यच्छास्त्रं ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्तं नारदाय महात्मने ।
तदेव शौनकादिभ्यो नारदः प्राह सादरम् ॥१॥
1. yacchāstraṃ brahmaṇā proktaṃ nāradāya mahātmane .
tadeva śaunakādibhyo nāradaḥ prāha sādaram.

1. That scripture, which was declared by Brahmā to the great-souled Nārada (mahātman), Nārada himself respectfully narrated to Śaunaka and others.
ततो मया यथा ज्ञातं तुभ्यमुक्तं तथा द्विज ।
नासूयकाय दातव्यं परनिन्दारताय वा ॥२॥
2. tato mayā yathā jñātaṃ tubhyamuktaṃ tathā dvija .
nāsūyakāya dātavyaṃ paranindāratāya vā.
2. tataḥ mayā yathā jñātam tubhyam uktam tathā
dvija na asūyakāya dātavyam paranindāratāya vā
2. Therefore, O twice-born (dvija), I have spoken to you what I have understood, exactly as it was known. This knowledge should not be given to an envious person or to one who is devoted to slandering others.
जडाय दुर्विनीताय नाज्ञाताय कदाचन ।
देयमेतत्सुरिलाय भक्ताय सत्यवादिने ॥३॥
3. jaḍāya durvinītāya nājñātāya kadācana .
deyametatsurilāya bhaktāya satyavādine.

deyam etat sūrilāya bhaktāya satyavādine
3. This (knowledge) should never be given to someone who is dull-witted, ill-behaved, or unknown. It should be imparted to a wise person, a devotee (bhakti), and one who speaks the truth.
मेधाविने विनीताय सम्यग् ज्ञातकुलाय च ।
पुण्यदं ज्यौतिषं शास्त्रमग्र्यं वेदाङ्गमुत्तमम् ॥४॥
4. medhāvine vinītāya samyag jñātakulāya ca .
puṇyadaṃ jyautiṣaṃ śāstramagryaṃ vedāṅgamuttamam.
4. medhāvīne vinītāya samyak jñātakulāya ca puṇyadam
jyautiṣam śāstram agryam vedāṅgam uttamam
4. This astrological science, which bestows merit (puṇyada), is foremost, and an excellent limb of the Veda (vedāṅga), should be imparted to an intelligent and modest person, and to one of a well-known family.
जानाति कालमानं यो ग्रहर्क्षाणां च संस्थितिम् ।
होराशास्त्रमिदं सम्यक् स विजानाति नाऽपरः ॥५॥
5. jānāti kālamānaṃ yo graharkṣāṇāṃ ca saṃsthitim .
horāśāstramidaṃ samyak sa vijānāti nā'paraḥ.
5. jānāti kālamānam yaḥ graharṣāṇām ca saṃsthitim
horāśāstram idam samyak sa vijānāti na aparaḥ
5. Whoever knows the measure of time and the positions of planets and constellations, he truly understands this Hora science; no one else does.
होराशास्त्रार्थतत्त्वज्ञः सत्यवाग् विजितेन्द्रियः ।
शुभाऽशुभं फलं वक्ति सत्यं तद्वचनं भवेत् ॥६॥
6. horāśāstrārthatattvajñaḥ satyavāg vijitendriyaḥ .
śubhā'śubhaṃ phalaṃ vakti satyaṃ tadvacanaṃ bhavet.
6. horāśāstrārthatattvajñaḥ satyavāk vijitendriyaḥ
śubha aśubham phalaṃ vakti satyaṃ tat vacanaṃ bhavet
6. A person who truly understands the essence of astrological treatises (horāśāstra), speaks truthfully, and has controlled their senses, their pronouncements regarding auspicious and inauspicious outcomes will indeed come true.
ये सुशास्त्रं पठन्तीदं ये वा श‍ृण्वन्ति भक्तितः ।
तेषांमायुर्बलं वित्तं वृद्धिमेति यशः सदा ॥७॥
7. ye suśāstraṃ paṭhantīdaṃ ye vā śa‍ृṇvanti bhaktitaḥ .
teṣāṃmāyurbalaṃ vittaṃ vṛddhimeti yaśaḥ sadā.
7. ye suśāstraṃ paṭhanti idaṃ ye vā śṛṇvanti bhaktitaḥ
teṣām āyuḥ balaṃ vittaṃ vṛddhiṃ eti yaśaḥ sadā
7. For those who read this excellent treatise, or those who listen to it with devotion (bhakti), their longevity, strength, wealth, and fame will always increase.
