क्रौष्टुकिरुवाच ।
कथितं भवता सम्यग् यत् पृष्टोऽसि महामुने ।
भूसमुद्रादिसंस्थानं प्रमाणानि तथा ग्रहाः ॥१॥

1. krauṣṭukiruvāca .
kathitaṃ bhavatā samyag yat pṛṣṭo'si mahāmune .
bhūsamudrādisaṃsthānaṃ pramāṇāni tathā grahāḥ.

Krauṣṭuki said: "O great sage, you have thoroughly explained what I asked you: the arrangement of the earth, oceans, and similar entities, their dimensions, and the planets."
तेषाञ्चैव प्रमाणञ्च नक्षत्राणाञ्च संस्थितिः ।
भूरादयस्तथा लोकाः पातालान्यखिलान्यपि ॥२॥

2. teṣāñcaiva pramāṇañca nakṣatrāṇāñca saṃsthitiḥ .

And indeed, their dimensions, and the arrangement of the constellations, and similarly, the Bhūḥ (earth) and other worlds, as well as all the netherworlds (pātālas).
स्वायम्भुवं तथा ख्यातं मुने मन्वन्तरं मम ।
तदन्तराण्यहं श्रोतुमिच्छे मन्वन्तराणि वै ।
मन्वन्तराधिपान् देवानृषींस्तत्तनयान्नृपान् ॥३॥
तदन्तराण्यहं श्रोतुमिच्छे मन्वन्तराणि वै ।

3. svāyambhuvaṃ tathā khyātaṃ mune manvantaraṃ mama .

manvantaram mama tat antarāṇi aham śrotum

O sage, the Svāyambhuva manvantara is indeed known to me. I now wish to hear about the subsequent manvantaras, including their presiding deities (devāḥ), sages (ṛṣiḥ), the sons of those sages, and the kings.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
मन्वन्तरं मयाख्यातं तव स्वायम्भुवं च यत् ।
स्वारोचिषाख्यमन्यत् तु शृणु तस्मादनन्तरम् ॥४॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: "I have narrated to you the Svāyambhuva Manvantara. Now, hear about the one called Svārociṣa, which follows immediately after that."
कश्चिद् द्विजातिप्रवरः पुरेऽभूदरुणास्पदे ।
वरुणायास्तटे विप्रो रूपेणात्यश्विनावपि ॥५॥

5. kaścid dvijātipravaraḥ pure'bhūdaruṇāspade .

In the city of Aruṇāspada, on the bank of the Varuṇā river, there was a certain excellent brāhmaṇa (dvijāti), who in beauty surpassed even the two Aśvins.
मृदुस्वभावः सद्वृत्तो वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।
सदातिथिप्रियो रात्रावागतानां समाश्रयः ॥६॥

6. mṛdusvabhāvaḥ sadvṛtto vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ .
sadātithipriyo rātrāvāgatānāṃ samāśrayaḥ.

He possessed a gentle nature and good conduct, having mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas. He was always hospitable to guests and provided shelter for those who arrived at night.
तस्य बुद्धिरियं त्वासीदहं पश्ये वसुन्धराम् ।
अतिरम्यवनोद्यानां नानानगरशोभिताम् ॥७॥

7. tasya buddhiriyaṃ tvāsīdahaṃ paśye vasundharām .

His intention (buddhi) was this: "I should see the earth, which is adorned with exceedingly beautiful forests and gardens, and graced by many different cities."
अथागतो।
ञतिथिः कश्चित् कदाचित्तस्य वेश्मनि ।
नानौषधिप्रभावज्ञो मन्त्रविद्याविशारदः ॥८॥

8. athāgato.
ñatithiḥ kaścit kadācittasya veśmani .

Then, at some point, a certain guest came to his house, one who was knowledgeable about the effects of various medicines and skilled in the science of sacred incantations (mantra-vidyā).
अभ्यर्थितस्तु तेनासौ श्रद्धापूतेन चेतसा ।
तस्याचख्यौ स देशांश्च रम्याणि नगराणि च ॥९॥
तस्याचख्यौ स देशांश्च रम्याणि नगराणि च ॥९॥
9. abhyarthitastu tenāsau śraddhāpūtena cetasā .
tasyācakhyau sa deśāṃśca ramyāṇi nagarāṇi ca.

