बध्यतां दुष्टस्तत्र येऽन्ये समागताः ॥४॥
4. yujyatāṃ vāhinī śīghramūcuranye kimāsyate .
viśālo badhyatāṃ duṣṭastatra ye'nye samāgatāḥ.
4. yujyatām vāhinī śīghram ūcuḥ anye kim āsyate
viśālaḥ badhyatām duṣṭaḥ tatra ye anye samāgatāḥ
4. Others said, 'Let the army be quickly mobilized! Why are we sitting idle? Let the wicked Viśāla be captured, along with the other kings who have assembled there.'
अन्ये तथोचुर्धर्मोऽत्र त्यक्तः पूर्वमहीक्षिता ।
अन्यायेन बलाद्येन गृहीता तमवाच्छती ॥५॥
5. anye tathocurdharmo'tra tyaktaḥ pūrvamahīkṣitā .
anyāyena balādyena gṛhītā tamavācchatī.
5. anye tathā ūcuḥ dharmaḥ atra tyaktaḥ pūrvamahīkṣitā
anyāyena balāt yena gṛhītā tam avācchatī
5. Others thus declared, 'Here, the natural law (dharma) was abandoned by a former king. (Thus,) royal fortune (śrī), which was seized by injustice and force (by an individual), desires that very one (the unjust captor) by whom she was taken.'
स्वयंवरेष्वशेषेषु तेन राजसुतास्तदा ।
खिलीकृतास्ततः सर्वे समेत्य स वशीकृतः ॥६॥
6. svayaṃvareṣvaśeṣeṣu tena rājasutāstadā .
khilīkṛtāstataḥ sarve sametya sa vaśīkṛtaḥ.
6. svayaṃvareṣu aśeṣeṣu tena rājasutāḥ tadā
khilīkṛtāḥ tataḥ sarve sametya saḥ vaśīkṛtaḥ
6. Then, at all the svayaṃvaras, all the princesses were frustrated by him. Therefore, all the kings, having come together, subdued him.
तेषामेतद्वचः श्रुत्वा वीरा वीरप्रजावती ।
वीरगोत्रसमुद्भूता वीरपत्नी प्रहर्षिता ॥७॥
7. teṣāmetadvacaḥ śrutvā vīrā vīraprajāvatī .
vīragotrasamudbhūtā vīrapatnī praharṣitā.
7. teṣām etat vacaḥ śrutvā vīrā vīraprajāvatī
vīragotrasamudbhūtā vīrapatnī praharṣitā
7. Having heard these words, the heroic woman (vīrā), who was the mother of heroic children, born from a heroic lineage, and the wife of a hero, was greatly delighted.
उवाच भर्त्तुः प्रत्यक्षमन्येषां च महीक्षिताम् ।
भद्रं कृतं भद्रभुजा मम पुत्रेण पार्थिवाः ॥८॥
8. uvāca bharttuḥ pratyakṣamanyeṣāṃ ca mahīkṣitām .
bhadraṃ kṛtaṃ bhadrabhujā mama putreṇa pārthivāḥ.
8. uvāca bharttuḥ pratyakṣam anyeṣām ca mahīkṣitām
bhadram kṛtam bhadrabhujā mama putreṇa pārthivāḥ
8. She spoke in the presence of her husband and the other kings: "O princes (pārthivāḥ), a good deed has been accomplished by my son, the one with auspicious arms!"
गृहीता यद्बलात्कन्या जित्वा सर्वमहीक्षितः ।
तदर्थं युध्यमानोऽयं बद्ध एको न धर्मतः ॥९॥
9. gṛhītā yadbalātkanyā jitvā sarvamahīkṣitaḥ .
tadarthaṃ yudhyamāno'yaṃ baddha eko na dharmataḥ.
9. gṛhītā yat balāt kanyā jitvā sarvamahīkṣitaḥ
tadartham yudhyamānaḥ ayam baddhaḥ ekaḥ na dharmataḥ
9. Because the maiden was taken by force, having defeated all the kings, he, fighting for her sake, was bound alone, and not in accordance with (natural) law (dharma).
तदप्यस्मत्सुतस्याजौ मन्ये नापचयप्रदम् ।
एतदेवहि पौरुष्यं यदमर्षवशान्नरः ॥१०॥
10. tadapyasmatsutasyājau manye nāpacayapradam .
etadevahi pauruṣyaṃ yadamarṣavaśānnaraḥ.
10. tat api asmatsutasya ājau manye na apacayapradam
etat eva hi pauruṣyam yat amarṣavaśāt naraḥ
10. Even that (his being bound) I do not consider a cause for diminution for our son in battle. For indeed, this alone is valor (pauruṣya), when a man acts under the sway of anger (amarṣa).
नीतिं न गणयत्येवं जिघांसुरिव केसरी ।
स्वयंवराय विन्यस्ता मम पुत्रेण कन्यका ॥११॥
11. nītiṃ na gaṇayatyevaṃ jighāṃsuriva kesarī .
svayaṃvarāya vinyastā mama putreṇa kanyakā.
