मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति संग्रामसज्जास्ते भूपा भूपसुतस्तथा ।
निराकृताः सुबहुशस्तत्कालं चाप्यविक्षिता ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti saṃgrāmasajjāste bhūpā bhūpasutastathā .
nirākṛtāḥ subahuśastatkālaṃ cāpyavikṣitā.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti saṅgrāmasajjāḥ te bhūpāḥ bhūpasutaḥ
tathā nirākṛtāḥ subahuśaḥ tatkālam ca api avikṣitāḥ
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Thus, those kings and the king's son, having prepared for battle, were repeatedly repelled and yet also remained unharmed at that very moment.
ततो बभूव संग्रामस्तस्य तैः सह दारुणः ।
एकस्य बहुभिर्भूपैर्भूपपुत्रवरैर्मुने ॥२॥
2. tato babhūva saṃgrāmastasya taiḥ saha dāruṇaḥ .
ekasya bahubhirbhūpairbhūpaputravarairmune.
2. tataḥ babhūva saṃgrāmaḥ tasya taiḥ saha dāruṇaḥ
ekasya bahubhiḥ bhūpaiḥ bhūpaputravaraiḥ mune
2. O sage, then a terrible battle ensued between him (one person) and many kings, along with their excellent sons.
तेऽसिशक्तिगदाबाणपाणयस्तं सुदुर्मदाः ।
अभिघ्नन्तो युयुधिरे तैः समस्तैरसावपि ॥३॥
3. te'siśaktigadābāṇapāṇayastaṃ sudurmadāḥ .
abhighnanto yuyudhire taiḥ samastairasāvapi.
3. te asiśaktigadābāṇapāṇayaḥ tam sudurmadāḥ
abhighnantaḥ yuyudhire taiḥ samastaiḥ asau api
3. Those exceedingly arrogant opponents, holding swords, spears, maces, and arrows in their hands, attacked and fought him. And he too fought against all of them.
स ताञ्छरशतैरुग्रैर्बिभेद नृपनन्दनः ।
कृतास्त्रो बलवान्बाणैस्ते च तं बिभिदुः शितैः ॥४॥
4. sa tāñcharaśatairugrairbibheda nṛpanandanaḥ .
kṛtāstro balavānbāṇaiste ca taṃ bibhiduḥ śitaiḥ.
4. sa tān śaraśataiḥ ugraiḥ bibheda nṛpanandanaḥ
kṛtāstraḥ balavān bāṇaiḥ te ca tam bibhiduḥ śitaiḥ
4. The prince, skilled in weaponry and powerful, pierced them with hundreds of fierce arrows. And they, in turn, pierced him with sharp arrows.
कस्यचिच्चिच्छिदे बाहुमन्यस्य च शिरोधराम् ।
हृदि विव्याध चैवान्यमन्यं वक्षस्यताडयत् ॥५॥
5. kasyaciccicchide bāhumanyasya ca śirodharām .
hṛdi vivyādha caivānyamanyaṃ vakṣasyatāḍayat.
5. kasyacit cicchide bāhum anyasya ca śirodharām
hṛdi vivyādha ca eva anyam anyam vakṣasi atāḍayat
5. He severed the arm of one, and the neck of another. He pierced one more in the heart, and struck still another on the chest.
करं चिच्छेद करिणस्तुरगस्य तथा शिरः ।
रथस्येषां तथैवाश्वान्रथस्यान्यस्य सारथिम् ॥६॥
6. karaṃ ciccheda kariṇasturagasya tathā śiraḥ .
rathasyeṣāṃ tathaivāśvānrathasyānyasya sārathim.
6. karam ciccheda kariṇaḥ turagasya tathā śiraḥ rathasya
iṣām tathā eva aśvān rathasya anyasya sārathim
6. He cut off the trunk of an elephant, and similarly the head of a horse. And he cut off the pole of one chariot, and likewise the horses and the charioteer of another chariot.
बाणानापततश्चक्रे द्विधा बाणैस्तथा द्विषाम् ।
चिच्छेदान्यस्य खड्गं च धनुरन्यस्य लाघवात् ॥७॥
7. bāṇānāpatataścakre dvidhā bāṇaistathā dviṣām .
cicchedānyasya khaḍgaṃ ca dhanuranyasya lāghavāt.