Indeed, being requested by him (the host) with a mind purified by faith (śraddhā), that guest (asau) recounted to him (the host) the beautiful countries and cities.
वनानि नद्यः शैलांश्च पुण्यान्यायतनानि च ।
स ततो विस्मयाविष्टः प्राह तं द्विजसत्तमम् ॥१०॥

10. vanāni nadyaḥ śailāṃśca puṇyānyāyatanāni ca .
sa tato vismayāviṣṭaḥ prāha taṃ dvijasattamam.

He also recounted forests, rivers, mountains, and sacred shrines. Thereupon, he (the host), filled with wonder, said to that excellent brahmin (dvijasattama).
अनेकदेशदर्शित्वेनातिश्रमसमन्वितः ।
त्वं नातिवृद्धो वयसा नातिवृत्तश्च यौवनात् ।
कथमल्पेन कालेन पृथिवीमटसि द्विज ॥११॥
त्वं नातिवृद्धो वयसा नातिवृत्तश्च यौवनात् ।

11. anekadeśadarśitvenātiśramasamanvitaḥ .

11.
Being one who has seen many countries, you must be extremely tired. Yet, you are neither very old nor have you completely passed your youth. How is it then, O brahmin (dvija), that you roam the earth in such a short period of time?
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
मन्त्रौषधिप्रभावेण विप्राप्रतिहता गतिः ।
योजनानां सहस्रं हि दिनार्धेन व्रजाम्यम् ॥१२॥
मन्त्रौषधिप्रभावेण विप्राप्रतिहता गतिः ।
योजनानां सहस्रं हि दिनार्धेन व्रजाम्यम् ॥१२॥
12. brāhmaṇa uvāca .
mantrauṣadhiprabhāveṇa viprāpratihatā gatiḥ .
yojanānāṃ sahasraṃ hi dinārdhena vrajāmyam.

brāhmaṇa uvāca mantrauṣadhiprabhāveṇa viprāpratihatā
gatiḥ yojanānām sahasram hi dinārdhena vrajāmi aham

The brahmin said, "By the power of sacred incantations (mantra) and medicinal herbs (auṣadhi), my movement is unobstructed, as is fitting for a brahmin. Indeed, I can travel a thousand yojanas in half a day."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततः स विप्रस्तं भूयः प्रत्युवाचेदमादरात् ।
श्रद्धधानो वचस्तस्य ब्राह्मणस्य विपश्चितः ॥१३॥

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca tataḥ saḥ vipraḥ tam bhūyaḥ pratyuvāca
idam ādarāt śraddadhānaḥ vacaḥ tasya brāhmaṇasya vipaścitaḥ

13.
Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then that brahmin replied to him again with this, respectfully, having faith (śraddhā) in the words of that wise brahmin.
मम प्रसादं भगवन् कुरु मन्त्रप्रभावजम् ।
द्रष्टुमेतां मम महीमतीवेच्छा प्रवर्तते ॥१४॥

14. mama prasādaṃ bhagavan kuru mantraprabhāvajam .

O revered one (bhagavan), please bestow upon me your grace (prasāda), which is born of the power of sacred incantations (mantra). An exceedingly great desire has arisen in me to see this earth of mine.
प्रादात् स ब्राह्मणश्चास्मै पादलेपमुदारधीः ।
अभिमन्त्रयामास दिशं तेनाख्याताञ्च यत्नतः ॥१५॥

15. prādāt sa brāhmaṇaścāsmai pādalepamudāradhīḥ .

prādāt saḥ brāhmaṇaḥ ca asmai pādalepam udāradhīḥ

And that noble-minded brahmin gave him a foot-ointment. He also diligently consecrated with a sacred incantation (mantra) the direction indicated by him.
तेनानुलिप्तपादोऽथ स द्विजो द्विजसत्तम ।
हिमवन्तमगाद् द्रष्टुं नानाप्रस्त्रवणान्वितम् ॥१६॥

16. tenānuliptapādo'tha sa dvijo dvijasattama .
himavantamagād draṣṭuṃ nānāprastravaṇānvitam.

16.
O best of brahmins, that brahmin, whose feet were then anointed by that (medicine), went to the Himalayas to see its many springs and waterfalls.
सहस्रं योजनानां हि दिनार्धेन व्रजामि यत् ।
आयास्यामीति सञ्चिन्त्य तदर्धेनापरेण हि ॥१७॥

17. sahasraṃ yojanānāṃ hi dinārdhena vrajāmi yat .