11. nītim na gaṇayati evam jighāṃsuḥ iva kesarī
svayaṃvarāya vinyastā mama putreṇa kanyakā
11. Like a lion intent on killing, he disregards moral principles (nīti) in this manner. (Yet), my son had arranged the maiden for a self-choice marriage (svayaṃvara).
बह्व्यो गृहीता भूपानां पश्यतामतिमानिनाम् ।
क्व क्षत्रियकुले जन्म क्व याञ्चा हीनसेविता ॥१२॥
12. bahvyo gṛhītā bhūpānāṃ paśyatāmatimāninām .
kva kṣatriyakule janma kva yāñcā hīnasevitā.
12. bahvyaḥ gṛhītā bhūpānām paśyatām atimāninām
kva kṣatriyakule janma kva yāñcā hīnasevitā
12. Many [women] are taken from kings, even while they watch, (those kings who are) exceedingly proud. Where (is the honor of) being born in a warrior (kṣatriya) family, and where (is the ignominy of) begging, which is resorted to by the lowly?
बलादेव समादत्ते क्षत्रियो बलिनां पुरः ।
लोहशृंखलबद्धा वा न वशं यान्ति कातराः ॥१३॥
13. balādeva samādatte kṣatriyo balināṃ puraḥ .
lohaśṛṃkhalabaddhā vā na vaśaṃ yānti kātarāḥ.
13. balāt eva samādatte kṣatriyaḥ balinām puraḥ
lohaśṛṅkhalabaddhā vā na vaśam yānti kātarāḥ
13. A warrior (kṣatriya) seizes by force alone, even in the presence of the powerful. However, those bound by iron chains, or cowards, do not easily come under control (or submit).
प्रसह्यकारिणो यान्ति राजानो धर्मशालिनः ।
तदलं दौर्मनस्येन श्लाघ्यमेवास्य बन्धनम् ॥१४॥
14. prasahyakāriṇo yānti rājāno dharmaśālinaḥ .
tadalaṃ daurmanasyena ślāghyamevāsya bandhanam.
14. prasahyakāriṇaḥ yānti rājānaḥ dharmaśālinaḥ tat
alam daurmanasyena ślāghyam eva asya bandhanam
14. Kings who act forcefully are (also) endowed with (natural law/dharma). Therefore, enough of dejection! His capture is indeed praiseworthy.
युष्माकमपि ये पूर्वे कृत्वारीणां निपातनम् ।
हृत्वैव पृथिवीशानां पृथ्वीपुत्रादिकं वसु ॥१५॥
15. yuṣmākamapi ye pūrve kṛtvārīṇāṃ nipātanam .
hṛtvaiva pṛthivīśānāṃ pṛthvīputrādikaṃ vasu.
15. yuṣmākam api ye pūrve kṛtvā arīṇām nipātanam
hṛtvā eva pṛthivīśānām pṛthvīputrādikam vasu
15. Even your forefathers, who previously, having achieved the destruction of enemies, indeed seized the wealth, including that of Pṛthvīputra, from the kings of the earth.
भार्यावीर्यनिमित्तानि ततो यातातिगौरवम् ।
तत्त्वर्यतां रणायाशु स्यन्दनान्यधिरोहत ॥१६॥
16. bhāryāvīryanimittāni tato yātātigauravam .
tattvaryatāṃ raṇāyāśu syandanānyadhirohata.
16. bhāryāvīryanimiṛtāni tataḥ yāta atigauravam
tat tvarayatām raṇāya āśu syandanāni adhirōhatā
16. O you whose achievements are brought forth by the valor of your wives, therefore, go forth to great honor! So, quickly make haste for battle; mount the chariots!
सज्जीकुरुत नागाश्वमचिरेण ससारथिम् ।
मन्यध्वं किं महीपालैर्बहुभिः सह विग्रहम् ॥१७॥
17. sajjīkuruta nāgāśvamacireṇa sasārathim .
manyadhvaṃ kiṃ mahīpālairbahubhiḥ saha vigraham.
17. sajjīkuruta nāgāśvam acireṇa sasārathim
manyadhvam kim mahīpālaiḥ bahubhiḥ saha vigraham
17. Quickly prepare the elephants and horses with their charioteers. Why do you contemplate waging war with many kings?
प्रभूता एव तोषाय शूरस्याल्परणे क्रियाः ।
कस्य नाल्पेषु सामर्थ्यं नरेन्द्रादिषु जायते ॥१८॥
18. prabhūtā eva toṣāya śūrasyālparaṇe kriyāḥ .
kasya nālpeṣu sāmarthyaṃ narendrādiṣu jāyate.
18. prabhūtāḥ eva toṣāya śūrasya alparaṇe kriyāḥ
kasya na alpeṣu sāmarthyam narendrādiṣu jāyate
18. Indeed, for a hero, even abundant actions in a minor combat are satisfying. For whose power does not manifest itself against insignificant kings and others?