7. bāṇān āpatataḥ cakre dvidhā bāṇaiḥ tathā dviṣām
ciccheda anyasya khaḍgam ca dhanuḥ anyasya lāghavāt
7. He split the incoming arrows into two with (his own) arrows, and similarly (he split those) of his enemies. With agility, he also cut off the sword of one (opponent) and the bow of another.
तनुत्रेऽपहृते तेन ननाशान्यो नृपात्मजः ।
अविक्षिताहतश्चान्यः पदातिः प्रजहौ रणम् ॥८॥
8. tanutre'pahṛte tena nanāśānyo nṛpātmajaḥ .
avikṣitāhataścānyaḥ padātiḥ prajahau raṇam.
8. tanutre apahṛte tena nanāśa anyaḥ nṛpātmajaḥ
avikṣita āhataḥ ca anyaḥ padātiḥ prajahau raṇam
8. When his armor was removed by him (the hero), another prince (nṛpātmaja) perished. And another foot-soldier, struck by Avikṣita, abandoned the battle.
इत्याकुलीकृते तस्मिन्समग्रे राजमण्डले ।
तस्थुः सप्तशतं वीरा मरणे कृतनिश्चयाः ॥९॥
9. ityākulīkṛte tasminsamagre rājamaṇḍale .
tasthuḥ saptaśataṃ vīrā maraṇe kṛtaniścayāḥ.
9. iti ākulīkṛte tasmin samagre rājamaṇḍale
tasthuḥ saptasatam vīrāḥ maraṇe kṛtaniścayāḥ
9. Thus, when that entire assembly of kings was agitated, seven hundred warriors, resolved on death, stood firm.
आभिजात्यवयःशौर्यलज्जाभारसमन्विताः ।
निर्जिते सकले सैन्ये पलायनपरायणे ॥१०॥
10. ābhijātyavayaḥśauryalajjābhārasamanvitāḥ .
nirjite sakale sainye palāyanaparāyaṇe.

10. Though they were endowed with noble birth, youth, valor, and a weighty sense of shame, when the entire army had been defeated and was intent on fleeing...
तैः समेत्य महीपालैः स तु पुत्रो महीभृतः ।
युयुधे धर्मयुद्धेन तेन तं नातिकोपितः ॥११॥
11. taiḥ sametya mahīpālaiḥ sa tu putro mahībhṛtaḥ .
yuyudhe dharmayuddhena tena taṃ nātikopitaḥ.
11. taiḥ sametya mahīpālaiḥ saḥ tu putraḥ mahībhṛtaḥ
yuyudhe dharmayuddhena tena tam na atikopitaḥ
11. Having united with those kings, that son of the king (mahībhṛt) fought a righteous battle (dharma), and he was not excessively angered by him (the opponent).
विच्छिन्नयन्त्रकवचान्स तानपि महाबलः ।
कर्त्तुं व्यवस्थितस्ते च ततः क्रुद्धा महामुने ॥१२॥
12. vicchinnayantrakavacānsa tānapi mahābalaḥ .
karttuṃ vyavasthitaste ca tataḥ kruddhā mahāmune.
12. vicchinnayantrakavacān saḥ tān api mahābalaḥ
kartum vyavasthitaḥ te ca tataḥ kruddhāḥ mahāmune
12. And he, the mighty one (mahābalaḥ), was prepared to finish off even those (kings) whose armor and equipment had been shattered; but then, O great sage, they became enraged.
धर्ममुत्सृज्य युयुधुर्युध्यमानेन धर्मतः ।
नरेन्द्रपुत्राः प्रस्वेदजलक्लिन्नाननाः समम् ॥१३॥
13. dharmamutsṛjya yuyudhuryudhyamānena dharmataḥ .
narendraputrāḥ prasvedajalaklinnānanāḥ samam.
13. dharmam utsṛjya yuyudhuḥ yudhyamānena dharmataḥ
narendraputrāḥ prasvedajalaklinnānanāḥ samam
13. Abandoning natural law (dharma), the princes, whose faces were wet with sweat, fought against him who was fighting righteously (dharma), all together.
विव्याध कश्चिद्बाणौघैः कश्चिच्चिच्छेद कार्मुकम् ।
ध्वजमस्यापरो बाणैश्छित्त्वा भूमावपातयत् ॥१४॥
14. vivyādha kaścidbāṇaughaiḥ kaścicciccheda kārmukam .
dhvajamasyāparo bāṇaiśchittvā bhūmāvapātayat.