Having pondered, 'Since I certainly travel a thousand yojanas in half a day, I will surely return in another half of that time,' (he set out).
सम्प्राप्तो हिमवत्पृष्ठं नातिश्रान्ततनुर्द्विज ।
विचचार ततस्तत्र तुहिनाचलभूतले ॥१८॥

18. samprāpto himavatpṛṣṭhaṃ nātiśrāntatanurdvija .

O brahmin, having reached the peaks of the Himalayas, his body not excessively tired, he then roamed there on the snowy mountain's ground.
पादाक्रान्तेन तस्याथ तुहिनेन विलीयता ।
प्रक्षालितः पादलेपः परमौषधिसम्भः ॥१९॥

19. pādākrāntena tasyātha tuhinena vilīyatā .

Then, by the melting snow trodden by his feet, the ointment on his feet, which had its origin in a supreme medicine, was washed away.
ततो जडगतिः सोऽथ इतश्चेतश्च पर्यटन् ।
ददर्शातिमनोज्ञानि सानूनि हिमभूभृतः ॥२०॥

20. tato jaḍagatiḥ so'tha itaścetaśca paryaṭan .
dadarśātimanojñāni sānūni himabhūbhṛtaḥ.

tataḥ jaḍagatiḥ saḥ atha itaḥ ca cetaḥ ca paryaṭan

Then, with a slow gait, he wandered here and there, and beheld the exceedingly charming peaks of the Himalayas.
सिद्धगन्धर्वजुष्टानि किन्नराभिरतानि च ।
क्रीडाविहाररम्याणि देवादीनामितस्ततः ॥२१॥

21. siddhagandharvajuṣṭāni kinnarābhiratāni ca .
krīḍāvihāraramyāṇi devādīnāmitastataḥ.

These peaks were frequented by Siddhas and Gandharvas, delighted in by Kinnaras, and charming for the sports and recreation of gods and other divine beings here and there.
दिव्याप्सरोगणशतैराकीर्णान्यवलोकयन् ।
नातृप्यत द्विजश्रेष्ठः प्रोद्भूतपुलको मुने ॥२२॥

22. divyāpsarogaṇaśatairākīrṇānyavalokayan .
nātṛpyata dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ prodbhūtapulako mune.

divyāpsarogaṇaśataiḥ ākīrṇāni avalōkayan na

O sage, as he beheld those peaks, teeming with hundreds of groups of divine Apsaras, the best of the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭha), with his hairs standing on end in thrill, was not satisfied.
क्वचित् प्रस्त्रवणाद् भ्रष्टजलपातमनोरमम् ।
प्रनृत्यच्छिखिकेकाभिरन्यतश्च निनादितम् ॥२३॥

23. kvacit prastravaṇād bhraṣṭajalapātamanoramam .

In some places, the peaks were charming with water falling from springs, and in others, they resonated with the calls of dancing peacocks.
दात्यूहकोयष्टिकाद्यैः क्वचिच्चातिमनोहरैः ।
पुंस्कोकिलकलालापैः श्रुतिहारिभिरन्वितम् ॥२४॥

24. dātyūhakoyaṣṭikādyaiḥ kvaciccātimanoharaiḥ .
puṃskokilakalālāpaiḥ śrutihāribhiranvitam.

dātyūhakoṣṭikā ādyaiḥ kvacit ca ati-manoharaiḥ

Here and there, it was adorned with the highly charming sounds of francolin partridges, junglefowl, and other birds, and accompanied by the melodious, ear-captivating calls of male cuckoos.
प्रफुल्लतरुगन्धेन वासितानिलवीजितम् ।
मुदा युक्तः स ददृशे हिमवन्तं महागिरिम् ॥२५॥

25. praphullatarugandhena vāsitānilavījitam .

He joyfully beheld the great mountain (Himavat), which was fanned by winds fragrant with the scent of blooming trees.

Having seen this great mountain (Himavat), the Brahmin's son, thinking to himself, 'I will see it tomorrow,' then set his mind (mati) on returning home.

चिन्तयामास किमिदं मयाज्ञानादनुष्ठितम् ॥२७॥

Then, as his foot-ointment had worn off, and his movements became stiff after a long time, he pondered, 'What is this that I have done out of ignorance?'

My plaster has been lost, dissolved by snow water. This mountain is exceedingly difficult to traverse, and I have come a long way to get here.

I will have to abandon my ritualistic actions (karma), such as the service to the sacred fire and other rites. How will I perform them here? A great difficulty has arisen.