येभ्यो न विद्यते भीतिर्विक्रान्तस्यापि शत्रुषु ।
व्याप्य लोभान्समस्तान्यो ह्यभिभूय यतो नरः ॥१९॥
19. yebhyo na vidyate bhītirvikrāntasyāpi śatruṣu .
vyāpya lobhānsamastānyo hyabhibhūya yato naraḥ.
19. yebhyaḥ na vidyate bhītiḥ vikrāntasya api śatruṣu
| vyāpya lobhān samastān yaḥ hi abhibhūya naraḥ
19. Even for a valiant person, no fear arises from (such) enemies. And who, having fully encompassed and conquered all desires, is indeed a true man.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्थमुद्धर्षितो राजाऽनया पत्न्या करन्धमः ।
चकार स बलोद्योगं हन्तुं पुत्राहितान्मुने ॥२०॥
20. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
itthamuddharṣito rājā'nayā patnyā karandhamaḥ .
cakāra sa balodyogaṃ hantuṃ putrāhitānmune.
20. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | ittham uddharṣitaḥ rājā anayā patnyā
karandhamaḥ | cakāra saḥ bala udyogam hantum putra ahitān mune
20. Markandeya said: O sage, King Karandhama, thus encouraged by this wife, made military preparations to kill his son's enemies.
ततस्तस्य समं भूपैर्विशालेन च सङ्गरः ।
बभूव बद्धपुत्रस्य तैरशेषैर्महामुने ॥२१॥
21. tatastasya samaṃ bhūpairviśālena ca saṅgaraḥ .
babhūva baddhaputrasya tairaśeṣairmahāmune.
21. tataḥ tasya samam bhūpaiḥ viśālena ca saṅgaraḥ
| babhūva baddha putrasya taiḥ aśeṣaiḥ mahāmune
21. O great sage, thereafter, a battle occurred between him (Karandhama), whose son was imprisoned, and Viśāla along with all those kings.
दिनत्रयमभूद्युद्धं तेन राज्ञा समं तदा ।
करन्धमेन भूपानां विशालस्यानुकुर्वताम् ॥२२॥
22. dinatrayamabhūdyuddhaṃ tena rājñā samaṃ tadā .
karandhamena bhūpānāṃ viśālasyānukurvatām.
22. dina trayam abhūt yuddham tena rājñā samam tadā
| karandhamena bhūpānām viśālasya anukurvatām
22. Then, a battle lasting three days occurred with that King Karandhama, against the kings who were assisting Viśāla.
यदा पराजितप्रायं तत्सर्वं भूपमण्डलम् ।
तदा विशालोऽर्घ्यकरः करन्धममुपस्थितः ॥२३॥
23. yadā parājitaprāyaṃ tatsarvaṃ bhūpamaṇḍalam .
tadā viśālo'rghyakaraḥ karandhamamupasthitaḥ.
23. yadā parājitaprāyam tat sarvam bhūpamaṇḍalam
tadā viśālaḥ arghyakaraḥ karandhamam upasthitaḥ
23. When that entire realm of kings was nearly defeated, then Viśāla, bringing an offering, presented himself before Karandhama.
करन्धमोऽपि सम्प्रीत्या तेन राज्ञाभिपूजितः ।
विमुक्ते तनये तत्र निशान्तां सुखमावसत् ॥२४॥
24. karandhamo'pi samprītyā tena rājñābhipūjitaḥ .
vimukte tanaye tatra niśāntāṃ sukhamāvasat.
24. karandhamaḥ api samprītyā tena rājñā abhipūjitaḥ
vimukte tanaye tatra niśāntām sukham āvasat
24. Karandhama, also greatly honored by that king (Viśāla) with affection, remained there comfortably until dawn once his son had been released.
तां च कन्यामुपादाय विशालं समुपस्थितम् ।
अविक्षित्प्राह विप्रर्षे विवाहार्थं पितुः पुरः ॥२५॥
25. tāṃ ca kanyāmupādāya viśālaṃ samupasthitam .
avikṣitprāha viprarṣe vivāhārthaṃ pituḥ puraḥ.
25. tām ca kanyām upādāya viśālam samupasthitam
avikṣit prāha viprarṣe vivāhārtham pituḥ puraḥ
25. And Avikṣit, having taken that daughter, said to the Brahmin sage: 'Regarding Viśāla, who has arrived for the purpose of marriage, before my father - '
नाहमेतां ग्रहीष्यामि न चान्यां योषितं नृप ।
परैर्यस्या निरीक्षन्त्याः संग्रामेऽहं पराजितः ॥२६॥
26. nāhametāṃ grahīṣyāmi na cānyāṃ yoṣitaṃ nṛpa .
parairyasyā nirīkṣantyāḥ saṃgrāme'haṃ parājitaḥ.
26. na aham etām grahīṣyāmi na ca anyām yoṣitam nṛpa
paraiḥ yasyāḥ nirīkṣantyāḥ saṅgrāme aham parājitaḥ
26. O King (Viśāla), I will not accept this maiden, nor any other woman, because I was defeated in battle while she was being observed by others (enemies).