इत्थं पराशरेणोक्तं होराशास्त्रं चमत्कृतम् ।
नवं नवजनप्रीत्यै विविधाध्यायसंयुतम् ॥८॥
8. itthaṃ parāśareṇoktaṃ horāśāstraṃ camatkṛtam .
navaṃ navajanaprītyai vividhādhyāyasaṃyutam.
8. itthaṃ parāśareṇa uktaṃ horāśāstraṃ camatkṛtaṃ
navaṃ navajanaprītyai vividhādhyāyasaṃyutam
8. In this manner, this wonderful astrological treatise (horāśāstra) has been declared by Parāśara, a new and remarkable work, enriched with various chapters, for the delight of future generations.
श्रेष्ठं जगद्धितायेदं मैत्रेयाय द्विजन्मने ।
ततः प्रचरितं पृथ्व्यामादृतं सादरं जनैः ॥९॥
9. śreṣṭhaṃ jagaddhitāyedaṃ maitreyāya dvijanmane .
tataḥ pracaritaṃ pṛthvyāmādṛtaṃ sādaraṃ janaiḥ.
9. śreṣṭham jagat hitāya idam maitreyāya dvijanmane
| tataḥ pracaritam pṛthvyām ādṛtam sādaram janaiḥ
9. This supreme treatise, for the benefit of the world, was imparted to Maitreya, the twice-born (dvijanman). Thereafter, it spread across the Earth and was respectfully received by people.
ग्रन्थेऽस्मिन् पृथगध्यायैर्विषया विनिवेशिताः ।
सृष्टिक्रमोऽवताराश्च गुणाः खेटस्य भस्य च ॥१०॥
10. granthe'smin pṛthagadhyāyairviṣayā viniveśitāḥ .
sṛṣṭikramo'vatārāśca guṇāḥ kheṭasya bhasya ca.
10. granthe asmin pṛthak adhyāyaiḥ viṣayāḥ viniveśitāḥ
| sṛṣṭikramaḥ avatārāḥ ca guṇāḥ kheṭasya bhasya ca
10. In this treatise, various topics are systematically introduced through separate chapters. These include the process of creation (sṛṣṭikrama), divine incarnations (avatāra), and the characteristics of both planets and constellations.
विशेषलग्नं वर्गाश्च तद्विवेकश्च राशिदृक् ।
अरिष्टं तद्विभङ्गश्च विवेको भावजस्तथा ॥११॥
11. viśeṣalagnaṃ vargāśca tadvivekaśca rāśidṛk .
ariṣṭaṃ tadvibhaṅgaśca viveko bhāvajastathā.
11. viśeṣalagnam vargāḥ ca tat vivekaḥ ca rāśidṛk |
ariṣṭam tat vibhaṅgaḥ ca vivekaḥ bhāvojaḥ tathā
11. Other topics include special ascendants (lagna), divisional charts (varga) and their analysis, sign aspects (rāśidṛk), indications of misfortune (ariṣṭa) and their cancellation, as well as the analysis of houses (bhāva).
भावानां च फलाध्यायो भावेशोत्थफलं तथा ।
अप्रकाशफलं स्पष्टखेटदृष्टिप्रसाधनम् ॥१२॥
12. bhāvānāṃ ca phalādhyāyo bhāveśotthaphalaṃ tathā .
aprakāśaphalaṃ spaṣṭakheṭadṛṣṭiprasādhanam.
12. bhāvānām ca phalādhyāyaḥ bhāveśotthaphalam
tathā aprakāśaphalam spaṣṭakheṭadṛṣṭiprasādhanam
12. The chapter on the results of astrological houses (bhāva), and similarly, the results originating from the lords of those houses, along with obscure results, and the elucidation of clear planetary aspects (are discussed).
ततः स्पष्टबलाध्यायः इष्टकष्टप्रसाधनम् ।
पदं चोपपदं तद्वदर्गला त्वथ कारकाः ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ spaṣṭabalādhyāyaḥ iṣṭakaṣṭaprasādhanam .
padaṃ copapadaṃ tadvadargalā tvatha kārakāḥ.
13. tataḥ spaṣṭabalādhyāyaḥ iṣṭakaṣṭaprasādhanam
padam ca upapadam tadvat argalā tu atha kārakāḥ
13. Thereafter, the chapter on planetary strength (bala), the elucidation of auspicious and inauspicious results, followed by the "pada" and "upapada" (astrological points), and similarly, the "argalā" (planetary intervention), and then the significators (kāraka) (are explained).