14. vivyādha kaścit bāṇaughaiḥ kaścit ciccheda kārmukam
dhvajam asya aparaḥ bāṇaiḥ chittvā bhūmau apātayat
14. Someone pierced him with volleys of arrows, and someone else severed his bow. Another warrior, having cut down his banner with arrows, made it fall to the ground.
जघ्नुरन्ये तथैवाश्वान्बभञ्जुश्चापरे रथम् ।
गदापातेनाथ चान्ये बाणैः पृष्ठमताडयन् ॥१५॥
15. jaghnuranye tathaivāśvānbabhañjuścāpare ratham .
gadāpātenātha cānye bāṇaiḥ pṛṣṭhamatāḍayan.
15. jaghnuḥ anye tathā eva aśvān babhañjuḥ ca apare ratham
gadāpātena atha ca anye bāṇaiḥ pṛṣṭham atāḍayan
15. Others similarly struck his horses, and still others shattered his chariot. Then, with mace-blows and arrows, yet other warriors struck him on the back.
छिन्ने धनुषि सक्रोधः स तदा नृपतेः सुतः ।
जग्राहासिं तथा चर्म तदप्यन्योन्वपातयत् ॥१६॥
16. chinne dhanuṣi sakrodhaḥ sa tadā nṛpateḥ sutaḥ .
jagrāhāsiṃ tathā carma tadapyanyonvapātayat.
16. chinne dhanuṣi sakrodhaḥ sa tadā nṛpateḥ sutaḥ
jagrāha asim tathā carma tat api anyaḥ anu apātayat
16. When his bow was severed, that enraged son of the king then seized a sword and a shield. However, another warrior struck down even those (weapons).
च्छिन्नासिचर्मा जग्राह स गदां गदिनां वरः ।
तामप्यन्यः क्षुरप्रेण चिच्छेद कृतहस्तवत् ॥१७॥
17. cchinnāsicarmā jagrāha sa gadāṃ gadināṃ varaḥ .
tāmapyanyaḥ kṣurapreṇa ciccheda kṛtahastavat.
17. chinnāsicarmā jagrāha sa gadām gadinām varaḥ
tām api anyaḥ kṣurapreṇa ciccheda kṛtahastavat
17. With his sword and shield severed, that warrior, who was the best among mace-wielders, then seized a mace. However, another warrior, like an expert archer, severed even that mace with a razor-sharp arrow.
अन्ये शरसहस्रेण शतेनान्ये नराधिपाः ।
विव्यधुः कोष्ठकीकृत्य धर्मयुद्धपराङ्मुखाः ॥१८॥
18. anye śarasahasreṇa śatenānye narādhipāḥ .
vivyadhuḥ koṣṭhakīkṛtya dharmayuddhaparāṅmukhāḥ.
18. anye śara-sahasreṇa śatena anye narādhipāḥ
vivyathuḥ koṣṭhakīkṛtya dharma-yuddha-parāṅmukhāḥ
18. Other kings, deviating from the principles of righteous warfare (dharma-yuddha), pierced him with thousands of arrows, while still others used hundreds, making him a confined target.
स विह्वलः पपातोर्व्यामेको बहुभिरर्दितः ।
राजपुत्रा महाभागा बबन्धुस्ते च तं ततः ॥१९॥
19. sa vihvalaḥ papātorvyāmeko bahubhirarditaḥ .
rājaputrā mahābhāgā babandhuste ca taṃ tataḥ.
19. saḥ vihvalaḥ papāta urvyām ekaḥ bahubhiḥ arditaḥ
rājaputrāḥ mahābhāgāḥ babandhuḥ te ca tam tataḥ
19. Overcome and attacked by many, he fell alone to the earth. Thereafter, those esteemed princes bound him.
तमधर्मेण ते सर्वे गृहीत्वा नृपतेः सुतम् ।
विशालेन समं राज्ञा वैदिशं विविशुः परम् ॥२०॥
20. tamadharmeṇa te sarve gṛhītvā nṛpateḥ sutam .
viśālena samaṃ rājñā vaidiśaṃ viviśuḥ param.
20. tam adharmeṇa te sarve gṛhītvā nṛpateḥ sutam
viśālena samam rājñā vaidiśam viviśuḥ param
20. All of them, having unrighteously (adharmeṇa) seized that son of the king, then entered Vediśa along with King Viśāla.