अन्यस्मै सम्प्रयच्छेमामियं चान्यं वृणोतु तम् ।
अखण्डितयशो वीर्यो यः परैर्नापमानितः ॥२७॥
27. anyasmai samprayacchemāmiyaṃ cānyaṃ vṛṇotu tam .
akhaṇḍitayaśo vīryo yaḥ parairnāpamānitaḥ.
27. anyasmai samprayacche imām iyam ca anyam vṛṇotu
tam akhaṇḍitayaśaḥ vīryaḥ yaḥ paraiḥ na apamānitaḥ
27. Let him give her to another, and let her choose a man whose fame and valor are unbroken, and who has not been disgraced by his enemies.
परैः पराजितोऽहं यत्कातरेयं यथाऽबला ।
किमत्र मानुषत्वं मे नैतस्या मम चान्तरम् ॥२८॥
28. paraiḥ parājito'haṃ yatkātareyaṃ yathā'balā .
kimatra mānuṣatvaṃ me naitasyā mama cāntaram.
28. paraiḥ parājitaḥ aham yat kātarā iyam yathā abalā
kim atra mānuṣatvam me na etasyāḥ mama ca antaram
28. Because I have been defeated by enemies, I am helpless like a weak woman. What kind of manhood (manuṣyatva) do I possess? There is no difference between her and me.
स्वतन्त्रता मनुष्याणां परतन्त्रा सदाऽबला ।
नरोऽपि परतन्त्रो यस्तस्य कीदृङ्मनुष्यता ॥२९॥
29. svatantratā manuṣyāṇāṃ paratantrā sadā'balā .
naro'pi paratantro yastasya kīdṛṅmanuṣyatā.
29. svatantratā manuṣyāṇām paratantrā sadā abalā
naraḥ api paratantraḥ yaḥ tasya kīdṛk manuṣyatā
29. Independence (svatantratā) belongs to human beings; a weak woman is always dependent. So, what kind of manhood (manuṣyatā) does a man (nara) have who is himself dependent?
सोऽहमस्या मुखं भूयो दृष्टं दर्शयिता कथम् ।
योऽहमस्याः पुरो भूमौ परैर्भूपैः खिलीकृतः ॥३०॥
30. so'hamasyā mukhaṃ bhūyo dṛṣṭaṃ darśayitā katham .
yo'hamasyāḥ puro bhūmau parairbhūpaiḥ khilīkṛtaḥ.
30. saḥ aham asyāḥ mukham bhūyaḥ dṛṣṭam darśayitā katham
yaḥ aham asyāḥ puraḥ bhūmau paraiḥ bhūpaiḥ khilīkṛtaḥ
30. How can I, having seen her face again, show my own face to her? I, who was humiliated by enemy kings before her very eyes, on the ground.
इत्युक्ते तेन तनयामुवाच जगतीपतिः ।
श्रुतं ते वचनं वत्से वदतोऽस्य महात्मनः ॥३१॥
31. ityukte tena tanayāmuvāca jagatīpatiḥ .
śrutaṃ te vacanaṃ vatse vadato'sya mahātmanaḥ.
31. iti ukte tena tanayām uvāca jagatīpatiḥ śrutam
te vacanam vatse vadataḥ asya mahātmanaḥ
31. When he had spoken thus, the lord of the earth addressed his daughter, saying: "O dear one, you have heard the words spoken by this noble soul (mahātman)."
वयं वा सम्प्रयच्छामो यस्मिंस्तस्मिंस्तवादृतिः ।
एतयोर्ह्येकमातिष्ठ मार्गयो रुचिरानने ॥३२॥
32. vayaṃ vā samprayacchāmo yasmiṃstasmiṃstavādṛtiḥ .
etayorhyekamātiṣṭha mārgayo rucirānane.
32. vayam vā samprayacchāmaḥ yasmin tasmin tava
ādṛtiḥ etayoḥ hi ekam ātiṣṭha mārgayoḥ rucirānane
32. “Or we shall give (you in marriage) to whomever you have a preference for. Indeed, O lovely-faced one, choose one of these two paths.”
कन्योवाच ॥३३॥
33. kanyovāca.
एको बहूनां युद्धाय गजानामिव केसरी ।
यत्संस्थितः परं शौर्यं तेनास्य प्रकटीकृतम् ॥३४॥
34. eko bahūnāṃ yuddhāya gajānāmiva kesarī .
yatsaṃsthitaḥ paraṃ śauryaṃ tenāsya prakaṭīkṛtam.
34. ekaḥ bahūnām yuddhāya gajānām iva kesarī yat
saṃsthitaḥ param śauryam tena asya prakaṭīkṛtam
34. He was like a single lion facing many elephants in battle. Since he stood firm, his supreme valor was demonstrated by him.
न केवलमयं तस्थौ युद्धे तेप्यखिला जिताः ।
बहुशोऽनेन यत्नेन विक्रमोऽपि प्रकाशितः ॥३५॥
35. na kevalamayaṃ tasthau yuddhe tepyakhilā jitāḥ .
bahuśo'nena yatnena vikramo'pi prakāśitaḥ.