कारकांशफलं योगकारकाध्याय एव च ।
नाभसा विविधा योगाश्चन्द्रयोगोऽर्कयोगकः ॥१४॥
14. kārakāṃśaphalaṃ yogakārakādhyāya eva ca .
nābhasā vividhā yogāścandrayogo'rkayogakaḥ.
14. kārakāṃśaphalam yogakārakādhyāyaḥ eva ca
nābhasāḥ vividhāḥ yogāḥ candrayogaḥ arkayogakaḥ
14. The results derived from the significator (kāraka) divisional charts, and indeed the chapter on "yogakārakas" (planets forming auspicious combinations); furthermore, various celestial combinations (nābhasa yoga), Moon's combinations, and Sun's combinations (are described).
राजयोगस्ततः प्रोक्तो राजसम्बन्धयोगकः ।
विशेषधनयोगाश्च योगा दारिद्र्यकारकाः ॥१५॥
15. rājayogastataḥ prokto rājasambandhayogakaḥ .
viśeṣadhanayogāśca yogā dāridryakārakāḥ.
15. rājayogaḥ tataḥ proktaḥ rājasambandhayogakaḥ
viśeṣadhanayogāḥ ca yogāḥ dāridryakārakāḥ
15. Subsequently, royal combinations (rājayoga) are described, as well as combinations related to royalty, special wealth-giving combinations, and combinations that cause poverty.
आयुर्मारकभेदाश्च ग्रहावस्थाः फलान्विताः ।
नानाविधदशाध्यायास्तत्फलाध्यायः संयुताः ॥१६॥
16. āyurmārakabhedāśca grahāvasthāḥ phalānvitāḥ .
nānāvidhadaśādhyāyāstatphalādhyāyaḥ saṃyutāḥ.
16. āyurmārakabhedāḥ ca grahāvasthāḥ phalānvitāḥ
nānāvidhadaśādhyāyāḥ tatphalādhyāyaḥ saṃyutāḥ
16. It also details the distinctions related to longevity (āyus) and death-inflicting planets (māraka), the states of planets along with their effects, and chapters on various types of planetary periods (daśā) including those on their specific results.
अन्तःप्रत्यन्तरप्राणसूक्ष्मसंज्ञाश्च तद्भिदाः ।
सूर्याद्यष्टकवर्गश्च त्रिकोणपरिशोधनम् ॥१७॥
17. antaḥpratyantaraprāṇasūkṣmasaṃjñāśca tadbhidāḥ .
sūryādyaṣṭakavargaśca trikoṇapariśodhanam.
17. antaḥpratyantaraprāṇasūkṣmasaṃjñāḥ ca tadbhidāḥ
sūryādyaṣṭakavargaḥ ca trikoṇapariśodhanam
17. This includes the nomenclature and divisions of Antara-daśā, Pratyantara-daśā, Prāṇa-daśā, and Sūkṣma-daśā. Also detailed are the Aṣṭakavarga system, starting with the Sun and other planets, and the purification of triplicity signs (trikoṇa-pariśodhana).
एकाधिपत्यसंशुद्धिस्ततः पिण्डप्रसाधनम् ।
ततश्चाऽष्टकवर्गाणां प्रस्फुटानि फलानि च ॥१८॥
18. ekādhipatyasaṃśuddhistataḥ piṇḍaprasādhanam .
tataścā'ṣṭakavargāṇāṃ prasphuṭāni phalāni ca.
18. ekādhipatyasaṃśuddhiḥ tataḥ piṇḍaprasādhanam
tataḥ ca aṣṭakavargāṇām prasphuṭāni phalāni ca
18. First, the purification of single rulership. Then, the calculation of aggregate strengths. And thereafter, the distinct results of the aṣṭakavarga system are described.
ततोऽप्यष्टकवर्गायुःसाधनं च ततः परम् ।
समुदायाष्टवर्गोत्थफलाध्यायः परिस्फुटः ॥१९॥
19. tato'pyaṣṭakavargāyuḥsādhanaṃ ca tataḥ param .
samudāyāṣṭavargotthaphalādhyāyaḥ parisphuṭaḥ.
19. tataḥ api aṣṭakavargāyuḥsādhanam ca tataḥ param
samudāyāṣṭavargotthaphalādhyāyaḥ parisphuṭaḥ
19. Then, also, the calculation of longevity based on the aṣṭakavarga system. And after that, there is an explicit chapter on the results derived from the aggregate aṣṭakavarga.