शक्तदृष्टिरहं तृप्तिं न यास्येऽब्दशतैरपि ॥३०॥

On this splendid mountain, constantly thinking 'this is beautiful, this is beautiful,' I, with my gaze entranced, will not attain satisfaction even for hundreds of years.
किन्नराणां कलालापाः समन्ताच्छ्रोत्रहारिणः ।
प्रफुल्लतरुगन्धांश्च घ्राणमत्यन्तमृच्छति ॥३१॥

The melodious voices of the Kinnaras, charming to the ear, resound from all directions. And the nose exceedingly experiences the fragrances of blooming trees.

हरन्ति प्रसभं चेतो मनोज्ञानि सरांसि च ॥३२॥

The pleasant-touching wind, juicy fruits, and charming lakes forcibly captivate the mind.
एवं गते तु पश्येयं यदि कञ्चित् तपोनिधिम् ।
स ममोपदिशेन्मार्गं गमनाय गृहं प्रति ॥३३॥

If, in this situation, I could see some ascetic (tapas), he would instruct me on the path to return home.

Markandeya said: Thus contemplating, the Brahmin wandered in the Himalayas. Having lost the strength in his feet and the efficacy of his medicinal herbs, he became extremely distraught.
तं ददर्श भ्रमन्तञ्च मुनिश्रेष्ठं वरूथिनी ।
वराप्सरा महाभागा मौलेया रूपशालिनी ॥३५॥

Varuthini, who was the foremost Apsara, highly fortunate, of the Mauleya family, and endowed with great beauty, saw him - the wandering, best of sages.

मदनाकृष्टहृदया सानुरागा हि तत्क्षणात् ॥३६॥

When that best among Brahmins was seen, the multitude of women immediately became filled with affection, their hearts captivated by the god of love.

They thought, "Who is this person of such exquisite form? My life would be fulfilled if he does not disregard me."
अहोऽस्य रूपमाधुर्यमहोऽस्य ललिता गतिः ।
अहो गम्भीरता दृष्टेः कुतोऽस्य सदृशो भुवि ॥३८॥

Oh, the exquisite beauty of his form! Oh, his graceful movement! Oh, the profound depth of his gaze! Where on earth could his equal be found?
दृष्टा देवास्तथा दैत्याः सिद्धगन्धर्वपन्नगाः ।
कथमेकोऽपि नास्त्यस्य तुल्यरूपो महात्मनः ॥३९॥

39. dṛṣṭā devāstathā daityāḥ siddhagandharvapannagāḥ .

Gods, demons, Siddhas, Gandharvas, and Pannagas have all been observed. Yet, how is it that not even one among them possesses a form equal to that of this great soul (mahātman)?
यथाहमस्मिन्मय्येष सानुरागस्तथा यदि ।
भवेदत्र मया कार्यस्तत्कृतः पुण्यसञ्चयः ॥४०॥

Just as I am devoted to him, if he were to show the same affection towards me, then I would consider that a great accumulation of spiritual merit (puṇyasañcaya) had been achieved by me through that.
यद्येष मयि सुस्त्रिग्धां दृष्टिमद्य निपातयेत् ।
कृतपुण्या न मत्तोऽन्या त्रैलोक्ये वनिता ततः ॥४१॥

41. yadyeṣa mayi sustrigdhāṃ dṛṣṭimadya nipātayet .

If he were to cast a very affectionate glance upon me today, then no other woman (vanitā) in the three worlds (trailokye) would be as blessed (kṛtapuṇyā) as I.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवं सञ्चिन्तयन्ती सा दिव्ययोषित् स्मरातुरा ।
आत्मानं दर्शयामास कमनीयतराकृतिम् ॥४२॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Thus contemplating, that divine woman, tormented by love (smara), revealed her own (ātman) form, which was even more charming.

But the son of the Brahmin, having seen that beautiful woman (varūthinī), approached her respectfully and spoke these words.
का त्वं कमलगर्भाभे कस्य किं वानुतिष्ठसि ।

Who are you, O lady with a radiance like the heart of a lotus? To whom do you belong, or what are you doing? I am a brahmin who has come here from the city of Aruṇāspada.
पादलेपोऽत्र मे ध्वस्तो विलीनो हिमवारिणा ।
यस्यानुभावादत्राहमागतो मदिरेक्षणे ॥४५॥

My foot-ointment was destroyed here, melted by the snow-water. It is by its magical power (anubhāva), O lady with intoxicating eyes, that I arrived here.