35. na kevalam ayam tasthau yuddhe te api akhilāḥ
jitāḥ bahuśaḥ anena yatnena vikramaḥ api prakāśitaḥ
35. He not only stood firm in battle, but he also conquered all of them. His valor was repeatedly displayed through his efforts.
शौर्यविक्रमसंयुक्तमिमं सर्वमहीक्षितः ।
धर्मयुद्धमधर्मेण जितवन्तोऽत्र का त्रपा ॥३६॥
36. śauryavikramasaṃyuktamimaṃ sarvamahīkṣitaḥ .
dharmayuddhamadharmeṇa jitavanto'tra kā trapā.
36. śaurya-vikrama-saṃyuktam imam sarva-mahīkṣitaḥ
dharma-yuddham adharmeṇa jitavantaḥ atra kā trapā
36. All the kings conquered this hero, who possessed great bravery and valor, in a battle of natural law (dharma) by unrighteous means (adharma). For him, what shame is there in this?
न चापि रूपमात्रेऽहं लोभमस्य गता पितः ।
शौर्यविक्रमधैर्याणि हरन्त्यस्य मनो मम ॥३७॥
37. na cāpi rūpamātre'haṃ lobhamasya gatā pitaḥ .
śauryavikramadhairyāṇi harantyasya mano mama.
37. na ca api rūpa-mātre aham lobham asya gatā pitaḥ
śaurya-vikrama-dhairyāṇi haranti asya manaḥ mama
37. O father, I am not merely attracted to his physical form. His heroism, valor, and steadfastness captivate my mind.
तत्किमुक्तेन बहुना याच्यतां मत्कृते नृपः ।
त्वया महानुभावोऽयं नान्यो मे भविता पतिः ॥३८॥
38. tatkimuktena bahunā yācyatāṃ matkṛte nṛpaḥ .
tvayā mahānubhāvo'yaṃ nānyo me bhavitā patiḥ.
38. tat kim uktena bahunā yācyatām mat-kṛte nṛpaḥ
tvayā mahānubhāvaḥ ayam na anyaḥ me bhavitā patiḥ
38. Therefore, what is the use of speaking at length? Let the king be requested on my behalf. This noble person, and no other, will be my husband.
विशाल उवाच ।
राजपुत्रसुता प्राह ममैतच्छोभनं वचः ।
एवं चैव त्वया तुल्यः कुमारो न महीतले ॥३९॥
39. viśāla uvāca .
rājaputrasutā prāha mamaitacchobhanaṃ vacaḥ .
evaṃ caiva tvayā tulyaḥ kumāro na mahītale.
39. viśālaḥ uvāca rājaputrasutā prāha mama etat śobhanam
vacaḥ evam ca eva tvayā tulyaḥ kumāraḥ na mahītale
39. Viśāla said: The princess (daughter of the prince) said, "This excellent statement of yours is agreeable to me. Indeed, there is no prince on earth equal to you."
अविसंवादिते शौर्यमतीव च पराक्रमः ।
पावयास्मत्कुलं वीर दुहितुर्मे परिग्रहात् ॥४०॥
40. avisaṃvādite śauryamatīva ca parākramaḥ .
pāvayāsmatkulaṃ vīra duhiturme parigrahāt.
40. avisaṃvādite śauryam atīva ca parākramaḥ
pāvaya asmatkulam vīra duhituḥ me parigrahāt
40. In you (Viśāla), there is undisputed valor and exceeding prowess. O hero, purify our family by accepting my daughter (in marriage).
राजपुत्र उवाच ।
नाहमेतां ग्रहाष्यामि न चान्यां योषितं नृप ।
आत्मन्येव हि मे बुद्धिः स्त्रीमयी मनुजेश्वर ॥४१॥
41. rājaputra uvāca .
nāhametāṃ grahāṣyāmi na cānyāṃ yoṣitaṃ nṛpa .
ātmanyeva hi me buddhiḥ strīmayī manujeśvara.
41. rājaputraḥ uvāca na aham etām grahīṣyāmi na ca anyām
yoṣitam nṛpa ātmani eva hi me buddhiḥ strīmayī manujeśvara
41. The prince said: "O king, I will not accept this woman, nor any other woman. For my intellect (buddhi) is indeed fixed solely on the (inner) Self (ātman), O lord of men, and it is of a contemplative, feminine nature."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः करन्धमः प्राह पुत्रेयं गृह्यतां त्वया ।
विशालतनया सुभ्रूस्त्वयि हार्दवती दृढम् ॥४२॥
42. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ karandhamaḥ prāha putreyaṃ gṛhyatāṃ tvayā .
viśālatanayā subhrūstvayi hārdavatī dṛḍham.
42. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ karandhamaḥ prāha putra iyam
gṛhyatām tvayā viśālatanayā subhrūḥ tvayi hārdavatī dṛḍham
42. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then Karandhama said, "O son, let this daughter of Viśāla, the beautiful-browed one, be accepted by you. She is indeed deeply affectionate towards you."