ग्रहरश्मिफलाध्यायः सुदर्शनफलं तथा ।
महापुरुषचिह्नानि महाभूतफलानि च ॥२०॥
20. graharaśmiphalādhyāyaḥ sudarśanaphalaṃ tathā .
mahāpuruṣacihnāni mahābhūtaphalāni ca.
20. graharaśmiphalaadhyāyaḥ sudarśanaphalam
tathā mahāpuruṣacihnāni mahābhūtaphālāni ca
20. The chapter on the results of planetary rays and the results of the Sudarśana system. Similarly, it covers the auspicious marks of a great person (mahāpuruṣa) and the outcomes related to the great elements (mahābhūta).
गुणत्रयफलाध्यायस्ततोऽप्यज्ञातजन्मनाम् ।
जन्मलग्नादिविज्ञानं प्रव्रज्यालक्षणानि च ॥२१॥
21. guṇatrayaphalādhyāyastato'pyajñātajanmanām .
janmalagnādivijñānaṃ pravrajyālakṣaṇāni ca.
21. guṇatrayaphalādhyāyaḥ tataḥ api ajñātajanmanām
janmalagnādivijñānam pravrajyālakṣaṇāni ca
21. This chapter covers the effects of the three natural qualities (guṇa). Afterwards, it also includes knowledge of the birth ascendant (lagna) and similar details for those whose birth is unknown, along with the characteristics of renunciation (pravrajyā).
स्त्रीणां च फलवैष्ट्यमङ्गलक्ष्मफलानि च ।
पूर्वपापोत्थशापोत्थयोगा वैपुत्र्यकारकाः ॥२२॥
22. strīṇāṃ ca phalavaiṣṭyamaṅgalakṣmaphalāni ca .
pūrvapāpotthaśāpotthayogā vaiputryakārakāḥ.
22. strīṇām ca phala-vaiṣṭyam aṅga-lakṣma-phalāni
ca pūrvapāpotthaśāpotthayogāḥ vaiputryakārakāḥ
22. Also included are the specific results for women, the outcomes of misfortunes, and the effects of bodily marks. Furthermore, astrological combinations (yoga) that cause childlessness, arising from past sins and curses, are described.
सत्पुत्रप्राप्त्युपायाश्च सहैव प्रतिपादिताः ।
जन्मन्यनिष्टलग्नर्क्षतिथ्यादिप्रतिपादनम् ॥२३॥
23. satputraprāptyupāyāśca sahaiva pratipāditāḥ .
janmanyaniṣṭalagnarkṣatithyādipratipādanam.
23. satputraprāptyupāyāḥ ca saha eva pratipāditāḥ
janmani aniṣṭa-lagnarkṣatithyādi-pratipādanam
23. Moreover, methods for obtaining virtuous sons are described together with these. Also, there is an exposition regarding inauspicious ascendants (lagna), constellations (nakṣatra), lunar days (tithi), and similar factors at the time of birth.
तत्तच्छान्तिविधिश्चैव संक्षेपेण प्रदर्शितः ।
प्रसवस्य विकाराश्च कथिताः शान्तिसंयुताः ॥२४॥
24. tattacchāntividhiścaiva saṃkṣepeṇa pradarśitaḥ .
prasavasya vikārāśca kathitāḥ śāntisaṃyutāḥ.
24. tat tat śāntividhiḥ ca eva saṃkṣepeṇa pradarśitaḥ
prasavasya vikārāḥ ca kathitāḥ śānti-saṃyutāḥ
24. Furthermore, methods for specific remedies have been briefly presented. Additionally, various birth-related disorders have been described, along with their corresponding propitiatory rites (śānti).
एवं जातकवर्येऽत्र निविष्टा विषयाः शतम् ।
विज्ञाय विबुधास्त्वेतान् प्राप्नुवन्तु यशः श्रियम् ॥२५॥
25. evaṃ jātakavarye'tra niviṣṭā viṣayāḥ śatam .
vijñāya vibudhāstvetān prāpnuvantu yaśaḥ śriyam.
25. evam jātaka-varye atra niviṣṭāḥ viṣayāḥ śatam
vijñāya vibudhāḥ tu etān prāpnuvantu yaśaḥ śriyam
25. Thus, in this principal section concerning nativities, a hundred subjects have been presented. May the wise, by comprehending these, achieve fame and prosperity.