मौलेयाहं महाभागा नाम्ना ख्याता वरूथिनी ।
विचरामि सदैवात्र रमणीये महाचले ॥४६॥
मौलेयाहं महाभागा नाम्ना ख्याता वरूथिनी ।

Varūthinī said: 'I am Mauleyā, the fortunate one, known by the name Varūthinī. I always wander here on this delightful, great mountain.'
साहं त्वद्दर्शनाद्विप्र कामवक्तव्यताङ्गता ।
प्रशाधि यन्मया कार्यं त्वदधीनास्मि साम्प्रतम् ॥४७॥

O brahmin, upon seeing you, I have become overcome with desire (kāma). Command what I should do; I am now entirely devoted to you.

तन्ममाचक्ष्व कल्याणि हानिर्नोऽखिलकर्मणाम् ॥४८॥

The Brahmin said: "O pure-smiling one, O auspicious lady, please tell me the way by which I can return to my own home, for otherwise, there will be a disruption of all my sacred duties (karma)."
नित्यनैमित्तिकानान्तु महाहानिर्द्विजन्मनः ।
भवत्यतस्त्वं हे भद्रे मामुद्धर हिमालयात् ॥४९॥

But for a Brahmin (dvijanman), there is a great loss of both daily and occasional sacred duties. Therefore, O auspicious lady, please rescue me from the Himalayas.
प्रशस्यते न प्रवासो ब्राह्मणानां कदाचम ।
अपराद्धं न मे भीरु देशदर्शनकौतुकम् ॥५०॥

Remaining away from home (pravāsa) is never commended for Brahmins. O timid one, this eagerness of mine to see new lands is not an offense on my part.

नित्यनैमित्तिकानाञ्च हानिरेवं प्रवासिनः ॥५१॥

In the home of a virtuous and foremost Brahmin, all sacred duties (karma) are fulfilled. Similarly, for one dwelling abroad (pravāsin), there is a loss of both daily and occasional duties.
सा त्वं किं बहुनोक्तेन तथा कुरु यशस्विनि ।
यथा नास्तं गेत सूर्ये पश्यामि निजमालयम् ॥५२॥

Here, O greatly fortunate one, for one residing, there is a bed desired by the mind and fragrant ointments. What more could you possibly have in your own home?

त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं मूढे इव्ये प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥६२॥

The Brahmin said: "O twice-born one (dvija), among the eight qualities of the self (ātman), compassion is indeed the foremost. How is it, O protector of true natural law (dharma), that you do not show that compassion towards me?"

नैतद्वदाम्यहं मिथ्या प्रसीद कुलनन्दन ॥६७॥

The Brahmin said: "If you are truly affectionate and not just speaking to me out of mere courtesy, then tell me the means by which I can return to my own abode."

Varuthini said, "You will surely return to your own dwelling from here. For just a short time, enjoy these extremely rare pleasures with me."

The Brahmin said, "O Varuthini, enjoyment is certainly not prescribed for Brahmins. In this life, such endeavors for Brahmins only lead to trouble, and after death, they prove fruitless."

Varuthini said, "By protecting me, who am dying, you will certainly receive the fruit of merit (puṇya) in the next world. As for enjoyments, they will come to you in another birth."

भवन्ति शस्यादखिलं जगद्भवति नान्यतः ॥७६॥

By your nourishment, the gods become the causes of rain, crops, and so forth. From these crops, the entire world exists, and not from any other source.

Just as this entire world indeed comes into being from you by this truth (satya), so may I today see my own home while the sun is still shining.
यथा वै वैदिकं कर्म स्वकाले नोज्झितं मया ।
तेन सत्येन पश्येयं गृहस्थोऽद्य दिवाकरम् ॥७८॥

78. yathā vai vaidikaṃ karma svakāle nojjhitaṃ mayā .
tena satyena paśyeyaṃ gṛhastho'dya divākaram.

Just as indeed a Vedic ritual (karma) was never abandoned by me at its proper time, by that truth (satya) may I, as a householder, today see the sun.
यथा च न परद्रव्ये परदारे च मे मतिः ।
कदाचित् साभिलाषाभूत्तथैतत् सिद्धिमेतु मे ॥७९॥
कदाचित् साभिलाषाभूत्तथैतत् सिद्धिमेतु मे ॥७९॥

kadācit sābhilāṣābhūttathaitat siddhimetu me.

And just as my mind (mati) was never desirous of another's property or another's wife, so may this come to fruition for me.