राजपुत्र उवाच ।
नाज्ञाभङ्गः कदाचित्ते कृतः पूर्वं मया प्रभो ।
तथाऽऽज्ञापय मां तात यथाज्ञां करवाणि ते ॥४३॥
43. rājaputra uvāca .
nājñābhaṅgaḥ kadācitte kṛtaḥ pūrvaṃ mayā prabho .
tathā''jñāpaya māṃ tāta yathājñāṃ karavāṇi te.
43. rājaputraḥ uvāca | na ājñābhaṅgaḥ kadācit te kṛtaḥ pūrvam
mayā prabho | tathā ājñāpaya mām tāta yathā ājñām karavāṇi te
43. The prince said, "O Lord, I have never before violated any of your commands. Therefore, Father, please instruct me so that I may carry out your orders."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
अत्यन्तनिश्चितमतौ तस्मिन्राजसुते सुताम् ।
तामुवाच विशालोऽपि व्याकुलीकृतमानसः ॥४४॥
44. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
atyantaniścitamatau tasminrājasute sutām .
tāmuvāca viśālo'pi vyākulīkṛtamānasaḥ.
44. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | atyantanirścitamatau tasmin rājasute
sutām | tām uvāca viśālaḥ api vyākulīkṛtamānasaḥ
44. Mārkaṇḍeya said, "When that prince had expressed his extremely firm resolve, Viśāla, whose mind was greatly agitated, spoke to his daughter."
निवर्त्यतां मनः पुत्रि एतस्माच्च प्रयोजनात् ।
अन्यं वरय भर्त्तारं सन्त्यनेके नृपात्मजाः ॥४५॥
45. nivartyatāṃ manaḥ putri etasmācca prayojanāt .
anyaṃ varaya bharttāraṃ santyaneke nṛpātmajāḥ.
45. nivartyatām manaḥ putri etasmāt ca prayojanāt |
anyam varaya bharttāram santi aneke nṛpātmajāḥ
45. "O daughter, turn your mind away from this purpose. Choose another husband, for there are many other sons of kings."
कन्योवाच ।
वरं वृणोम्यहं तात मामेष यदि नेच्छति ।
तपसाऽन्यो न मे भर्त्ता जन्मन्यस्मिन्भविष्यति ॥४६॥
46. kanyovāca .
varaṃ vṛṇomyahaṃ tāta māmeṣa yadi necchati .
tapasā'nyo na me bharttā janmanyasminbhaviṣyati.
46. kanyā uvāca | varam vṛṇomi aham tāta mām eṣa yadi na icchati
| tapasā anyaḥ na me bharttā janmani asmin bhaviṣyati
46. The maiden said, "O Father, I ask for a boon: if he (the prince) does not desire me, then by spiritual austerity (tapas) no other husband shall be mine in this life."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः करन्धमो राजा विशालेन समं मुदा ।
स्थित्वा दिनत्रयं तत्र निजमभ्याययौ पुरम् ॥४७॥
47. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
tataḥ karandhamo rājā viśālena samaṃ mudā .
sthitvā dinatrayaṃ tatra nijamabhyāyayau puram.
47. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ karandhamaḥ rājā viśālena samam
mudā sthitvā dinatrayam tatra nijam abhyāyayau puram
47. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then King Karandhama, accompanied by Viśāla, joyfully stayed there for three days, and afterwards returned to his own capital.
अविक्षितोपि तेनैव पित्रान्यैश्च नराधिपैः ।
निदर्शनैः पुरावृत्तैः सान्त्वितोऽभ्यागमत्पुरम् ॥४८॥
48. avikṣitopi tenaiva pitrānyaiśca narādhipaiḥ .
nidarśanaiḥ purāvṛttaiḥ sāntvito'bhyāgamatpuram.
48. avikṣitaḥ api tena eva pitrā anyaiḥ ca narādhipaiḥ
nidarśanaiḥ purāvṛttaiḥ sāntvitaḥ abhyāgamat puram
48. Avikṣita, too, being consoled by his own father and other kings with examples from ancient stories, returned to the city.
सापि कन्या वनं गत्वा निसृष्टा निजबान्धवैः ।
तपस्तेपे निराहारा वैराग्यं परमास्थिता ॥४९॥
49. sāpi kanyā vanaṃ gatvā nisṛṣṭā nijabāndhavaiḥ .
tapastepe nirāhārā vairāgyaṃ paramāsthitā.
49. sā api kanyā vanam gatvā nisṛṣṭā nijabāndhavaiḥ
tapaḥ tepe nirāhārā vairāgyam paramāsthitā
49. That maiden, too, having been abandoned by her own relatives, went to the forest. There, completely detached and without food, she performed severe penance (tapas).
निराहारा यदा सा तु मासत्रयमवस्थिता ।
सम्प्राप परमामार्त्तिं कृशाधमनिसन्तता ॥५०॥
50. nirāhārā yadā sā tu māsatrayamavasthitā .
samprāpa paramāmārttiṃ kṛśādhamanisantatā.
50. nirāhārā yadā sā tu māsatrayam avasthitā
samprāpa paramām ārttim kṛśādhamanisantatā
50. When she had remained without food for three months, she reached a state of extreme distress, her body covered with prominent, emaciated veins.
