महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-27, verse-41

अग्नौ प्राप्तं प्रधूयेत यथा तूलं द्विजोत्तम ।
तथा गङ्गावगाढस्य सर्वं पापं प्रधूयते ॥४१॥
41. agnau prāptaṁ pradhūyeta yathā tūlaṁ dvijottama ,
tathā gaṅgāvagāḍhasya sarvaṁ pāpaṁ pradhūyate.
41. agnau prāptam pradhūyeta yathā tūlam dvijottama
tathā gaṅgāvagaḍhasya sarvam pāpam pradhūyate
41. O best of brahmins, just as cotton, when it reaches fire, is completely consumed, similarly, all the sin of one who has immersed themselves in the Gaṅgā is burnt away.