हृष्टाः प्रमुदिता बद्धं समादाय नृपात्मजम् ।
स्वयंवरा च सा कन्या न्यस्ता तेन ततः पुरः ॥२१॥
21. hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditā baddhaṃ samādāya nṛpātmajam .
svayaṃvarā ca sā kanyā nyastā tena tataḥ puraḥ.
21. hṛṣṭāḥ pramuditāḥ baddham samādāya nṛpa-ātmajam
svayaṃvarā ca sā kanyā nyastā tena tataḥ puraḥ
21. Delighted and greatly rejoiced, they brought the captive son of the king. And then, that maiden (kanyā), who was to choose her own husband (svayaṃvarā), was placed before him by the King (Viśāla).
पुनः पुनश्च पित्रोक्ता तथापि च पुरोधसा ।
आलम्ब्यतामिति वरो यस्ते राजसु रोचते ॥२२॥
22. punaḥ punaśca pitroktā tathāpi ca purodhasā .
ālambyatāmiti varo yaste rājasu rocate.
22. punaḥ punaḥ ca pitroktā tathā api ca purodhasā
| ālambyatām iti varaḥ yaḥ te rājasu rocate
22. Even though she was repeatedly told by her father and also by the family priest: "Let this boon be accepted, which pleases you among the kings."
यदा सा मानिनी कञ्चिन्न जग्राह वरं मुने ।
तदा पप्रच्छ दैवज्ञं विवाहार्थं नरेश्वरः ॥२३॥
23. yadā sā māninī kañcinna jagrāha varaṃ mune .
tadā papraccha daivajñaṃ vivāhārthaṃ nareśvaraḥ.
23. yadā sā māninī kañcit na jagrāha varam mune |
tadā papraccha daivajñam vivāhārtham nareśvaraḥ
23. When that proud lady, O sage, did not accept any boon, then the king (nareśvara) asked the astrologer regarding the marriage.
विशिष्टतरमेतस्या विवाहाय दिनं वद ।
अद्यैतदीदृक्सञ्जातं युद्धं विघ्नोपपादकम् ॥२४॥
24. viśiṣṭatarametasyā vivāhāya dinaṃ vada .
adyaitadīdṛksañjātaṃ yuddhaṃ vighnopapādakam.
24. viśiṣṭataram etasyāḥ vivāhāya dinam vada | adya
etat īdṛk sañjātam yuddham vighnopapādakam
24. Tell us an even more auspicious day for her marriage. Today, such a war has occurred, causing an impediment.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इति पृष्टो नरेन्द्रेण स दैवज्ञो विमृश्य तत् ।
दुर्मनाः प्राह विज्ञातपरमार्थो महीपतिम् ॥२५॥
25. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
iti pṛṣṭo narendreṇa sa daivajño vimṛśya tat .
durmanāḥ prāha vijñātaparamārtho mahīpatim.

vimṛśya tat | durmanāḥ prāha vijñātapararmārthaḥ mahīpatim
25. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Being thus questioned by the king (narendra), that astrologer, having reflected upon it and realizing the ultimate truth (paramārtha), spoke to the lord of the earth (mahīpati) with a heavy heart.
भविष्यन्त्यपराणीह दिनानि पृथिवीपते ।
प्रशस्तलग्नयुक्तानि शोभनान्यचिरेण वै ॥२६॥
26. bhaviṣyantyaparāṇīha dināni pṛthivīpate .
praśastalagnayuktāni śobhanānyacireṇa vai.
26. bhaviṣyanti aparāṇi iha dināni pṛthivīpate
praśasta-lagna-yuktāni śobhanāni acireṇa vai
26. O lord of the earth (pṛthivīpati), other auspicious and beautiful days, marked by propitious astrological conjunctions, will surely come soon.
करिष्यसि विवाहं त्वं तेषु प्राप्तेषु मानद ।
अलमेतेन यत्रायं महाविघ्न उपस्थितः ॥२७॥
27. kariṣyasi vivāhaṃ tvaṃ teṣu prāpteṣu mānada .
alametena yatrāyaṃ mahāvighna upasthitaḥ.
27. kariṣyasi vivāhaṃ tvaṃ teṣu prāpteṣu mānada
alam etena yatra ayaṃ mahāvighna upasthitaḥ
27. O bestower of honor (mānada), you will perform the marriage when those [auspicious days] arrive. Enough of this [delay], as this great impediment (mahāvighna) is already present.