मन्दोत्साहातितन्वङ्गी मुमूर्षुरपि बालिका ।
देहत्यागाय सा चक्रे तदा बुद्धिं नृपात्मजा ॥५१॥
51. mandotsāhātitanvaṅgī mumūrṣurapi bālikā .
dehatyāgāya sā cakre tadā buddhiṃ nṛpātmajā.
51. mandotsāhātitanvaṅgī mumūrṣuḥ api bālikā
dehatyāgāya sā cakre tadā buddhim nṛpātmajā
51. Then, the king's daughter, whose enthusiasm had waned and whose body was exceedingly slender, decided to end her life, even though she was already desiring to die.
आत्मत्यागाय तां ज्ञात्वा कृतबुद्धिं सुरास्ततः ।
समेत्य प्रेषयामासुर्देवदूतं तदन्तिकम् ॥५२॥
52. ātmatyāgāya tāṃ jñātvā kṛtabuddhiṃ surāstataḥ .
sametya preṣayāmāsurdevadūtaṃ tadantikam.
52. ātmatyāgāya tām jñātvā kṛtabuddhim surāḥ tataḥ
sametya preṣayāmāsuḥ devadūtam tadantikam
52. Knowing that she had made up her mind to commit suicide, the gods then assembled and sent a divine messenger to her.
समुपेत्य स तां प्राह दूतोऽहं पार्थिवात्मजे ।
प्रेषितस्त्रिदशैस्तुभ्यं यत्कार्यं तन्निशामय ॥५३॥
53. samupetya sa tāṃ prāha dūto'haṃ pārthivātmaje .
preṣitastridaśaistubhyaṃ yatkāryaṃ tanniśāmaya.
53. samupetya saḥ tām prāha dūtaḥ aham pārthivātmaje
preṣitaḥ tridaśaiḥ tubhyam yat kāryam tat niśāmaya
53. Approaching her, he said, 'O princess, I am a messenger sent to you by the gods. Listen to what is to be conveyed (the task).'
न भवत्या परित्याज्यं शरीरमतिदुर्लभम् ।
त्वं भविष्यसि कल्याणि जननी चक्रवर्तिनः ॥५४॥
54. na bhavatyā parityājyaṃ śarīramatidurlabham .
tvaṃ bhaviṣyasi kalyāṇi jananī cakravartinaḥ.
54. na bhavatyā parityājyam śarīram atidurlabham
tvam bhaviṣyasi kalyāṇi jananī cakravartinaḥ
54. This body, which is exceedingly difficult to obtain, should not be abandoned by you, O blessed one! You will become the mother of a universal ruler (cakravartin).
पुत्रेण च महाभागे भोक्तव्यानि हतारिणा ।
अव्याहताज्ञेन चिरं सप्तद्वीपवती मही ॥५५॥
55. putreṇa ca mahābhāge bhoktavyāni hatāriṇā .
avyāhatājñena ciraṃ saptadvīpavatī mahī.
55. putreṇa ca mahābhāge bhoktavyāni hatāriṇā
avyāhatājñena ciram saptadvīpavatī mahī
55. Oh blessed one, the son, who has vanquished his enemies and whose command is unopposed, shall rule over the earth, possessing seven continents, for a long time.
हन्तव्यस्तेन तरुजिद्देवानां पुरतो रिपुः ।
अयःशंकुस्तथा क्रूरो धर्मे स्थाप्यास्ततः प्रजाः ॥५६॥
56. hantavyastena tarujiddevānāṃ purato ripuḥ .
ayaḥśaṃkustathā krūro dharme sthāpyāstataḥ prajāḥ.
56. hantavyaḥ tena tarujit devānām purataḥ ripuḥ
ayaḥśaṅkuḥ tathā krūraḥ dharme sthāpyāḥ tataḥ prajāḥ
56. That cruel enemy, Tarujit, Ayahshanku, is to be slain by him in the presence of the gods. Thereafter, the people (prajā) are to be established in their natural law (dharma).
परिपालनीयमखिलं चातुर्वर्ण्यं स्वधर्मतः ।
हन्तव्या दस्यवो म्लेच्छा ये चान्ये दुष्टचेष्टिताः ॥५७॥
57. paripālanīyamakhilaṃ cāturvarṇyaṃ svadharmataḥ .
hantavyā dasyavo mlecchā ye cānye duṣṭaceṣṭitāḥ.
57. paripālanīyam akhilam cāturvarṇyam svadharmataḥ
hantavyāḥ dasyavaḥ mlecchāḥ ye ca anye duṣṭaceṣṭitāḥ
57. The entire four-fold social order (cāturvarṇya) must be protected according to its own natural law (dharma). Moreover, robbers, barbarians (mleccha), and all others whose actions are wicked are to be slain.
यष्टव्यं विविधैर्यज्ञैः समाप्तवरदक्षिणैः ।
वाजिमेधादिभिर्भद्रे षट्सहस्रैश्च संख्यया ॥५८॥
58. yaṣṭavyaṃ vividhairyajñaiḥ samāptavaradakṣiṇaiḥ .
vājimedhādibhirbhadre ṣaṭsahasraiśca saṃkhyayā.
58. yaṣṭavyam vividhaiḥ yajñaiḥ samāptavaradakṣiṇaiḥ
vājimedhādibhiḥ bhadre ṣaṭsahasraiḥ ca saṅkhyayā
58. Oh auspicious one, one should perform various sacrificial rituals (yajña), including those like the horse sacrifice (vājimedha), where the best sacrificial fees (dakṣiṇā) have been fully offered, amounting to six thousand in number.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तं दृष्ट्वा साऽन्तरिक्षस्थं दिव्यस्रगनुलेपनम् ।
देवदूतमुवाचेदं राजपुत्री ततो मृदु ॥५९॥
59. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
taṃ dṛṣṭvā sā'ntarikṣasthaṃ divyasraganulepanam .
devadūtamuvācedaṃ rājaputrī tato mṛdu.
59. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tam dṛṣṭvā sā antarikṣastham
divyasraganulepanam devadūtam uvāca idam rājaputrī tataḥ mṛdu
59. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, the princess, having seen him (the celestial messenger) who was in the sky and adorned with divine garlands and unguents, softly said this to him.
सत्यं त्वमागतः स्वर्गाद्देवदूतो न संशयः ।
किन्तु भर्त्रा विना पुत्रः स कथं मे भविष्यति ॥६०॥
60. satyaṃ tvamāgataḥ svargāddevadūto na saṃśayaḥ .
kintu bhartrā vinā putraḥ sa kathaṃ me bhaviṣyati.
60. satyam tvam āgataḥ svargāt devadūtaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
kintu bhartrā vinā putraḥ saḥ katham me bhaviṣyati
60. Truly, you have come from heaven, O celestial messenger; there is no doubt about that. But without a husband, how will a son be possible for me?
अविक्षितमृते भर्त्ता मम नान्योऽत्र जन्मनि ।
भवितेति प्रतिज्ञातं मयैतत्सन्निधौ पितुः ॥६१॥
61. avikṣitamṛte bharttā mama nānyo'tra janmani .
bhaviteti pratijñātaṃ mayaitatsannidhau pituḥ.
61. avikṣitam ṛte bhartā mama na anyaḥ atra janmani
bhavitā iti pratijñātam mayā etat sannidhau pituḥ
61. No other man will be my husband in this life (janman) except Avikṣit – this I vowed in the presence of my father.
स च नेच्छति मां प्रोक्तो मत्पित्रा जनकेन च ।
करन्धमेनाथ सम्यग्याचितश्च मया तथा ॥६२॥
62. sa ca necchati māṃ prokto matpitrā janakena ca .
karandhamenātha samyagyācitaśca mayā tathā.
62. saḥ ca na icchati mām proktaḥ matpitrā janakena
ca karandhamena atha samyak yācitaḥ ca mayā tathā
62. And he (Avikṣit) does not desire me, even though he was properly requested by my father Janaka and also by King Karandhama, and similarly requested by me.
देवदूत उवाच ।
किमनेन महाभागे बहुनोक्तेन ते सुतः ।
समुत्पत्स्यति मा त्याक्षीस्त्वमात्मानमधर्मतः ॥६३॥
63. devadūta uvāca .
kimanena mahābhāge bahunoktena te sutaḥ .
samutpatsyati mā tyākṣīstvamātmānamadharmataḥ.
63. devadūtaḥ uvāca | kim anena mahābhāge bahunā uktena te
sutaḥ | samutpatsyati mā tyākṣīḥ tvam ātmānam adharmataḥ
63. The divine messenger said: "O fortunate lady, what is the use of speaking so much with this? Your son will be born. Do not abandon yourself (ātman) due to unrighteousness (adharma)."
अत्रैव कानने तिष्ठ तनुं क्षीणां च पोषय ।
तपःप्रभावादेतत्ते सर्वं साधु भविष्यति ॥६४॥
64. atraiva kānane tiṣṭha tanuṃ kṣīṇāṃ ca poṣaya .
tapaḥprabhāvādetatte sarvaṃ sādhu bhaviṣyati.
64. atra eva kānane tiṣṭha tanum kṣīṇām ca poṣaya |
tapaḥ prabhāvāt etat te sarvam sādhu bhaviṣyati
64. Remain right here in this forest. Nourish your weak body. By the power of your austerity (tapas), all this will turn out well for you.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा देवदूतोऽसौ यथागतमगच्छत ।
चकारानुदिनं सुभ्रूः साप्यात्मतनुपोषणम् ॥६५॥
65. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
ityuktvā devadūto'sau yathāgatamagacchata .
cakārānudinaṃ subhrūḥ sāpyātmatanupoṣaṇam.
65. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | iti uktvā devadūtaḥ asau yathāgatam
agacchat | cakāra anudinam subhrūḥ sā api ātmatanupoṣaṇam
65. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Having spoken thus, that divine messenger departed as he had come. And she, the beautiful-browed one, also undertook the nourishment of her own body (ātmatanu) daily."
